Quality Changes In Hermetically Stored Corn Caused By Fungi And Sitophilus Zeamais, Nda-Agyima Addae-Mensah K

Open Access Theses

Hermetic storage has been shown to be effective in controlling insect pests and maintaining grain quality of dry grains at 13% moisture and below. However, the feasibility and use of hermetic storage for grains at intermediate mid-moisture levels under the influence of the sub-Saharan African weather conditions is relatively unknown. Hermetic storage experiments were conducted on grade 1 "6297 and 6333 VT RIB" hybrid corn under controlled temperature conditions at 10 degrees centigrade and 25 degrees centigrade at target approximate moisture content levels of 11, 15, 18 and 21% wet basis for a total storage period of 6 months. Corn …

Consumer Perceptions Of Child-Friendly Shaped Healthy Fruit And Vegetable Snacks, Selena Lauren Baker Apr 2014

Consumer Perceptions Of Child-Friendly Shaped Healthy Fruit And Vegetable Snacks, Selena Lauren Baker

Open Access Theses

Fruits and vegetables (FV) are widely recognized as healthful foods by the public, and most individuals are aware of dietary guidance recommendations to consume more FV. However, actual consumption of FV has been and continues to be low in the United States and many other countries, despite public health efforts to change this trend. The sub-optimal intake of FV among children and adolescents is of particular concern due to high nutrient requirements for proper growth and development during these life stages. Fruit and vegetable intake patterns in childhood have been shown to track into later life and may affect individuals' …

An Economic Analysis Of Sizing Constraints: Price Discrimination And Changes In Welfare Under The New York City Soda Ban, Brian A. Bourquard Apr 2014

An Economic Analysis Of Sizing Constraints: Price Discrimination And Changes In Welfare Under The New York City Soda Ban, Brian A. Bourquard

Open Access Theses

This thesis uses profit maximizing techniques and nonlinear, second-degree price discrimination theory to describe changes in consumption and gains and losses in welfare of consumption under a container size constraint. It observationally examines the New York City soda ban to provide insight into retailer behavior in the event of such a ban, and examines three cases to highlight potential retailer decisions to compensate for a ban: to continue using a restricted menu of pricing options; to sell only to high type soda consumers; or to serve both markets with a one-size-fits-all strategy. This thesis finds that the ban generally reduces …

Characteristics Of Fibrous Tissue At High Rates Of Tensile Loading, Benjamin J. Claus Apr 2014

Characteristics Of Fibrous Tissue At High Rates Of Tensile Loading, Benjamin J. Claus

Open Access Theses

The mechanical behavior of fibrous tissue is generally characterized at very low strain rates. However, many injuries occur at high rates of loading, such as those encountered in sporting events or vehicle accidents. An understanding of injury behavior requires the injury process to be recorded at high strain rates. Even at low rates of loading, the injury/failure within tissues occurs quickly. Furthermore, using conventional imaging systems, the surface of a specimen may be well documented throughout an experiment. However, damage formation does not necessarily begin at the surface of the specimen or even on the surface exposed to a camera. …

Comparative Analysis Of The True Profitability Between Genetic Multiplication And Terminal Pig Production, Nicholas H. Dekryger

Open Access Theses

In the agriculture industry today, farmers and agribusinesses must continually deal numerous uncertainties and consequential financials burdens. Market prices, both in grains and livestock, have varied quiet substantially over the past five years creating difficulties in risk management and sales. As a means to combat the uncertainty facing the agriculture industry, solid business strategies must be implemented in order to absorb any external impact. Using part of the strategy outlined in The Breakthrough Imperative, an analysis was done on the strategy used by Belstra Group Farms with the goal to determine the true profitability of gilt multiplication.

A model was …

Biomechanics And Relaxivity For Functional Imaging Of Articular Cartilage Injury And Degradation, Kateri Elizabeth Fites Apr 2014

Biomechanics And Relaxivity For Functional Imaging Of Articular Cartilage Injury And Degradation, Kateri Elizabeth Fites

Open Access Theses

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major debilitating health concern and economic burden worldwide, affecting 27 million people in the United States alone. OA often follows tissue injury, and is marked by changes in the structure and biomechanical function of cartilage, including breakdown of extracellular matrix molecules, loss of bulk tissue stiffness, and increase in articular surface friction and wear. Unlike bone and many other tissues, cartilage lacks an intrinsic capacity for regeneration. Advanced OA is typically diagnosed by patient symptoms (e.g. joint pain) and confirmed by radiographic evaluation of joint space narrowing. However, the application of functional imaging to assess cartilage …

Effects Of Incremental Amounts Of Fish Oil On Trans Fatty Acids And Butyrivibrio Bacteria In Continuous Culture Fermenters., A A Abughazaleh, A Ishlak

Peer-reviewed Articles

Previous studies have shown that adding fish oil (FO) to ruminant animal diets increased vaccenic acid (VA; t11 C18:1) accumulation in the rumen. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary FO amounts on selected strains of rumen bacteria involved in biohydrogenation. A single-flow continuous culture system consisting of four fermenters was used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 9 days consecutive periods. Treatment diets were as follows: (i) control diet (53:47 forage to concentrate; CON), (ii) control plus FO at 0.5% (DM basis; FOL), (iii) control plus FO at 2% …

Induced Transcriptional Profiling Of Phenylpropanoid Pathway Genes Increased Flavonoid And Lignin Content In Arabidopsis Leaves In Response To Microbial Products, Mohammad Babar Ali, David H. Mcnear Apr 2014

Induced Transcriptional Profiling Of Phenylpropanoid Pathway Genes Increased Flavonoid And Lignin Content In Arabidopsis Leaves In Response To Microbial Products, Mohammad Babar Ali, David H. Mcnear

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The production and use of biologically derived soil additives is one of the fastest growing sectors of the fertilizer industry. These products have been shown to improve crop yields while at the same time reducing fertilizer inputs to and nutrient loss from cropland. The mechanisms driving the changes in primary productivity and soil processes are poorly understood and little is known about changes in secondary productivity associated with the use of microbial products. Here we investigate secondary metabolic responses to a biologically derived soil additive by monitoring changes in the phenlypropanoid (PP) pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana.

RESULTS: This study …

Missouri Court Limits The Reach Of The Pollution Exclusion, Kelly Gorman

Missouri Law Review

This Note explains the conflicting viewpoints presented in Wyatt and how the court reached its conclusion that the pollution exclusion clause does not encompass non-traditional pollutants. Part II of this Note describes the facts of Wyatt and the particular position of each party. In Part III, this Note examines the history behind pollution exclusion language and the various forces that shaped its evolution. Part IV then considers how other jurisdictions have dealt with pollution exclusion clauses and what legal theories or principles shaped their decisions. Finally, Part V argues that the Court of Appeals’ rejection of a more broad “pollution …

The Dayton Food System: Current Access To Food In Dayton And Future Possibilities, Katherine A. Liutkus Apr 2014

The Dayton Food System: Current Access To Food In Dayton And Future Possibilities, Katherine A. Liutkus

Honors Theses

Downtown Dayton and its surrounding areas are considered to be a food desert by the USDA, which means there is limited access to healthy foods within a .5 mile radius. The implications of this include driving further for groceries or turning to convenience stores for highly processed foods. This has created health concerns for the residents of Dayton, including obesity and diabetes. The purpose of this study was to understand the food system issues, their complexity and implications, and to understand what groups are currently doing to support the food system, and what is necessary to push the issues forward …

Note – Rape-Related Pregnancies: The Need To Create Stronger Protections For The Victim-Mother And Child, Margot E. H. Stevens Apr 2014

Note – Rape-Related Pregnancies: The Need To Create Stronger Protections For The Victim-Mother And Child, Margot E. H. Stevens

UC Law Journal

About one in six women in the United States will be a victim of rape. For many of these women, the rape does not end there—this crime against their body will result in an unplanned pregnancy. In recent years, rape awareness has increased both in the government and among the public: a new federal definition of rape encompasses a broader spectrum of victims and pregnancy resulting from rape was splashed across national headlines. But this is not enough. Most states lack sufficient legal protections for a pregnant rape victim: criminal prosecutions and convictions for rape are rare, and many states …

Between The Lines: Somali Women And Medical Interpretation Experiences, Amin Sheikh

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Many studies have investigated the health care experiences of Somali women. However, there is little research that looks at Somali women’s experiences with language barriers and their language preferences. In my capstone, I explore language barriers in the health care system from the perspective of non-English speaking immigrant Somali women with children living in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Community Engagement And Participation In Collective Impact Initiatives, Sarah M. Milnar Apr 2014

Community Engagement And Participation In Collective Impact Initiatives, Sarah M. Milnar

Professional Projects

There is no question that large social problems like poverty and educational inequality are difficult to solve. Many groups throughout the nation and world are adopting the framework of collective impact in efforts to solve these problems together, as opposed to working in individual silos yielding only isolated impact. However, the framework that is used to align high-level leaders and resources has been criticized for being too “top down” and perhaps leaving out the actual people who are directly affected by the interventions. This report examines whether and how collective impact initiatives foster the participation and engagement of the very …

The Role Of Sirtuin 1 And Ceramide In T10C12 Conjugated Linoleic Acid Induced Delipidation In 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Wei Wang Apr 2014

The Role Of Sirtuin 1 And Ceramide In T10C12 Conjugated Linoleic Acid Induced Delipidation In 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Wei Wang

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Project 1: Trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10c12 CLA) reduces triglyceride (TG) levels in adipocytes through multiple pathways, with AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) generally facilitating, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) generally opposing these reductions. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a histone/protein deacetylase that affects energy homeostasis, often functions coordinately with AMPK, and is capable of binding to PPARγ, thereby inhibiting its activity. This study investigated the role of SIRT1 in the response of 3T3-L1 adipocytes to t10c12 CLA by testing the following hypotheses: 1) SIRT1 is functionally required for robust TG reduction; …

Fresher Start Team Project Analysis, Michael Carlson, Andrijka Macko, Katie Richter

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

In the Fall of 2013 a team of students in LIB322: “Wicked Problems of Sustainability” at Grand Valley State University created “Fresh Start,” an afterschool program centered on teaching middle school students healthy eating habits. The values and initiatives demonstrated by “Fresh Start” persuaded us – a team of LIB322 students from the Winter of 2014 – to further their initial efforts. Our team, “Fresh(er) Start,” thus sought to develop and refine an interactive afterschool program for elementary school children within the local community. Working with children while they are young is crucial to their future dietary practices. Biopsychologist Julie …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

The purpose of this project is to address two contributing factors surrounding our current nutritional and environmental problems: a lack of experiential education and a lack of motivation. As a team of Grand Valley State University students, we sought to address this problem by using our diverse backgrounds to create an elective course in a local K-12 setting. The course, entitled “The Sprout Society,” will engage students through the integration of guest speakers, community service efforts, interactive technology, and art-making activities. We will establish a learning experience that encourages young adults to be aware, motivated, and involved in sustainability and …

The Relationship Between Maternal Child Feeding Practices And Child’S Bmi And Child’S Dietary Restraint In Mexican-American Families Of Grand Rapids, Mi., Larissa E. Fluegel Apr 2014

The Relationship Between Maternal Child Feeding Practices And Child’S Bmi And Child’S Dietary Restraint In Mexican-American Families Of Grand Rapids, Mi., Larissa E. Fluegel

Masters Theses

Background. Research in Caucasian girls has shown a relationship between mother’s restrictive feeding practices and girls’ eating in absence of hunger and greater body mass index (BMI). Hispanic children disproportionately suffer from obesity, yet there are limited studies on this relationship.

Purpose. This study sought to examine the relationship between maternal feeding practices (MFP) and child BMI (BMIch); and to explore the effect of demographics and culture on the latter. The hypothesis that BMIch is positively correlated with dietary restriction and monitoring and negatively correlated with pressure to eat was tested.

Subjects. First or second-generation Mexican-American women …

A Strategy For Integrating Essential Three-Dimensional Microphysiological Systems Of Human Organs For Realistic Anticancer Drug Screening, Christopher Heylman, Agua Sobrino, Venktesh S. Shirure, Christopher Cw Hughes, Steven C. George

Biomedical Engineering

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. Despite some success, traditional anticancer drugs developed to reduce tumor growth face important limitations primarily due to undesirable bone marrow and cardiovascular toxicity. Many drugs fail in clinical development after showing promise in preclinical trials, suggesting that the available in vitro and animal models are poor predictors of drug efficacy and toxicity in humans. Thus, novel models that more accurately mimic the biology of human organs are necessary for high-throughput drug screening. Three-dimensional (3D) microphysiological systems can utilize induced pluripotent stem cell technology, tissue engineering, and …
