Artificial Diets For Life Tables Bioassays Of Tpb In Mississippi, M. Portilla, G. L. Snodgrass, R. G. Luttrell

Midsouth Entomologist

Two artificial diets for mass rearing and bioassay of the tarnished plant bug, (TPB), Lygus lineolaris Palisot de Beauvois, (Hemiptera: Miridae) were modified and developed, respectively. The first diet is a modification of a semisolid artificial diet (NI diet), which permits large scale rearing of omnivore insects such as TPB and the western tarnished plant bug, (WTPB), Lygus hesperus Knight. Both species can be produced with higher biological fitness values than those reported for both species using the existing standard NI diet. The modified artificial diet cut the coking component (NI carnivore diet), avoided antibiotics, acids, and formaldehyde, and changed …

Organic and/or inorganic fertilizers are used to promote crop growth yet the rate of fertilizer application is often based on the nitrogen needs of the crop and not the phosphorus needs, especially when utilizing animal manures with low N-to-P ratios as compared to plant N:P uptake. Because of this, soil phosphorus levels in many areas of the world are in excess of crop needs. Excessive levels of phosphorus in water bodies such as streams and lakes can result in a condition known as eutrophication. With eutrophication, nutrients promote algal growth which in turn decreases dissolved oxygen levels in receiving water …

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo Sep 2014

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article introduces a new conceptual framework to the legal literature on pregnancy and pregnancy discrimination: the fourth trimester. The concept of a fourth trimester, drawn from maternal nursing and midwifery, refers to the crucial three to six month period after birth when many of the physical, psychological, emotional, and social effects of pregnancy continue. Giving this concept legal relevance extends the scope of pregnancy beyond the narrow period defined by conception, gestation, and birth and acknowledges that pregnancy is a relational process, not an individual event. In the United States, however, antidiscrimination law has failed to acknowledge the demands …

Whither Latin America? Scoping Export Potentials And Trade Barriers In The Malaysia-Chile Partnership, E.S. Devadason, V.G.R. Chandran, S. Mubarik Sep 2014

Whither Latin America? Scoping Export Potentials And Trade Barriers In The Malaysia-Chile Partnership, E.S. Devadason, V.G.R. Chandran, S. Mubarik

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This study seeks to compare bilateral export potential estimates in the Malaysia-Chile partnership within the COntextof the emerging region of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and identify barriers to trade, to provide insights into bilateral market access for exporters. Clearly, the empirical findings suggest overtrading in the major exporting sectors from both sides, since the export basket is also concentrated both ways in the Malaysia-Chile trade. Through the interviews, fewer restrictions are reported by the various stakeholders, as the extent of trade engagement is still somewhat low. Instead, the challenges identified within specific sub-sectors from both sides relate mainly …

Most organisms are able to survive shorter or longer exposure to sub-zero temperatures. Hypothetically, trogloxenes characterized as not adapted, and troglophiles as not completely adapted to thermally stable subterranean environment, have retained or partially retained their ability to withstand freezing, while most troglobionts have not. We tested this hypothesis experimentally on 37 species inhabiting caves in Slovenia, analyzing their lower lethal temperatures in summer and winter, or for one season, if the species was not present in caves during both seasons. Specimens were exposed for 12 hrs to 1°C-stepwise descending temperatures with 48 hr breaks. In general, the resistance to …

All Ye Need To Know, John D. Lamb Sep 2014

All Ye Need To Know, John D. Lamb

BYU Studies

Chemistry and biochemistry professor John D. Lamb, recipient of the 2013 Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award, delivered this forum address on May 20, 2014 at Brigham Young University. Taking his theme from Keats's "Ode on a Grecian Urn," Lamb discusses the value of learning and different ways of gaining knowledge. He contrasts opportunities for light and learning with forces that promote evil and ignorance. Quoting Hugh Nibley, Lamb warns against the dangers of "evading the responsibility of directing our minds to the highest possible object. . . . If the mind is denied functioning to capacity, it will …

Salvinia molesta D. S. Mitchell (Salviniales: Salviniaceae), a small floating fern introduced from South America, is causing an increasing number of problems in the US. Increased reliance on the biocontrol agent, Cyrtobagous salviniae, in the US is becoming more commonplace and several mass-rearing facilities have been developed. Because of differences in sampling protocols including sample size, reporting parameters, and numbers released, an investigation into sampling efficiency was initiated. A small pond in southern Louisiana was sampled in an effort to understand what constitutes an adequate sample size and methodologies needed to estimate numbers of weevils. A clumped distribution in the …

Background: The vitamin D-endocrine system is thought to play a role in physiologic processes that range from mineral metabolism to immune function. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is the accepted biomarker for vitamin D status. Skin color is a key determinant of circulating 25(OH)D concentrations, and genes responsible for melanin content have been shown to be under strong evolutionary selection in populations living in temperate zones. Little is known about the effect of latitude on mean concentrations of 25(OH)D in dark-skinned populations. Objective: The objective was to describe the distribution of 25(OH)D and its subcomponents in 5 population samples of African …

Brief 10: How The United Nations Should Promote The Post-2015 Development Agenda, Kara S. Alaimo

Governance and Sustainability Issue Brief Series

This issue brief examines how the United Nations can most effectively communicate the post- 2015 development agenda in order to catalyze the global movements necessary for its achieve- ment. The author, a former U.N. communications professional, argues that the U.N. should care- fully calibrate expectations in advance, be transparent about the state of negotiations, retain top communications professionals to craft the name and narrative of the agenda, use clear language in the agenda, communicate in “human terms,” make the agenda globally accessible and relevant, and promote shared ownership of the agenda.

Recovery Is Developmental: An Exploration Of Eriksonian Psychosocial Theory Adapted To Eating Disorder Recovery, Ashley Fee

Modern Psychological Studies

This qualitative study investigated women's experiences of recovery from an eating disorder using an adaptation of Erikson's stage theory of recovery from mental illness. Five female participants, ages 20-40 years old and who identified as having an eating disorder and going through some form of treatment, were interviewed regarding their development, experience, and recovery from an eating disorder after completing the EAT-26 survey. Participants' responses were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Three influences within the recovery process emerged through the analysis: personal (self), transitional, and interpersonal (social). The analysis suggests that an adaptation of Erikson 's developmental theory …

Regulation Of Fluid-Phase Uptake In Podocytes By Albumin-Associated Lipids, Jun-Jae Chung Sep 2014

Regulation Of Fluid-Phase Uptake In Podocytes By Albumin-Associated Lipids, Jun-Jae Chung

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

I. Podocytes are specialized epithelial cells in the kidney glomerulus that play important structural and functional roles in maintaining the filtration barrier. In nephrotic syndrome, a major breakdown of the kidney filtration barrier associated with proteinuria, hyperlipidemia, and edema, podocytes undergo changes in morphology and appear to internalize serum proteins. We postulated that fluid-phase uptake by podocytes might play a role in maintaining the integrity of the filtration barrier. Using fluid-phase tracers, we show that podocytes in vivo actively internalize fluid from the serum and that the rate of internalization is enhanced when the filtration barrier is disrupted. In vitro …

Neonatal Sepsis In Rural Ghana: A Case Control Study Of Risk Factors In A Birth Cohort, Mate Siakwa, Dzigbodi Kpikpitse, Sylvia C. Mupepi, Mohamed Semuatu

Peer Reviewed Articles

Neonatal sepsis poses a major challenge to achieving the MDG-4 due to lack of facilities to implement proposed management guidelines. Identifying risk factors of neonatal sepsis will help put strategies in place to prevent sepsis. This prospective case control study investigated risk factors of neonatal sepsis in the Asutifi District a typical rural setting of the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. A semi-structured check list was used to collect clinical and demographic data from 196 neonates (96 with sepsis as case and 100 without sepsis as control) and respective mothers. Maternal factors that were significantly associated with neonatal sepsis were …

Asset Holdings And Undernutrition Of Young Children: Evidence From China Health And Nutrition Survey, Minchao Jin Sep 2014

Asset Holdings And Undernutrition Of Young Children: Evidence From China Health And Nutrition Survey, Minchao Jin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Undernutrition is an underlying determinant of 45% of all childhood deaths annually, resulting in 3.1 million deaths to children less than five years globally (Black et al., 2013). The adverse effects of undernutrition, especially chronic undernutrition, could cause impaired physical growth, mental development retardation, low productivity and poverty during adulthood, and undernutrition of next generation. Worldwide, over 200 million children are undernourished (Black et al., 2013). Thus, there is an imperative to identify effective preventive actions or interventions for child undernutrition. Studies have documented links between undernutrition and low income, but few has tackling the causation from assets to child …

Dynamic Responses At The Barrier Epithelium, Katherine Beebe Sep 2014

Dynamic Responses At The Barrier Epithelium, Katherine Beebe

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

A fundamental question in biology is how cellular systems sense and respond to their environment. The environment is a changing parameter, and cellular life has evolved a multitude of interesting and adaptive ways to sense and respond to external changes. The GI tract is a particularly interesting tissue in which to examine this question. One of few barrier epithelia, the intestine is exposed to both the unique environment of the lumen and the internal environment of the organism. Cells of the intestine simultaneously function as barrier, digestive organ, and sensory organ. Additionally, in many metazoan animals these functions occur in …

Micrornas In Als: Defining Cell-Type Specific Expression, Developing Methods To Modulate Micrornas In Vivo, And Identifying Novel Therapeutic Targets, Erica Danielle Koval

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset, fatal neuromuscular disease with no adequate therapies. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are dysregulated in a variety of disease states, suggesting that this newly discovered class of gene expression repressors may be viable therapeutic targets. A microarray of miRNA changes in ALS model SOD1G93A rodents identified 12 miRNAs as significantly changed. Six miRNAs tested in human ALS tissues were confirmed increased. Specifically, miR-155 was increased 5-fold in mice and 2-fold in human spinal cords. Generation of mice that express a GFP-tagged miRNA processing protein behind cell-type specific promoters allowed for the identification of miRNA expression patterns …
