Politics And Aesthetics: Partitions And Partioning In Contemporary Art, Jonathan Owen Clark, Joao Lima Duque
Politics And Aesthetics: Partitions And Partioning In Contemporary Art, Jonathan Owen Clark, Joao Lima Duque
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Jacques Rancière defined the “distribution of the sensible” as the effect of a type of aesthetico-political decision-making that creates a partitioning of the realm of the perceivable in relation to both art and society. The artworld itself constructs its own particular types of curatorial partitioning: between “art” and “non-art,” between “dominant, residual, and emergent,” and between “mainstream” and “periphery.” This essay examines certain “boundary effects” that develop as a result of the act of the partitioning itself and closely examines what arguably are two new categories in contemporary art: “crossover” and “interventionist.” Both categories have a certain relationship to a …

Culture And Nongovernmental Organizations Performance, Ondo State, Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Non-government organizations (NGOs) became strong forces in global affairs at the local, national, and international level, with the emergence of the United Nations Organization (UNO) in 1945. Many of these NGOs have failed to attain their goals, and research efforts have attributed their failure to socioeconomic and political factors. The situation is worse in developing countries, where there has been an alarming proliferation of NGOs since the 1980s. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the performance of community-based NGOs in Nigeria in relation to the cultural values of the people. The theoretical frameworks for the study were …
Sexism, Statements, And Audits, Eric Schniter, Timothy W. Shields
Sexism, Statements, And Audits, Eric Schniter, Timothy W. Shields
ESI Working Papers
Gender stereotypes and gender-discriminant behaviors have been shown to have strong and undesirable organizational, managerial, and economic effects. We examine the relationship between sexism and accounting practices, and the effect of contextual feedback using laboratory experiments. Sexist stereotypes and contextual feedback may affect the likelihood of financial misstatements and audits when auditors and issuers are of known gender. To investigate these aspects of sexism at zero acquaintance and after contextual feedback, we presented males and females with incentivized belief elicitation tasks about anticipated interaction behaviors and then a series of strategic-communication game decisions in same, other, and unknown gender interactions. …
Divided Loyalists Or Conditional Cooperators? Creating Consensus About Cooperation In Multiple Simultaneous Social Dilemmas, Matthew W. Mccarter, Anya C. Samak, Roman M. Sheremeta
Divided Loyalists Or Conditional Cooperators? Creating Consensus About Cooperation In Multiple Simultaneous Social Dilemmas, Matthew W. Mccarter, Anya C. Samak, Roman M. Sheremeta
ESI Working Papers
The current social dilemma literature lacks theoretical consensus regarding how individuals behave when facing multiple simultaneous social dilemmas. The divided-loyalty hypothesis, from organizational theory, predicts that cooperation will decline as individuals experience multiple social dilemmas with different compared to the same group members. The conditional-cooperation hypothesis, from behavioral economics, predicts that cooperation will increase as individuals experience multiple social dilemmas with different compared to the same group members. We employ a laboratory experiment to create consensus between these literatures and find support for the conditional-cooperation hypothesis. The positive effect of interacting with different group members comes from participants having an …
The New Hampshire Effect: Behavior In Sequential And Simultaneous Election Contests, Zeynep B. Irfanoglu, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta
The New Hampshire Effect: Behavior In Sequential And Simultaneous Election Contests, Zeynep B. Irfanoglu, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta
ESI Working Papers
This experimental study compares sequential and simultaneous election contests. Consistent with the theory, we find evidence of the “New Hampshire effect” in the sequential contests, i.e., the winner of the first electoral battle wins the overall contest with much higher probability than the loser of the first battle. However, contrary to the theory, sequential contests generate higher expenditure than the simultaneous contests. This is mainly because in the sequential contests losers of the first battle do not decrease their expenditure in the second battle while winners of the first battle increase (instead of decreasing) their expenditure in the second battle. …
Self Discrimination: A Field Experiment On Obesity, Antonios Proestakis, Pablo Brañas-Garza, Praveen Kujal
Self Discrimination: A Field Experiment On Obesity, Antonios Proestakis, Pablo Brañas-Garza, Praveen Kujal
ESI Working Papers
Empirical evidence suggests that physical characteristics such as obesity can result in a salary gap in the work place. It is, however, not clear how much of this (gap) is due to factors emanating from the demand or supply side of the market. In this paper we use a eld experiment to study whether a part of this wage gap can be attributed to personality traits of individuals on the supply side. Monitors randomly select individuals to respond to a questionnaire. Individuals can make money requests for completing the questionnaire. In the questionnaire they also self-report several personality chracteristics. We …
When Identifying Contributors Is Costly: An Experiment On Public Goods, Anya Savikhin Samek, Roman M. Sheremeta
When Identifying Contributors Is Costly: An Experiment On Public Goods, Anya Savikhin Samek, Roman M. Sheremeta
ESI Working Papers
Studies show that identifying contributors significantly increases contributions to public goods. In practice, however, viewing identifiable information is costly, which may discourage people from accessing such information. To address this question, we design a public goods experiment in which participants can pay a fee to view information about identities and corresponding contributions of their group members. We then compare this to a treatment in which there is no identifiable information, and a treatment in which all contributors are freely identified. Our main findings are that: (1) contributions in the treatment with costly information are as high as those in the …

Characterization Of The Disulfide In The Ectodomain Of Anthrax Toxin Receptor 2, Pedro Raymundo Jacquez
Characterization Of The Disulfide In The Ectodomain Of Anthrax Toxin Receptor 2, Pedro Raymundo Jacquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Anthrax toxin receptors act as molecular clamps or switches that control anthrax toxin entry, pH-dependent pore formation, and translocation of enzymatic moieties across the endosomal membranes. The ectodomain of anthrax toxin receptor 2 (ANTXR2) is composed of a von Willebrand factor A (VWA) domain that binds to anthrax toxin protective antigen (PA) and a newly defined immunoglobulin-like (Ig) domain, in which the disulfide bonds are required for PA pore formation and for the folding of ANTXR2. While the VWA domain has been well characterized, the structure and function of the whole ectodomain (VWA-Ig) are poorly defined, this is mainly due …
Digital Biliteracy: Digital Technologies As Homes For Arab Immigrant Children's Biliteracy Development, Laila Al-Salmi
Digital Biliteracy: Digital Technologies As Homes For Arab Immigrant Children's Biliteracy Development, Laila Al-Salmi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The revolution of digital technologies and children's increasing access to them is
impacting the literacy development of children around the world. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between digital technologies and immigrant children's biliteracy development. The purpose of this study was to understand the digital literacy practices of Arab pre-kindergarten children and how these shape biliteracy development in Arabic and English. Tomake sense of the emergent biliteracy of these young participants, the study proposed Digital Biliteracy, a theoretical framework that draws on elements of New Literacy Studies, MultimodalLiteracies, Digital Literacies and Situated Learning Theory.
The study employed a qualitative …
Biochemical Characterization Of Four Distinct Proteins, Gustavo A. Avila
Biochemical Characterization Of Four Distinct Proteins, Gustavo A. Avila
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Proteins are ubiquitous in all living organisms, executing the majority of cellular functions in distinct ways. Understanding a protein's role necessitates investigating its structure and function, which are closely related. My research couples these two aspects by delving into the biochemical and structural characterization of proteins in four distinct systems, all playing central roles in numerous significant disease progressions. These four original research endeavors were all targeted for structural studies with a unifying relationship to establish our new structural biochemistry lab. These four systems are: (1) Gam1, an early adenovirus protein globally inhibiting host SUMOylation; (2) Anthrax toxin complexed with …
Psychographic Characteristics And Health Behaviors In Young Adults, Jose Alonso Cabriales
Psychographic Characteristics And Health Behaviors In Young Adults, Jose Alonso Cabriales
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Non trivial smoking rates are observed among young adults and Hispanics, particularly as light and intermittent smoking is on the rise. Additionally, the assessment of other health behaviors including alcohol use, physical activity, and dietary practices seems warranted in young adults. The primary aim of this study was to identify clusters of individuals based on psychographics (e.g., lifestyle, preferences, personality characteristics), and their relation to tobacco use within a primarily Hispanic young adult border sample. Secondary aims were the assessment of group differences with respect to alcohol use, …
Through The Eyes Of The Dead Others, Isaac Aaron Ceniceros
Through The Eyes Of The Dead Others, Isaac Aaron Ceniceros
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
I use Edith Wyschogrod's figure of the heterological historian to argue that we have a responsibility to learn from the "dead others" of the past in order to better apply in practical ways the lessons we learn from history. I draw on an interpretation of Nietzsche's view on historiography, to examine the claims of Hegel's dialectic, namely, that the Ideal Absolute for which Spirit pines, is actually achievable, particularly through the advent of the Internet. Beginning with a relatively well-known interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of history, Fukuyama's, I show how Hegel's dialectic takes shape in Fukuyama's interpretation as a negative …
Effects Of Electrical Pulse Stimulation On In Vitro Measurement Of Mitochondrial Content And Lipid In Human Myotubes, Daniel Alberto Conde
Effects Of Electrical Pulse Stimulation On In Vitro Measurement Of Mitochondrial Content And Lipid In Human Myotubes, Daniel Alberto Conde
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
It has been previously shown that human myotubes retain certain in vivo characteristics of the donors. Furthermore, we have shown that Electrical pulse stimulation (EPS), an in vitro exercise mimetic, increases mitochondrial and lipid content in cultured human myotubes after 24 hr. of stimulation. Purpose: We aimed to examine the EPS induced adaptations to lipid, mitochondrial, and Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) content using human myotubes. Methods: EPS was applied to myotubes for 60 min (bipolar pulses of 100 Hz, 30V, every 5 seconds), 24 hr. or 48 hr. (single bipolar pulses of 1 Hz for 2 ms; 30V) and were …
Spingolipid Metabolism In A Reptillian Protozoan, Entamoeba Invadens, Duran Dogan Debons
Spingolipid Metabolism In A Reptillian Protozoan, Entamoeba Invadens, Duran Dogan Debons
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Entamoeba invadens (hereinafter E. invadens) is an anaerobic parasitic protozoan that can be found in water and soil. Although the host organisms for this parasite are snakes, lizards, and other reptile species, the parasite is morphologically identical to Entamoeba histolytica, a causative agent of human amebiasis. Entamoeba inavdens exists in two morphological forms--(1) a replicative trophozoite, and (2) a relatively dormant cyst. While the transformation of cyst to trophozoites (called "excystation") takes place in the stomach, the differentiation of trophozoites to cyst (known as "encystation"), occurs in the small intestine. Unlike the cyst, a trophozoite is unable to survive …

Global Sphingolipid Profile Of Giardia Lamblia During Stage Differentiation: The Influence Of Sphingomyelin Abundance On Viable Cyst Production, Trevor Thomas Duarte
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Giardia lamblia is a protozoan parasite and a major cause of the waterborne-illness, giardiasis, worldwide. Giardiasis is endemic in developing countries and is a leading cause of non-viral- and non-bacterial-associated intestinal disorders. Acute symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, cramps, and malabsorption. The disease is often self-limiting, although the infection can result in long-term disorders such as chronic fatigue, stunted cognitive skills, and failure to thrive even after the parasite has been cleared.
This parasite exists in two morphologic forms--infective trophozoites and transmissible, water-resistant cyst, which is passed by the fecal-oral route and is likely to be spread by contaminated drinking …
Optimized Integrated Software Package For Classification Of Small Airway Dysfunction Using Genetic Algorithms, Elias Estrada
Optimized Integrated Software Package For Classification Of Small Airway Dysfunction Using Genetic Algorithms, Elias Estrada
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Due to the similarity in the symptoms of respiratory disorders, an accurate diagnosis could be a difficult task. Regarding asthma as the main focus of this research, early detection of small airway impairment could represent a better opportunity for timely diagnosis. An integrated software package (ISP) based on the impulse oscillometry technique, has been developed to serve as an important tool for clinicians during classification of asthma severities on children [1]. The current version of the ISP was tested with data obtained during several years by Dr. Homer Nazeran and Dr. Michael Goldman from 110 Hispanic children [2], providing an …

3d Printed Spatially Variant Metamaterials, Cesar Roman Garcia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The recent advancement in 3D printing has created a new way to design electronics and electromagnetic devices. This allows for a new breed of non-planar designs to be used, fully exploiting all three dimensions like never before. More functions can be fit into the same amount of space, products with novel form factors can be more easily manufactured, interconnects can be routed more smoothly, interfaces can be better implemented, electrical and mechanical functions can be comingled, and entirely new device paradigms will be invented. When departing from traditional planar topologies many new problems arise like signal integrity, crosstalk, noise, and …
Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady
Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In many engineering applications ranging from engineering seismology to petroleum engineering and civil engineering, processing seismic data plays a key role. In processing seismic data, it turns out to be very efficient to describe the signal's spectrum as a linear combination of Ricker wavelet spectra.
In this Thesis, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical efficiency. Specifically, signal propagation through several layers is discussed, and it is shown that the Ricker wavelet is the simplest non-trivial solution for the corresponding data processing problem, under the condition that the described properties of the approximation family are satisfied.

A Comparative Approach To Assessing The Functional And Structural Characteristics Of Human Fkbp52 In The Regulation Of Steroid Hormone Receptor Signaling Pathway, Diondra Crystal Harris
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The 52 kDa FK506 binding protein (h52) is a key positive regulator of Androgen Receptor (AR) in cellular and animal models and is an attractive target for the treatment of prostate cancer. Human FKBP52 is a known regulatory protein and co-chaperone that has been shown to play an important role in the regulation of the AR signaling pathway, and in the development of the male sexual phenotype. Cellular studies in mammalian and yeast cells reveal that FKBP52 is a positive regulator of AR, glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and progesterone receptor (PR), potentiating receptor-mediated gene expression up to 60-fold in some systems. …
