Numerical Prediction Of Collection Efficiency Of A Personal Sampler Based On Cyclone Principle, Antara Badhan Jan 2014

Numerical Prediction Of Collection Efficiency Of A Personal Sampler Based On Cyclone Principle, Antara Badhan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A personal bioaerosol sampler is a self-contained, operation flexible, high-efficient device for indoor air quality (IAQ) and health risk exposure monitoring and measurement. Bio-aerosols such germ-laden viruses, microbial species, airborne microorganisms and volatile organic compounds (VOC) are sucked into the sampler and are deposited on the inner wall surface based on cyclone principal. The major concern with bio-aerosol samplers is the collection efficiency. In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to evaluate key design parameters, specifically the inlet tube angle and collection tube inner wall roughness. 3D incompressible turbulent flow was simulated using commercial software ANSYS FLUENT. …

A Block Precondtioner For A Mixed Finite Element Method For Biot;S Equations, Maranda Lee Bean Jan 2014

A Block Precondtioner For A Mixed Finite Element Method For Biot;S Equations, Maranda Lee Bean

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this Thesis, we explore the solution methods for the linear system resulting from a mixed finite element method applied to the Biot's consolidation model. This model describes the coupled interactions between a porous solid and the fluid contained within it. Specifically, we use a method developed by Yi [Numer. Methods for PDEs, 29(5), pp. 1749-1777] that expands Biot's system to include fluid pressure, solid displacement, fluid flux and total stress as primary unknowns.

As the resulting linear system is a large, sparse, saddle point system, we attempt to solve this system via a Schur complement preconditioned iterative method. Using …

Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin Jan 2014

Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

During the summer, high inlet temperatures affect the power output of gas turbine systems. Evaporative coolers have gained popularity as an inlet cooling method for these systems. Wet compression has been one of the common evaporative cooling methods implemented to increase power output of gas turbine systems due to its simple installation and low cost. This process involves injection of water droplets into the continuous phase of compressor to reduce the temperature of the flow entering the compressor and in turn increase the power output of the whole gas turbine system. This study focused on a single stage rotor-stator compressor …

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron Jan 2014

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The surface of Europa is crosscut by a dense network of fractures and there are many candidate faults for studying past tectonic activity. To better understand the role of tidal stress sources and implications for faulting on Europa, we investigate the relationship between shear and normal stresses at four fault zones: Agenor Linea, Rhadamanthys Linea, Conamara Chaos (Agave/Asterius Linea), and Astypalaea Linea, offering a unique comparison of geological activity of fractures residing in geographically diverse locations of Europa. Assuming tidal diurnal and non-synchronous rotation (NSR) stresses are the primary mechanisms for strike-slip tectonism, here we investigate the mechanics of Coulomb …

Late Completers : How And Why Non-Traditional Graduate Students Who Exceed Program Timelines Of 10 Years Ultimately Complete The Doctoral Process, Lisa Ann Margerum Jan 2014

Late Completers : How And Why Non-Traditional Graduate Students Who Exceed Program Timelines Of 10 Years Ultimately Complete The Doctoral Process, Lisa Ann Margerum

Dissertations

Problem. Doctoral completion rates within the U.S. have historically been shown to be within the 50-60% range; in 2008, the completion rate was 56%. Although most who complete their doctorates do so within 10 years or less, there is a small percentage of students who continue their studies beyond the 10-year mark and ultimately graduate. As more non-traditional students enter the PhD pursuit, particularly older students with full-time jobs, family, and other commitments and who enroll in non-traditional programs, it is important to understand what enables some to continue beyond the 10-year mark and still graduate, what influences the elongation …

Caffeine And Human Perception Of Time, Trevor Fry

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on several components of time perception in an attention-demanding task. Review of the current literature shows that the rhythm of the brain's internal clock, controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which is believed to mediate the perception of short durations, is sensitive to a variety of stimuli including stimulants. This study expands on previous research on the effect of caffeine on prospective time estimation by having participants estimate multiple short durations while completing a cognitively complex time estimation task involving math. The study included a moderate dose caffeine …

How Are Asian Americans Seen And Evaluated? Examining Ethnic Stereotypes And Their Cultural Complexity, Yueh-Ting Lee, Victor C. Ottati, Canchun Lin, Sydney Xinni Chan Jan 2014

How Are Asian Americans Seen And Evaluated? Examining Ethnic Stereotypes And Their Cultural Complexity, Yueh-Ting Lee, Victor C. Ottati, Canchun Lin, Sydney Xinni Chan

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Human stereotypes are more complicated and subtle than scholars or lay people often think. Based on the EPA (i.e., evaluation, potency and accuracy) theory of stereotypes (Lee, 2011; Lee, B., W. & Luo, 2007; Lee, J., & McCauley, 2013; Lee, McCauley & Jussim, 2013; Lee, V. S., & Ma, 2007), it was hypothesized and found that stereotypes of Asian Americans are derived on the basis of both evaluative considerations (prejudice) and a realistic assessment of group characteristics. This produces a pattern of stereotypic judgments that contains both agreement and disagreement when comparing stereotypes of Asian Americans among different perceiver groups …

Size Dependent Translocation And Fetal Accumulation Of Gold Nanoparticles From Maternal Blood In The Rat, Manuela Semmler-Behnke, Jens Lipka, Alexander Wenk, Martin Schaeffer, Furong Tian, Gunter Schmid, Gunter Oberdorster, Wolfgang Kreyling Jan 2014

Size Dependent Translocation And Fetal Accumulation Of Gold Nanoparticles From Maternal Blood In The Rat, Manuela Semmler-Behnke, Jens Lipka, Alexander Wenk, Martin Schaeffer, Furong Tian, Gunter Schmid, Gunter Oberdorster, Wolfgang Kreyling

Articles

There is evidence that nanoparticles (NP) cross epithelial and endothelial body barriers. We hypothesized that gold (Au) NP, once in the blood circulation of pregnant rats, will cross the placental barrier during pregnancy size-dependently and accumulate in the fetal organism by 1. transcellular transport across the hemochorial placenta, 2. transcellular transport across amniotic membranes 3. transport through ~20 nm wide transtrophoblastic channels in a size dependent manner. The three AuNP sizes used to test this hypothesis are either well below, or of similar size or well above the diameters of the transtrophoblastic channels.

Contribution Of Nucleus Accumbens Core To Impulsive Choice: Role Of Dopamine And Glutamate Systems, Justin R. Yates Jan 2014

Contribution Of Nucleus Accumbens Core To Impulsive Choice: Role Of Dopamine And Glutamate Systems, Justin R. Yates

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Impulsive choice refers to the inability to delay gratification and is associated with increased drug abuse vulnerability. Understanding the underlying neural mechanisms linking impulsive choice and drug abuse can contribute to improved treatment options for individuals with substance use disorders. Evidence suggests a major role for nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) in impulsive choice and the reinforcing effects of drugs of abuse. The neurotransmitters glutamate (Glu) and dopamine (DA) are implicated in the neural adaptations observed in drug addiction; however, the role of intra-NAcc Glu and DA in impulsive choice is unclear. Rats were trained in a delay discounting task, in …

High Throughput Multi-Solution Genetic Algorithm (Htmga) For Identification Of Alternate Solutions In A Structural Model Updating Context, Muslum Kilinc Jan 2014

High Throughput Multi-Solution Genetic Algorithm (Htmga) For Identification Of Alternate Solutions In A Structural Model Updating Context, Muslum Kilinc

Theses and Dissertations

Model updating techniques seek to improve numerical models of existing structure by integrating experimental data from the structure. Many techniques use an error function that describes the differences between the numerical model and the experimental data. For example, if dynamic data is available, the error between experimental and numerical modal parameters can be used. Optimization techniques are used to identify the structural parameters that minimize this function. Most model updating techniques are interested in finding the global minima of the error function. However, one could argue that due to a number of factors, such as modeling errors and low sensor …

Modeling Of Chemical-Mechanical Couplings In Solid Oxide Cells And Reliability Analysis, Xinfang Jin Jan 2014

Modeling Of Chemical-Mechanical Couplings In Solid Oxide Cells And Reliability Analysis, Xinfang Jin

Theses and Dissertations

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been well demonstrated as a promising clean energy conversion technology. For practical applications, the SOFC systems should have both good electrochemical performance and high reliability. The SOFCs are usually operated under very aggressive conditions, e.g., high temperatures (600-1000oC) and extremely low oxygen partial pressures (anode electrode). These aggressive operating conditions could lead to a variety of material system degradations, imposing great challenges on meeting lifetime requirement of SOFC commercial applications. It is therefore essential to increase the understanding of fundamental SOFC degradation mechanisms.

The basic structure of SOFCs is a positive electrode-electrolyte-negative electrode (PEN) …

Identifying Performance Criteria Of Fully Bioresorbable Scaffolds For Endovascular Applications, Jahid Ferdous Jan 2014

Identifying Performance Criteria Of Fully Bioresorbable Scaffolds For Endovascular Applications, Jahid Ferdous

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) have revolutionized percutaneous coronary intervention in clinical cardiovascular medicine. As opposed to permanent alternatives such as metallic stents, BRS have an inherent potential to reduce the occurrence of untoward events such as vessel re-narrowing or thrombosis by virtue of undergoing complete and controlled resorption post- implantation. While BRS platforms demonstrate a clear potential to mitigate risk stemming from incomplete vessel healing, they introduce a new set of considerations to clinical safety and efficacy. Foremost among these issues is the fate of and biological response to material by-products that evolve throughout the scaffold degradation and erosion processes, …

Next Discoveries In Neutrino Mixing: Electron Neutrino Appearance, Hongyue Duyang Jan 2014

Next Discoveries In Neutrino Mixing: Electron Neutrino Appearance, Hongyue Duyang

Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of neutrino oscillation is a clear evidence of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Measurements of electron neutrino ($\nu_e$) and electron anti-neutrino $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearances are the most important channels to complete the neutrino mixing matrix. In a $ \nu_{e} $/$\bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance experiment, a near detector (ND) is used to constrain the neutrino flux and measure the backgrounds to the signal. Backgrounds to the $ \nu_{e} $ appearance comes from Neutral Current Muon Neutrino Interactions ($\nu_{\mu}$-NC), Charged Current Muon Neutrino Interactions ($\nu_{\mu}$-CC), beam $ \nu_{e} $ events and outside backgrounds. The background components are then extrapolated to the far …

Material Synthesis And Fabrication Method Development For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Hanping Ding Jan 2014

Material Synthesis And Fabrication Method Development For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Hanping Ding

Theses and Dissertations

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are operated in high temperature conditions (750-1000 oC). The high operating temperature in turn may lead to very complicated material degradation issues, significantly increasing the cost and reducing the durability of SOFC material systems. In order to widen material selections, reduce cost, and increase durability of SOFCs, there is a growing interest to develop intermediate temperature SOFCs (500-750 oC). However, lowering operating temperature will cause substantial increases of ohmic resistance of electrolyte and polarization resistance of electrodes. This dissertation aimed at developing high-performance intermediate-temperature SOFCs through the employment of a series of layered perovskite oxides …

A Multiagent Approach Towards Solving Complex Problems Of Sociotechnical Systems, Hongying Du Jan 2014

A Multiagent Approach Towards Solving Complex Problems Of Sociotechnical Systems, Hongying Du

Theses and Dissertations

Complex resource allocation problems arise due to complex human societies and scarce resources to be distributed. Scarce resources could be food, water, and energy. Meanwhile, the size of the problem, the intersection of different areas, and possible global consequences all add to the complexity of the problems, which makes it difficult for humans to solve the problems by themselves.

For all these reasons, humans need technical help to tackle complex problems. Since humans participating in the problems usually own part of the information about the problems, and no one may see the whole picture of the problems, it is natural …

Seismic Characterization Of The J-Reflector Near The Meizoseismal Area Of The 1886 Charleston Earthquake For Lithologic Constraint, Craig Cunningham Jan 2014

Seismic Characterization Of The J-Reflector Near The Meizoseismal Area Of The 1886 Charleston Earthquake For Lithologic Constraint, Craig Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

Investigations into the relationship between geologic structure and seismicity in and around the meizoseismal area of the 1886 Charleston earthquake have been ongoing since the 1970s. Seismic reflection profiles collected in this area display a prominent, laterally continuous, high amplitude, low frequency, two cycle reflection at ~0.7-1.2 s TWT, termed the "J" reflector, which has been correlated with Lower to Middle Jurassic tholeiitic basalt flows encountered in the Clubhouse Crossroads wells. The "J" reflector was also extended offshore onto the continental shelf. Recent reevaluation of sub Coastal Plain wells within the South Georgia Rift (SGR) Basin, including wells around the …

Applications Of Bayesian Nonparametrics To Reliability And Survival Data, Li Li Jan 2014

Applications Of Bayesian Nonparametrics To Reliability And Survival Data, Li Li

Theses and Dissertations

Reliability and survival data are widely encountered across many common settings. Subjects under investigation often include machines, bioassays, patients, etc.; their reliability or survival distribution, and its association with covariate processes, are commonly of interest. Within this dissertation, the first two chapters focus on reliability data where repairable systems fail and get interventions, e.g. repairs in the event process. It begins with a nonparametric test for the commonly assumed ''good as old'' assumption for minimal repair models and then a semi-parametric regression model is introduced for reliability data using Kijima's effective age. The third chapter focuses on survival data observed …

Comparative Recharge Rates Of Isolated And Riverine Wetlands, Chenille Hargrove Williams Jan 2014

Comparative Recharge Rates Of Isolated And Riverine Wetlands, Chenille Hargrove Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Isolated wetlands have a slightly depressed topography surrounded by an upland area. There is no direct surface water connection, as with riverine wetlands; however, there is a groundwater connection that allows isolated wetlands to have similar hydrologic functions to riverine wetlands. This study sought to compare surficial aquifer groundwater recharge rates of several isolated and riverine wetlands in the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas by evaluating soil characteristics, water table fluctuations, and precipitation from January 2012 - September 2012. Data analysis indicated no significant difference in mean recharge rates between the isolated and riverine wetlands at each study site. Whereas …

This research attempted to examine the relationship between the degree to which a principal was data-driven and the school's performance on standardized tests and state report card values.

The research questions are:

1. To what degree do current school principals in select districts from the Charleston area of South Carolina see themselves as data-driven leaders?

2. To what extent are the 12 specific behaviors that define a …

Web Service Transaction Correctness, Aspen Olmsted Jan 2014

Web Service Transaction Correctness, Aspen Olmsted

Theses and Dissertations

In our research we investigate the problem of providing consistency, availability and durability for Web Service transactions. First, we show that the popular lazy replica update propagation method is vulnerable to loss of transactional updates in the presence of hardware failures. We propose an extension to the lazy update propagation approach to reduce the risk of data loss. Our approach is based on the "buddy" system, requiring that updates are preserved synchronously in two replicas, called buddies. The rest of the replicas are updated using lazy update propagation protocols. Our method provides a balance between durability (i.e., effects of the …

Polyaminocarboxylic Acids As Potential Candidates For Trivalent Actinide/Lanthanide Separations, Daniel Stephen Kissel Jan 2014

Polyaminocarboxylic Acids As Potential Candidates For Trivalent Actinide/Lanthanide Separations, Daniel Stephen Kissel

Dissertations

Nuclear energy, which has historically been considered an alternative energy solution in the United States, is regaining support as an efficient means of energy production. The viability of nuclear energy for the future, however, will remain suspect until issues involving the waste created are fully addressed in the next generation of advanced nuclear fuel cycles. The TALSPEAK process, developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is a classic solvent extraction technique that employs a series of analytical separations in an effort to remove radioactive contaminants from spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and recover uranium in high purity. This separation utilizes a polyaminocarboxylic …
