The Economic Causes And Consequences Of Overweight And Obesity In The United States, David Alan Lempert Jun 2014

The Economic Causes And Consequences Of Overweight And Obesity In The United States, David Alan Lempert

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Obesity is a serious public health issue, associated with increased risks of premature death, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, breathing problems, arthritis, reproductive complications, and other diseases. There are economic causes and consequences of overweight and obesity. Researchers have recently suggested that the inability of Body Mass Index to appropriately distinguish between body fat and non-body fat components may lead to inaccurate results when analyzing the economics of obesity. I use Percentage Body Fat, defined as Body Fat divided by the sum of Fat-Free Mass and Body Fat, as the primary measure of body composition.

A growing body of literature explores …

Students’ Digital Photography Behaviors During A Multiday Environmental Science Field Trip And Their Recollections Of Photographed Science Content, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Taking photographs to document the experiences of an educational field trip is becoming a common activity for teachers and students alike. Considering the regular creation of photographic artifacts, our goal in this paper is to explore students’ picture taking behavior and their recollections of science content associated with their photographs. In this study, we partnered with a class of fifth-grade students in the United States and provided each student with a digital camera to document their experiences during an environmental science field trip at a national park. We report the frequency of photography behaviors according to which activities were most …

Tracing The Impact Of Market Reform On Productivity Growth Of Rice At The Farm Level In Bangladesh, Mj Alam, Ia Begum, S Rahman, J Buysse, Gv Huylenbroeck Jun 2014

Tracing The Impact Of Market Reform On Productivity Growth Of Rice At The Farm Level In Bangladesh, Mj Alam, Ia Begum, S Rahman, J Buysse, Gv Huylenbroeck

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper measures the total factor productivity (TFP), technical change (TC) and technical efficiency change (TEC) in rice production, and traces the impact of market reform policies of the 1990s on these indices at the farm level in Bangladesh using a unique cohort of three-period panel data (1987, 2000 and 2004) of 73 farms by applying stochastic production frontier approach. Results reveal that the TFP index has increased by 27% largely due to an upward shift of the technology frontier. Although TC has increased by an impressive 57%, TEC declined by 30.1% during the post-reform period, thereby depressing overall TFP …

Deforestation And The Islamic Stewardship Ethic, Misbah Alghamdi Jun 2014

Deforestation And The Islamic Stewardship Ethic, Misbah Alghamdi

Theses

Forests throughout the world continue to be in danger as a result of human activity. Although the average rate of deforestation has recently slowed, in some countries the rate of forest degradation remains high. Currently, numerous management efforts are underway to address this environmental crisis. In some cases the achievement of forest preservation has been related to ethical choices. One moral posture, anthropocentrism, which views human beings as central and the most significant species on the planet, is believed to be a primary cause of environmental degradation includes deforestation.

This paper aims to address deforestation with the reconfiguration of an …

The Effects Of Organizational Justice And Exercise On The Relationship Between Job Stressors And Employee Health, Ana Cristina B. Costa Jun 2014

The Effects Of Organizational Justice And Exercise On The Relationship Between Job Stressors And Employee Health, Ana Cristina B. Costa

Dissertations and Theses

Recent decades have seen an explosion of research centered on understanding the influential impact that job stressors have on employees' subjective well-being, and now more recently, on objective assessments of physical health. Utilizing baseline data from a larger study funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), I conducted a field study on blue-collar employees from two organizations in the construction industry, with the goal of exploring the impact of job stressors on job satisfaction (subjective well-being) and body mass index (objective health), as well as the influence of organizational justice as a moderator and exercise as …

Constitutional Limitations On Sovereignty, 2014 Edition, Garrett Power Jun 2014

Constitutional Limitations On Sovereignty, 2014 Edition, Garrett Power

Book Gallery

This is an “open content” casebook intended for classroom use in courses in Constitutional Law, Land Use Control, and Environmental Law. It consists of 130 odd judicial opinions (most rendered by the U.S. Supreme Court) carefully selected from the two hundred years of American constitutional history which address the clash between public sovereignty and private property. The text considers both the personal right to liberty and the personal right in property.

The readings provide an historical context, and an up-to-date focus on many of the constitutional issues facing today’s Supreme Court: imperium versus dominium; the public trust, inverse condemnation, the …

Patch-Burn Grazing Effects On Cattle Performance: Research Conducted In A Working Landscape, Stephen L. Winter, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Mark Goes Jun 2014

Patch-Burn Grazing Effects On Cattle Performance: Research Conducted In A Working Landscape, Stephen L. Winter, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Mark Goes

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

• Patch-burn grazing is a range management strategy that might be able to simultaneously optimize livestock production objectives and wildlife habitat objectives.

• We compared patch-burn grazing to a traditional range management strategy in multiple pastures, representing a variety of land ownership and management histories, dispersed across a relatively large geographic area. Our results likely represent what land managers could expect if they adopted patch-burn grazing in similar situations.

• We found that cattle performance in pastures managed with patch-burn grazing did not differ from that found in pastures managed with a traditional range management strategy. This suggests that land …

Vegetable Production Concentration In Northwest Mexico, Desiree Michelle Danel Jun 2014

Vegetable Production Concentration In Northwest Mexico, Desiree Michelle Danel

Master's Theses

An American company that supplies premium quality hybrid vegetable seed to commercial growers in the southern part of the US, Mexico, and Central America sought an assessment of the market potential in the Northwest region of Mexico by identifying land area and production concentrations of vegetables by location, crop, and cultivation method, whether open-field, greenhouse, or shade house.

Data on the cultivated area of four states in the Northwest region of Mexico was collected for 12 crops of interest for the period of 2003-2012 from secondary sources. Data was entered into a statistical software program to complete frequency distribution charts …

The Effects Of Foreign Aid For Health On Health Outcomes In Developing Countries, Leah R. Burfeind Jun 2014

The Effects Of Foreign Aid For Health On Health Outcomes In Developing Countries, Leah R. Burfeind

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effectiveness of foreign aid for health on the child mortality rate in developing countries. This is a controversial subject as many economists have found grounds to believe it is effective while others provide rationale for why it is ineffective. Based on panel data analysis, this study looks at the effects of external resources for health as a percentage of health spending on the child mortality rate in developing countries to determine how effective aid for health is in terms of improving health outcomes. With an understanding of the current nature of …

Ice-Binding Proteins That Accumulate On Different Ice Crystal Planes Produce Distinct Thermal Hysteresis Dynamics, Ran Drori, Yeliz Celik, Peter L. Davies, Ido Braslavsky Jun 2014

Ice-Binding Proteins That Accumulate On Different Ice Crystal Planes Produce Distinct Thermal Hysteresis Dynamics, Ran Drori, Yeliz Celik, Peter L. Davies, Ido Braslavsky

Physics Faculty Research

Ice-binding proteins that aid the survival of freeze-avoiding, cold-adapted organisms by inhibiting the growth of endogenous ice crystals are called antifreeze proteins (AFPs). The binding of AFPs to ice causes a separation between the melting point and the freezing point of the ice crystal (thermal hysteresis, TH). TH produced by hyperactive AFPs is an order of magnitude higher than that produced by a typical fish AFP. The basis for this difference in activity remains unclear. Here, we have compared the time dependence of TH activity for both hyperactive and moderately active AFPs using a custom-made nanolitre osmometer and a novel …
