Improving Stock Assessment Capabilities For The Coral Reef Fishes Of Hawaii And The Pacific Region, Marc Olivier Nadon
Improving Stock Assessment Capabilities For The Coral Reef Fishes Of Hawaii And The Pacific Region, Marc Olivier Nadon
Open Access Dissertations
Stock assessment methods have been proposed for data-poor fisheries that rely mainly on cost-effective abundance-at-size data and some basic demographic knowledge on growth, maturity, and longevity. However, even these simple data requirements are often unmet. Additionally, coral reef fishes are often monitored using disparate fisheries-independent and -dependent survey methodologies that cannot easily be combined into single datasets. The goal of this dissertation was to develop a series of methods that allow for the efficient assessment of the sustainability of the coral reef fisheries of the Hawaiian Archipelago. To achieve this goal, the specific objectives of this dissertation were to: (1) …
Computational Insights Into The Mechanisms And Structures Of Peptide Bond Cleaving Metalloenzymes And Their Synthetic Analogues, Tingting Zhang
Computational Insights Into The Mechanisms And Structures Of Peptide Bond Cleaving Metalloenzymes And Their Synthetic Analogues, Tingting Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
The selective hydrolysis of peptide or amide bond is required in a wide range of biological, biotechnological and industrial applications. There are significant kinetic barriers to these reactions since peptide bonds are extremely stable and possess a half-life for hydrolysis of 350–600 years at room temperature and pH 4–8. Therefore, nature has devised enzymes to rapidly and selectively cleave these bonds under physiological conditions that are known as peptidases. Specifically, metallopeptidases, generate a scaffold capable of binding one or two metal ions to hydrolyze peptide bonds. The studies on metallopeptidases are important to understand the functions of these enzymes and …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Coral populations at distributional margins frequently experience suboptimal and variable conditions. Recurrent El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warming events have caused extensive mortality of reef-building corals in the Eastern Pacific, and particularly impacted branching pocilloporid corals in the Galápagos Islands. Pocillopora spp. were previously more common and formed incipient reefs at several locations in the archipelago but now occur as scattered colonies. Here, we report an unusually concentrated aggregation of colonies and evaluate their current genetic diversity. In particular we focus on a large population of 1614 live Pocillopora colonies found in a volcanic lagoon along the southern shore of Isabela …
Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton
Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated how senior management is motivated to commit to information system security (ISS). Research shows senior management participation is critical to successful ISS, but has not explained how senior managers are motivated to participate in ISS. Information systems research shows pressures external to the organization have greater influence on senior managers than internal pressures. However, research has not fully examined how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS. This study addressed that gap by examining how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS through the lens of neo-institutional theory. The research design was survey research. Data …
Serving Military Families: Perceptions Of Educational Counseling In A Virtual Environment, Taryn Stevenson
Serving Military Families: Perceptions Of Educational Counseling In A Virtual Environment, Taryn Stevenson
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The advances in communication technology over the past 20 years have significant implications for the delivery of psycho-educational therapeutic services to populations that have been historically underserved due to remote locations lacking trained providers. One such population is military families, who also suffer from a negative stigma of asking for outside help or education for personal growth. This population also faces increasing mental health needs due to military deployment in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). These operations have increased the number of returning service members who have been physically and mentally injured. The effect that these …
Child Custody - Parental Rights Vs The Child’S Best Interest, J. Herbie Difonzo
Child Custody - Parental Rights Vs The Child’S Best Interest, J. Herbie Difonzo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The November 2014 elections included a North Dakota voter initiative emblematic of the vigorous debate taking place nationwide about child custody.
The “Parental Rights Initiative” required courts to award “equal parenting time” to both parents after divorce or separation. The measure was defeated by a sizable margin (62% to 38%) but it represents only the latest round in a combustible campaign to change how child custody cases are decided.

A Review Of Combined Advanced Oxidation Technologies For The Removal Of Organic Pollutants From Water, Jimoh O. Tijani, Ojo O. Fatoba, Godfrey Madzivire, Leslie F. Petrik
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Water pollution through natural and anthropogenic activities has become a global problem causing short-and long-term impact on human and ecosystems. Substantial quantity of individual or mixtures of organic pollutants enter the surface water via point and nonpoint sources and thus affect the quality of freshwater. These pollutants are known to be toxic and difficult to remove by mere biological treatment. To date, most research on the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater were based on the exploitation of individual treatment process. This single-treatment technology has inherent challenges and shortcomings with respect to efficiency and economics. Thus, application of two advanced …
Top-Down Processes In Simulated Combined Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect Of Context And The Role Of Low-Frequency Cues In The Perception Of Temporally Interrupted Speech, Soo Hee Oh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the number of unilateral cochlear implant (CI) users with functional residual-hearing has increased and bimodal hearing has become more prevalent. According to the multi-source speech perception model, both bottom-up and top-down processes are important components of speech perception in bimodal hearing. Additionally, these two components are thought to interact with each other to different degrees depending on the nature of the speech materials and the quality of the bottom-up cues. Previous studies have documented the benefits of bimodal hearing as compared with a CI alone, but most of them have focused on the importance of bottom-up, low-frequency …

Some Ratio-Cum-Product Type Estimators For Population Mean Under Double Sampling In The Presence Of Non-Response, Hemant K. Verma, Prayas Sharma, Rajesh Singh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, we have proposed some ratio-cum-product type estimators for population mean of the study variable y in the presence of non-response using auxiliary information under double sampling. The expressions of mean squared error (MSE) of the proposed estimators are derived under double (two-stage) sampling. In addition, an empirical study is carried out to show the properties of the proposed estimators..

Estimation In Step-Stress Accelerated Life Tests For Weibull Distribution With Progressive First-Failure Censoring, M. M. Mohie El-Din, S. E. Abu-Youssef, Nahed S. A. Aly, A. M. Abd El-Raheem
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Based on progressive first-failure censoring, step-stress partially accelerated life tests are considered when the lifetime of a product follows Weibull distribution. The maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) are obtained for the distribution parameters and the acceleration factor. In addition, asymptotic variance and covariance matrix of the estimators are given. Furthermore, confidence intervals of the estimators are presented. The optimal stress change time for the step-stress partially accelerated life test is determined by minimizing the asymptotic variance of MLEs of the model parameters and the acceleration factor. Simulation results are carried out to study the precision of the MLEs for the parameters …
A Mixture Of Generalized Negative Binomial Distribution With Generalized Exponential Distribution, Adil Rashid, Zahoor Ahmad, Tariq R Jan
A Mixture Of Generalized Negative Binomial Distribution With Generalized Exponential Distribution, Adil Rashid, Zahoor Ahmad, Tariq R Jan
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The negative binomial distribution has become increasingly popular as a more flexible alternative to Poisson distribution, especially when it is questionable whether the strict requirements for Poisson distribution could be satisfied. But negative binomial distribution is better for overdispersed count data that are not necessarily heavy-tailed, for heavy tailed count data the traditional statistical distributions such as Poisson and negative binomial cannot be used efficiently. In this paper an attempt has been made to obtain a mixture of generalized negative binomial distribution with that of generalized exponential distribution, which is obtained by mixing the generalized negative binomial distribution with generalized …

Inferences On The Competing Risk Model, Bhupendra Singh, Sachin Tomer
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this article, a competing risk model is analyzed in the presence of complete and censored data when the causes of failures follow different family of failure time distributions. We derive the maximum likelihood and Bayes estimators of the parameters involved in the model and the relative risks. The goodness-of-fit of the competing risks model with the considered failure time distributions to a real data set is also demonstrated.

Transmuted Exponentiated Fr ˆEchet Distribution: Properties And Applications, I. Elbatal, G. Asha, Vincent Raja
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Transmuted probability distribution corresponding to a distribution function G(x) is defined as F(x) = (1+l )G(x) −lG(x)2; |l | ≤ 1. In this paper we study some general properties of the transmuted probability distribution function in relation to the base distribution G(x). In particular the transmuted exponentiated Frˆechet (TEF) distribution is studied in detail. The different methods of estimation of parameters such as, weighted least squares and the maximum likelihood estimates of this distribution are studied. Finally, a real time data analysis is performed for this distribution and it is found that this class is more flexible class and it …
On Fuzzy Three Level Large Scale Linear Programming Problem, O. E. Emam, A. M. Abdo, A. A. Abohany
On Fuzzy Three Level Large Scale Linear Programming Problem, O. E. Emam, A. M. Abdo, A. A. Abohany
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This paper suggests an algorithm to solve a three level large scale linear programming problem with fuzzy numbers, where all coefficients of the objective functions are symmetric trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. A three-level programming problem can be thought as a static version of the Stackelberg strategy. The suggested algorithm uses a linear ranking function at each level to define a crisp model which is equivalent to the fuzzy number, then all decision makers attempts to optimize its problem separately as a large scale programming problem using Dantzig andWolfe decomposition method. Therefore, we handle the optimization process through a series of sub …
Modeling Time To Default On A Personal Loan Portfolio In Presence Of Disproportionate Hazard Rates, Francisco Louzada, Vicente G. Cancho, Mauro R. Oliveira, Bao Yiqi
Modeling Time To Default On A Personal Loan Portfolio In Presence Of Disproportionate Hazard Rates, Francisco Louzada, Vicente G. Cancho, Mauro R. Oliveira, Bao Yiqi
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper we consider a parametric Weibull mixture cure model for modeling time to default on a personal loan portfolio in presence of disproportionate hazard rate. The main contribution of this paper is to evidence that mixture cure models are appropriate for non proportional sceneries, which has not been claimed in recent articles that brings survival analysis approach for credit scoring modeling. A straight comparison with well known proportional hazard mixture cure model presented in Peng and Dear (2000), provides evidence that risk measurements derived from this framework can be greatly affected if required proportional conditions are not satisfied. …

Bayesian Reliability Estimation Of Inverted Exponential Distribution Under Progressive Type-Ii Censored Data, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Umesh Singh, Abhimanyu Singh Yadav, Pradeep K. Vishwakarma
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The present study deals with the estimation procedure for the parameter, reliability and hazard functions of the inverted exponential distribution under progressive Type-II censored data. For estimation purpose, we have considered both classical and Bayesian method of estimation. The Bayes estimates of the parameter, reliability and hazard functions are calculated under symmetric and asymmetric loss functions. We have also computed the 95% asymptotic and highest posterior density (HPD) intervals of the parameter. Further, Monte Carlo simulation technique has been used to compare the performances of the Bayes estimators with corresponding maximum likelihood estimators under both the loss functions. Finally, we …

Concomitants Of Case-Ii Of Generalized Order Statistics From Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern Distributions, M. M. Mohie El-Din, M. M. Amein, M. S. Mohamed
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, the concomitants of case-II of generalized order statistics from Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern (FGM) distributions and recurrence relations between their moments are studied. Further, we provide the minimum variance linear unbiased estimator of the location and scale parameters of the concomitants of ordinary order statistics from some distributions.
Dual To Separate Ratio Type Exponential Estimator In Post-Stratification, Hilal A. Lone, Rajesh Tailor
Dual To Separate Ratio Type Exponential Estimator In Post-Stratification, Hilal A. Lone, Rajesh Tailor
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This paper deals with the problem of estimation of finite population mean in case of post-stratification. Following the approach of Srivenkataramana [16] and Bondyopadhyayh [2], we have proposed dual to separate ratio type exponential estimator. It has been shown that the proposed estimator is more efficient than usual unbiased estimator, usual dual to separate ratio type estimator and other estimators under certain given conditions. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimator is obtained up to the first degree of approximation. An empirical study has been carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimator.

Improved Product Cum Dual To Product Estimator Of Population Mean In Stratified Random Sampling, Subhash Kumar Yadav, Alok Kumar Shukla
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This manuscript deals with the estimation of population mean in stratified random sampling where the units are non-homogeneous for the characteristics under study using product cum dual to product estimator utilizing the negatively correlated auxiliary variable. The expressions for the bias and mean square error (MSE) of proposed estimator have been obtained up to the first degree of approximation. The optimum value of the constant a involved in the estimator that minimizes the mean square error of the proposed estimator has been obtained. The minimum value of the mean square error of proposed estimator for this optimum value of a …
