Effects Of Spreadsheet Towards Learners’ Usage Of Mathematical Language, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri
Effects Of Spreadsheet Towards Learners’ Usage Of Mathematical Language, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Language has been an essential element in mathematics education as it is a tool used between individuals to convey the information of mathematical concepts. Some researchers discovered that inconducive language usage impedes mathematics learning. This papers reports on the effect of spreadsheet to the language used by a group of 32 pre-university students in defining “limits”. The data revealed that (i) spreadsheet changes learners’ commandment of language in three aspects which are usage of examples, types of expressions, and accuracy of terminology; (ii) spreadsheet does change learner’ choice expression while learning mathematics regardless their academic ability; and (iii) through spreadsheet …

Enhancing Collaborative Learning In Flipped Classroom, S.H. Halili, R. Abdul Razak, Z. Zainuddin
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
With the advent of technology Web 2.0, two ways communication can be established among the learners in teaching and learning activities. The learners can study collaboratively with others even in different location and different time. Flipped classroom is the opposite of traditional learning where the learners watch lectures video outside the classroom and conduct interactive discussion in the classroom. After reviewing several articles, it shows that the application of flipped classroom can enhance a collaborative learning for students' learning activities. However, some challenges might potentially happened such as not all learners wish to work together, not all of them have …

Shortage Of Organ Donation Resulting From Difficulties In The Diagnosis Of Brain Death By Medical Practitioners In Malaysia, N.A. Mhd Khotib, N.N. Abdul Rahman, S.M.S. Shaikh Mohd Salleh
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The issues of brain death and organ donation are closely related. Brain death is the irreversible loss of brain function, and from the medical perspective, a person who is brain dead cannot be recovered. The shortage of organs for transplantation is a worldwide problem. One of the reasons contributing to the shortage of organs is the refusal of medical practitioners to diagnose brain death. This paper will highlight four factors why medical practitioners in Malaysia may refuse to diagnose brain death. These factors include: 1) medical practitioners may not accept brain death as true death, 2) a misconception of the …

Inhibiting Patent Trolling: A New Approach For Applying Rule 11, Eric Rogers, Young Jeon
Inhibiting Patent Trolling: A New Approach For Applying Rule 11, Eric Rogers, Young Jeon
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
There has been an alarming rise in the number of litigious entities—commonly referred to as patent trolls or non-practicing entities—that make no products but file dubious patent infringement lawsuits merely to extract money from commercially productive companies. High litigation costs provide a fertile environment for an exploitive business model that uses shotgun tactics to threaten patent infringement claims against numerous companies, many of which will make a purely financial decision to pay patent trolls rather than expend even more money in litigation. Sometimes the payoff is a settlement strategically set below the likely cost of litigation defense. Other times, the …

Adverse remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) leading to heart failure is driven by an imbalanced resolution of inflammation. The macrophage cell is an important control of post-MI inflammation, as macrophage subtypes secrete mediators to either promote inflammation and extend injury (M1 phenotype) or suppress inflammation and promote scar formation (M2 phenotype). We have previously shown that the absence of caveolin-1 (Cav1), a membrane scaffolding protein, is associated with adverse cardiac remodeling in mice, but the mechanisms responsible remain to be elucidated. We explore here the role of Cav1 in the activation of macrophages using wild type C57BL6/J (WT) and Cav1tm1Mls/J …
Neural Stem Cells As A Model To Study Huntington’S Disease, Rawan Bakhsh
Neural Stem Cells As A Model To Study Huntington’S Disease, Rawan Bakhsh
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a heritable neurodegenerative disorder that affects muscle coordination and diminishes cognitive abilities, by affecting the medium spiny neurons in the brain. In HD patients, neurons are damaged and destroyed because of the toxicity of the mutant Huntington protein (mHtt). The mechanism of how mHtt protein affects the neurons is unknown. In this study we explored the effects of mHtt expression by looking at changes in huntingtin localization, changes in the expression and co-localization of related proteins and differences in cell morphology. We examine how this expression affects the cytoskeletal structures using neural stem cells Q7 (wild …

Mathematics Graduate Theses
This research paper will provide a brief overview of what a “flipped classroom” is and the variations of it. It will address whether a flipped classroom is a possible way of addressing students of all learning styles and if all learning styles are motivated in a flipped classroom. The VARK learning style inventory will be given to all students in four College Algebra Prep classes. Two classes will be the flipped “inverted” style of classroom and the other two will be the traditional (control) style of classroom. All students in both formats will also be given a periodic survey to …

Not Another Cuba: Lyndon Johnson And The Dominican Republic, 1956-66, Andrew T. Murphree
Senior Honors Theses
This Honors Thesis will examine President Lyndon Johnson's foreign policy surrounding America's complex diplomatic relationship with the Dominican Republic throughout the 1960s. Regarded throughout the last few decades as a less dramatic or telegenic study, the Johnson administration's involvement in the Dominican Republic has been largely overlooked and forgotten. In the wake of an emerging third generation of scholarship, historians are now beginning to uncover the intricate entanglement of information and circumstances supporting Johnson's role in establishing the parameters of U.S. Policy.
At the heart of this discussion exists a robust argument currently taking place among scholars who debate the …

The Nature And Origin Of Pebble Dikes And Associated Alteration: Tintic Mining District (Ag-Pb-Zn), Utah, Douglas M. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
In many ore deposits throughout the world, brecciation often accompanies or occurs in association with mineralization (Sillitoe, 1985). Such is the case in the Tintic Mining District (Ag-Pb-Zn) of north-central Utah, where unique breccia features called pebble dikes occur alongside significant mineralization. Pebble dikes are tabular bodies of breccia, which consist of angular to rounded clasts of quartzite, shale, carbonate, and minor igneous rock cemented in a fine-grained clastic matrix. All clasts now lie above or adjacent to corresponding source rocks. Dikes are thin, typically less than 0.3 m wide to as much as 1 m, and can exceed 100 …

Anthony Lewis: What He Learned At Harvard Law School, Lincoln Caplan
Missouri Law Review
Anthony Lewis was a columnist for The New York Times for the unusually long tenure of thirty-two years. When he retired in 2001 at the age of seventy-four, Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Citizens Medal for setting “the highest standard of journalistic ethics and excellence” and for being “a clear and courageous voice for democracy and justice.” Lewis ended his last column by paraphrasing one of his heroes: “The most important office in a democracy, Justice Louis Brandeis said, is the office of citizen.” Lewis’ point was that the American commitment to the rule of law and the belief …
