On Women And Running: A Feminist Rhetorical Investigation Into The Political And Ontological Implications Of Consciousness-Raising Via The Sharing Of Women's Running Stories, Janelle Leann Briggs Dec 2014

On Women And Running: A Feminist Rhetorical Investigation Into The Political And Ontological Implications Of Consciousness-Raising Via The Sharing Of Women's Running Stories, Janelle Leann Briggs

Dissertations

The goal of my dissertation is to further our understanding of the political ramifications of women's running stories by focusing on the intersections of feminist rhetoric, women in sports studies, political theory, and ontology. To this end, I examined six books written by women, about women, who participate in the sport of running. Since I am most interested in how gendered concepts teach us how to be "appropriate," and due to the fact that what is considered appropriate gendered behavior changes over time, I start from a place of understanding that "appropriateness" is necessarily both hegemonic and unstable. As a …

"I Don't Want To Hurt Anyone's Feelings": Using Race As A Writing Prompt In First Year Writing, Dianna Shank Dec 2014

"I Don't Want To Hurt Anyone's Feelings": Using Race As A Writing Prompt In First Year Writing, Dianna Shank

Dissertations

First Year Composition (FYC) is one of the most important courses for any incoming college student. This course (often designated as English 101) provides students the rhetorical tools to fully engage in critical thinking and writing on the college level. One of the most common methods of organizing FYC is to use a topic as the center of all the reading and writing prompts. The use of outside subject matter to teach FYC is a common practice that is rarely interrogated for its effectiveness. However, the Hairston debate in the early 1990s opened up a public discussion of how FYC …

Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto Dec 2014

Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto

Dissertations

The major focus of this dissertation is the ancestor worship that is inferred to have been practiced in the multiethnic Middle Sicán theocratic state (AD 950-1100) that prospered on the northern North Coast of Peru. The major objective is twofold: (1) demonstrating by archaeological means that ancestors were indeed worshipped in the Middle Sicán society and (2) elucidating the nature and role of the inferred ancestor cult and associated rituals and ceremonies. Ancestor (and the veneration of it) is one of the themes that have the deepest roots in the anthropological thoughts; nevertheless, many archaeologists have uncritically invoked ancestor veneration …

Mega: An Energy Aware Algorithm For Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks In Sustainable Smart Infrastructure, Dong Qi, Yu Chen, Shahrzad Towfighian Dec 2014

Mega: An Energy Aware Algorithm For Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks In Sustainable Smart Infrastructure, Dong Qi, Yu Chen, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Smart infrastructure is attractive for possessing many desirable features, such as uninterrupted monitoring of health conditions, timely response to damages, and human-infrastructure interactions. Embedded sensors that collectinformation are critical for decision making. However, the lifetime of electronic sensors is a constraint to infrastructure lifetime if sensors are physically embedded in the infrastructure at construction time. In this paper, we studied a self-powered wireless sensor network that harvests energy from mechan-ical vibration in the environment. A dynamic, hierarchical algorithm called MEGA is proposed that constructs clusters and elects the cluster head based on residue energy and energy harvest rate. Taking a …

Lkb1 Deficient Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells Are Vulnerable To Energy Stress Induced By Atp Depletion, Chao Yang Dec 2014

Lkb1 Deficient Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells Are Vulnerable To Energy Stress Induced By Atp Depletion, Chao Yang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Lung cancer is the second most frequent cancer in United States, which represents about 13.5% of new cancer cases every year. It accounts for about 27.2% of all cancer related deaths, which is more than the sum of deaths caused by prancretic, breast and colorectal. On average, only about 16% of lung cancer patients survive beyond 5 years. LKB1 is the third most mutated gene in lung cancer. It has been shown that LKB1 is mutated in at least 15% to 30% of NSCLC. Tumor with LKB1 mutation is associated with poor differentiation, high metastasis and worse response to chemotherapy. …

The Role Of Mir-34a In Inhibition Of Prostate Tumor Growth In The Bone And Induction Of Autophagy, Sanchaika Gaur Dec 2014

The Role Of Mir-34a In Inhibition Of Prostate Tumor Growth In The Bone And Induction Of Autophagy, Sanchaika Gaur

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in the United States, with most deaths occurring from bone metastasis. Several new therapies have been FDA approved for bone-metastatic PCa, but patient survival has only marginally improved due to therapy resistance, which often arises from constitutive activation of compensatory signaling pathways. This dissertation work focused on a mechanistic understanding of how cross talk between tyrosine kinase receptors contributes to therapy resistance, and how this may be overcome by downregulating expression of these receptors. In PCa cell lines and xenograft models, I demonstrated that activation of IGF-1R …

Sox2-Dependent Transcriptional Control Of Airway Differentiation In The Mouse Lung, Belinda J. Hernandez Dec 2014

Sox2-Dependent Transcriptional Control Of Airway Differentiation In The Mouse Lung, Belinda J. Hernandez

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The lung is a highly branched tree-like tubular system that results from more than 20 generations of the conducting airways and consists of 300 million alveoli for gas exchange. Airway branches form via branching morphogenesis and then mature into conducting airways, in which the number and distribution of different cell types need to be precisely controlled. The conducting airways contain four lung cell types: club cells, ciliated cells, basal cells, and neuroendocrine cells.SOX2 is a well-known conducting airway marker. SOX2 is a transcription factor that is known to be important in embryonic development and induction of pluripotent stem cells. We …

Investigating Checkpoint Kinases 1/2 As Novel Therapeutic Targets In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Mayur Arvind Gadhikar Dec 2014

Investigating Checkpoint Kinases 1/2 As Novel Therapeutic Targets In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Mayur Arvind Gadhikar

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Cisplatin, despite being the cornerstone chemotherapy for the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), provides clinical benefits in just a subset of patients. This together with the lack of biomarkers predicting therapeutic responses, have led to unacceptably high rate of treatment failures in HNSCC. TP53 is the most frequently mutated gene in HNSCC, and the effect of p53 loss or mutation on cisplatin responses in HNSCC is poorly understood. In the current study, we hypothesized that HNSCC cells respond to cisplatin in a p53 dependent manner and unambiguously show that presence of wild-type TP53 (wtp53) confers sensitivity …

P120-Catenin Regulates Rest And Corest, And Modulates Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Moonsup Lee Dec 2014

P120-Catenin Regulates Rest And Corest, And Modulates Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Moonsup Lee

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The canonical-Wnt pathway and beta-catenin have been extensively studied to determine their contributions to stem cell biology, but less is known about p120-catenin in the nuclear compartment. P120 is developmentally required as a consequence of its biochemical and functional interactions with cadherins, small-GTPases and transcriptional regulators. We report here that p120-catenin binds to and negatively regulates REST and CoREST, that others have indicated form a repressive complex having diverse key roles in developmental and pathologic gene regulation. We thus provide the first evidence for a direct upstream modulator of REST/CoREST function. Using mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), mammalian cell lines, …

Hypoxia Mediated Downregulation Of Mirna Biogenesis Leads To Increased Tumor Progression, Rajesha Rupaimoole Dec 2014

Hypoxia Mediated Downregulation Of Mirna Biogenesis Leads To Increased Tumor Progression, Rajesha Rupaimoole

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of tumor associated microenvironment in the initiation and progression of tumors. However, a mechanistic understanding of the complicated biological interplay between the stromal framework and malignant regions of the tumor remains incompletely understood. In this study, we address mechanisms by which hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment leads to attenuation of miRNA biogenesis by downregulation of two key enzymes, Drosha and Dicer in cancer cells. Previous data from our laboratory had shown the clinical relevance of downregulated Dicer and Drosha in ovarian and other cancer types, but a clear …

Role Of Phosphorylation Of Focal Adhesion Kinase At Tyrosine 861 In Prostate Cancer Metastasis, Tanushree Chatterji Dec 2014

Role Of Phosphorylation Of Focal Adhesion Kinase At Tyrosine 861 In Prostate Cancer Metastasis, Tanushree Chatterji

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase that mediates interactions between the extracellular matrix and intracellular signaling pathways critical in promoting numerous cellular functions including adhesion, proliferation, survival and migration. Most FAK functions result from phosphorylation by Src family kinases, which trigger numerous signaling cascades. Overexpression of FAK is associated with metastasis in many solid tumors, including prostate cancer. Hence, understanding the mechanisms by which FAK is regulated in prostate cancer will better elucidate its role in prostate cancer metastasis. Work in this dissertation tested the hypothesis that altered phosphorylation of FAK is critical for cell migration and …

Sustained Adrenergic Signaling Promotes Cervical Cancer Progression, Nouara C. Sadaoui Dec 2014

Sustained Adrenergic Signaling Promotes Cervical Cancer Progression, Nouara C. Sadaoui

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background: Chronic stress and sustained adrenergic signaling are known to promote tumor progression. The underlying mechanisms behind this process are not well understood. We examined the effects of sustained adrenergic signaling on cervical cancer progression through increased expression of HPV oncogenes, E6 and E7.

Materials and Methods: ADRβ expression levels were examined in patient-derived cervical cancer samples. We used an orthotopic model of cervical cancer to investigate the effects of restraint stress on tumor growth and metastasis. We evaluated the in vivo effects of a β-blocker, propranolol, and HPV E6/E7 siRNA. In vitro, ADRβ positive cervical cancer cells were …

Quantitative Analysis And Imaging-Based Insights Into The Characteristics And Mechanisms Of Yeast Pattern Formation, Lin Chen Dec 2014

Quantitative Analysis And Imaging-Based Insights Into The Characteristics And Mechanisms Of Yeast Pattern Formation, Lin Chen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Biofilm formation is a common lifestyle adapted by bacteria and fungi in response to various environmental stresses. Bacterial and fungal biofilms adhering to medical devices convey resistance to antibiotics or biocides, causing high rates of clinical infections. Microorganisms are protected from harsh environmental conditions by reduced stress penetration through the complex biofilm architecture with distinct patterns. Although the molecular regulations of surface patterning have been well characterized in bacteria, the mechanisms underlying the complex pattern formation in eukaryotic biofilms remain unclear.

This dissertation aims to investigate the salient features of robust colony expansion in yeast biofilms and the processes driving …

Functions Of The Homeobox Gene Dlx4 In Controlling Inflammatory Signaling And Metastasis Of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer, Dhwani Haria Dec 2014

Functions Of The Homeobox Gene Dlx4 In Controlling Inflammatory Signaling And Metastasis Of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer, Dhwani Haria

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) accounts for the most number of deaths among women with gynecological malignancies in the United States. Approximately 80% of EOC patients are diagnosed with disease that has disseminated beyond the confines of the ovaries. The five year survival rate for patients with advanced stage EOC is less than 30% and the recurrence of chemoresistant disease is high. Identifying the mechanisms that control peritoneal metastasis of EOC is therefore critical for improving treatment of advanced stage disease. The homeobox gene DLX4 encodes a transcription factor that is absent from most normal adult tissues. Previous studies from our …

Differential Pax5 Levels Promote Mcl Dispersal And Progression And Predict A Poor Prognosis In Advanced Mcl Patients, Albert Teo Dec 2014

Differential Pax5 Levels Promote Mcl Dispersal And Progression And Predict A Poor Prognosis In Advanced Mcl Patients, Albert Teo

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Although PAX5 conditional silencing in mice models led to aggressive lymphoma formation, there has been a lack of understanding in the precise functions of PAX5 in human B cell cancers. PAX5 expression is used to diagnose different B cell lymphoma in the clinic including mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), which is one of the most aggressive B cell cancers. PAX5 levels in MCL patients were significantly repressed compared to normal B cells. Surprisingly, we found there were quantitative differences in PAX5 expression levels within MCL patient tissues, which prompted us to silence PAX5 in MCL cell lines to characterize PAX5 functions …

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Induces Fyn Expression Via Up-Regulation Of P47phox In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Blake P. Johnson Dec 2014

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Induces Fyn Expression Via Up-Regulation Of P47phox In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Blake P. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Src family kinases (SFKs) are commonly over-expressed and/or activated in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), where they serve as key mediators of GBM cell proliferation, survival, invasion and angiogenesis. Mechanisms of allosteric SFK activation are well described; however, the SFK Fyn is commonly up-regulated at the mRNA level in multiple human cancers, including GBM, where the mode of increased expression is poorly understood. Since activating mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are commonly occurring in GBM, we examined whether EGFR could induce Fyn expression. Here, we found that wild-type EGFR, and to a greater extent hyper-activating EGFR mutants, EGFRΔIII and …

Targeting Cox-2 And Rank In Aggressive Breast Cancers: Inflammatory Breast Cancer And Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Monica Elizabeth Reyes Dec 2014

Targeting Cox-2 And Rank In Aggressive Breast Cancers: Inflammatory Breast Cancer And Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Monica Elizabeth Reyes

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are two highly aggressive breast cancer subtypes associated with a poor outcome. Despite sensitivity to current treatment, these breast cancers subtypes have a high recurrence rate and proclivity to metastasize early. The aggressiveness of IBC and TNBC have been linked to CSCs and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), which are critical features of breast cancer progression and metastasis. The clinical challenge faced in the treatment of IBC and TNBC is finding a treatment strategy to target the cancer stem-like (CSC) population to block metastasis. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and receptor activator of nuclear …

Attachment, Vagal Tone, And Co-Regulation During Infancy, Jessica Chloe Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the development of attachment as it relates to co-regulation and vagal tone over the second half of the first year of life. Links to infants' attachment and developmental status were also examined. Symmetrical and unilateral co-regulated patterns of interactions at 6 months demonstrated significant linkages with attachment. Developmental status did not show direct linkages with attachment. Direct links between vagal tone and attachment were also not identified. Correlations between co-regulation and vagal tone at the 6 month time point were identified. Findings suggest an important role of co-regulation as it relates to attachment development. Future studies may …

Pro-Covering Fibrations Of The Hawaiian Earring, Nickolas Brenten Callor Dec 2014

Pro-Covering Fibrations Of The Hawaiian Earring, Nickolas Brenten Callor

Theses and Dissertations

Let H be the Hawaiian Earring, and let H denote its fundamental group. Assume (Bi) is an inverse system of bouquets of circles whose inverse limit is H. We give an explicit bijection between finite normal covering spaces of H and finite normal covering spaces of Bi. This bijection induces a correspondence between a certain family of inverse sequences of these covering spaces. The correspondence preserves the inverse limit of these sequences, thus offering two methods of constructing the same limit. Finally, we characterize all spaces that can be obtained in this fashion as a particular type of fibrations of …

The 1852 Banda Arc Mega-Thrust Earthquake And Tsunami In Indonesia, Tsz Man Fisher Dec 2014

The 1852 Banda Arc Mega-Thrust Earthquake And Tsunami In Indonesia, Tsz Man Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

In 1852, a five-minute long earthquake hit the Banda Arc region that was felt over most of Indonesia. It caused uplift of new islands and sent a tsunami across the Banda Sea that reached a height of 8 meters at Banda Neira and was also registered at Ambon, Saparua and other islands. Records of the 1852 earthquake at multiple locations provide the constraints needed to reconstruct the disastrous event through earthquake intensity analysis and numerical modeling of the tsunami. Using tsunami heights and arrival times as the major constraints, best fit numerical models of the tsunami were constructed using Clawpack. …

Small Mammals Matter? Linking Plant Invasion, Biotic Resistance, And Climate Change In Post-Fire Plant Communities, Rory Charles O'Connor Dec 2014

Small Mammals Matter? Linking Plant Invasion, Biotic Resistance, And Climate Change In Post-Fire Plant Communities, Rory Charles O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction and establishment of exotic species can profoundly alter ecosystems. Two exotic species drastically changing the landscape of deserts in western North America are Bromus tectorum L. and Bromus rubens L. Through the buildup of biomass and slow decomposition rates in deserts these two exotic annual grasses can alter fire regimes that change the plant and animal community dynamics in the ecosystems. To better understand the ecological mechanisms that could restrict or alter the patterns of invasive plant establishment we established a replicated full factorial experiment in the Great Basin and Mojave Desert. The combinations of factors being manipulated …

The Case For Ehearsay, Jeffrey Bellin Dec 2014

The Case For Ehearsay, Jeffrey Bellin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

On April 4, 2014, the Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Evidence convened the Symposium on the Challenges of Electronic Evidence. The purpose of the symposium was "to consider the intersection of the evidence rules and emerging technologies" and explore what rule changes, if any, might be warranted in light of sweeping changes in the way people communicate.1 As an unapologetic advocate for changes to the hearsay rules, I thought it a happy coincidence that the symposium coincided with Seventh Circuit Judge Richard Posner's call for sweeping hearsay reform. In a 2013 article, eHearsay, I proposed a hearsay exception …

Development Of A Translational, Tissue-Engineered Approach To Replacement Of Myocardial Infarct Scar Tissue, Jason Schulte Dec 2014

Development Of A Translational, Tissue-Engineered Approach To Replacement Of Myocardial Infarct Scar Tissue, Jason Schulte

All Dissertations

Myocardial infarction (MI) affects nearly 600,000 individuals each year, and the resulting damage initiates a pathophysiological progression towards congestive heart failure (CHF). A shortage of donor organs precludes heart transplantation as a practical solution, and neither surgical intervention nor stem cell therapy have yielded consistent and sufficiently positive results in clinical investigation. To prevent CHF, prospective therapies must target the cause of the maladaptive cardiac remodeling which precedes it--the nonfunctional, dyskinetic infarct scar--and aim to replace it with functional cardiac muscle. Tissue engineering holds promise for the development of novel therapies to either halt or reverse post-MI cardiac remodeling. However, …

Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz Dec 2014

Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz

All Dissertations

Research indicates that older adults search for information all together about 15% less than younger adults prior to making decisions. Prior research findings associated such behavior mainly with age-related cognitive difficulties. However, recent studies indicate that emotion is linked to influence search decision quality. This research approaches questions about why older adults search less and how this search behavior could be improved. The research is motivated by the broader issues of older users' search behavior, while focusing on the emotional usability of search engine user interfaces. Therefore, this research attempts to accomplish the following three objectives: a) to explore the …

Autonomous Control And Automotive Simulator Based Driver Training Methodologies For Vehicle Run-Off-Road And Recovery Events, Paul Freeman Dec 2014

Autonomous Control And Automotive Simulator Based Driver Training Methodologies For Vehicle Run-Off-Road And Recovery Events, Paul Freeman

All Dissertations

Traffic fatalities and injuries continue to demand the attention of researchers and governments across the world as they remain significant factors in public health and safety. Enhanced legislature along with vehicle and roadway technology has helped to reduce the impact of traffic crashes in many scenarios. However, one specifically troublesome area of traffic safety, which persists, is run-off-road (ROR) where a vehicle's wheels leave the paved portion of the roadway and begin traveling on the shoulder or side of the road. Large percentages of fatal and injury traffic crashes are attributable to ROR. One of the most critical reasons why …
