Investigation Of Spherical Bearings For Use In The Ultraform Finishing Polishing Process, Randall Scott Defisher Ii Nov 2014

Investigation Of Spherical Bearings For Use In The Ultraform Finishing Polishing Process, Randall Scott Defisher Ii

Theses

UltraForm Finishing (UFF) is a production-level optical polishing process consisting of a moving belt that is pressed into an optical surface by a carrier wheel. The current configuration is comprised of a cylindrical carrier wheel attached to cylindrical roller bearings. As the optics market is moving towards aspheric geometry with smaller radii of curvature, geometric limitations associated with roller bearings requires the development of a modified approach to the UFF process.

This thesis explores the feasibility of incorporating spherical fluid bearing elements in the UFF process as a replacement for roller bearings. Self-acting (or wedge film) and externally pressurized hydrostatic …

Non-Neutral Evolution And Reciprocal Monophyly Of Two Expressed Mhc Class Ii B Genes In Leach’S Storm-Petrel, Donald C. Dearborn, Andrea B. Gager, Morgan E. Gilmour, Andrew G. Mcarthur, Douglas A. Hinerfeld, Robert A. Mauck

All Faculty Scholarship

The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) is subject to pathogen-mediated balancing selection and can link natural selection with mate choice. We characterized two Mhc class II B loci in Leach’s storm-petrel, Oceanodroma leucorhoa, focusing on exon 2 which encodes the portion of the protein that binds pathogen peptides. We amplified and sequenced exon 2 with locus-specific nested PCR and Illumina MiSeq using individually barcoded primers. Repeat genotyping of 78 single-locus genotypes produced identical results in 77 cases (98.7 %). Sequencing of messenger RNA (mRNA) from three birds confirmed expression of both loci, consistent with the observed absence of stop codons or …

The Detection Of Peroxynitrite Using 19f Magnetic Resonance Probes, Kevin Bruemmer

Collection of Engaged Learning

The following report presents the work done by Kevin Bruemmer for his Engaged Learning project. The 19F magnetic resonance probes 5-uoroisatin and 6-uoroisatin were reacted with ONOO- to yield anthranilic acid derivatives through a novel oxidative decarbonyaltion reaction. Utilizing 19F NMR spectroscopy techniques, the presence of ONOO- can be determined through a chemical shift switching signal. 5-uoroisatin was subsequently used to detect ONOO- in living lung epithelial cells.

Synthesis Of Hydrogenated Thiol-Silanes For Selective Reactions, Macartney Welborn Nov 2014

Synthesis Of Hydrogenated Thiol-Silanes For Selective Reactions, Macartney Welborn

Collection of Engaged Learning

The intention of this experiment is to show the creation of multifunctional thiols from the reaction between various hydrochlorosilanes and mercaptoethanol in an attempt to utilize their distinct properties for practical applications. Multifunctional thiols have many useful applications including use in high-refractive-index lenses, 1 heavy metal chelation, 2 and degradable plastics3. Previous work, 5 in our lab has explored a class of reactions key to the synthesis of these compounds: the reaction between methylated chlorosilanes with mercaptoalcohols. We extended this reaction to include hydrogenated chlorosilanes. This allows us to produce multifunctional thiols with an additional functionalizable position at …

Creating A National Society For The Enhancement Of Indonesian Citizenry: Furthering The Liberal Arts In Higher Education, Judith Puncochar

Other Presentations

Three processes come to mind when we think about launching a national society for the enhancement of the Indonesian citizenry by furthering the study of Liberal Arts in higher education. The first is Excitement. People who work with the Liberal Arts experience a shared excitement. Students are genuinely excited to hone critical thinking, decision-making, leadership, and speaking skills engendered through classroom study of the Liberal Arts. Lecturers are genuinely interested in learning how to teach with a student-centered Liberal Arts focus. The second process is Cooperation. Humans in all occupations cooperate and learn interactively and collaboratively together. A …

The Number Of Framings Of A Knot In A 3-Manifold, Patricia Cahn, Vladimir Chernov, Rustam Sadykov Nov 2014

The Number Of Framings Of A Knot In A 3-Manifold, Patricia Cahn, Vladimir Chernov, Rustam Sadykov

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

In view of the self-linking invariant, the number |K| of framed knots in S3 with given underlying knot K is infinite. In fact, the second author previously defined affine self-linking invariants and used them to show that |K| is infinite for every knot in an orientable manifold unless the manifold contains a connected sum factor of S1 × S2; the knot K need not be zero-homologous and the manifold is not required to be compact. We show that when M is orientable, the number |K| is infinite unless K intersects a nonseparating sphere at exactly one point, in which case …

An Optical Tracking System For Radiosurgery Of Uveal Melanoma By Cyberknife, Hairong Chen Nov 2014

An Optical Tracking System For Radiosurgery Of Uveal Melanoma By Cyberknife, Hairong Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular tumor in adults. One of the effective managements of ocular melanoma is the localized radiation treatment. In addition to the commonly performed invasive radioactive plaque brachytherapy, using focused external photon radiations, x-rays or gamma rays, have emerged as treatment options. However, these radiation delivery methods are either involved with the invasive surgical operation or limited by the gantry movement to account for the involuntary movement of the eyeball. The goal of this doctoral research is to design and validate a method that can offer a non-invasive radiosurgery for uveal melanoma and to …

Fearless Friday: Sean Pethybridge, Christina L. Bassler

SURGE

Talking with Sean Pethybridge ’15, one could easily assume his interest in agriculture and food justice developed at a very young age. Sean confesses that he had very limited knowledge prior to attending Gettysburg. “My grandpa had a garden and the most experience I had with that was picking green beans during the summer time when I was younger,” he jokes. Comment On “Chemically Mediated Behavior Of Recruiting Corals And Fishes: A Tipping Point That May Limit Reef Recovery”, Andrew H. Baird, Vivian R. Cumbo, Joana Figueiredo, Saki Harii, Tom Hata, Joshua S. Madin

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Dixson et al. (2014) report that coral larvae navigate towards chemical cues associated with healthy reefs and avoid cues from degraded reefs. However, the swimming capabilities of coral larvae and well-established patterns of recruitment and reef hydrodynamics indicate that coral larvae will not be able to use these cues to recruit to healthy reefs. Perfuming degraded reefs, as suggested by Dixson et al (2014), will not enhance recovery rather it will distract from the difficult task of reducing fishing effort and improving water quality.

An analysis of ≃19 500 narrow ( ≲ 200 km s−1) C iv λλ1548.2,1550.8 absorbers in ≃34 000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra is presented. The statistics of the number of absorbers as a function of outflow velocity shows that in approximately two-thirds of outflows, with multiple C iv absorbers present, absorbers are line-locked at the 500 km s−1 velocity separation of the C iv absorber doublet; appearing as ‘triplets’ in the quasar spectra. Line-locking is an observational signature of radiative line-driving in outflowing material, where the successive shielding of ‘clouds’ of material in the outflow …

Metal sulfides and selenides are important industrially as semiconductor materials, pigments, electrochemical cells, solar energy conversion and catalysts. The purpose of this study was to determine if a reaction occurs at elevated temperatures between sulfur and selenium with electropositive metals. Reactions were studied using a TG/DTA instrument. The metals used to react with sulfur were copper, nickel, lead, cobalt, manganese, iron, zinc, and cadmium. For comparison, copper, lead, and nickel were reacted with elemental selenium.

Perceptual Modeling And Reproduction Of Gloss, Adria Fores Herranz Nov 2014

Perceptual Modeling And Reproduction Of Gloss, Adria Fores Herranz

Theses

The reproduction of gloss on displays is generally not based on perception and as a consequence does not guarantee the best visualization of a real material. The reproduction is composed of four different steps: measurement, modeling, rendering, and display. The minimum number of measurements required to approximate a real material is unknown. The error metrics used to approximate measurements with analytical BRDF models are not based on perception, and the best visual approximation is not always obtained. Finally, the gloss perception difference between real objects and objects seen on displays has not sufficiently been studied and might be influencing the …

Agricultural Classification Of Multi-Temporal Modis Imagery In Northwest Argentina Using Kansas Crop Phenologies, Jarrett Alexander Keifer Nov 2014

Agricultural Classification Of Multi-Temporal Modis Imagery In Northwest Argentina Using Kansas Crop Phenologies, Jarrett Alexander Keifer

Dissertations and Theses

Subtropical deforestation in Latin America is thought to be driven by demand for agricultural land, particularly to grow soybeans. However, existing remote sensing methods that can differentiate crop types to verify this hypothesis require high spatial or spectral resolution data, or extensive ground truth information to develop training sites, none of which are freely available for much of the world. I developed a new method of crop classification based on the phenological signatures of crops extracted from multi-temporal MODIS vegetation indices. I tested and refined this method using the USDA Cropland Data Layer from Kansas, USA as a reference. I …

Mr-Tree: A Customizable Gpu Mapreduce Framework, Zhi Qiao Nov 2014

Mr-Tree: A Customizable Gpu Mapreduce Framework, Zhi Qiao

Student Theses and Dissertations

The MapReduce programming model has been criticized for a long time for its lack of flexibility to apply on many difficult scientific computations. Currently, several approaches try to conduct a more flexible MapReduce framework, but some of them are required to run on a particular platform, others have a lack of support to GPU environments. In this thesis, we present MR-Tree, a customizable GPU MapReduce framework. In MR-Tree, users can configure each task's data I/O behavior, so computations that have strong data dependency will no longer hold back the MapReduce runtime. Moreover, MR-Tree also features configurable workflow. Users can arrange …

Confined Mesoscopic Fluid-Like Films Analyzed With Frequency Modulation And Acoustic Detection, Rodolfo Fernandez Rodriguez Nov 2014

Confined Mesoscopic Fluid-Like Films Analyzed With Frequency Modulation And Acoustic Detection, Rodolfo Fernandez Rodriguez

Dissertations and Theses

Complete understanding of the physics underlying the changes in viscoelasticity, relaxation time, and phase transitions that mesoscopic fluid-like systems undergo at solid-liquid interfaces or under confinement remains one of the major challenges in condensed matter physics. Moreover, studies of confined mesoscopic fluid films are relevant to technological areas like adhesion, wetting processes and nanotribology.

This thesis addresses the interaction between two sliding solids interfaces separated by a nanometer sized gap, with emphasis on the role of the mesoscopic fluid film trapped between them. For this purpose we integrated two acoustic techniques, recently introduced by our group, into a sub-nanometer precision …

Teachers Teaching Teachers: A Sustainable And Inexpensive Professional Development Program To Improve Instruction, Carol L. Campbell Nov 2014

Teachers Teaching Teachers: A Sustainable And Inexpensive Professional Development Program To Improve Instruction, Carol L. Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

School districts face tremendous budget challenges and, as a result, professional development has been "trimmed" from many school budgets. (Habegger & Hodanbosi, 2011). School administrators responsible for planning professional development face a daunting task and often focus on PowerPoints, district mandated training, one-shot presentations, and workshops that are delivered by expensive experts. These types of activities lack teacher collaboration, time for sharing of ideas and opportunity for reflection and analysis (Torff & Byrnes, 2011, Coggins, Zuckerman & Mckelvey, 2010).

The problem addressed in this study is that teacher professional development is usually planned by school administrators who are provided little …

Using Art To Teach Students Science Outdoors: How Creative Science Instruction Influences Observation, Question Formation, And Involvement, Christina Schull Cone Nov 2014

Using Art To Teach Students Science Outdoors: How Creative Science Instruction Influences Observation, Question Formation, And Involvement, Christina Schull Cone

Dissertations and Theses

Elementary education has become increasingly divided into subjects and focused on the demand for high math and reading scores. Consequently, teachers spend less time devoted to science and art instruction. However, teaching art and science is crucial to developing creative and rational thinking, especially for observation and questioning skills. In this study, third grade students attending an urban school in Portland, Oregon received instruction of an art strategy using observational and quantifying drawing techniques. This study examines, "Will an art strategy observing the local environment help students make observations and ask questions?" and "In what ways are student learning and …

Effects Of Ocean Acidification On The Dissolution Rates Of Reef-Coral Skeletons, Robert Van Woesik, Kelly Van Woesik, Liana Van Woesik, Sandra Van Woesik Nov 2014

Effects Of Ocean Acidification On The Dissolution Rates Of Reef-Coral Skeletons, Robert Van Woesik, Kelly Van Woesik, Liana Van Woesik, Sandra Van Woesik

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Ocean acidification threatens the foundation of tropical coral reefs. This study investigated three aspects of ocean acidification: (i) the rates at which perforate and imperforate coral-colony skeletons passively dissolve when pH is 7.8, which is predicted to occur globally by 2100, (ii) the rates of passive dissolution of corals with respect to coral-colony surface areas, and (iii) the comparative rates of a vertical reef-growth model, incorporating passive dissolution rates, and predicted sea-level rise. By 2100, when the ocean pH is expected to be 7.8, perforate Montipora coral skeletons will lose on average 15 kg CaCO3 m􀀀2 y􀀀1, which is approximately …

Competitive Market Research And Product Design, Haixiu Wang Nov 2014

Competitive Market Research And Product Design, Haixiu Wang

Lingnan Theses

To learn the uncertainty of customer preference on the attribute of new product, usually a firm needs to do market research. Developing a product on an attribute which is less preferred by customer may lead to a failure. In addition, a firm used to take efforts to design the product. In recent years, we observed a new business model in which the firm does not take effort to design new product, nor does she do market research by herself. She provides rewards to attract outside designers to design new product. Some designers may take effort and design products based on …

Chemistry Graduate Teaching Assistants' Experiences In Academic Laboratories And Development Of A Teaching Self-Image, Todd Adam Gatlin Nov 2014

Chemistry Graduate Teaching Assistants' Experiences In Academic Laboratories And Development Of A Teaching Self-Image, Todd Adam Gatlin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) play a prominent role in chemistry laboratory instruction at research based universities. They teach almost all undergraduate chemistry laboratory courses. However, their role in laboratory instruction has often been overlooked in educational research. Interest in chemistry GTAs has been placed on training and their perceived expectations, but less attention has been paid to their experiences or their potential benefits from teaching.

This work was designed to investigate GTAs' experiences in and benefits from laboratory instructional environments. This dissertation includes three related studies on GTAs' experiences teaching in general chemistry laboratories. Qualitative methods were used for each …

Transmedial Documentation For Non-Visual Image Access, Melody J. Mccotter Nov 2014

Transmedial Documentation For Non-Visual Image Access, Melody J. Mccotter

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In my doctoral studies on information accessibility for the individual who is blind or visually impaired, I’ve been exploring the ways we can make image documents more accessible. This requires using an alternative sensory modality, and translating the document into a different format. The questions that arise when we consider this process are many, but among them are:

  • Is it the same document once we’ve converted it to an audio narrative about the work, or a 3D topographic map of an artwork, or a musical interpretation?
  • If it is not the same document, how truthful can the “trans-medial” translation be …

Can Xrf Scanning Of Speleothems Be Used As A Non-Destructive Method To Identify Paleoflood Events In Caves?, Martin Finné, Malin Kylander, Meighan Boyd, Hanna S. Sundqvist, Ludvig Löwemark

International Journal of Speleology

We have developed a novel, quick and non-destructive method for tracing flood events in caves through the analysis of a stalagmite thick section with an XRF core scanner. The analyzed stalagmite has multiple horizons of fine sediments from past flood events intercalated with areas of cleaner calcite. Flood events detected from the elemental XRF core scanning data show good agreement with the position of flood horizons identified in petrographic thin sections. The geochemical composition of the individual flood layers shows that in certain cases the clay horizons had a distinct geochemical fingerprint suggesting that it may be possible to distinguish …

Microstratigraphic Logging Of Calcite Fabrics In Speleothems As Tool For Palaeoclimate Studies, Silvia Frisia Nov 2014

Microstratigraphic Logging Of Calcite Fabrics In Speleothems As Tool For Palaeoclimate Studies, Silvia Frisia

International Journal of Speleology

The systematic documentation of calcite fabrics in stalagmites and flowstones provides robustness to palaeoclimate interpretation based on geochemical proxies, but it has been neglected because it is difficult to transform crystal morphologies into numerical values, and construct fabric time series. Here, general criteria that allow for coding fabrics of calcite composing stalagmites and flowstones is provided. Being based on known models of fabric development, the coding ascribes sequential numbers to each fabric, which reflect climate-related parameters, such as changes in drip rate variability, bio-mediation or diagenetic modifications. Acronyms are proposed for Columnar types, Dendritic, Micrite, Microsparite and Mosaic fabrics, whose …
