Biological Processing Rhythms In Beginning Readers: A Spectrographic Examination Of Oral Reading Behavior On Texts Of Increasing Difficulty, Laura Juhl
Theses and Dissertations
A qualitative comparative research design grounded in the theory of biological processing rhythms (Holdaway, 1979, Miner, 1903) described oral reading behaviors in different levels of beginning early readers during oral reading of texts of increasing difficulty. Spectrographic analysis with waveform data triangulated with running record data, Slosson Oral Reading Tests (SORT-R3) (Slosson & Nicholson, 1990) and transcriptions allowed an in-depth analysis into the behaviors. Three research questions guided the analysis: (1) How do biological processing rhythms operate with different levels of beginning readers? (2) How do biological processing rhythms, as examined through waveforms of oral reading behavior, operate as beginning …
Overcoming Literacy Barriers Through Interventions: A Mixed Methods Study, Cynthia Whitfield Owens
Overcoming Literacy Barriers Through Interventions: A Mixed Methods Study, Cynthia Whitfield Owens
Theses and Dissertations
A convergent parallel mixed methods study was conducted to examine the effect of multiple layers of writing instruction for accelerating the literacy achievement of at-risk kindergarten students. Participants included 33 teachers and 151 kindergarten students from 9 schools. The effects of Treatment 2 Group (whole class, small-group writing instruction in the classroom, and Interactive Writing Intervention) and Treatment 1 Group (whole class and small-group writing instruction in the classroom) were compared to a Control Group (whole-class instruction). Additionally, a case study design with constant comparative analysis was used to examine the practices and instructional decisions of two expert intervention teachers …

Analyzing Flying Chameleons: Using Autoethnography To Explore Change In The Female Educator, Leslie Pourreau
Analyzing Flying Chameleons: Using Autoethnography To Explore Change In The Female Educator, Leslie Pourreau
The Qualitative Report
What is a chameleon in the world of education? What defines her professionally, personally, and why? In this autoethnography, I explore the chameleon metaphor for meanings and implications in my personal and professional identity as a female educator by seeking answers to questions stemming from Mitchell and Weber (2005): Just who do I think I am? Just who do I think I am? Just who do I think I am? Just who do I think I am? I analyzed my own autobiographical journals using the four-part Listening Guide (Gilligan, Spencer, Weinberg, & Bertsch, 2003) coupled with theme-based family coding to …

Digital Vs. Print: Reading Comprehension And The Future Of The Book, M. Julee Tanner
Digital Vs. Print: Reading Comprehension And The Future Of The Book, M. Julee Tanner
School of Information Student Research Journal
The future of books and libraries is put into question by the increasing popularity of e-books and the use of computers as text platforms. In an effort to anticipate which reading platform—print, e-readers, or computers displays—will dominate in the coming years, recent research and experimental data on the suitability of each reading platform for reading comprehension will be considered, from the perspectives of optical issues, cognition, and metacognition. It will be shown that, while printed books are most conducive to learning from longer, more difficult texts, e-readers and computer displays offer convenience and some distinct advantages to readers in particular …

The Religious Shaping Of Feeling: Implications Of Affect Valuation Theory, Jeanne L. Tsai, Birgit Koopmann-Holm, Masako Miyazaki, Cameron Ochs
The Religious Shaping Of Feeling: Implications Of Affect Valuation Theory, Jeanne L. Tsai, Birgit Koopmann-Holm, Masako Miyazaki, Cameron Ochs
Psychology
Over 80% of the world population identifies with a specific religion (Adherents. com, 2007; Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). For some individuals, this religion structures and shapes every dimension of their daily lives: what they wear, with whom they spend time, where they go, and what they eat. As important, but perhaps less overt, is how religion shapes people's psyches. Indeed, one of the major functions of religion is to provide followers with a way of understanding and coping with their life circumstances (see Pargament, Falb, Ano, & Wachholtz, Chapter 28, this volume; Park, 2005). Another is to provide a guide …
Bowling, Richard C. Crepeau
Bowling, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Every few years I like to take inventory of the Bowl Games. Each football season concludes with these loss leaders for intercollegiate football teams. Almost without exception teams who have been honored with an invitation to a bowl game will lose money with the cost of bowling exceeding the payouts for bowlers. The theory is that the exposure is worth more than real budgetary dollars.

The Act provides the Director of the Environmental Protection Division with flexibility in determining when and how to declare a drought and how to proceed in case of a drought. The Act no longer requires the Director to determine a drought status by a certain date or to conduct irrigation reduction auctions. The Act codifies the Director’s ability to implement augmentation projects and limit the ability of those with withdrawal permits to withdraw the augmented water for irrigation. The Act also creates irrigation efficiency requirements and sets forth a schedule requiring all irrigation systems to achieve eighty percent efficiency by …
Precarity And Possibility: On Being Young And Indigenous In Sikkim, India, Mabel D. Gergan
Precarity And Possibility: On Being Young And Indigenous In Sikkim, India, Mabel D. Gergan
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
In the last decade the Indian Power Ministry began an aggressive campaign for hydropower development in its ten Himalayan states. Twenty-nine of these dams were commissioned for construction in the small Eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim. In June 2007 Dzongu a protected reserve of the indigenous Lepchas in North Sikkim became the center of controversy when reserve youth went on a hunger strike against seven dams planned within the reserve. Their protests garnered enough national and international attention to cancel four of the seven dams. However within the reserve there was very little support for the activists who were seen …
Writers, Readers, And The Sharing Of Consciousness: Five Nepali Novels, Michael Hutt
Writers, Readers, And The Sharing Of Consciousness: Five Nepali Novels, Michael Hutt
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
In his seminal book Literature, Popular Culture and Society, Leo Lowenthal argues that studies of the representation of society, state, or economy in the literature of a particular country or time contribute to our knowledge of ‘the kind of perception which a specific social group—writers—has of specific social phenomena’ and therefore to our knowledge of the ‘history and sociology of shared consciousness’ (1961: 143). This discussion will focus on five Nepali novels published between 2005 and 2010, i.e. during the final months of the internal conflict between the CPN (Maoist) and the monarchical state, and the period of political transition …
Transfer Of Arabic Grammatical Knowledge To Spanish Subject-Verb Agreement, Jennifer Herzog
Transfer Of Arabic Grammatical Knowledge To Spanish Subject-Verb Agreement, Jennifer Herzog
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the field of second language acquisition (SLA), research has shown that one’s first language (L1) has proven to positively and negatively transfer to one’s second language (L2). A possible area of transfer is subject-verb agreement. Transfer becomes much more difficult when two languages utilize different writing scripts. What remains unknown, and what the present study aims to determine is if transfer of subject-verb agreement can occur between two languages that use different writing scripts. This study examines five L1 Arabic/English participants in their acquisition of Spanish subject-verb agreement by recording their reaction time for reading Spanish sentences with subject-verb …
Music Therapy And Communication Disabilities: Singing, Speech, And The Brain, Jennifer Drake
Music Therapy And Communication Disabilities: Singing, Speech, And The Brain, Jennifer Drake
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Music therapy interventions, especially singing, can aid those with communication disorders to attain and develop verbal and non-verbal communication and language skills, as well as functional social skills. Throughout my own interactions with those with communication impairments, I have witnessed many individuals who struggle with typical speech, but are better able to communicate when music is involved. For instance, a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who does not typically speak independently or when prompted is able to sing every word to familiar songs on the radio that he enjoys. Such evidence of the positive effect that music can …

An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis performs an empirical analysis of Word2Vec by comparing its output to WordNet, a well-known, human-curated lexical database. It finds that Word2Vec tends to uncover more of certain types of semantic relations than others -- with Word2Vec returning more hypernyms, synonomyns and hyponyms than hyponyms or holonyms. It also shows the probability that neighbors separated by a given cosine distance in Word2Vec are semantically related in WordNet. This result both adds to our understanding of the still-unknown Word2Vec and helps to benchmark new semantic tools built from word vectors.

Lisbeth Salander Lost In Translation - An Exploration Of The English Version Of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Kajsa Paludan
Lisbeth Salander Lost In Translation - An Exploration Of The English Version Of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Kajsa Paludan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This thesis sets out to explore the cultural differences between Sweden and the United States by examining the substantial changes made to Men Who Hate Women, including the change in the book’s title in English to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. My thesis focuses in particular on changes in the depiction of the female protagonist: Lisbeth Salander. Unfortunately we do not have access to translator Steven T. Murray’s original translation, though we know that the English publisher and rights holder Christopher MacLehose chose to enhance Larsson’s work in order to make the novel more interesting for English-speaking …
