Never Myles From The News: The 'Meta-Journalism' Of Myles Na Gcopaleen, Ian Kilroy
Never Myles From The News: The 'Meta-Journalism' Of Myles Na Gcopaleen, Ian Kilroy
Books/Book chapters
This chapter will interrogate and assess the substantial body of journalistic work of Irish novelist Brian O’Nolan, considered to be one of the founding fathers of the postmodern novel, as exemplified in his classic works At-Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman. Locating his satirical journalism in the context of the Swiftian tradition from which it stems, O’Nolan’s journalism will be read in the societal content in which it was produced: namely 1940s, 1950s and 1960s Ireland, decades in which the country was marked by widespread censorship, increased Church influence on the affairs of state, economic stagnation and sexual repression.

Study On The Documents Of Java In Siku Quanshu; Historical Knowledge And Historians' Point Of View, Nurni Wahyu Wuryandari
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The dissertation discusses various documents on Java collected in Siku Quanshu (Complete Library of Four Treasures). The documents used as the sources of this study are the ones with complete pictures and strong narration on Javanese recorded from Han Dynasty (206 bc-220 ad) to Ming Dynasty (1364-1644) in order to reveal what kind of historical knowledge or historical information is delivered by Chinese historians in general and what kind of point of view is used by historians to deliver the notes about Java. Through analytical reading, the readers will find that historians paid attention to three issues: the relationship between …
The Implementation And Outcomes Of One Georgia Two-Way Immersion Program, Marguerite Giménez
The Implementation And Outcomes Of One Georgia Two-Way Immersion Program, Marguerite Giménez
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
This case study examined the implementation of one elementary school’s Spanish- English two-way immersion program and its effectiveness as measured by test scores. Discussions with stakeholders at one school on a classroom and school level were also used to measure its perceived effectiveness. Two-way immersion is one option for federally mandated support for ELs. Through the lenses of sociocultural and critical theory, this study explored relationships and infrastructure within Creekview Elementary’s two-way immersion program and the purposes and outcomes of the program for English learners. Key findings suggest that the program operates with high levels of administrative support and teacher-to-teacher …

Youth Culture And Urban Pride; The Sociolinguistics Of East Javanese Slang, Tom G. Hoogervorst
Youth Culture And Urban Pride; The Sociolinguistics Of East Javanese Slang, Tom G. Hoogervorst
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study offers an overview of the characteristics and social functions of youth slang in the Indonesian province of East Java. It examines Boso Walikan and various types of Surabayan slang. Boso Walikan emerged in Malang as a secret language that was deliberately made unintelligible to outsiders. Over the decades, large parts of Malang's urban population developed proficiency in the language and appropriated it as an identity marker. The situation in nearby Surabaya is different. While lacking a uniform local slang comparable to that of Malang, several communities make an effort to differentiate themselves through specific linguistic habits, which are …
Language Development Of Bilingual Children; The Acquisition Of Tense And Aspect In An Italian-Indonesian Child: A Case Study, Antonia Soriente
Language Development Of Bilingual Children; The Acquisition Of Tense And Aspect In An Italian-Indonesian Child: A Case Study, Antonia Soriente
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper describes the development of temporal expressions in a bilingual child acquiring two typologically distinct languages: Italian and Indonesian. These languages differ from one another in the way tense and aspect are encoded and it is interesting to observe what kind of cross-linguistic influence one language system has on the other. Italian verbs are heavily inflected for person, number as well as for tense, aspect and mood, whereas, in Indonesian, the encoding of tense and aspect is lexical rather than morphological; moreover encoding is optional when the context is sufficiently clear. This means that tense and aspect in Indonesian …

The youth in Jakarta is Western (American) oriented, copying from the mass- and social media, often times conflicting with local norms and parental advices. Anak Jakarta profile …
Adolescent Social Media Interaction And Authorial Stance In Indonesian Teen Fiction, Dwi Noverini Djenar
Adolescent Social Media Interaction And Authorial Stance In Indonesian Teen Fiction, Dwi Noverini Djenar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article examines representations of adolescent social media interaction in two Indonesian teen novels to show how adolescent communication styles are typified. It is argued that public discourse on the potential danger of social media interaction is resounded in the novels. The article demonstrates that the authors of both novels take a similar moral stance on the issue of social media but use different rhetorical strategies for indexing that stance. Both draw on the social values of registers to communicate the stance. In Online addicted, standard Indonesian is used in narration to convey an authoritative voice and a stern moral …

Dark Sides Of Engaging In Fan Community Of Human Brand, Jeong Soo Han, Chung K. Kim, Mi Yea Kim, Jun, Jo Shua Y. Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
People enthusiastic about human brands eagerly engage in fan communities to share their common interests with others. Although sharing one``s enthusiasm towards the same celebrities can give them positive senses of we-ness (in-group identity, togetherness, camaraderie) and belongingness, negative sides also exist such as schadenfreude and trash talk. Even though the studies addressing the negative sides of fan community are gaining significance, no prior studies formally examined the negative consequences of engaging in a fan community and their effect on one``s well-being. Therefore, this current study aims to investigate how engaging in fan community negatively affects members`` psychological well-being through …
"Legless Birds": A Re-Examination Of The Motivating Factors Behind Hieroglyphic "Mutilation", Ashley R. Stanton
"Legless Birds": A Re-Examination Of The Motivating Factors Behind Hieroglyphic "Mutilation", Ashley R. Stanton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
It has often been assumed that the "mutilation" of animate hieroglyphic signs in ancient Egypt was meant to protect the deceased from harm in a tomb context. Using a semiotic perspective, this study will encourage a re-evaluation of this dominant explanation. The Egyptian hieroglyph can be interpreted on both iconic and symbolic levels, making a unilateral reading of any given sign unlikely. "Mutilation" has been expressed in many different ways throughout Egyptian history, from both outside and inside a funerary context, and to several different ends. This study will examine the "mutilation" of bird-signs in the late Middle Kingdom and …

A Gross Injustice: Proving Age Discrimination By Federal Employers Under The Adea In The Wake Of Gross V. Fbl Financial Services, Inc., Christine R. Lewis
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that the “but-for” causation required under Gross should not be extended to apply to ADEA claims brought against federal employers because the reasoning of Gross does not support a broad expansion of its holding, and because a less stringent burden of proof is more appropriate in the federal employment context. Part I explains the current requirements placed on a plaintiff bringing a § 623 ADEA claim against a nonfederal employer, as laid out by the Supreme Court in Gross. Part II explores the applicability of Gross to § 633a of the ADEA, which applies to …
A First Grade Teacher’S Implementation Of The Multicultural Read Aloud Lesson In Voices Reading: How Active Participatory Structure And Personal Relevance Are Used To Mediate Text Engagement, Kristen B. Doorn
Open Access Dissertations
This study focuses on the implementation of a multicultural, instructional read aloud lesson by a first grade teacher using the Voices Reading literacy curriculum during a six-week summer academic program for students at risk for academic failure who lived in a primarily black, low income, urban community in the southeastern region of the United States. The study examined how the teacher promoted an active participatory structure during the read aloud lesson and how this aspect of her teaching was guided by the curriculum and program context. The study used a case study approach to qualitative research (Creswell, 2006) and thematic …

The Frontiers Of Environmental Education: Understanding The Role Of Community-Based Organizations In The Socio-Ecological Learning Of Urban Youth, Katie L. Crosley
Open Access Dissertations
Contemporary environmental education in the U.S. seeks to help learners understand, negotiate, and advance solutions for complex socio-ecological issues. However, there has been growing evidence over the past 30 years that environmental education is not achieving this goal. Further, environmental education research has highlighted gaps in knowledge, theory, and methodology that have made understanding how environmental education impacts learners and learning in a variety of contexts difficult to grasp. To address these gaps, I engaged in an interdisciplinary mixed-method case-study, guided by civic ecology (Tidball & Krasny, 2010), of community-based organizations implementing environmental education programs for youth in Miami, FL. …
The Diathesis-Stress Model Of Corruption By The Ruling Ring: Nature, Power, And Exposure In J. R. R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Faith R. Holley
The Diathesis-Stress Model Of Corruption By The Ruling Ring: Nature, Power, And Exposure In J. R. R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Faith R. Holley
Student Scholarship
In J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the One Ring seems to exert power over some characters more than others. Though these differences could seem like an oversight or a lack of continuity, they also offer the opportunity to examine the effects of the differential power of the Ring. If the Ring is addictive, as Tom Shippey claims in The Road to Middle Earth, then it is possible to examine the etiology of addiction to the Ring (126). In this thesis, I present a psychological reading of Tolkien that relies on a modern psychological theory, namely the …

Mean Girls: Fact Or Media Fabrication? Constructing Female Adolescent Social Hierarchies Through Language Use, Meaghan Doyle
Mean Girls: Fact Or Media Fabrication? Constructing Female Adolescent Social Hierarchies Through Language Use, Meaghan Doyle
2014 Research Day Posters
Most research regarding language use has led to the conclusion that females are typically more cooperative and males are more aggressive. In the past decade there has been a prevalence of adolescent females being portrayed as more aggressive in the media, such as films like Mean Girls (2004). The problem with much of the research regarding language use as it relates to gender is that it has been centered on male-female interactions and little attention has been given to female-female interaction. This project serves to focus on the interactions between adolescent females in the United States as well as the …

Enacting Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Dual Language Bilingual Education Preschool Teachers' Coordinated Practices During Large Group Shared Book Readings, Ryan W. Pontier
Open Access Dissertations
This study examined the ways in which a pair of Spanish/English dual language bilingual education preschool teachers—one teacher who was designated as the model of Spanish and the other teacher the model of English—enacted their bilingualism as they worked cohesively and simultaneously to work toward common instructional goals. Dual language bilingual education is an instructional model wherein bilingualism is promoted among all students regardless of their level of bilingual proficiency, and in which students are instructed a significant amount of the day in a language other than English (García, 2013). Methodologically, I drew on classroom video data, field notes, and …
