The Economic Feasibility Of Establishing A Pine Nut Orchard In California, Jason Joseph Colombini Jun 2014

The Economic Feasibility Of Establishing A Pine Nut Orchard In California, Jason Joseph Colombini

Agribusiness

The purpose of this project was to determine where pine nuts could be grown in California and if they would be economically feasible to grow in California.

There is very limited information for growing pine nuts in a domesticated orchard. Areas where there was a lack of information were completed with assumptions using costs for walnuts. Once all costs were determined, they were entered into an Excel spreadsheet for analysis.

It has been concluded that pine nuts could be grown in California, mainly in the far northern intermountain regions such as Modoc County. The breakeven for the enterprise would not …

Metal Release From Serpentine Soils In Sri Lanka, Meththika Vithanage, Anushka Upamali Rajapaksha, Christopher Oze, Nishanta Rajakaruna, C. B. Dissanayake

Biological Sciences

Ultramafic rocks and their related soils (i.e., serpentine soils) are non-anthropogenic sources of metal contamination. Elevated concentrations of metals released from these soils into the surrounding areas and groundwater have ecological-, agricultural-, and human health-related consequences. Here we report the geochemistry of four different serpentine soil localities in Sri Lanka by coupling interpretations garnered from physicochemical properties and chemical extractions. Both Ni and Mn demonstrate appreciable release in water from the Ussangoda soils compared to the other three localities, with Ni and Mn metal release increasing with increasing ionic strengths at all sites. Sequential extraction experiments, utilized to identify “elemental …

An Assessment Of Risk Factors For Early Death Among A Sample Of Previously Incarcerated Youth, Patricia A. Stoddard Dare, Miyuki Fukushima Tedor, Linda M. Quinn, Christopher A. Mallett

Social Work Faculty Publications

Most previous research regarding early death prior to, or during, young adulthood among previously detained delinquent youth has focused predominantly on males or on their cause of death. This study extends previous research by evaluating potential factors that are associated with early death in a random sample (N = 999) of formerly detained youthful offenders in New York stratified by gender (50% female). Existing case records were referenced with the National Death Index to determine if the formerly detained youth were deceased by the time they would have reached age 28. Regression analyses were run to determine if any of …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Lake ecosystems are strongly linked to their terrestrial surroundings by material and energy fluxes across ecosystem boundaries. However, the contribution of terrestrial particulate organic carbon (tPOC) from annual leaf fall to lake food webs has not yet been adequately traced and quantified. In this study, we conducted whole-lake experiments to trace artificially added tPOC through the food webs of two shallow lakes of similar eutrophic status, but featuring alternative stable regimes (macrophyte rich vs. phytoplankton dominated). Lakes were divided with a curtain, and maize (Zea mays) leaves were added, as an isotopically distinct tPOC source, into one half of each …

Trading Responses To Negative Signals, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington Jun 2014

Trading Responses To Negative Signals, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington

HCBE Faculty Articles

Mergers may be undertaken by giving shareholders of the target firm the right to exchange their stock for stock in the combined firm. Such stock mergers release the negative signal that the acquiring firm lacks cash. Informed traders seeking immediate gain may short sell acquirer stock or buy puts and sell calls. Liquidity traders, desiring longterm gain, may purchase stock or call options to benefit from lower stock prices, or sell stock or buy put options to maintain liquidity. This paper constructs a theoretical model in which option volume forms the bounds of the final stock price for informed traders …

The Effect Of Temperature And Extraction Technique On The Binding Interactions And Hydrolysis Of Β-Lactoglobulin With Milk Fat Globule Membrane (Mfgm), Corbin R. Kembel Jun 2014

The Effect Of Temperature And Extraction Technique On The Binding Interactions And Hydrolysis Of Β-Lactoglobulin With Milk Fat Globule Membrane (Mfgm), Corbin R. Kembel

Master's Theses

Whey protein, containing predominately b-Lactoglobulin (b-LG), is a popular choice among consumers looking for an excellent protein source. Likewise, fat is a natural component in milk and dairy products. Lipids are packaged within a membrane called the Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM). The MGFM contains a variety of lipids and proteins. Although b-LG has been extensively characterized, the function of the protein is largely unknown. The objectives of this study were to assess the enzymatics of b-LG in an isolated system, evaluate the propensity of b-LG to bind to MFGM, determine the effects of temperature and fat extraction method on …

Behaviors That Predict Personality Components In Adult Free-Ranging Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Alexander J. Pritchard, Lori K. Sheeran, Kara I. Gabriel, Jin-Hua Li, Ronald S. Wagner

Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship

To further the potential for applied personality studies, we present a methodology for assessing personality in nonhuman animals without a priori assumptions, using behavioral measures to discriminate personality survey results. Our study group consisted of 12 free-ranging, provisioned, adult Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys, China. We asked familiar Chinese park guards and scientists to rate each of the 12 macaques using 27-item personality surveys. We also recorded behavioral observations (> 100 hrs) from August–September, 2012. The personality surveys showed reliability in 22 of the items that were then utilized in a principal component analysis …

Lead Toxicity: What Is It And How Is It Happening?, Kimberly A. Parada, Ba, Jay S. Schneider, Phd

Department of Pathology Honors Program Student Research Symposium

EPIDEMIOLOGY

Lead poisoning accounts for 0.6% of the global burden of disease.

In Pennsylvania in 2010, 148,751 children under 72 months of age were tested for blood lead levels. Of those children, 19,176 had blood lead levels greater than 5 μg/dl.

  • A lower socioeconomic status increases the chances for lead exposure.
  • Lead toxicity is an under-appreciated problem that is entirely preventable.

Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma Arising From Age-Related Ebv-Associated Lymphoproliferative Disorder (Ar-Ebvlpd), Alaina Chodoff, Msii, Guldeep Uppal, Md, Jerald Z. Gong, Md

Department of Pathology Honors Program Student Research Symposium

In the setting of underlying immune suppression, Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is a well-recognized oncogenic agent that induces the malignant proliferation of B-cells. EBV-lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) have recently been linked to immunosenescence. We present a unique case of Age-Related EBV-Lymphoproliferative Disorder (AR-EBVLPD) in a 70 year old female that deviates from the characteristic progression of this disease. Over the course of 18 months, the patient’s clinical condition worsened without a definitive diagnosis to explain the severe, atypical widespread chronic inflammation spanning her gastrointestinal tract, from esophagus to small bowel. The diagnosis of AR-EBVLPD, polymorphic extranodal subtype, was delayed until the …

Characterization Of The Granule-Bound Starch Synthase I Gene In Chenopodium, Douglass C. Brown Jun 2014

Characterization Of The Granule-Bound Starch Synthase I Gene In Chenopodium, Douglass C. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Chenopodium L. is a relatively under-studied genus that includes the cultivated seed crop quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.). Quinoa is an allotetraploid (2n=4x=36, AABB genomes) that is cultivated by subsistence farmers and commercial growers in the Andean regions of South America. Approximately 60% of a quinoa seed is starch, a glucose polymer that is an important carbohydrate energy source in the human diet. Seed starch is normally comprised of amylose and amylopectin in a 1:3 ratio, but starches with different amylose:amylopectin ratios have different properties and potential uses. The accumulation of the amylose fraction of starch is controlled by a single …

Associations Between Sports Scheduling, Food "Away From Home" And Dietary Intake In Growing Girls, Catherine Manuel Zymaris Jun 2014

Associations Between Sports Scheduling, Food "Away From Home" And Dietary Intake In Growing Girls, Catherine Manuel Zymaris

Theses - ALL

Despite evidence that family meals promote key nutrient intakes, consumption of "away from home" food may be increasing among growing children. We hypothesized that greater consumption of food "away from home" would be associated with lower key nutrient intakes in girls, but be counteracted by predictable sports scheduling. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated key nutrient intakes, measures of food "away from home" ("Fried Food Away From Home" (FFAH); "Dinner Out"), gymnast status, and body mass index (BMI) in 67 growing girls. Girls completed the Youth Adolescent Questionnaire to assess dietary intake. Independent samples t-tests or ANOVAs were used to …

The Relationships Between Diet, Physical Activity And Dual Plane (3d) Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (Dxa) Bone Outcomes In Pre-Pubertal Girls, Jie Ren

Theses - ALL

Osteoporotic fractures are a leading cause of morbidity in the U.S. Bone mass levels during childhood play a key role in determining peak bone mass and hence the risk of osteoporosis in later life. The aim of the study was to evaluate how key bone nutrients and organized physical activity affect bone outcomes in pre-pubertal girls using Dual Plane Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). This cross-sectional analysis used a subset of participants (n=50) from a longitudinal study of bone growth in relation to physical activity. Dietary data were collected using the Youth/Adolescent Questionnaire (YAQ, 1995) and organized activity was recorded semi-annually …

Effects Of Ovariectomy And Anatomical Position On The Compact Bone As Seen In Three Month Summer Ovine Model, Bryan C. Kraft Jun 2014

Effects Of Ovariectomy And Anatomical Position On The Compact Bone As Seen In Three Month Summer Ovine Model, Bryan C. Kraft

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to characterize the compact-bone remodeling response to an ovariectomy model of human postmenopausal osteoporosis. Animal models are a beneficial practice allowing for the evaluation of the effectiveness of medical therapies and devices on diseases. The ovine model was chosen for this study due to its large size, similar bone remodeling to humans, and cost effectiveness. The main obstacle to overcome with the use of the ovine model was the lack of natural menopause experienced by this species. To overcome this, it was necessary to perform an ovariectomy to create estrogen depletion and artificially induce …
