Application Of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics To Study The Central Metabolism Of Staphylococci, Bo Zhang Jun 2014

Application Of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics To Study The Central Metabolism Of Staphylococci, Bo Zhang

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Metabolomics studies the collection of small molecules (metabolites) involved in enzymatically catalyzed reactions, cell signaling and cellular structure. Perturbations in metabolite concentrations have been used to reflect the activity of corresponding enzymes or proteins. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a well-known approach for the structure determination of biological macromolecules. Alternatively, NMR has recently been established as a valuable tool of metabolomics, in which NMR spectral signals correlate small molecules with cellular activities. This has been accomplished through the chemometric analysis of high-throughput one dimensional 1H spectra (metabolic fingerprinting) and quantitative metabolite identification based on two dimensional 1H, …

Early Developmental Impacts On Male Traits And Female Preference In Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia Guttata), Martyna Boruta Jun 2014

Early Developmental Impacts On Male Traits And Female Preference In Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia Guttata), Martyna Boruta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Some male sexually selected traits are sensitive to stressors early in life and provide females with information to discriminate among males with different developmental experiences. Moreover, female early life experiences could also impact which males they choose. Females might either choose honest traits indicative of male quality, no matter their own experiences, or they might choose mates to match or compensate for their own experiences. To determine how developmental stressors alter male sexually-selected traits and female preference thereof, I exposed zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata, ZEFI) to i) lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an immunogenic, Gram-negative bacterial component, ii) corticosterone (CORT), an avian stress …

White Nose Syndrome Of Bats: Lipid Profiling And Enzyme Identification In A Host/Pathogen System, Evan Lacy Pannkuk Jun 2014

White Nose Syndrome Of Bats: Lipid Profiling And Enzyme Identification In A Host/Pathogen System, Evan Lacy Pannkuk

Student Theses and Dissertations

Pseudogymnoascus destructans is a fungus isolated from cave-dwelling bats that is the pathogen responsible for white-nose syndrome (WNS) and the associated mass mortality of North American cave bats. This study addresses isolation and identification of biomolecules that may function in host/pathogen interactions in WNS. Fungal skin infections requires fungal adherence and growth on the host organism integumentary matrix, which consists of hard cornified insoluble structural proteins coated with lipid residues from epidermal cells or sebaceous secretions. There is a knowledge gap on how molecules present on the bat integument are utilized as carbon or nitrogen sources by P. destructans. I …

Environment, Rights, And Waste In Bolivia: Addressing Water And Sanitation Processes For Improved Infrastructure, Maryann R. Cairns Jun 2014

Environment, Rights, And Waste In Bolivia: Addressing Water And Sanitation Processes For Improved Infrastructure, Maryann R. Cairns

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water and sanitation (WatSan) development projects impact both natural systems and societal structures where they are placed. A complex process of development, including inter-governmental policies, aid agencies, personal relationships, and community politics enhance and constrain the efficacy of these projects. This study presents the many ways in which the WatSan development process has unintended and unexpected returns for certain community groups. Using a political ecology framework, I look at power structures, perceived and projected environmental impacts, multiple stakeholders, and individual discourses to critique how the right to water and sanitation is implemented in a specific community context. This project advances …

Identification Of Novel Small Rnas And Characterization Of The 6s Rna Of Coxiella Burnetii, Indu Warrier, Linda D. Hicks, James M. Battisti, Rahul Raghavan, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes Q fever, undergoes a biphasic developmental cycle that alternates between a metabolically-active large cell variant (LCV) and a dormant small cell variant (SCV). As such, the bacterium undoubtedly employs complex modes of regulating its lifecycle, metabolism and pathogenesis. Small RNAs (sRNAs) have been shown to play important regulatory roles in controlling metabolism and virulence in several pathogenic bacteria. We hypothesize that sRNAs are involved in regulating growth and development of C. burnetii and its infection of host cells. To address the hypothesis and identify potential sRNAs, we subjected total RNA …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

The relevance of academic library to people outside the academic setting needs to be redefined because of restrictions and non inclusion of their information needs in collection development policy. The study therefore evaluated town-gown relationship in Ondo State Nigeria with direct cognisance to assessment of Community Information Services (CISs) by academic libraries. Complete enumeration sampling technique was adopted to distribute questionnaires to all 58 librarians working in academic libraries in the State. 52 questionnaires were returned and found useful. The response rate was therefore 89.7%. The study found that CISs were being rendered mainly to scholars who visited the …

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Posters

Poster presented at: CPDD Scientific Meeting, San Juan, PR.

Aims: NAS incidence & severity in infants exposed to methadone during gestation is independent of maternal methadone dose. The incidence & severity of NAS could be in part due to genetic variability of key genetic loci related to opioid response; the interleukin-1beta (IL-1B) & mu opioid receptor (OPRM1) genes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of genetic variability in IL-1B -31 or OPRM1 A118G on NAS incidence (treatment required) & severity (dose of morphine).

Methods: This pilot study collected cheek cells from 71 methadone exposed infants; 46 …

Elaborate Visual And Acoustic Signals Evolve Independently In A Large, Phenotypically Diverse Radiation Of Songbirds, Nicholas A. Mason, Allison J. Shultz, Kevin J. Burns

Faculty Publications

The concept of a macroevolutionary trade-off among sexual signals has a storied history in evolutionary biology. Theory predicts that if multiple sexual signals are costly for males to produce or maintain and females prefer a single, sexually selected trait, then an inverse correlation between sexual signal elaborations is expected among species. However, empirical evidence for what has been termed the 'transfer hypothesis' is mixed, which may reflect different selective pressures among lineages, evolutionary covariates or methodological differences among studies. Here,we examine interspecific correlations between song and plumage elaboration in a phenotypically diverse, widespread radiation of songbirds, the tanagers. The tanagers …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Seaweed and seagrass communities in the northeast Atlantic have been profoundly impacted by humans, and the rate of change is accelerating rapidly due to runaway CO2 emissions and mounting pressures on coastlines associated with human population growth and increased consumption of finite resources. Here, we predict how rapid warming and acidification are likely to affect benthic flora and coastal ecosystems of the northeast Atlantic in this century, based on global evidence from the literature as interpreted by the collective knowledge of the authorship. We predict that warming will kill off kelp forests in the south and that ocean acidification will …

Traversing Swanton Road, 16th Ed., James A. West Jun 2014

Traversing Swanton Road, 16th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Designers In Complex Problem Solving: The Contribution Of Systems Thinking, John Darzentas, Jenny Darzentas Jun 2014

Designers In Complex Problem Solving: The Contribution Of Systems Thinking, John Darzentas, Jenny Darzentas

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper, attempts to provide a useful perspective of Systems Thinking’s contribution to Design’s theoretical grounding for both research and education. ‘Useful’ in the sense that it will equip design students and graduate professionals with a supportive and productive way of thinking about Design. This is viewed against the trend of more and more multidisciplinary design problems emerging where designers are asked to deal with the complexity which is inherent in such problems. Thus this discourse is also framed in understandings of interdisciplinarity and further, transdisciplinarity, to attempt to gain some traction on these heterogeneous domains. Such domains are subject …

Communication Design As An Agent In Creating Gender Equality In India, Nicola St John Jun 2014

Communication Design As An Agent In Creating Gender Equality In India, Nicola St John

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Developing from the field of behavior change through design, this study investigated if communication design is an effective tool in changing cultural behaviors and perceptions of gender in India. Previous studies on gender violence campaigns (Gadornski, 2001; Murphy, 2009; Kostick et al., 2011) suggest utilising men and traditional gender stereotypes are effective in creating behavior change. Yet there exists a gap on specific cultural roles and changing ingrained behaviors. This study focuses on the necessary recognition of cultural traditions and behaviours that must precede any design activity within an epistemological setting. Developing communication strategy within sensitive and complex social issues …
