The Use Of Non-Nutritive Sweeteners In Establishing And Maintaining A Healthy Weight, Derrick Pickering, Mary Williams Jul 2014

The Use Of Non-Nutritive Sweeteners In Establishing And Maintaining A Healthy Weight, Derrick Pickering, Mary Williams

Student Works

Obesity is an epidemic and continues to rise. The associated increased risk of mortality and co-morbid conditions is well documented. The use non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) is a strategy being used to manage weight by reducing calorie intake. Research is inconclusive regarding the efficacy of NNS in weight management due to their inappropriate use and also the potential they may increase appetite. To most effectively manage weight, a comprehensive individualized plan must be devise of which proper use NNS may be a part.

Determination Of Thiamine In Solution By Uv-Visible Spectrophotometry: The Effect Of Interactions With Gold Nanoparticles, Michael Vincent Zielinski Jul 2014

Determination Of Thiamine In Solution By Uv-Visible Spectrophotometry: The Effect Of Interactions With Gold Nanoparticles, Michael Vincent Zielinski

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The method presented here provides the foundation for a simple and selective qualitative determination of thiamine in solution. Gold nanoparticles in the presence of thiamine results in the formation of a secondary peak in the absorbance spectrum of the mixture. This peak can be used as an indicator of thiamine, which is useful for the qualitative analysis of solutions, and may provide an alternative to other methods for evaluating thiamine in blood and other biological systems. This method uses gold nanoparticles of a size around 20 to 30 nm and involves their selective interaction with thiamine, compared to selected amino …

Democratizing The Food System- The Food Policy Council Movement, Garrett Spear

Kaleidoscope

The increasing complexity of our modern food system has changed the landscape of American agriculture and diet, and has increasingly consolidated decision-making abilities in a concentrated group of organizations. Local food movements are re-appropriating their food supply chains through a variety of methods, including the democratic-minded food policy council organization. Food policy councils organize community stakeholders into a network of organizations which can collectively grapple with food issues affecting and on behalf of the local community. This study consisted of research on the history and methods of the food policy council movement, directed ultimately at the council-less context in Lexington …

Implications Of Vertebral Degenative Disease And Vertebral Ligamentous Ossification In Native Populations Of The Lower Tennessee River Valley, Sarah Ann Boncal Jul 2014

Implications Of Vertebral Degenative Disease And Vertebral Ligamentous Ossification In Native Populations Of The Lower Tennessee River Valley, Sarah Ann Boncal

Theses and Dissertations

Cervical vertebrae are an effective biomechanical proxy for understanding physical activities of a populace due to the osteological reactivity of nuchal muscle use to extensive weight and pressure. Differentiation in the distribution of osteophytosis (OPL), osteoarthritis (OA), and ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) along the cervical vertebrae may indicate particular biomechanical stresses and/or burden-bearing differences between subsistence strategies.

A collection of 287 pre-Columbian Native American individuals (N = 854 vertebrae) was analyzed for presence and severity of OPL, OA and OLF. The sample consists of remains from six archaeological sites located in the lower Tennessee River Valley: three sites …

Reproducing Prevention: Teen Pregnancy And Intimate Citizenship In The Post-Welfare Era, Clare M. Daniel

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines the politics of teen pregnancy prevention in the 1990s and early 2000s within public policy, popular culture, and local and national nonprofit advocacy. Widely viewed as a distressing social problem, teenage reproduction has provoked decades of prevention and regulation that pervade across public and private sectors. Teen pregnancy has been associated with, if not fully blamed for, a host of other so-called social problems throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and the beginning of the twenty-first century. As scholars such as Kristen Luker and Lisa Arai have labored to illustrate, causal connections between adolescent reproduction and the social ills …

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon Jul 2014

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon

Nursing ETDs

A number of states have adopted certification programs for community health workers (CHWs) to increase oversight, allow for direct funding, and improve recognition of CHWs as members of the health care team. More states are considering CHW certification programs to increase the use of CHWs by health care organizations with the hopes of improving health outcomes and decreasing health disparities. There has been little research into the impact of state CHW certification on the adoption and dissemination of CHWs into the existing health care system. This study examined the impact of state CHW certification on the perceptions of team climate …

Doctrine & Covenants Section 89 is known as the "health code" for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In verse 13 of this scripture, the Lord states, “it is pleasing unto me that they [flesh of beasts and fowls of the air] should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine” (D&C 89:13). Judging from the variety of interpretations this single verse has inspired, it would appear to be deeply enigmatic. Interestingly, most interpretations have been put forward with little supporting evidence. This article is the first comprehensive analysis of the …

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler Jul 2014

"Wake Up The Knowledge That You Have": An Assessment Of Community Food Security In Fellsmere, Florida, Susan Marie Tyler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the global industrial agricultural system many people lack access to high-quality nutritious foods and food production techniques are often inefficient and reliant on harsh chemical inputs. While numerous strategies exist to address the disparities present in the global food system, increasingly researchers and practitioners are looking to local food systems for solutions to strengthen community food security (CFS). CFS emphasizes small-scale production strategies such as farmer's markets, community gardens, and consumer supported agriculture. As these efforts evolve, research is needed to understand how these strategies affect communities. To explore a local CFS initiative, qualitative data were collected from community …

Diabetes Screening In Inmates: A Quality Improvement Pilot Project, Mary Ellen Castro

Doctoral Dissertations

Implementation and adherence to screening recommendations of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) clinical practice guidelines are associated with earlier diagnosis and treatment. Standardized T2D screening helps ensure consistency of care and decrease unnecessary testing by targeting those at greatest risk for developing the disease. The aim of this quality improvement pilot project was to facilitate standardized T2D screening of inmates within a correctional system. The number and frequency of selected preexisting major T2D risk factors identified within a sample of inmates diagnosed during incarceration were described. A clinical panel reviewed these data and identified the guideline that best addressed T2D risk …

Methylseleninic Acid Sensitizes Notch3-Activated Ovca429 Ovarian Cancer Cells To Carboplatin., Tiffany J. Tzeng, Lei Cao, Yangxin Fu, Huawei Zeng, Wen-Hsing Cheng

CALS Publications

Ovarian cancer, the deadliest of gynecologic cancers, is usually not diagnosed until advanced stages. Although carboplatin has been popular for treating ovarian cancer for decades, patients eventually develop resistance to this platinum-containing drug. Expression of neurogenic locus notch homolog 3 (Notch3) is associated with chemoresistance and poor overall survival in ovarian cancer patients. Overexpression of NICD3 (the constitutively active form of Notch3) in OVCA429 ovarian cancer cells (OVCA429/NICD3) renders them resistance to carboplatin treatment compared to OVCA429/pCEG cells expressing an empty vector. We have previously shown that methylseleninic acid (MSeA) induces oxidative stress and activates ataxia-telangiectasia mutated and DNA-dependent protein …

Using The Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Compositions Of Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus Pygerythrus) To Examine Questions In Ethnoprimatology, James E. Loudon, J. Paul Grobler, Matt Sponheimer, Kimberly Moyer, Joseph G. Lorenz, Trudy R. Turner

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This study seeks to understand how humans impact the dietary patterns of eight free-ranging vervet monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) groups in South Africa using stable isotope analysis. Vervets are omnivores that exploit a wide range of habitats including those that have been anthropogenically-disturbed. As humans encroach upon nonhuman primate landscapes, human-nonhuman primate interconnections become increasingly common, which has led to the rise of the field of ethnoprimatology. To date, many ethnoprimatological studies have examined human-nonhuman primate associations largely in qualitative terms. By using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis, we use quantitative data …

Healthy Living Needs Global Governance, Lawrence O. Gostin Jul 2014

Healthy Living Needs Global Governance, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

It may seem counter-intuitive, but the same factors that drive the spread of infectious diseases also contribute to the dominance of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the global burden of disease—urbanization, global markets and harmonized cultures. NCDs have overtaken infectious diseases as the leading cause of morbidity and premature mortality worldwide, with deaths concentrated among the poor due to the growing availability and affordability of highly-processed, unhealthy foods, alcohol and tobacco.

The global response to NCDs has been slow and fractured, with the World Health Organization dedicating scant funding and the United Nations waiting until September 2011 to hold a high-level …

When Stephanie Looney '02 says she battled anorexia for six years, she means it. Every second, every day, was consumed by her obsession. Even sleep didn't bring a reprieve. "I used to dream about food," Looney said. "I'd have terrifying nightmares that I ate a bowl of cereal."

Looney, a bright, articulate woman who is now leaning towards a forensic science career, developed anorexia when she was 14 and became overwhelmed with pressures. She was participating in sports year-round, found she had to start working to earn those once-assumed A's and was experiencing a home life she describes as "miserable". …

The Influence Of Cumulative Risk Factors On The Cognitive Abilities Of Low-Income, African- American Preschool Children, Cassandra L. Esposito Jul 2014

The Influence Of Cumulative Risk Factors On The Cognitive Abilities Of Low-Income, African- American Preschool Children, Cassandra L. Esposito

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A large number of children are exposed to multiple risk factors within the first 3 years of life, resulting in poorer child developmental outcomes. Additionally, exposure to multiple risks is especially prevalent in low-income populations. Several studies have found that multiple maternal and biological risks such as maternal depression, physical health or illness, other sociodemographic risks, and low birth weight lead to poor child outcomes, such as lower cognitive achievement at preschool age. The current study investigated the influence of both maternal and infant biological risks in a cumulative risk model on predicting preschool children’s cognitive outcomes. Hierarchical multiple regression …
