'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd Jan 2014

'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd

Design Thinking Research Symposium

This paper explores assessment in graduate-level industrial design education. In particular, it considers how the assessment of students' design work is delivered and who delivers it. Through using aspects of conversation analysis to look in close-up detail at a number of short segments of tutor-student interaction, we consider how a tutor performs assessment himself and also coaches other students to assess, in ways that may significantly contribute to students' understanding of what assessment is and how it is to occur. Creating opportunities for students and instructors to reflect upon evaluation, and how it is performed, may better equip participants in …

Learning And Becoming In Design Reviews, Lisa D. Mcnair, Marie C. Paretti, Cassandra Groen Jan 2014

Learning And Becoming In Design Reviews, Lisa D. Mcnair, Marie C. Paretti, Cassandra Groen

Design Thinking Research Symposium

Drawing from the prior work of McNair and Paretti (2010), this study investigates how language practices and design artifacts mediate the interactions among novice and expert designers to shape the nature of design, and specifically design learning. By analyzing data collected from two design courses in different fields, this study addresses two research questions: 1) how do language practices mediate the interactions between design mentors and design learners; and 2) how do design artifacts mediate these interactions between mentors and learners? Drawing on activity theory and discourse analysis, we use these questions to explore how students work with experts to …

Mapping The World, Culture, And Border-Crossing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, I-Chun Wang Jan 2014

Mapping The World, Culture, And Border-Crossing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, I-Chun Wang

CLCWeb Library

Authors in the collected volume Mapping the World, Culture, and Border-crossing — edited by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and I-Chun Wang and published by National Sun Yat-sen University Press in 2010— begin with exploring theoretical premises about the processes and ramifications of cultural crossings to establish a clearly defined theoretical context for the case studies which follow. The case studies range from the creation of identity through patriotic songs in Taiwan under martial law, to nationality and Japanese identity, cultural autonomy in contemporary North America, Asian migration to Latin America, ethnic identity in the writings of Tan, Naipaul, Eliot, and …

Individual Sense Of Efficacy, Collective Teacher Efficacy And Student Achievement In High Achieving And Low Achieving Urban Public Schools, Stephanie Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between teachers' individual sense of efficacy, collective teacher efficacy, and student achievement in urban schools. The study surveyed teachers in high performing and low performing elementary schools in a single urban district in Southern California. Statistical analysis was conducted on survey responses from 76 teachers in low performing schools and 109 teachers in high performing schools. Using the Ohio State Teacher Efficacy Survey, teacher efficacy was separated into three subcategories: student engagement, instructional practices and classroom management. The data findings revealed that teachers in high performing schools had higher teacher efficacy in all three areas, …

Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs) And Completion Rates: Are Self-Directed Adult Learners The Most Successful At Moocs?, Amanda Sue Schulze Jan 2014

Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs) And Completion Rates: Are Self-Directed Adult Learners The Most Successful At Moocs?, Amanda Sue Schulze

Theses and Dissertations

Millions of adults have registered for massive open online courses, known as MOOCs, yet little research exists on how effective MOOCs are at meeting the needs of these learners. Critics of MOOCs highlight that their completion rates can average fewer than 5% of those registered. Such low completion rates raise questions about the effectiveness of MOOCs and whether adults enrolling in them have the skills and abilities needed for success. MOOCs have the potential to be powerful change agents for universities and students, but it has previously been unknown whether these online courses serve more than just the most persistent, …

Ethnic Differences In Delusional Content In Schizophrenia: A Comparative Analysis Of Delusional Symptoms In Individuals Of White European Descent And Latino Descent, Jessica A. Valluzzi

Theses and Dissertations

Although the phenomenon of psychosis in schizophrenia has been extensively studied, limited attention has been paid to the relationship of ethnicity/culture and the form and quality of psychotic symptoms. It is widely assumed that culture significantly influences the phenomenology of mental illness. Psychotic experiences, such as delusions and hallucinations, are likely no exception. There is a relatively small body of literature on cross-cultural differences in delusional symptoms that has yielded mixed findings. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the literature by examining potential differences in delusional symptoms among 2 cultural groups of schizophrenia patients: individuals of Latino …

Characteristics Of Transformative Listening Enacted By Organization Development Practitioners, Marco Cassone Jan 2014

Characteristics Of Transformative Listening Enacted By Organization Development Practitioners, Marco Cassone

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the listening behaviors of organization development (OD) practitioners that result in client transformation. Interviews conducted with eleven OD consultants with extensive experience in executive coaching pointed to engaged, focused attention as a core characteristic of their listening. OD practitioners regularly use three primary listening approaches (active, empathetic, and expansive listening) to drive insight and help clients transform their perspectives. Practitioners subsequently use two secondary listening approaches (critical and reductive listening) to anchor insight into action and help clients transform their behavior. Transformative listening describes the repeating process of inquiry that blends primary and secondary listening approaches and …

Legal Status And The Criminal Activity Of Immigrants, Giovanni Mastrobuoni, Paolo Pinotti Jan 2014

Legal Status And The Criminal Activity Of Immigrants, Giovanni Mastrobuoni, Paolo Pinotti

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We exploit exogenous variation in legal status following the January 2007 European Union enlargement to estimate its effect on immigrant crime. We difference out unobserved time-varying factors by 1) comparing recidivism rates of immigrants from the “new” and “candidate” member countries and 2) using arrest data on foreign detainees released upon a mass clemency that occurred in Italy in August 2006. The timing of the two events allows us to set up a difference-in-differences strategy. Legal status leads to a 50 percent reduction in recidivism and explains one-half to two-thirds of the observed differences in crime rates between legal and …

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen Jan 2014

Contemporary Aesthetics: Perspectives On Times, Space And Content, Ossi Naukkarinen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What is contemporary aesthetics? The answer to this question is often simply stated rather than carefully elaborated, even if the current nature and scope of the discipline is far from self-evident. To examine how both the concept and the field of contemporary aesthetics can be understood, I suggest that it is useful to consider three themes: the time, space, and content of aesthetics, i.e., the questions of when, where, and what contemporary aesthetics is. Through this, it is possible to construe a conceptual space of contemporary aesthetics and to compare different instantiations of it with each other.

'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe Jan 2014

'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe

The Bridge

When we say in English that a certain innovation "takes place" or in Danish: finder sted, which means literally, "finds place" -both linguistic idioms, "takes" or "finds" place, suggest that the role of place is not accidental. This is obviously pivotal in geography, but also in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and a host of cultural studies, sometimes in the form of "mental geography." Recent Danish book titles suggest as much: Dan Ringgaard's Stedssans (Sense of Place), Anne-Marie Mai's Hvor litteraturen finder sted (Where literature Takes Place) in 3 volumes, and Ringgaard & Mai's anthology Sted (Place).

After Recess: Historical Practice, Textual Ambiguity, And Constitutional Adverse Possession, Curtis A. Bradley, Neil S. Siegel Jan 2014

After Recess: Historical Practice, Textual Ambiguity, And Constitutional Adverse Possession, Curtis A. Bradley, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Recess Appointments Clause in NLRB v. Noel Canning stands as one of the Supreme Court’s most significant endorsements of the relevance of “historical gloss” to the interpretation of the separation of powers. This Article uses the decision as a vehicle for examining the relationship between interpretive methodology and historical practice, and between historical practice and textual ambiguity. As the Article explains, Noel Canning exemplifies how the constitutional text, perceptions about clarity or ambiguity, and “extra-textual” considerations such as historical practice operate interactively rather than as separate elements of interpretation. The decision also provides a …

The Effect Of Global English On Culture And Identity In The Uae: A Double-Edged Sword, Sarah Hopkyns Jan 2014

The Effect Of Global English On Culture And Identity In The Uae: A Double-Edged Sword, Sarah Hopkyns

All Works

The United Arab Emirates' complex history, its current demographics, its youthfulness as a country, and the fact that it is a region undergoing fast-paced change make the issue of cultural identity particularly relevant and urgent in this part of the world. This is especially true given the rapid spread of English in the sphere of education and everyday life in recent years. This paper discusses the above issues before analyzing the attitudes and perceptions of female Emirati university students and female Emirati primary school teachers with regard to global English and its effects on local culture and identity. After analysis …

Investigating A Win, Win Situation: Delivering Quality Swimming Experiences For Children In Local Primary Schools Within The Gippsland Region, Via Teacher Education., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the “commitment to action” designed by ministers of education, which act as stepping stones during implementation of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. The reflection conceptualises what these goals look like in practice within the Health and Physical Education (HPE) key learning area. “Swimming and water safety” for both pre-service teachers and children in Primary schools was implemented, which in hindsight provided a win-win situation. Furthermore, a framework enabling sustainable swimming education within the Gippsland rural community was developed. There were barriers to be overcome and amendments identified …

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Free Markets: Alec's Populist Constructions Of "The People" In State Politics, Anne Sherwood Jan 2014

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Free Markets: Alec's Populist Constructions Of "The People" In State Politics, Anne Sherwood

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, has been championing neoliberal and neoconservative bills relatively unnoticed in statehouses across the country for years. Using the populist frame, I contend that ALEC creates a new subject position for its corporate and legislative members as small business owners and virtuous entrepreneurs. This rhetoric is also on display in Wisconsin, where Governor Scott Walker utilizes populist rhetoric to constitute "the people" as workers.
