Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Light is a potent stimulus for regulating circadian, hormonal, and behavioral systems. In addition, light therapy is effective for certain affective disorders, sleep problems, and circadian rhythm disruption. These biological and behavioral effects of light are influenced by a distinct photoreceptor in the eye, melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), in addition to conventional rods and cones. We summarize the neurophysiology of this newly described sensory pathway and consider implications for the measurement, production, and application of light. A new light-measurement strategy taking account of the complex photoreceptive inputs to these non-visual responses is proposed for use by researchers, …

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoa Leishmania. These organisms secrete acid phosphatases during their growth cycle as an important part of cell targeting to host macrophage cells thus allowing for a successful infection. Secreted acid phosphatases (SAP) are reported to play a significant role in the survival of Leishmania cells, thus evaluation of these enzymes is of interest. The inhibition of SAP can be the focus of a new drug therapy. We tested for SAP activity from Leishmania tarentolae following the addition of a series of vanadium complexes including decavanadate. Cell cultures at different stages in their …

Navigating The Minefield Of Trade Secrets Protection In China, Daniel C.K. Chow Jan 2014

Navigating The Minefield Of Trade Secrets Protection In China, Daniel C.K. Chow

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Many Multinational Companies (MNCs) now consider trade secrets to be the most important intellectual property right in China, ahead of patents, trademarks, and copyrights. While trade secrets have become more valuable than ever as a business asset in China, many MNCs also find that the protection of trade secrets in China is full of pitfalls and traps. Unlike in the case of patents, trademarks, and copyrights, China has no unified law governing trade secrets, but has disjointed provisions scattered throughout various laws. The pitfalls are also created by a high evidentiary burden in proving a theft of a trade secret …

An Introduction To Set Theory And Topology, Ronald C. Freiwald Jan 2014

An Introduction To Set Theory And Topology, Ronald C. Freiwald

Books and Monographs

These notes are an introduction to set theory and topology. They are the result of teaching a two-semester course sequence on these topics for many years at Washington University in St. Louis. Typically the students were advanced undergraduate mathematics majors, a few beginning graduate students in mathematics, and some graduate students from other areas that included economics and engineering. The usual background for the material is an introductory undergraduate analysis course, mostly because it provides a solid introduction to Euclidean space Rn and practice with rigorous arguments — in particular, about continuity. Strictly speaking, however, the material is mostly self-contained. …

Structured Narrative Retell Instruction For Young Children From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: A Preliminary Study Of Feasibility, Suzanne M. Adlof, Angela N. Mcleod, Brianne Leftwich Jan 2014

Structured Narrative Retell Instruction For Young Children From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: A Preliminary Study Of Feasibility, Suzanne M. Adlof, Angela N. Mcleod, Brianne Leftwich

Faculty Publications

Successful acquisition of literacy depends on adequate development of decoding skills as well as broader, meaning-related knowledge and skills for text comprehension. Children from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds are often challenged in both domains, relative to peers who are not economically disadvantaged. The efficacy of code-focused instructional programs for at-risk preliterate children is well supported, but less evidence is available regarding interventions to improve broader language and comprehension skills. This preliminary study tested the feasibility of a new intervention, "structured narrative retell instruction" (SNRI), and explored its potential to enhance meaning-related knowledge and skills, including vocabulary, listening comprehension, and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of 2,3-Difunctionalized Thieno[3,4-B]Pyrazine-Based Terthienyls Structure-Function Relationships And Side Chain Tunability, Ryan Schwiderski Jan 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of 2,3-Difunctionalized Thieno[3,4-B]Pyrazine-Based Terthienyls Structure-Function Relationships And Side Chain Tunability, Ryan Schwiderski

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The ability to tune the physical, electronic, and optical properties of polymer precursors has garnered a great deal of interest in the conjugated organic materials field. The Rasmussen group has previously demonstrated the ability to produce tunable, low band gap materials through the generation of new families of functionalized thieno[3,4-b]pyrazines (TPs). The scope of conventional TPs has been limited to either 2,3-dialkyl or diaryl analogues due to the standard synthetic approach of 3,4-diaminothiophene condensation with available stable α-diones. As a consequence, this limited the ability to effectively tune the electronic and optical properties of the TP unit. In an effort …

Identification Of Delamination Defects In Cfrp Materials Through Lamb Wave Responses, Taylor John Bruhschwein Jan 2014

Identification Of Delamination Defects In Cfrp Materials Through Lamb Wave Responses, Taylor John Bruhschwein

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Delamination is currently a largely undetectable form of damage in composite laminate materials. This thesis will develop a method to more easily detect delamination damage within composite materials. Using finite element analysis modeling and lab testing, a new method from interpreting the results obtained from existing structural health monitoring techniques is developed. Lamb waves were introduced and recorded through an actuator and sensors made of piezoelectric material. The data was then analyzed through a novel data reduction method using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Using the data from FFT, the idea of covariance of energy change was developed. By comparing …

Modeling Of Surface Microtopography And Its Impacts On Hydrologic Processes, Noah Lebassi Habtezion Jan 2014

Modeling Of Surface Microtopography And Its Impacts On Hydrologic Processes, Noah Lebassi Habtezion

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Understanding the impacts of surface microtopography on hydrologic processes is critical. The objectives of this thesis research are: (1) to evaluate the effects of DEM resolution on microtopographic characteristics, hydrologic connectivity, and modeling of hydrologic processes; and (2) to assess the influences of multiple rainfall events on surface and subsurface hydrologic processes with the use of a puddle-to-puddle (P2P) modeling system. The change in DEM resolution has a significant effect on how surface microtopography is depicted, which in turn alters the hydrologic response of a topographic surface. The smoothing of reduced DEM resolution tends to enhance hydrologic connectivity, reduce the …

Modeling Of Temperature Impacts On Fixed Film Microbial Growth And Nitrification Kinetics, Jacob Strombeck Jan 2014

Modeling Of Temperature Impacts On Fixed Film Microbial Growth And Nitrification Kinetics, Jacob Strombeck

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Monod-type kinetic models, used in simulating microbial growth in biological treatment systems, suggest significant decreases of substrate utilization at lower temperatures. However, it is documented that performance of fixed film treatment systems are not hindered with declining temperatures. Previous studies at the Moorhead, MN, Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) showed significant impacts of temperature on biofilm growth in its moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), and studies noted that at low temperatures more biomass was present. Previously, a series of kinetic bench-scale batch tests was performed to measure ammonium removal in the full-scale system. As part of this research, a diffusion based …

Biophysical Studies Of Ligand Binding To Human Histone Deacetylase-8, Raushan Kumar Singh

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Due to an involvement in various patho-physiological conditions, human histone deacetylases (HDACs) are high priority drug targets for the treatment of several diseases, such as cancer, heart failure, neurodegeneration, etc. An effector (inhibitor/activator) of these enzymes has a great potential to alleviate the above disease conditions. In this regard, HDAC inhibitors – Zolinza and Istodax - have already been approved by the FDA for the treatment of T-cell lymphoma, aside from several other inhibitors which are in the advanced level of clinical trials. HDAC8 serves as a prototype to study structural-functional and catalytic features of human HDACs. In order to …

New Strategies For Ruthenium Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation, Jing Zhang Jan 2014

New Strategies For Ruthenium Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation, Jing Zhang

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond activation allows direct functionalization of the ubiquitous C-H bonds in organic molecules to increase the molecular complexity. Since Murai's pioneering work in ruthenium catalyzed regioselective arene-alkene coupling reaction, a number of transition metal catalysts have been developed for C-C bond formation via C-H bond activation. However, metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization faces a number of long-standing challenges such as the control over regio- and stereoselectivity and harsh reaction conditions. Presented herein is our research on the development of ruthenium(II)-based catalysts for new and improved methods in C-C bond formations by formal activation of sp2 C-H bonds and subsequent …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Background. The disruption of physiologic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration initiates atherosclerosis development. The biochemical mechanisms leading to dysfunctional VSMC motility remain unknown. Recently, cytokine BMP-2 has been implicated in various vascular physiologic and pathologic processes. However, whether BMP-2 has any effect upon VSMC motility, or by what manner, has never been investigated. Methods. VSMCs were adenovirally transfected to genetically overexpress BMP-2. VSMC motility was detected by modified Boyden chamber assay, confocal time-lapse video assay, and a colony wounding assay. Gene chip array and RT-PCR were employed to identify genes potentially regulated by BMP-2. Western blot and real-time PCR …

The Market In Unmatured Tort Claims: Twenty-Five Years Later, Stephen G. Marks Jan 2014

The Market In Unmatured Tort Claims: Twenty-Five Years Later, Stephen G. Marks

Faculty Scholarship

In an article in 1989 in the Virginia Law Review, Professor Robert Cooter argued for changes in the law that would facilitate the development of a market in unmatured tort claims. An unmatured tort claim is a potential claim that a potential victim has before any injury has occurred. Cooter proposed that potential victims have the right to sell their unmatured tort claims. That is, Cooter proposed that potential victims be allowed to sell their right to sue even before an accident or injury ever occurs. Even twenty-five years later, the proposal remains both bold and imaginative, and yet it …

Server-Based Desktop Virtualization, Anas Raqi Shabaitah Jan 2014

Server-Based Desktop Virtualization, Anas Raqi Shabaitah

Theses

Virtualization can be accomplished at different layers in the computational stack and with different goals (servers, desktops, applications, storage and network). This research focuses on server-based desktop virtualization. According to the Gartner group, the main business drivers for adopting desktop virtualization are: application compatibility, business continuity, security and compliance, mobility and improved productivity [15]. Despite these business drivers, desktop virtualization has not been widely adopted. According to a survey conducted by Matrix42, only 5% of desktop computers are virtualized [37]. The research deals with the challenges preventing the wider adoption of server-based desktop virtualization while focusing on two of the …

Seasonal And Sex-Specific Diet In Rhinoceros Auklets, Ryan David Carle Jan 2014

Seasonal And Sex-Specific Diet In Rhinoceros Auklets, Ryan David Carle

Master's Theses

We used stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) and conventional chick-diet sampling methods to evaluate seasonal shifts in diets of adult male and female rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata) and prey provided to chicks by each sex in California during 2012-2013. Rhinoceros auklet isotope values underwent similar shifts in both years, which differed in environmental and prey conditions. Mixing models indicated that northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) were important prey for adults during fall/winter and juvenile rockfish spp. were important prey during incubation in both years. Adult trophic level increased between the incubation and chick-rearing periods, and mixing models …

Contesting A Contestation Of Testing: A Reply To Richard Delgado, Dan Subotnik Jan 2014

Contesting A Contestation Of Testing: A Reply To Richard Delgado, Dan Subotnik

Scholarly Works

This article was written as part of an ongoing dialog about the author’s previous article, Does Testing = Race Discrimination?: Ricci, The Bar Exam, the LSAT, and the Challenge to Learning, which defended the Supreme Court’s decision in Ricci v. DeStefano, as well as defending testing more generally against charges of irrelevance, racial obtuseness, and most seriously, race discrimination.

This article specifically responds to Richard Delgado’s article, Standardized Testing as Discrimination: A Reply to Dan Subotnik.

The First Thing We Do, Jorge R. Roig Jan 2014

The First Thing We Do, Jorge R. Roig

Scholarly Works

There is currently a concerted effort to dumb down America. In the midst of this, the American Bar Association’s Council of the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar recently agreed to propose that tenure for law professors be eliminated as a requirement for accreditation of law schools. This article analyzes the arguments for and against tenure in legal academia, and concludes that the main proposed justifications for eliminating tenure are highly questionable, at best. A lawyer is more than a legal technocrat. Lawyers are policy makers and public defenders. They are prosecutors and activists. And the development …

The Impact Of Adaptation Delays On Routing Protocols Formobile Ad-Hoc Networks (Manets), Yamin Al-Mousa Jan 2014

The Impact Of Adaptation Delays On Routing Protocols Formobile Ad-Hoc Networks (Manets), Yamin Al-Mousa

Theses

MANETs are coping with major challenges such as the lack of infrastructure and mobility which causes networks topology to change dynamically. Due to limited resources, nodes have to collaborate and rely packets on the behalf of neighbors to reach their destinations forming multi-hop paths. The selection and maintenance of multi-hop paths is a challenging task as their stability and availability depend on the mobility of participating nodes, where paths used a few moments earlier would be rendered invalid due to ever changing topology. The purpose of a routing protocol is to establish and select valid paths between communicating nodes and …

Visible-Light Photocatalyzed Cross-Linking Of Diacetylene Ligands By Quantum Dots To Improve Their Aqueous Colloidal Stability, Marion G. Götz, Hiroko Takeuchi, Matthew J. Goldfogel, Julia M. Warren, Brandon D. Fennel, Colin D. Heyes Jan 2014

Visible-Light Photocatalyzed Cross-Linking Of Diacetylene Ligands By Quantum Dots To Improve Their Aqueous Colloidal Stability, Marion G. Götz, Hiroko Takeuchi, Matthew J. Goldfogel, Julia M. Warren, Brandon D. Fennel, Colin D. Heyes

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ligand cross-linking is known to improve the colloidal stability of nanoparticles, particularly in aqueous solutions. However, most cross-linking is performed chemically, in which it is difficult to limit interparticle cross-linking, unless performed at low concentrations. Photochemical cross-linking is a promising approach but usually requires ultraviolet (UV) light to initiate. Using such high-energy photons can be harmful to systems in which the ligand–nanoparticle bond is fairly weak, as is the case for the commonly used semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Here, we introduce a novel approach to cross-link thiolated ligands on QDs by utilizing the photocatalytic activity of QDs upon absorbing visible …

Evaluating N-Benzylgalactonoamidines As Putative Transition State Analogs For Β-Galactoside Hydrolysis, Qui-Hua Fan, Susanne Striegler, Rebekah Langston, James Barnett

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental evidence is provided for p-methylbenzyl-D-galactonoamidine to function as a true transition state analog for the enzymatic hydrolysis of aryl-β-D-galactopyranosides by β-galactosidase (A. oryzae). The compound exhibits inhibition constants in the low nanomolar concentration range (12–56 nM) for a selection of substrates. Along these lines, a streamlined synthetic method based on phase-transfer catalysis was optimized to afford the required variety of new aryl-β-D-galactopyranosides. Last, the stability of the galactonoamidines under the assay conditions was confirmed.
