Improving The Efficiency Of Electrical Stimulation Activities After Spinal Cord Injury, David Dolbow, William R. Holcomb, Ashraf Gorgey
Improving The Efficiency Of Electrical Stimulation Activities After Spinal Cord Injury, David Dolbow, William R. Holcomb, Ashraf Gorgey
Faculty Publications
In order to enhance spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation programs using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) it is important to examine the manner in which muscle fibers are recruited and the dose–response relationship. A review of the literature suggests that premature force decline and early fatigue with NMES and FES activities may be alleviated with decreased current frequency and increased current intensity. Dose–response relationships with NMES and FES are dependent on the goals of interest as reversing muscle atrophy can be achieved with activities 2–3 times per week for 6 or more weeks while increasing bone …

Influence Of Resource Levels, Organic Compounds And Laboratory Colonization On Interspecific Competition Between The Asian Tiger Mosquito Aedes Albopictus (Stegomyia Albopicta) And The Southern House Mosquito Culex Quinquefasciatus, D.W. Allgood, Donald A. Yee
Faculty Publications
The mosquitoes Aedes albopictus (Stegomyia albopicta) (Skuse) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) are common inhabitants of tyres and other artificial containers, which constitute important peridomestic mosquito breeding habitats. We tested the hypotheses that interspecific resource competition between the larvae of these species is asymmetrical, that the concentration of chemicals associated with decomposing detritus affects the competitive outcomes of these species, and that wild and colonized strains of Cx. quinquefasciatus are affected differently by competition with Ae. albopictus. We conducted two laboratory competition experiments wherein we measured survivorship and estimated population growth (λ′) in both species under …
Shuttered: An Examination Of How The 2013 Chicago Public School Closings Are Denying Special Education Students The Right To An Appropriate Public Education, Michael Toren
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Recently, the Chicago Public School system faced financial crisis as it struggled to balance severe budget cuts against overwhelming pension obligations. CPS responded to the crisis by immediately closing forty-nine elementary schools and terminating the employment of thousands of teachers and support staff. The displaced students, including many with special needs, were hastily transferred to surrounding schools without meaningful evaluation of the impact of the closings or the resources the receiving schools could provide. After a brief history of the disability rights movement, special education laws, and the crisis that led to the CPS closings, this Comment argues that the …

Many insects are associated with heritable symbionts that mediate ecological interactions, including host protection against natural enemies. The cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora, is a polyphagous pest that harbors Hamiltonella defensa, which defends against parasitic wasps. Despite this protective benefit, this symbiont occurs only at intermediate frequencies in field populations. To identify factors constraining H. defensa invasion in Ap. craccivora, we estimated symbiont transmission rates, performed fitness assays, and measured infection dynamics in population cages to evaluate effects of infection. Similar to results with the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, we found no consistent costs to infection using …
Baylisascaris Procyonis Prevalence And Impact In Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Populations, Matthew Ingle
Baylisascaris Procyonis Prevalence And Impact In Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Populations, Matthew Ingle
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Baylisascaris procyonis is a nematode parasite that infects the small intestines of raccoons (Procyon lotor). Raccoons are the definitive host for this parasite, which can have both an indirect and direct life cycle. In intermediate hosts, the parasite causes serious pathology resulting from larvae migrating through host tissue to the brain. Infection via exposure to B. procyonis eggs is fatal in over 90 vertebrate species that serve as intermediate hosts, including humans. The zoonotic potential of B. procyonis makes understanding factors that impact prevalence and pathology in raccoons important for management strategies. Alimentary canals from 226 raccoons trapped in nine …
Effects Of Cigarette Smoking On Neurocognitive Performance In Dementia Patients, Christina Mannino
Effects Of Cigarette Smoking On Neurocognitive Performance In Dementia Patients, Christina Mannino
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Dementia has become a serious problem worldwide due to the rapidly increasing incidence rate and the lack of effective treatments that cure or slow disease progression, and thus. prevention is crucial. Some studies suggests that cigarette smoking may increase the risk of developing dementia, but others suggest that smoking may have a neuroprotective effect. To clarify our understanding of the relationship between cigarette smoking and dementia, this study examined the effects of smoking on multiple cognitive domains via secondary data analysis of a sample consisting of 54% female subjects with an average age of 58±13 years. Measures of executive function, …
Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes In The Nicu: A Pilot Study, Kathleen H. Parker
Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes In The Nicu: A Pilot Study, Kathleen H. Parker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous research has shown that having a child in the NICU is stressful for parents and that parents of NICU infants exhibit higher levels of stress compared to parents of healthy infants (Carter, Mulder, & Darow, 2007; MacDonald, 2007; Treyvaud et al., 2010). In addition, studies have found a correlation between improved parental mental health and shorter length of stay for infants in the NICU (Als et al., 2003). However, studies have not investigated the direction of the relationship between parental mental health and infant outcomes in the NICU, specifically whether poor parental mental health is impacting child outcomes such …

Community Gardens To Fight Urban Youth Crime And Stabilize Neighborhoods, Art Mccabe
Education Faculty Publications
Chronic poor health within inner cities is usually the result of prolonged exposure to a multitude of health disparities. These disparities, are exacerbated by poverty, high unemployment, crime and youth violence. In many cases, these factors increase neighborhood instability and civic disengagement. Community garden programs can strengthen civic engagement and foster neighborhood stability, while simultaneously cutting down on youth violence. Community garden programs address the accumulation of health challenges in many ways and provide curative building blocks to deal with poor nutrition, obesity, diabetes, psychological disorders, and deficient growth of infants, substance abuse, civic detachment and suicide rate. Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
Circulating angiogenic cells (CACs) are a diverse group that have been identified as predictors of cardiovascular health and are inversely proportional to cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes. Inactivity is a growing concern in industrialized nations and is an independent risk factor for CVD. There is limited evidence regarding the impact of reduced physical activity (rPA) on different CAC populations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of objectively monitored rPA with maintained energy balance on two CAC populations (CFU and CD34+cells), intracellular nitric oxide (NOi), and genes related to NO production in active, healthy men. Participants (age 25 …

Absence of the maxillary lateral incisor creates an aesthetic problem which can be managed in various ways. The condition requires careful treatment planning and consideration of the options and outcomes following either space closure or prosthetic replacement. Recent developments in restorative dentistry have warranted a re-evaluation of the approach to this clinical situation. Factors relating both to the patient and the teeth, including the presentation of malocclusion and the effect on the occlusion must be considered. The objective of this study was to describe the etiology, prevalence and alternative treatment modalities for dental agenesis and to present a clinical case …

The Trehalose Pathway In Maize: Conservation And Gene Regulation In Response To The Diurnal Cycle And Extended Darkness, Clémence Henry, Samuel W. Bledsoe, Allison Siekman, Alec Kollman, Brian M. Waters, Regina Feil, Mark Stitt, L. Mark Lagrimini
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Energy resources in plants are managed in continuously changing environments, such as changes occurring during the day/night cycle. Shading is an environmental disruption that decreases photosynthesis, compromises energy status, and impacts on crop productivity. The trehalose pathway plays a central but not well-defined role in maintaining energy balance. Here, we characterized the maize trehalose pathway genes and deciphered the impacts of the diurnal cycle and disruption of the day/night cycle on trehalose pathway gene expression and sugar metabolism. The maize genome encodes 14 trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) genes, 11 trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) genes, and one trehalase gene. Transcript abundance of most …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Predict Infant Restraint Use In Saudi Arabia, Anna Nelson, Naomi N. Modeste, Helen H. Marshak, Joyce W. Hopp
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the theory of planned behavior (TPB) predicted intent of child restraint system (CRS) use among pregnant women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted in Dallah Hospital, Riyadh, KSA during June-July 2013, 196 pregnant women completed surveys assessing their beliefs regarding CRS. Simultaneous observations were conducted among a different sample of 150 women to determine CRS usage at hospital discharge following maternity stay. RESULTS: Logistic regression model with TPB constructs and covariates as predictors of CRS usage intent was significant (χ2=64.986, p<0.0001) and predicted 38% of intent. There was an increase in odds of intent for attitudes (31.5%, p<0.05), subjective norm (55.3%, p<0.001), and perceived behavioral control (76.9%, p<0.001). The 3 logistic regression models testing the association of the relevant set of composite belief scores were also significant for attitudes (χ2=16.803, p<0.05), subjective norm (χ2=29.681, p<0.0001), and perceived behavioral control (χ2=20.516, p<0.05). The behavioral observation showed that none of the 150 women observed used CRS for their newborn at discharge. CONCLUSION: The TPB constructs were significantly and independently associated with higher intent for CRS usage. While TPB appears to be a useful tool to identify beliefs related to CRS usage intentions in KSA, the results of the separate behavioral observation indicate that intentions may not be related to the actual usage of CRS in the Kingdom. Further studies are recommended to examine this association.

The Role Of Novel Gene Ul79 Encoded By Human Cytomegalovirus In Viral Replication, Yi-Chieh Perng
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous pathogen that infects the majority of the world's population. Even though HCMV infection is usually asymptomatic, it acts as an opportunistic pathogen and is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals, including transplant recipients and AIDS/HIV patients. Understanding HCMV biology is critical to the development of HCMV therapeutics. However, our current knowledge of HCMV biology is limited by the fact that only less than half of the HCMV genes have been characterized, especially viral essential and augmenting genes which play critical roles in viral replication.
To study the function of HCMV …
