The Evolution Of The Villain In American Cinema, Kelsey Mcclure Apr 2014

The Evolution Of The Villain In American Cinema, Kelsey Mcclure

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

The villain character has evolved greatly throughout American cinema. Post World War II, the evolution is most striking by comparing films from the 1950s, 1970s, and 2000s. With a selection of four movies from each respective decade, the villains will be contrasted to identify any similarities and differences across decades to determine if the political environment has an impact on the way in which the villain character is portrayed.

Objective:

The purpose of this project was for me to determine if villains were constructed based on views of the American people at the times in which the films were created. …

Safety Policy And Procedure In Ohio High School Basketball, Issa Walker Apr 2014

Safety Policy And Procedure In Ohio High School Basketball, Issa Walker

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

There are projected to be seven million high school adolescents from roughly 20,000 high schools who partake in local sports programs annually. Children and adolescents are increasingly participating in sports, and this expanding involvement brings forth issues regarding possible risks of sports-related injury (Vanderlei et al. 2013). Although the involvement in sports is proven to be advantageous for the physical and mental well-being of human beings, injury rates are a public health concern. In the United States, young athletes are responsible for more than two million injuries, 500,000 physician visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations per year (Centers for Disease Control & …

Single But Not Alone: The Journey From Stigma To Collective Identity Through Himachal’S Single Women’S Movement, Kim Berry Apr 2014

Single But Not Alone: The Journey From Stigma To Collective Identity Through Himachal’S Single Women’S Movement, Kim Berry

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Across the northwestern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, never-married, divorced, separated, abandoned and widowed women have joined together across differences of caste, class, ethnicity and region to organize as members of Ekal Nari Shakti Sangathan (the Association of Empowered Single Women). Until recently the term single woman (ekal nari) was rarely, if ever, used locally to describe a particular woman’s circumstances of living outside the institution of marriage. Yet since the emergence of Ekal Nari Shakti Sangathan (ENSS) in Himachal Pradesh in 2005, over 9,000 women have become dues-paying members of the organization, re-identifying as single women, and struggling collectively …

Catalonia: The Quest For Independence From Spain, Anastazia Marinzel Apr 2014

Catalonia: The Quest For Independence From Spain, Anastazia Marinzel

Senior Honors Projects

This paper aims to explore the reasons behind the secessionist movement and the possibility of rearranging the borders of Spain to allow for an independent Catalonian state. Based upon my findings, I do not believe that Catalonia will be granted independence from the rest of Spain, although increasing pressure from Catalans will test this thesis over time.

Motivating English Language Learners: An Indonesian Case Study, Rebekah Nichols Apr 2014

Motivating English Language Learners: An Indonesian Case Study, Rebekah Nichols

Master of Education Program Theses

Motivation is a complex issue, especially when considered in the Asian context, where passive learning and teacher-centered lessons dominate. This study attempted to identify student-preferred motivational strategies that would correlate to increased attention and engagement among and increased levels of intrinsic motivation in Chinese Indonesian students in a Year 12 English classroom. Student surveys indicated preferences for the use of audiovisual material and the use of collaborative reading quizzes. The implementation of these strategies resulted in positive levels of attention and engagement in the classroom, but no increase in levels of intrinsic motivation were observed.

The Edward Bliss Emerson Journal Project: Qualitative Research By A Non-Hierarchical Team, José G. Rigau-Pérez, Silvia E. Rabionet, Annette B. Ramírez De Arellano, Wilfredo A. Géigel, Alma Simounet, Raúl Mayo-Santana

The Qualitative Report Books

Edward Bliss Emerson (1805-1834), a younger brother of the renowned essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, lived in the Caribbean for the final three years of his life. His journal and letters are a rich manuscript source for the history of the Danish Virgin Islands (1831-1832) and Puerto Rico (1831-1834). The texts also reflect the contemporary political and cultural situation in the United States, and Edward's search for health, economic independence, intellectual stimulation and metaphysical fulfillment.

These writings ignited an intellectual passion in José G. Rigau-Pérez, a physician, medical epidemiologist, and historian in Puerto Rico. Furthering access to these unique …

Making Spelling Meaningful: Using Explicit Instruction And Individual Conferencing, Anna H. Hall Apr 2014

Making Spelling Meaningful: Using Explicit Instruction And Individual Conferencing, Anna H. Hall

Publications

This article challenges traditional modes of spelling instruction by offering theoretically based suggestions for effectively assessing and instructing students’ spelling progress. The importance of explicit spelling instruction is presented along with differentiated strategies for students along the developmental spelling continuum and an individualized way to monitor spelling progress for elementary school students. Furthermore, the article seeks to provide teachers with strategies that help students develop an understanding of orthographic patterns and phonemic awareness skills while simultaneously avoiding the traditional “Friday Spelling Test” that so often dominates the elementary spelling curriculum.

Comparative Analysis Of Requirements Change Prediction Models: Manual, Linguistic, And Neural Network, Beshoy Markos, James L. Mathieson, Joshua D. Summers Apr 2014

Comparative Analysis Of Requirements Change Prediction Models: Manual, Linguistic, And Neural Network, Beshoy Markos, James L. Mathieson, Joshua D. Summers

All CEDAR Publications

Requirement change propagation, if not managed, may lead to monetary losses or project failure. The a posteriori tracking of requirement dependencies is a well-established practice in project and change management. The identification of these dependencies often requires manual input by one or more individuals with intimate knowledge of the project. Moreover, the definition of these dependencies that help to predict requirement change is not currently found in the literature. This paper presents two industry case studies of predicting system requirement change propagation through three approaches: manually, linguistically, and bag-of-words. Dependencies are manually and automatically developed between requirements from textual data …

Ethos And Narrative Interpretation, Liesbeth Korthals Altes Apr 2014

Ethos And Narrative Interpretation, Liesbeth Korthals Altes

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Ethos and Narrative Interpretation examines the fruitfulness of the concept of ethos for the theory and analysis of literary narrative. The notion of ethos refers to the broadly persuasive effects of the image one may have of a speaker’s psychology, world view, and emotional or ethical stance. How and why do readers attribute an ethos (of, for example, sincerity, reliability, authority, or irony) to literary characters, narrators, and even to authors? Are there particular conditions under which it is more appropriate for interpreters to attribute an ethos to authors, rather than to narrators? In the answer Liesbeth Korthals Altes proposes …

A Reinterpretation Of The Dao De Jing, Tianyue Luo Apr 2014

A Reinterpretation Of The Dao De Jing, Tianyue Luo

Senior Theses

Next to the Bible, the Dao De Jing is the most translated work in world literature. Its popularity certainly shows the power of traditional Chinese thoughts. Late western modern philosophers, such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Sartre have been influenced by the thoughts of Dao De Jing. As a foundation of traditional Chinese spirit, the Dao De Jing certainly played a key role. In the new global temporality, it may also help people to eliminate the philosophical, ideological, and eventually the cultural gap as a cultural bridge between the east and west. Compared to the original source, most English references …

A Look Into Current Reading Instructional Practices: Close Reading Versus Guided Reading, Amanda Robinson Apr 2014

A Look Into Current Reading Instructional Practices: Close Reading Versus Guided Reading, Amanda Robinson

Education Masters

This study compared how students comprehended text with a close reading versus a guided reading approach. Research was conducted with three fifth grade students. Data was analyzed on performance while participating in a close reading lesson and in a small group guided reading lesson. I found it is easier to identify skills students need support in in guided reading lessons, struggling readers feel more comfortable with text at their instructional level and teachers are untrusting in whole group close reading lessons. My implications encourage teachers to attend professional development on implementation of close reading lessons, collaboration of creating critical thinking …

A Look At Home Literacy Experiences And Parental Support: A Case Study, Stephanie Bullock Apr 2014

A Look At Home Literacy Experiences And Parental Support: A Case Study, Stephanie Bullock

Education Masters

The action research study is a case study looking to identify the home literacy practices that encourage parent involvement and best support the literacy development of a kindergarten student. Children require a literacy-rich home environment where a parent’s involvement engages the child in meaningful literacy events. Through seven home visits where the mother and child were observed during literacy-based interactions, it was found that parent involvement and the strategies employed at home effect literacy development. Teachers and schools need to break the barriers in place which make it difficult to support parents. There should be a focus on how to …

Overcoming The “Dual-Delivery” Stigma: A Review Of Patient-Centeredness In The Costa Rica Medical Tourism Industry, Alicia Mason

Faculty Submissions

Due to the growing globalization of health care and an increase in access to technology many consumers are utilizing the World Wide Web for securing medical services abroad, a phenomenon commonly known as medical tourism. The current investigation employs an emic cultural approach for analyzing the Western concept of patient-centeredness within several public and private medical facilities within Costa Rica. Through a detailed field investigation and personal interviews with directors of Costa Rica’s largest accrediting institutions (AAAAF and ProMed), hospital organizations, and private health clinics an interpretative framework for evaluating patient-centeredness and quality of care is offered. Discussion, implications, and …

Small Migrant Nonprofit Organizations: Leadership Approaches That Connect To The Country Of Origin, Josephat Makori Nyangau

Theses and Graduate Projects

As a Kenya migrant who has observed leaders of migrant organizations play a great role both in country of origin and their host, I was motivated to undertake this study to find out the approaches migrant leaders use to connect to their country of origin. This study aimed to review literature on small migrant nonprofit organizations with emphasis on Kenyan registered migrant nonprofit organizations in Minnesota. Other migrant organizations were also explored to help bridge the gap in the literature. The literature review conducted found few registered migrant nonprofit organizations of Kenyan descent in the Minnesota registry based on their …

Finding Data: The Politics And Magic Of Accessing Capital Punishment Data, Barbara O’Brien Apr 2014

Finding Data: The Politics And Magic Of Accessing Capital Punishment Data, Barbara O’Brien

2014 Conference Presentations

This talk provides an overview of the primary data sources for death penalty research and a glimpse at some of the limitations of working with these sources. Examining each stage of a capital prosecution—from the police investigation of a potentially capital murder to a governor’s decision to grant clemency sparing the life of a death-row inmate—is necessary to understand the process as a whole. But arbitrary factors like local politics, luck, and institutional legacies limit researchers’ ability to collect data about each decision point, making researchers’ attempts to follow cases across multiple stages exceptionally difficult.

Language As The House Of Being? How To Bring Intelligibility To Heidegger While Keeping The Excitement, Pol Vandevelde Apr 2014

Language As The House Of Being? How To Bring Intelligibility To Heidegger While Keeping The Excitement, Pol Vandevelde

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

At the core of Heidegger's philosophy, there lies this nagging question: what is the link between language and being? Using a famous formulation by Heidegger as a guide (‘When we go to the well, when we go through the woods, we are always already going through the word “well”, through the word “woods”’), the analysis focuses on the connection Heidegger establishes between being (what woods and well ‘are’), understanding (something is understood ‘as’ woods or well), and temporality (human understanding of woods and well has changed since ancient Greek times, for example). Language is both what grants things their way …
