This paper evaluates the first 15 months of the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Sensor Data Record (SDR) acquired by the nadir sensors and processed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Interface Data Processing Segment. The evaluation consists of an inter-comparison with a similar satellite instrument, an analysis using a radiative transfer model, and an assessment of product stability. This is in addition to the evaluation of sensor calibration and the Environment Data Record product that are also reported in this Special Issue. All these are parts of synergetic effort to provide comprehensive assessment at every level of …

The latest push to encourage workforce growth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines has generated varying results. Overall, demand for STEM graduates is outpacing the numbers available. This has motivated a wide range of proposed solutions to increase the number of people trained to work in these fields. While a focus on college recruitment in these areas is a necessity for increasing numbers of STEM graduates, the expanding variety of students admitted to university programs in STEM disciplines creates a new series of issues in higher education. Most prominently, retention and graduation rates are low in STEM disciplines. …

This study assesses the impact of changing narratives on public opinion toward the Palestine-Israel conflict. In contrast to other U.S.-Israel relations studies, but in accordance with some media influence and public opinion research, this study emphasizes the potential role of American public opinion in shaping U.S.-Israel relations. Furthermore, this study attempts to attribute the pro-Israel American attitude shown in Gallup polls to the lack of information about the Palestine-Israel conflict in American mainstream media. This study tests whether public opinion will shift after being exposed to different narratives that falls under one of three major perceptions reported in the current …

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been utilized in human studies to modulate a multitude of psychological, cognitive, and psychiatric disorders. There have been positive behavioral results in human subjects but our knowledge of biological processes occurring during stimulation to elicit behavioral outcomes is limited. Our study utilizes a rodent tDCS (R-tDCS) model in which Sprague Dawley rats receive tDCS in order to examine whether tDCS affects neuronal activation. We examined two immediate early genes (IEG's), cFos and zif268, in order to discern if tDCS affects neuronal activation. Our findings indicate that tDCS does affect neuronal activation by means of …

In the new digital world connected by ICT the methods and availability of communication have not only transformed the way people interact, learn, and do business, it also has political implications. ICT, specifically Web2.0 social media, increase the reach of campaigns and assist in organizing and executing reform movements. The state of Bosnia-Herzegovina presents a unique test case as it is a post-conflict state moving toward democratic consolidation that emerged in 1995, when the World Wide Web was making inroads into daily life. The state is divided, politically and socially, into ethnic cleavages. ICT in BiH has not been a …

The abolition of British slavery in the 19th century raises the question of how the British achieved antislavery against colonial opposition. While historical theories have focused on economic, political and religious factors, no account of abolition is complete without a thorough investigation of the history of evolving British legal traditions. This thesis analyzed a number of British homeland court cases and antislavery laws. English legal traditions established principles of freedom long before abolition in Britain, and then upheld them in respect to blacks on British soil in the 18th century. On the other hand, these traditions exposed a void in …

The HIV protein Rev regulates the expression of essential viral proteins during the course of infection by a mechanism that is well understood. It promotes nuclear export of viral transcripts, normally retained in the nucleus owing to the presence of introns, by interacting with host cell transport factors. However, over-expression of Rev in cells leads to defects in cell cycle progression, specifically slowing growth and impairing progression through mitosis (43). While it is possible that Rev may be altering the proteins in transport pathways, cell cycle defects may be attributed to Rev's interactions with other proteins.

As the United States moved closer to ending its military involvement in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, intense debate on the relevance and success of the United States' counterinsurgency (COIN) strategy in the country continues. Many observers have been quick to declare the strategy a failure without fully analyzing the critical components of COIN doctrine that are necessary for a campaign to succeed, and the extent to which those components were in place in Afghanistan. This study examines the case of Afghanistan by determining whether the U.S.'s counterinsurgency strategy was successful in achieving the four main objectives identified by …

Mining Privacy Settings To Find Optimal Privacy-Utility Tradeoffs For Social Network Services, Shumin Guo
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Privacy has been a big concern for users of social network services (SNS). On recent criticism about privacy protection, most SNS now provide fine privacy controls, allowing users to set visibility levels for almost every profile item. However, this also creates a number of difficulties for users. First, SNS providers often set most items by default to the highest visibility to improve the utility of social network, which may conflict with users' intention. It is often formidable for a user to fine-tune tens of privacy settings towards the user desired settings. Second, tuning privacy settings involves an intricate tradeoff between …

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has reached epidemic proportions affecting more than 20 million adults in the US. CKD is routinely diagnosed and defined as reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), increased urinary albumin creatinine ratio (UACR) or both. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity share a major part in causing CKD. Angiotensin (1-7) (Ang (1-7)) is a vasodilator that plays an important renoprotective role in the renin angiotensin system, counteracting the vasoconstrictor and proliferative effects of Ang II. ACE2 and NEP which form Ang (1-7) by degrading Ang II and Ang I, respectively. A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase (ADAM) 17, which is responsible for …

Sexual Harassment And Feeding Inhibition Between Two Invasive Dengue Vectors, John Soghigian, Kathryn Gibbs, Ashleigh Stanton, Rachel Kaiser, Todd Livdahl
Biology
Two invasive mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, have been interacting during the course of a rapid range expansion by A. albopictus. We investigated the potential for interspecific feeding interference by male mosquitoes interacting with females within and between these species. A. aegypti feeding on both sugar and blood was suppressed when females of this species were exposed to A. albopictus males, but no change was observed when exposed to conspecifics. A. albopictus feeding was not affected by males of either species. The potential consequences of these behaviors are discussed within the context of other known interspecific effects, all of …

A Critical Race Theorist Account Of Corporate Racial Standing., Jonathan Bailyn
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Without guidance from the Supreme Court, federal circuits have been left to develop a patchwork of theories of corporate standing for racial discrimination. This patchwork of theories has ultimately resulted in an unstable doctrine, as each court applies a different theory of corporate and racial identity and, from a different premise, reach a different conclusion. To stabilize the doctrine of corporate racialization and resolving conflicting circuit outcomes, the Supreme Court should step in and determine when a corporation has standing to sue for racial discrimination. To properly respond to both the epistemological conundrum of race and the ontological conundrum of …

Investigation Of Fault-Related Small-Scale Fluid Flow In Geothermal Fields By Numerical Modeling, Doğa Doğan
Investigation Of Fault-Related Small-Scale Fluid Flow In Geothermal Fields By Numerical Modeling, Doğa Doğan
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In this paper, hydrothermal circulations and temperature distributions in geothermal areas with fault zones are investigated. It is shown that existence of the fault zones influences both the fluid circulation patterns and velocities. Reciprocal influence of the local fluid circulations and the temperature distribution is demonstrated. A 2-dimensional square porous layer is used for modeling the geothermal field. Faults are modeled as vertical porous layers. It is assumed that faults are located inside the geothermal field and have a higher permeability than the field itself. Anisotropic and isotropic models are used to simulate the permeability structure of the faults. Several …

A Metamaterial-Based Multiband Phase Shifter, Michael Maassel
Electrical and Computer Engineering
A design methodology for a multi-band phase shifter using a metamaterial-based transmission line was developed. This method is different in that the loaded-line phase shifter has a phase shift of 90 degrees at the center frequencies of both bands instead of -90 degrees and -270 degrees. The method was validated using simulation and measured results.
Perceptions Of Leaders, Teachers, Students And Parents In High Performing West Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Within The Context Of Tertiary Entrance Examinations, Michael O'Neill
Theses
As for most of the developed world, Australia is no different in its scrupulous evaluation of school performance data. Annually much attention is given to data surrounding the performance of students, teachers and schools in high stakes Tertiary Entrance Examinations as students seek to qualify for a variety of university programs. So called ‘league tables’ are produced measuring school performance on a number of criteria which differ marginally from state to state. Such tables identify both successful and less successful schools. Notwithstanding the limitations of such comparisons and the fact that success is a relative term there is a great …

Trafficking In Human Beings: Partial Compliance Theory, Enforcement Failure, And Obligations To Victims, Leslie P. Francis, John G. Francis
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Trafficking—the coerced exploitation of people—is a major global concern. Primary forms of trafficking include sex trafficking, labor trafficking, trafficking in organs, trafficking in reproduction, and trafficking in child soldiers. This paper explores whether “host” countries — destinations for trafficking — have special obligations to provide trafficked persons with support needed to escape trafficking and to deal with the damage it has caused. This support includes asylum, healthcare, food, and shelter, at least for an initial period of time.

To Be Male: Homophobia, Sexism, And The Production Of “Masculine” Boys, Clifford Rosky
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
This chapter is about the relationship between homophobia and sexism in family law. By conducting an empirical analysis of custody and visitation cases, it shows that stereotypes about the children of lesbian and gay parents are both sexist and homophobic. In some cases, the relationship between homophobia and sexism becomes especially obvious, when stereotypes explicitly conflate the sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender roles of children and parents. By looking more closely, however, we can find more subtle evidence of this relationship in a much wider range of cases, wherever stereotypes of the children of lesbian and gay parents appear. …

Development Of Operational Strategies To Minimize Bromate Formation In The Moorhead Water Treatment Plant, Kevin Bradley Young
Civil and Environmental Engineering
A recent study at the Moorhead water treatment plant (MWTP) determined that bromate formed during ozone disinfection and, at times, exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb) in the summer months. Operational data showed that bromate formation was directly related to raw water bromide concentration and control of the ozone system. This study was conducted with the purpose of developing and implementing operational strategies to minimize bromate formation in the MWTP. Several operational changes, including selection of source water based on bromide concentration and controlling ozone addition in a manner that reduces the ozone dose …
Revolution Imagined: Cause Advocacy, Consumer Rights, And The Evolving Role Of Ngos In Thailand, Frank W. Munger
Revolution Imagined: Cause Advocacy, Consumer Rights, And The Evolving Role Of Ngos In Thailand, Frank W. Munger
Articles & Chapters
This article describes the founding and evolution of a “Thai-style” NGO dedicated to consumer protection. Through a description of the NGO and the career of its founder, the article brings to light features of the evolution of NGO based advocacy in Thailand from the student uprising in 1973 to the present. The legacy of the 1973 October Generation of activists continues to influence development of NGOs but new emphasis on rights has emerged since the era of constitutional reform in the 1990s. Many NGOs now make use of litigation to attempt to achieve social change, but litigation, like other long-standing …
The Associations Between Student Perceptions Of The Classroom Psycho-Social Learning Environment And Motivation To Learn Chinese, Chongmin Ji
Education
The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between students’ perception of their classroom psychosocial learning environment and motivation to learn Mandarin Chinese, which can support teachers in creating a good classroom environment. The students took two surveys (Likert scale and open-ended questions) that measured their perception of the classroom environment and the learning motivation. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, percentage) and inferential statistics (simple correlation, multiple regression, and two sample t-test) were used to analyze the quantitative data. The open-ended questions were coded and categorized based on the student responses. There were statistically significant associations between student …
Decolonizing Instructional Design Through Auto/Ethnography, Carolyn Marie Delorme
Decolonizing Instructional Design Through Auto/Ethnography, Carolyn Marie Delorme
Education
Instructional design is the systematic process of planning and developing learning environments. In contemporary educational contexts, this has come to include also the intentional integration of digital and Internet technologies. Instructional design practitioners are trained to employ formal theoretical process models to guide their practices, roughly analogous to the ways in which a quilt maker may utilize a pattern and systematic process to guide making a quilt. There are few developed models of instructional design to be found in the literature that adequately attend to cultural orientation and none have been developed from within non-dominant cultural Indigenous education contexts. Furthermore, …
