Incentives - An Ineffective School Improvement Strategy?, Geoff N. Masters

Teacher columnist – Geoff Masters

By the turn of the century, the observation had been made in many countries that substantial increases in expenditure on schools had failed to deliver measurable improvements in student performance. But just how effective are incentives as an improvement strategy?

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

With trademark playfulness and wit, The Symptoms, Hungary’s premiere contemporary dance/theater company, ponders the critical questions of aging. When will I lose my virginity? Will I find work I love? How do I balance work with parenthood? Do I have enough money to retire? How long will I keep my looks? Will I ever have sex again? The Symptoms’ clear-eyed, kind-hearted response to our human vulnerabilities is poignant, funny, and brave. Don’t miss the American debut of this highly original troupe.

Volcan Santiaguito (Guatemala) “breathes” with extraordinary regularity as the edifice's conduit system accumulates free gas, which periodically vents to the atmosphere. Periodic pressurization controls explosion timing, which nearly always occurs at peak inflation, as detected with tiltmeters. Tilt cycles in January 2012 reveal regular 26 ± 6 min inflation/deflation cycles corresponding to at least ~101 kg/s of gas fluxing the system. Very long period (VLP) earthquakes presage explosions and occur during cycles when inflation rates are most rapid. VLPs locate ~300 m below the vent and indicate mobilization of volatiles, which ascend at ~50 m/s. Rapid gas ascent feeds …

Impaired Limb Shortening Following Stroke: What's In A Name?, Virginia L. Little, Theresa E. Mcguirk, Carolynn Patten Oct 2014

Impaired Limb Shortening Following Stroke: What's In A Name?, Virginia L. Little, Theresa E. Mcguirk, Carolynn Patten

PT Faculty Publications

Background: Difficulty advancing the paretic limb during the swing phase of gait is a prominent manifestation of walking dysfunction following stroke. This clinically observable sign, frequently referred to as 'foot drop', ostensibly results from dorsiflexor weakness. Objective: Here we investigated the extent to which hip, knee, and ankle motions contribute to impaired paretic limb advancement. We hypothesized that neither: 1) minimal toe clearance and maximal limb shortening during swing nor, 2) the pattern of multiple joint contributions to toe clearance and limb shortening would differ between post-stroke and non-disabled control groups. Methods: We studied 16 individuals post-stroke during overground walking …

Aerosol emissions from prescribed fires can affect air quality on regional scales. Accurate representation of these emissions in models requires information regarding the amount and composition of the emitted species.Wemeasured a suite of submicron particulatematter species in young plumes emitted from prescribed fires (chaparral and montane ecosystems in California; coastal plain ecosystem in South Carolina) and from open burning of over 15 individual plant species in the laboratory. We report emission ratios and emission factors for refractory black carbon (rBC) and submicron nonrefractory aerosol and compare field and laboratory measurements to assess the representativeness of our laboratory-measured emissions. Laboratory measurements …

Time And Dark Matter From The Conformal Symmetries Of Euclidean Space, Jeffrey S. Hazboun, James Thomas Wheeler Oct 2014

Time And Dark Matter From The Conformal Symmetries Of Euclidean Space, Jeffrey S. Hazboun, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

The quotient of the conformal group of Euclidean 4-space by its Weyl subgroup results in a geometry possessing many of the properties of relativistic phase space, including both a natural symplectic form and non-degenerate Killing metric. We show that the general solution posesses orthogonal Lagrangian submanifolds, with the induced metric and the spin connection on the submanifolds necessarily Lorentzian, despite the Euclidean starting pont. By examining the structure equations of the biconformal space in an orthonormal frame adapted to its phase space properties, we also find that two new tensor fields exist in this geometry, not present in Riemannian geometry. …

Background

Long-term homologous and temporary heterologous protection from dengue virus (DENV) infection may be mediated by neutralizing antibodies. However, neutralizing antibody titers (NTs) have not been clearly associated with protection from infection.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Data from two geographic cluster studies conducted in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand were used for this analysis. In the first study (2004–2007), cluster investigations of 100-meter radius were triggered by DENV-infected index cases from a concurrent prospective cohort. Subjects between 6 months and 15 years old were evaluated for DENV infection at days 0 and 15 by DENV PCR and IgM ELISA. In the second study (2009–2012), …

Sculpting The Umls Refined Semantic Network, Zhe He, C. Paul Morrey, Yehoshua Perl, Gai Elhanan, Ling Chen, Yan Chen, James Geller

Publications and Research

Background The Refined Semantic Network (RSN) for the UMLS was previously introduced to complement the UMLS Semantic Network (SN). The RSN partitions the UMLS Metathesaurus (META) into disjoint groups of concepts. Each such group is semantically uniform. However, the RSN was initially an order of magnitude larger than the SN, which is undesirable since to be useful, a semantic network should be compact. Most semantic types in the RSN represent combinations of semantic types in the UMLS SN. Such a “combination semantic type” is called Intersection Semantic Type (IST). Many ISTs are assigned to very few concepts. Moreover, when reviewing …

Research collaboration between developed countries from the northern hemisphere and developing countries in the southern hemisphere is essential for the understanding and protection of the major proportion of biodiversity located in the tropics. Focusing on the case of sub-Saharan Africa, we here assess the real involvement of northern versus southern contributors, and caution against unequal academic benefit sharing arising from non-commercial biodiversity research that may ultimately hamper sustainable knowledge transfer and long-term biodiversity conservation. We discuss possible drivers that may have led to a business of raw biodiversity data. While we fully support the current efforts to stamp out biopiracy …

Simulation Of Fracture Of Concrete Using Micropolar Peridynamics, Asadollahi Aziz Oct 2014

Simulation Of Fracture Of Concrete Using Micropolar Peridynamics, Asadollahi Aziz

Civil Engineering ETDs

The main goal of the thesis is to develop a constitutive damage model for simulating tensile fracture of concrete using the micropolar peridynamics model. Micropolar peridynamics was proposed by Gerstle in 2007 as a generalization to the bond based peridynamics method introduced by Silling in 2000, which was only capable of handling materials with specific Poissons ratios. Inspired by the bilinear cohesive model in the cohesive crack approach, a new constitutive damage model is proposed to simulate the tensile fracture of a normal-strength concrete. Laboratory experimental data for crack mouth opening displacement vs. load of notched beams, obtained by Chapman …

Inhalable Constituents Of Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke: Chemical Characterization And Health Impact Considerations, Mohamad Sleiman, Jennifer M. Logue, Wentai Luo, James F. Pankow, Lara A. Gundel, Hugo Destaillats Oct 2014

Inhalable Constituents Of Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke: Chemical Characterization And Health Impact Considerations, Mohamad Sleiman, Jennifer M. Logue, Wentai Luo, James F. Pankow, Lara A. Gundel, Hugo Destaillats

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Tobacco smoke residues lingering in the indoor environment, also termed thirdhand smoke (THS), can be a source of long-term exposure to harmful pollutants. THS composition is affected by chemical transformations and by air–surface partitioning over time scales of minutes to months. This study identified and quantified airborne THS pollutants available for respiratory exposure, identified potential environmental tracers, and estimated health impacts to nonsmokers. In a ventilated 18 m3 laboratory chamber, six cigarettes were machine-smoked, and levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and 58 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during an aging period of 18 h. Results were compared with field …
