Exploring The Explanatory Power Of Semitic And Egyptian In Uto-Aztecan, Dirk Elzinga, David Eddington Jan 2014

Exploring The Explanatory Power Of Semitic And Egyptian In Uto-Aztecan, Dirk Elzinga, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

The factors that influence English speakers to classify a consonant as ambisyllabic are explored in 581 bisyllabic words. The /b/ in habit, for example, was considered ambisyllabic when a participant chose hab as the first part of the word and bit as the second. Geminate spelling was found to interact with social variables; older participants and more educated speakers provided more ambisyllabic responses. The influence of word-level phonotactics on syllabification was also evident. A consonant such as the medial /d/ in standard is attested as the second consonant in the coda of many English words (e.g. lard), as well …

Empirical Validation Of Listening Proficiency Guidelines, Troy L. Cox, Ray Clifford Jan 2014

Empirical Validation Of Listening Proficiency Guidelines, Troy L. Cox, Ray Clifford

Faculty Publications

Because listening has received little attention and the validation of ability scales describing multidimensional skills is always challenging, this study applied a multistage, criterion‐referenced approach that used a framework of aligned audio passages and listening tasks to explore the validity of the ACTFL and related listening proficiency guidelines. Rasch measurement and statistical analyses of data generated in seven separate language studies resulted in significant differences in listening difficulty between the proficiency levels tested and confirmed the validity of the ACTFL proficiency assessment for listening.

Language Use In Six Study Abroad Programs: An Exploratory Analysis Of Possible Predictors, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen, Carrie Gold, Dennis Eggett

Faculty Publications

A common predictor of language gains during study abroad (SA) is amount of language use. Yet little attention has been given to determining what factors influence the extent of language use while abroad. Studies in this area have mainly been case studies of learners in single locations. In this larger study, we seek to determine variables connected with language use by examining 118 learners studying abroad in Madrid, Merida (Mexico), Paris, Moscow, Nanjing, or Cairo. These learners reported their second language (L2) use over a 1-week period during their stay. Significant predictors of reported L2 use include SA program, age, …

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie Jan 2014

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie

Faculty Publications

Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.

Post-Racial Proxy Battles Over Immigration, Mary D. Fan Jan 2014

Post-Racial Proxy Battles Over Immigration, Mary D. Fan

Chapters in Books

Amid economic and political turmoil, anti-immigrant legislation has flared again among a handful of fiercely determined states. To justify the intrusion into national immigration enforcement, the dissident states invoke imagery of invading hordes of “illegals”—though the unauthorized population actually fell by nearly two-thirds, decreasing by about a million people, between 2007 and 2009 as the recession reduced the lure of jobs.

Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070—recently invalidated in part by the U.S. Supreme Court in Arizona v. United States—led the charge. By preelection-year summer 2011, several states enacted laws patterned after Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070, including Alabama’s even more aggressive …

Accentuation, Dieter Gunkel Jan 2014

Accentuation, Dieter Gunkel

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

The accent marks in modern editions of Ancient Greek texts primarily reflect the accentual system of an educated register of the Koine of the early 2nd c. BCE. In this system, phonological, morphological, and lexical factors conspire to associate a pitch accent with one syllable of each lexical word. The phonology of the language permits limited contrasts in accentual position (λιθοβόλος vs. λιθόβολος = lithobólos vs. lithóbolos) and type (ἰσθμοί vs. ἰσθμοῖ = isthmói ̯ vs. isthmôi)̯; in the latter case, the syllable marked with an acute accent hosts a High tone, and that marked with a circumflex hosts a …

Cultural Imaginary, The Rule Of Law, And (Post-) Colonialism In Indonesia: Perspectives From Pramoedya Ananta Toer's This Earth Of Mankind, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

This article focuses on culture and rule of law in Indonesia, which provides an excellent case study in colonialism and post-colonialism. The colonial heritage of Indonesia goes back to the early 1500’s until independence was declared in August 1945. This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is an appropriate text because it concerns the struggle of a Native Indonesian with various colonial institutions at the turn of the 19th Century through the eyes of an author who lived through colonial rule, Japanese occupation, and liberation. This article begins with a framework for analysis of the cultural imaginary based on …

Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Of Teachers And Student Academic Achievement, David Allen Rust Jan 2014

Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Of Teachers And Student Academic Achievement, David Allen Rust

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Linda Darling-Hammond (1997) states that the classroom teacher is the most influential variable influencing student achievement outside of the child’s home environment. Many studies have attempted to identify the specific attributes of teachers who are more effective than others. During the last decade, research has shown that teachers who work to develop relationships, while delivering relevant and rigorous instruction, demonstrate greater student achievement.

Additional studies from the world of business tell us that those individuals with increased levels of emotional intelligence are better leaders, managers and salespersons, and are more frequently hired into those positions by large corporations. They are …

The African Economic Partnership Agreements With The Eu: Reflections Inspired By The Case Of The East African Community☆, Jaime De Melo, Julie Regolo Jan 2014

The African Economic Partnership Agreements With The Eu: Reflections Inspired By The Case Of The East African Community☆, Jaime De Melo, Julie Regolo

Journal of African Trade

This paper appraises the likely effects of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the East African Community (EAC) and the European Union (EU). Customs data are used to estimate the revenue and welfare effects of an EPA with and without an exception list. Revenue and welfare effects are rather small. The paper then discusses the benefits that would have occurred had the EAC-EU protocol on rules of origin been simplified and made more compatible with the multilateral trading system. An inclusion of services would have also helped achieve the objective of increased competitiveness in goods trade, while the time table …

Writing Development Of Spanish-English Bilingual Students With Language Learning Disabilities, Robin L. Danzak, Elaine R. Silliman

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

This chapter addresses Spanish-speaking, English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States (U.S.) who are sequential bilinguals; that is, oral and written English is acquired as a second language (L2) at school. Within this population, substantial variation exists with regard to individual students’ language and literacy learning experiences. The specific focus here is the writing patterns of ELLs with atypical language development, who often present with multiple complexities in authenticating their language learning profiles in both Spanish and English.

The Preservation And Rejuvenation Of Aggregate Litigation: A Systemic Imperative, Arthur R. Miller Jan 2014

The Preservation And Rejuvenation Of Aggregate Litigation: A Systemic Imperative, Arthur R. Miller

Emory Law Journal

Forgive me if I begin on an autobiographical note. Approximately fifty-five years ago I was a young lawyer transitioning into academe when I became indentured¿enthusiastically, I admit¿to my professional father, procedure teacher, and summer employer following my second law school year, Professor Benjamin Kaplan, of the Harvard Law School. He was then the Reporter for the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States. Through a series of byzantine circumstances, I became an informal assistant reporter. I was then the Associate Director of the Columbia Law School Project on International Procedure, and one of my …

(2014) Dialogic Schooling, David K. Kennedy Jan 2014

(2014) Dialogic Schooling, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

This paper offers a genealogy of dialogic education, tracing its origins in Romantic epistemology and corresponding philosophy of childhood, and identifying it as a counterpoint to the purposes and assumptions of universal, compulsory, state-imposed and regulated schooling. Dialogic education has historically worked against the grain of standardized mass education, not only in its view of the nature, capacities and potentialities of children (and therefore of adults as well), but in its economic, political and social views, for which childhood is understood as a promissory condition. Dialogic education is oriented to what Dewey called “a future new society of changed purposes …

Intensive Treatment Of Dysarthria In An Adult With A Traumatic Brain Injury, Jaclyn Scheimer Jan 2014

Intensive Treatment Of Dysarthria In An Adult With A Traumatic Brain Injury, Jaclyn Scheimer

Open Access Master's Theses

Objective: This study investigated the impact of an intensive articulation treatment on acoustic and perceptual measures of speech in an individual with spastic dysarthria acquired from a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Method: A single-subject A-B-A-A experimental design was used to measure the effects of an intensive articulation treatment that incorporated principles of motor learning to evaluate the impact on speech and communication. The primary dependent variables were single word intelligibility and vowel space area. Additional dependent variables included vocal sound pressure level (dB SPL) during a variety of speech tasks, acoustic measures of voice, and listener perceptual ratings …

Seeking Survival, Justice, And Recovery: Citizen Critics’ Therapeutic Interpretation Of Alice Sebold’S Lucky, Sarah Stone Watt Jan 2014

Seeking Survival, Justice, And Recovery: Citizen Critics’ Therapeutic Interpretation Of Alice Sebold’S Lucky, Sarah Stone Watt

All Faculty Open Access Publications

This essay explores reader reviews of Alice Sebold’s memoir, Lucky, which describes her rape in college while simultaneously employing and confronting dominant rape scripts. Even so, reviews of the memoir on Amazon.com employ a therapeutic interpretation of the story that emphasizes Sebold’s ability to survive, seek justice, and recover. I argue that readers’ reliance on therapeutic rhetoric reinforces the myth that rape is a problem for individual women, rather than society as a whole, and reflects an ongoing barrier to the success of feminist anti-rape efforts.

The Changing Discourse Of The Supreme Court, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2014

The Changing Discourse Of The Supreme Court, Stephen M. Johnson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Academics, judges, and other commentators complain that, for the past few decades, the Justices on the Supreme Court have been increasingly writing opinions that are unreadable for most American citizens. Those critics complain that the opinions are too long and too complex, riddled with incomprehensible multi-part tests. They also attack the style of the opinions and assert that recent opinions are more likely to be written in a technocratic, rather than persuasive, style.

There seems to be little consensus among the critics regarding why the Justices are writing opinions that are increasingly unreadable. Some attribute it to the increasing …

Songs You Know By Heart: Alcohol, Promiscuous Sex, Drugs, And Escape In Jimmy Buffett’S Music, Eve M. Brank, Kathleen A. Fox, Victoria Kaspar

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Some researchers argue singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s lyrics focus on alcohol, promiscuous sex, and drugs, while others say Buffett’s music has changed since he sold out to corporate sponsorship. Results from a systematic coding of all 386 of his songs released since 1969 indicate Buffett’s music is more about escape and irony than deviant behaviors. Furthermore, lyric themes remain largely unaltered even through an increase in his popularity and corporate sponsorship.

The Impact Of Texting On Committed Romantic Relationships, Danielle M. Maurer Jan 2014

The Impact Of Texting On Committed Romantic Relationships, Danielle M. Maurer

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The availability and affordability of mobile phones has increased dramatically in the last decade and continues to increase. Short-message service (texting), a popular feature of the mobile phone, has become a widely accepted phenomenon in today's society, and is beginning to dominate the landscape of interpersonal communication, used as a primary medium in romantic and sexual correspondence. There is minimal academic research focusing on the effects of texting on communication and social behavior within romantic relationships; research is lacking with regard to how mobile phone communication changes throughout the romantic relationships. The current study explores how texting practices are related …

Institutional Autonomy And Constitutional Structure, Randy J. Kozel Jan 2014

Institutional Autonomy And Constitutional Structure, Randy J. Kozel

Journal Articles

This Review makes two claims. The first is that Paul Horwitz’s excellent book, "First Amendment Institutions," depicts the institutionalist movement in robust and provocative form. The second is that it would be a mistake to assume from its immersion in First Amendment jurisprudence (not to mention its title) that the book's implications are limited to the First Amendment. Professor Horwitz presents First Amendment institutionalism as a wide-ranging theory of constitutional structure whose focus is as much on constraining the authority of political government as it is on facilitating expression. These are the terms on which the book's argument — and, …

Mythologizing Change: Examining Rhetorical Myth As A Strategic Change Management Discourse, Jacob D. Rawlins Jan 2014

Mythologizing Change: Examining Rhetorical Myth As A Strategic Change Management Discourse, Jacob D. Rawlins

Faculty Publications

This article explores how rhetorical myth can be used as a tool for persuading employees to accept change and to maintain consensus during the process. It defines rhetorical myth using three concepts: chronographia (a rhetorical interpretation of history), epideictic prediction (defining a present action by assigning praise and blame to both past and future), and communal markers (using Burkean identification and rhetorically defined boundary objects to define a community). The article reports on a 3-year ethnographic study that documents the development of a rhetorical myth at Iowa State University’s Printing Services department as it underwent changes to its central software …
