Al'riq: The Arab Tambourine, Nathaniel Stottlemyer May 2014

Al'riq: The Arab Tambourine, Nathaniel Stottlemyer

Masters Theses

The riq (plural: riqat) is a small tambourine measuring 22cm - 25cm in diameter and approximately 5cm - 7cm in depth. The instrument consists of ten pairs of brass, bronze or copper jingles inserted equidistantly around the frame in two rows, held in place by metal pins. It is traditionally fitted with a natural skin head, usually fish, however modern riqat often utilize a variety of tuning systems, making the use of synthetic skins possible. Several names for the instrument exist historically. Historical variations of the riq appear frequently in Islamic art. The riq is performed with exceptional dynamic contrast …

Judicial Capacities And Patent Claim Construction: An Ordinary Reader Standard, Greg Reilly May 2014

Judicial Capacities And Patent Claim Construction: An Ordinary Reader Standard, Greg Reilly

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Patent claim construction is a mess. The Federal Circuit’s failure to provide adequate guidance has created significant problems for the patent system. The problems with claim construction result from the Federal Circuit’s inability to resolve whether claim terms should be given (1) the general, acontextual meaning they would have to a skilled person in the field; (2) the specific meaning they have in the context of the patent; or (3) some combination of the two. The claim construction debate largely overlooks the generalist judges who must implement claim construction. This Article fills that gap, concluding that existing approaches are difficult, …

Development Of A Personal Visioning Guidance System, Mariano Tosso May 2014

Development Of A Personal Visioning Guidance System, Mariano Tosso

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The primary intent of this project was to formulate a novel guidance system to help individuals gain clarity and understanding of their "inner vision" of a desired future state. My secondary goal was to enrich the palette of resources and tools available for coaching individuals in their discovery and crafting of personal and/or professional visions. Initially, I conducted an extensive literature review that inspired my approach. Then, I followed a process for assessing existing visioning tools and then imagining new opportunities to create, conceptualize, and craft at least five novel visioning tools.

The project outcome includes a Personal Visioning Guidance …

Readily Available, Ali Shamas Qadeer May 2014

Readily Available, Ali Shamas Qadeer

Masters Theses

Today, there is a massive framework in place to share and build ideas and information, and yet the status of the public domain is being eroded legally and ideologically. In the digital age, we are constantly creating datasets, leaving physical and ideological trails of whatever captures our attention and experience. However, massive, disorganized archives are prone to becoming unnavigable storehouses of information—or worse—privately traded commodities. In opposition to the idea of our lives as privately stored and sold as imaginary capital stands The Commons — the vast network of our collective cultural memory that is readily available to the public—at …

Events Of Assembly: Exploring The Terms Of Co-Production, Chloe Lee May 2014

Events Of Assembly: Exploring The Terms Of Co-Production, Chloe Lee

Masters Theses

Graphic designers, by nature, create sets of rules or conditions to establish relationships between disparate parts. The product graphic designers produce is thus an assembly of materials organized by these rules. In the context of our increasingly networked culture, there is an opportunity for graphic designers to reconsider how we orchestrate relationships. Rather than establishing conditions to make discrete objects as singular designers, this thesis proposes methods for generating new content and new form in collaboration with others.

Through rule-based design and trans-disciplinary collaboration, this body of work explores the terms of co-production. Using site-specific events, I assemble small networks …

Lost In Translation: Impediments To The Homogenous Interpretation Of Ifrs Translations, Addison N. Scott May 2014

Lost In Translation: Impediments To The Homogenous Interpretation Of Ifrs Translations, Addison N. Scott

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

In order to satisfy the financial needs of an increasingly globalized world, regulators and accounting professionals have pursued the harmonization of national accounting standards through International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). These standards have been adopted in more than 100 countries and are currently available in 47 languages. When financial information is prepared in accordance with IFRS, users of that information may assume that the application of the accounting rules is consistent across countries. In actuality, many differences in interpretation and application can occur because of the difficulties inherent in translating the standards from one language to another. Inconsistent application of …

Culturally Diverse And Underserved Populations Of Gifted Students In The United States And In Taiwan: Equitable Access To Gifted Education, Ya-Ting Ho May 2014

Culturally Diverse And Underserved Populations Of Gifted Students In The United States And In Taiwan: Equitable Access To Gifted Education, Ya-Ting Ho

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

There is a continuing increase in the African American and Hispanic student populations in public schools. The students who are invited to gifted programs are overwhelmingly White. This is the situation in schools in the United States and also in Taiwan. Misunderstanding or unawareness of culture difference among educators might contribute to underrepresentation of minority students in gifted programs. The research literature reviewed indicates that a deficit in orientation, ineffective teacher referral policies, and the use of culturally biased assessments are the major reasons responsible for low rates of identification for gifted minority students. The purpose of this thesis is …

The Importance Of Effectively Teaching Social Skills To Students With High-Functioning Autism, Michaela Elizabeth Mirsky May 2014

The Importance Of Effectively Teaching Social Skills To Students With High-Functioning Autism, Michaela Elizabeth Mirsky

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Due to this dramatic increase, the amount of children with high-functioning autism that have entered public schools across the United States has skyrocketed. Often times these children might have average IQs, but they often exhibit deficits in various social skills that can cause them to have difficulties in a variety of other areas. Research supports and emphasizes the importance of effectively teaching social skills to children with high-functioning autism. Because social functioning is a critical part of today’s society, …

Scientism, Satire, And Sacrificial Ceremony In Dostoevsky's "Notes From Underground" And C.S. Lewis's "That Hideous Strength", Jonathan Smalt May 2014

Scientism, Satire, And Sacrificial Ceremony In Dostoevsky's "Notes From Underground" And C.S. Lewis's "That Hideous Strength", Jonathan Smalt

Masters Theses

Though the nineteenth-century Victorian belief that science alone could provide utopia for man weakened in the epistemological uncertainty of the postmodern era, this belief still continues today. In order to understand our current scientific milieu--and the dangers of propagating scientism--we must first trace the rise of scientism in the nineteenth-century. Though removed, Fyodor Dostoevsky, in Notes From Underground (1864), and C.S. Lewis, in That Hideous Strength (1965), are united in their critiques of scientism as a conceptual framework for human residency. For Dostoevsky, the Crystal Palace of London's Great Exhibition (1862) embodied the nineteenth-century goal to found utopia through the …

The Heartland Of The Democracy: Presidential Politics In Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1860-64, Benjamin Petersheim May 2014

The Heartland Of The Democracy: Presidential Politics In Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1860-64, Benjamin Petersheim

Masters Theses

Oley Township, founded in 1740, in Berks County, Pennsylvania holds a special place in the commonwealth's history because of its unique religious, political, and cultural history. With hundreds of historic buildings and its Pennsylvania German heritage, the heart of the Oley Valley continues to attract colonial and Pennsylvania German historians from great distances so that they are able to analyze and research its rich heritage. Indeed, the area was designated as a National Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and much of the farmland has been preserved through land trusts and historical preservation efforts. Many …

De-Territorializing The Child : Towards A Theory Of Affect In Educational Philosophy And Research, Marta Pires May 2014

De-Territorializing The Child : Towards A Theory Of Affect In Educational Philosophy And Research, Marta Pires

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This dissertation explores the paradox between the normalizing and equalizing purpose of public education, stated in the rhetoric of policy and politics, and the social gaps it actually produces and perpetuates. The purpose of the study is to deterritorialize the ideal rational child of formal education and policy texts by juxtaposing it with the affective child found at the margin, outside of the rational regime of perception that permeates policy, and political discourse. I discuss what I believe are instances of children’s deterritorialized/ing experiences often missed, not only by formal education, but also by policy writers across the board, and …

Anthropology And Open Access, Jason B. Jackson, Ryan B. Anderson May 2014

Anthropology And Open Access, Jason B. Jackson, Ryan B. Anderson

Faculty Publications

While still largely ignored by many anthropologists, open access (OA) has been a confusing and volatile center around which a wide range of contentious debates and vexing leadership dilemmas orbit. Despite widespread misunderstandings and honest differences of perspective on how and why to move forward, OA frameworks for scholarly communication are now part of the publishing ecology in which all active anthropologists work. Cultural Anthropology is unambiguously a leading journal in the field. The move to transition it toward a gold OA model represents a milestone for the iterative transformation of how cultural anthropologists, along with diverse fellow travelers, communicate …

Contextualizing Subjectivity: Speaking (Back To) Colonialism In Jamaica Kincaid’S Annie John, Lucy, And A Small Place, Sierra Holmes May 2014

Contextualizing Subjectivity: Speaking (Back To) Colonialism In Jamaica Kincaid’S Annie John, Lucy, And A Small Place, Sierra Holmes

Masters Theses

The narrators of Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John, Lucy, and A Small Place all struggle to form a coherent sense of self while living within the colonial ideology that objectifies them and denies them identities as speaking subjects. In this thesis, Julia Kristeva’s theories of language and subject formation are used to explain why and how the narrators’ subjectivity is limited by colonial discourse. Particular attention is given to the way in which the narrators’ relationships with their mothers both threaten and necessitate their emergence into Kristeva’s symbolic order of language, and therefore into the colonial discourse community. The thesis also …

An A Priori And A Posteriori Analysis Of Usefulness Of Tem 8 And Toefl, Yuanjun Qi May 2014

An A Priori And A Posteriori Analysis Of Usefulness Of Tem 8 And Toefl, Yuanjun Qi

Masters Theses

The present study is dedicated to investigating the construct validity of two largescale English language tests, Test for English Majors - Band 8 (TEM 8) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In a priori validity research, a qualitative analysis of relevant test specifications and the blueprint of TEM 8 and TOEFL shows that TOEFL has a stronger construct validity evidence than TEM 8. There is overlap in construct definition between TEM 8 and TOEFL. In a posteriori validity research, the quantitative analysis of test scores obtained from 48 college junior English majors shows that both TEM 8 …

Theory And Practice Of Translation: An Original Translation Of Regina E. G. Schymiczek’S Die Weide Der Seepferde (The Pasture Of The Seahorses), Bradley J. Davey, Ralph W. Buechler May 2014

Theory And Practice Of Translation: An Original Translation Of Regina E. G. Schymiczek’S Die Weide Der Seepferde (The Pasture Of The Seahorses), Bradley J. Davey, Ralph W. Buechler

Honors College Theses

This study outlines the original translation of the recently published Die Weide der Seepferde (2013) from Regina E. G. Schymizcek. We employ known translation techniques by following Hervey’s (2006) suggested gradients of degrees of translation and cultural transposition. While translating the work we discovered a unique aspect of German-English translation which we believe fundamentally adds to knowledge of translation theory.

Investigating Secondary School Students’ Views Regarding The Use Of Strategies And Difficulties They Face When Writing In English As The Second Language, Salma Saeed Salem Al Kaabi

Curriculum and Instruction Theses

Learning writing is an important element in language acquisition. Writing is one of the tools of communication and exchanges between cultures. Many students have a negative attitude toward writing and consider writing as the most difficult skill of all. Writing in English is an issue from which many non-native students suffer. This study aims to investigate students' views toward the use of strategies and the challenges they face with writing in English.

This study was conducted in one of the large female high schools in Al Ain. A 45 items structured Likert-scale questionnaire was developed. It was administered to 360 …

A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating The Use Of Differentiated Instruction In A High School Art Classroom, Kristen Bartkowski May 2014

A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating The Use Of Differentiated Instruction In A High School Art Classroom, Kristen Bartkowski

Art Education Projects

The initial purpose of this study was to understand how one art teacher applied aspects of differentiated instruction in her art classroom. In the review of literature, I documented research and theories about differentiated instruction, which showed an overlap between theories of constructivism and differentiated instruction.

The methodology relied on a basic qualitative case study in which I played the role of participant as observer. Through the use of observation, interview, and document analysis, I sought to uncover aspects of differentiated instruction that one high school art teacher applied in her classroom over a period of twelve weeks for one …

Connecting With Families Of Poverty Handbook, Rebecca Christine Oren

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to create a handbook describing services available in the Sumner School District and researched based practices for elementary administrators and teachers to use when working with students and families of poverty. The McKinney-Vento Act in the United States protects families to ensure that all students have immediate access to school-linked services, including free breakfast and lunch, as well as transportation needs for getting to and from school. This handbook includes descriptions and contact information for local support organizations that administrators and teachers can additionally partner with to create supportive learning environments within their school …

Becoming-Teacher : The Negotiation Of Teaching Practice Of First-Year Secondary Science Teachers Prepared In A Hybrid Urban Teacher Education Program, Kathryn Jill Strom May 2014

Becoming-Teacher : The Negotiation Of Teaching Practice Of First-Year Secondary Science Teachers Prepared In A Hybrid Urban Teacher Education Program, Kathryn Jill Strom

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

While research suggests that new teachers work to put into practice the pedagogy learned from their preservice preparation programs during their first year of teaching, they often resort to traditional, teacher-centered pedagogies even when prepared to use innovative practices, particularly in urban schools. Relatively little is known, however, about how this process of perpetuating traditional teaching occurs. Using a theoretical framework informed by equity-minded pedagogy and rhizomatics, this study investigates the question, “Given their common experiences of preservice preparation in a hybrid urban teacher education program, how do three first-year teachers negotiate their preprofessional learning within their new environments as …

Ideology And Subversion: Linguistic Registers In Barbara Kingsolver’S The Poisonwood Bible, Natalie Wallace May 2014

Ideology And Subversion: Linguistic Registers In Barbara Kingsolver’S The Poisonwood Bible, Natalie Wallace

English

Effective colonial regimes have employed language to control and incapacitate their colonial subjects. However, anti-colonialist and Africanist authors have conversely used language as a significantly powerful tool in resisting colonial and neo-colonial discourses. Despite this subversive sentiment in contemporary literature about Africa, many scholars criticize Western authors, in particular, for their works about African nations, peoples, and struggles, noting their tendencies to generalize about a diverse continent, to project Western paradigms onto African contexts, and to disregard their own associations with colonial governments. Barbara Kingsolver’s 1998 novel The Poisonwood Bible has received much critical attention as a work that deplores …
