Schisms In Schooling: Domains Of Power As Seen From Our Students, Kristen Michelle Taylor Dec 2014

Schisms In Schooling: Domains Of Power As Seen From Our Students, Kristen Michelle Taylor

Dissertations

This study investigated the dynamics of power available to students who are assigned to participate in small group instruction as an intervention to low academic scores. It proposes that student experiences of the phenomenon of small group instruction are not currently present in the research literature concerning low student performance in public education, and therefore the research literature is incomplete. A case study was conducted at a public school in St. Louis, Missouri, which resulted in a case of two teachers and five students recruited to participate. Through document analysis, classroom observations, and participant interviews, the participants provided data from …

Contributions Of Unique Active Site Residues Of Eukaryotic Udp-Galactopyranose Mutases To Substrate Recognition And Active Site Dynamics, Isabel Da Fonseca, Insaf A. Qureshi, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Karina Kizjakina, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado Dec 2014

Contributions Of Unique Active Site Residues Of Eukaryotic Udp-Galactopyranose Mutases To Substrate Recognition And Active Site Dynamics, Isabel Da Fonseca, Insaf A. Qureshi, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Karina Kizjakina, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

UDP-glucopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the interconversion between UDP-galactopyranose and UDP-galactofuranose. Absent in humans, galactofuranose is found in bacterial and fungal cell walls and is a cell surface virulence factor in protozoan parasites. For these reasons, UGMs are targets for drug discovery. Here, we report a mutagenesis and structural study of the UGMs from Aspergillus fumigatus and Trypanosoma cruzi focused on active site residues that are conserved in eukaryotic UGMs but are absent or different in bacterial UGMs. Kinetic analysis of the variants F66A, Y104A, Q107A, N207A, and Y317A (A. fumigatus numbering) show decreases in kcat/KM values of 200-1000-fold for the …

Evidence For (And Against) Progenitor Bias In The Size Growth Of Compact Red Galaxies, Stephanie K. Keating, Roberto G. Abraham, Ricardo Schiavon, Genevieve Graves, Ivana Damjanov, Renbin Yan, Jeffrey Newman, Luc Simard Dec 2014

Evidence For (And Against) Progenitor Bias In The Size Growth Of Compact Red Galaxies, Stephanie K. Keating, Roberto G. Abraham, Ricardo Schiavon, Genevieve Graves, Ivana Damjanov, Renbin Yan, Jeffrey Newman, Luc Simard

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Most massive, passive galaxies are compact at high redshifts, but similarly compact massive galaxies are rare in the local universe. The most common interpretation of this phenomenon is that massive galaxies have grown in size by a factor of about five since redshift z = 2. An alternative explanation is that recently quenched massive galaxies are larger (a "progenitor bias"). In this paper, we explore the importance of progenitor bias by looking for systematic differences in the stellar populations of compact early-type galaxies in the DEEP2 survey as a function of size. Our analysis is based on applying the statistical …

The Nax Language: Unifying Functional Programming And Logical Reasoning In A Language Based On Mendler-Style Recursion Schemes And Term-Indexed Types, Ki Yung Ahn Dec 2014

The Nax Language: Unifying Functional Programming And Logical Reasoning In A Language Based On Mendler-Style Recursion Schemes And Term-Indexed Types, Ki Yung Ahn

Dissertations and Theses

Two major applications of lambda calculi in computer science are functional programming languages and mechanized reasoning systems (or, proof assistants). According to the Curry--Howard correspondence, it is possible, in principle, to design a unified language based on a typed lambda calculus for both logical reasoning and programming. However, the different requirements of programming languages and reasoning systems make it difficult to design such a unified language that provides both. Programming languages usually extend lambda calculi with programming-friendly features (e.g., recursive datatypes, general recursion) for supporting the flexibility to model various computations, while sacrificing logical consistency. Logical reasoning systems usually extend …

A More Efficient Nonparametric Test Of Symmetry Based On Overlapping Coefficient, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel Dec 2014

A More Efficient Nonparametric Test Of Symmetry Based On Overlapping Coefficient, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

In this paper we provide a more efficient nonparametric test of symmetry based on the empirical overlap coefficient using kernel density estimation applied to an extreme order statistics, namely extreme ranked set sampling. Our simulation investigation reveals that our proposed test of symmetry is at least as powerful as currently available tests of symmetry. Intensive simulation is conducted to examine the power of the proposed test. An illustration is provided using cardiac output and body weight of neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit.

The Effect Of Ph And Counterion On The Size Distribution And Luminescence Lifetime Of Terbium-Doped Lanthanum Nanocrystals, Sarah Baker Dec 2014

The Effect Of Ph And Counterion On The Size Distribution And Luminescence Lifetime Of Terbium-Doped Lanthanum Nanocrystals, Sarah Baker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In recent years, nanoparticles have been applied to and have gained prevalence in fields such as chemistry, biology, the medical sciences, and biotechnology, and have attracted the attention of medical researchers as potential microscopic drug delivery systems in the human body. In particular, nanoparticles made with the lanthanides have shown themselves to be useful to many biological applications due to their unique luminescent properties. It is crucial to determine optimum synthetic parameters so that nanoparticles are both small enough to pass through the kidneys and also have the ability to attach different functional groups so that they may be relevant to …

A Content-Sensitive Wiki Help System, Eswara Satya Pavan Rajesh Pinapala Dec 2014

A Content-Sensitive Wiki Help System, Eswara Satya Pavan Rajesh Pinapala

Master's Projects

Context-sensitive help is a software application component that enables users to open help pertaining to their state, location, or the action they are performing within the software. Context-sensitive “wiki” help, on the other hand, is help powered by a wiki system with all the features of context-sensitive help. A context-sensitive wiki help system aims to make the context-sensitive help collaborative; in addition to seeking help, users can directly contribute to the help system. I have implemented a context-sensitive wiki help system into Yioop, an open source search engine and software portal created by Dr. Chris Pollett, in order to measure …

Systems Biology Investigation Of Camp Modulation To Increase Smn Levels For The Treatment Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Sean G Mack, Daniel J Cook, Prasad Dhurjati, Matthew E R Butchbach Dec 2014

Systems Biology Investigation Of Camp Modulation To Increase Smn Levels For The Treatment Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Sean G Mack, Daniel J Cook, Prasad Dhurjati, Matthew E R Butchbach

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a leading genetic cause of infant death worldwide, is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the loss of SMN1 (survival motor neuron 1), which encodes the protein SMN. The loss of SMN1 causes a deficiency in SMN protein levels leading to motor neuron cell death in the anterior horn of the spinal cord. SMN2, however, can also produce some functional SMN to partially compensate for loss of SMN1 in SMA suggesting increasing transcription of SMN2 as a potential therapy to treat patients with SMA. A cAMP response element was identified on the SMN2 promoter, implicating cAMP …

Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo Dec 2014

Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo

Publications and Research

Initiation of cardiac arrhythmias typically follows one or more premature impulses either occurring spontaneously or applied externally. In this study, we characterize the dynamics of propagation of single (S2) and double premature impulses (S3), and the mechanisms of block of premature impulses at structural heterogeneities caused by remodeling of gap junctional conductance (Gj) in infarcted myocardium. Using a sub-cellular computer model of infarcted tissue, we found that |INa,max|, prematurity (coupling interval with the previous impulse), and conduction velocity (CV) of premature impulses change dynamically as they propagate away from the site of initiation. There are fundamental differences between the dynamics …

A Representation Of Robotic Behaviors Using Component Port Arbitration, A Paikan, G Metta, L Natale Dec 2014

A Representation Of Robotic Behaviors Using Component Port Arbitration, A Paikan, G Metta, L Natale

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Developing applications considering reactiveness, scalability and re-usability has always been at the center of attention of robotic researchers. Behavior-based architectures have been proposed as a programming paradigm to develop robust and complex behaviors as integration of simpler modules whose activities are directly modulated by sensory feedback or input from other models. The design of behavior based systems, however, becomes increasingly difficult as the complexity of the application grows. This article proposes an approach for modeling and coordinating behaviors in distributed architectures based on port arbitration which clearly separates representation of the behaviors from the composition of the software components. Therefore, …

Distributions Of Ice Supersaturation And Ice Crystals From Airborne Observations In Relation To Upper Tropospheric Dynamical Boundaries, Minghui Diao, Jorgen Jensen, Laura Pan, Cameron Homeyer, Shawn Honomichl, James Bresch, Aaron Bansemer, Eric Jensen Dec 2014

Distributions Of Ice Supersaturation And Ice Crystals From Airborne Observations In Relation To Upper Tropospheric Dynamical Boundaries, Minghui Diao, Jorgen Jensen, Laura Pan, Cameron Homeyer, Shawn Honomichl, James Bresch, Aaron Bansemer, Eric Jensen

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

Cirrus clouds are one of the largest sources of uncertainties in predicting future climate. Ice nucleation and ice crystal growth inside cirrus clouds require ice supersaturation (ISS). Previously, remote sensing observations have shown that the locations of cirrus clouds’ cloud top height are highly correlated with the thermal tropopause height (Pan and Munchak, 2011). However, it is unclear if the initial conditions of cirrus clouds – ice supersaturated region (ISSRs) – have similar features in the extratropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS). In fact, the dynamical processes and conditions that contribute to ISS formation from the microscale (~100 m) …

Examining The Association Between Variability In Classroom Interaction Quality And Problem Behavior In Head Start Children, Veronica A. Fernandez Dec 2014

Examining The Association Between Variability In Classroom Interaction Quality And Problem Behavior In Head Start Children, Veronica A. Fernandez

Open Access Dissertations

The present study examined the role of variability in observed classroom interaction quality (as assessed by the CLASS) in a sample of Head Start children (N = 965 children, within 54 classrooms and across 8 centers). First, the psychometric properties of the typically used classroom quality mean scores were examined to test whether the levels (mean differences) and rank ordering (reliability) of the scores varied across activity settings (Free Play, Whole Group, Small Group, Meals or Routines/Transitions). Then, variability scores were calculated for each of the three classroom quality domains to examine the unique association between variability in classroom interaction …

Scheduling And Cooperative Control Of Electric Vehicles' Charging At Highway Service Stations, Florida Solar Energy Center, Azwirman Gusrialdi Dec 2014

Scheduling And Cooperative Control Of Electric Vehicles' Charging At Highway Service Stations, Florida Solar Energy Center, Azwirman Gusrialdi

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This is a re-print version of a publication for the 53rd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, Los Angeles, California, USA, December 15-17, 2014. Due to their limited ranges, electric vehicles (EVs)need to be periodically charged during their long-distance travels on a highway. Compared to the fossil-fuel powered vehicles, the charging of a single EV takes much more time(up to 30 mins versus 2 mins). As the number of EVs on highways increases, adequate charging infrastructure needs to be put in place. Nonetheless waiting times for EVs to get charged at service stations could still vary significantly unless an appropriate …

Poly-3-Hexylthiophene Nanorods As A Donor For Organic Photovoltaics, Dharmesh Patel Dec 2014

Poly-3-Hexylthiophene Nanorods As A Donor For Organic Photovoltaics, Dharmesh Patel

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Poly-3-hexylthiophene functionalized silsesquioxane nanorods (P3HT-NRs) were prepared by direct hydrolysis and condensation of P3HT-silane precursor using the modified Stöber method. The silane precursor was stirred in a mixture of two solvents in the presence of a base under room temperature for three different reaction times. The size, shape, and morphology of these novel nanostructures were visualized using the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The composition of the P3HT-NRs was confirmed by FTIR and its silane by proton NMR. Future work will focus on evaluating photovoltaic performance of these nanorods as a donor for organic photovoltaics.

Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen Dec 2014

Kaczmarz Iterative Projection And Nonuniform Sampling With Complexity Estimates, Tim Wallace, Ali Safak Sekmen

Computer Science Faculty Research

Kaczmarz’s alternating projection method has been widely used for solving mostly over-determined linear system of equations Ax = b in various fields of engineering, medical imaging, and computational science. Because of its simple iterative nature with light computation, this method was successfully applied in computerized tomography. Since tomography generates a matrix A with highly coherent rows, randomized Kaczmarz algorithm is expected to provide faster convergence as it picks a row for each iteration at random, based on a certain probability distribution. Since Kaczmarz’s method is a subspace projection method, the convergence rate for simple Kaczmarz algorithm was developed in …

Scientizing Culpability: The Implications Of Hall V. Florida And The Possibility Of A “Scientific Stare Decisis”, Christopher Slobogin Dec 2014

Scientizing Culpability: The Implications Of Hall V. Florida And The Possibility Of A “Scientific Stare Decisis”, Christopher Slobogin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Supreme Court’s decision in Hall v. Florida held that “clinical definitions” control the meaning of intellectual disability in the death penalty context. In other words, Hall “scientized” the definition of a legal concept. This Article discusses the implications of this unprecedented move. It also introduces the idea of scientific stare decisis—a requirement that groups that are scientifically alike be treated similarly for culpability purposes—as a means of implementing the scientization process.

We would like to thank the Post Secondary Commission for the generous …

Neutral Density Behavior From 45-90 Km Based On Rayleigh Lidar Observations Above Usu, David Barton Dec 2014

Neutral Density Behavior From 45-90 Km Based On Rayleigh Lidar Observations Above Usu, David Barton

Physics Capstone Projects

There are over 900 nights of observations taken by the Rayleigh lidar above Utah State University from 1993 to 2004. The data have been reduced to give absolute temperatures and relative densities in the mesosphere, from 45-90 km (Herron, 2004, 2007). From the 11 years of relative density data an 11-year climatology of mesospheric densities above Logan, Utah has been created. From this climatology I have been able to normalize the 11 years of density data to the following models: the MSISe00 empirical model, the CPC (Climate Prediction Center) reanalysis model, the ERA Interim reanalysis model, and the NASA MERRA …

Self-Consistent Hartree-Fock Approach For Interacting Bosons In Optical Lattices, Qin Qin Lü, Kelly R. Patton, Daniel E. Sheehy Dec 2014

Self-Consistent Hartree-Fock Approach For Interacting Bosons In Optical Lattices, Qin Qin Lü, Kelly R. Patton, Daniel E. Sheehy

Faculty Publications

A theoretical study of interacting bosons in a periodic optical lattice is presented. Instead of the commonly used tight-binding approach (applicable near the Mott-insulating regime of the phase diagram), the present work starts from the exact single-particle states of bosons in a cubic optical lattice, satisfying the Mathieu equation, an approach that can be particularly useful at large boson fillings. The effects of short-range interactions are incorporated using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, and predictions for experimental observables such as the superfluid transition temperature, condensate fraction, and boson momentum distribution are presented.

Quantifying Individual Losses In A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell, Jennifer Rae Ruffing Dec 2014

Quantifying Individual Losses In A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell, Jennifer Rae Ruffing

Theses and Dissertations

The performance of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is complicated due to the complex interactions of kinetic and transport processes. As a result, changes in one aspect of the cell have consequences in other aspects, which are difficult to elucidate from the full-cell polarization (i.e. voltage vs. current) behavior that fuel cell researchers often use to characterize the performance of their systems. The objective of this work was to develop a strategy to use current and voltage relationships from anode half cells, cathode half-cells, and a hydrogen pump, coupled with methanol crossover data and a mathematical model, to quantify …

The African American Male Achievement Dilemma Through The Eyes Of The African American Male Superintendent, J.R. Falor Green Dec 2014

The African American Male Achievement Dilemma Through The Eyes Of The African American Male Superintendent, J.R. Falor Green

Theses and Dissertations

This research study explores the perspective of African American male superintendents on the African American male achievement dilemma. How do African American male superintendents theorize and respond to the underachievement of African American male students? Do their experiences give them greater insight, and how has this potential insight contributed to the implementation of initiatives that have improved the performance of this subgroup? Three major theoretical perspectives were explored during my review of the literature. Critical Race, Social Reproduction, and Oppositional Culture Theory encompassed the most consistent themes during my research, and helped to situate the study within the broader education …
