Investigating The Impact Of Television Advertisement Image Quality On Telepresence, Attitude Towards Brands And Purchase Intentions, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

In an experiment manipulating the image quality of television ads, 127 participants watched television commercials in either high or low image quality. The participants rated each ad for their attitude towards the ad and purchase intentions. Additionally, sensations of telepresence and transportation were assessed. The participants who viewed the ads in higher image quality reported more positive attitudes towards the brands, and higher levels of telepresence. The implications are discussed.

Wellbeing

This is the Phase Two report of the Australian Child Wellbeing Project (ACWP) which is a child-centred study that started with young people’s perspectives to design a major nationally representative survey of wellbeing among 8 - 14 year olds. The survey will benchmark child wellbeing in Australia and provide information that contributes to the development of effective services for young people’s healthy development. This document reports on Phase Two of the project: development of the wellbeing indicators. The development of indicators was informed by the findings of the first qualitative phase of the project, a review of literature and existing …

A Legacy Of Letters: The Construction Of An Aging Masculine Identity, K. Tiffani Baldwin Jun 2014

A Legacy Of Letters: The Construction Of An Aging Masculine Identity, K. Tiffani Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the construction of a masculine identity through a qualitative analysis of personal letters written by an aging man over the last two decades of his life (age 68-89). Symbolic interaction and life-span communication are the guiding frameworks behind the development of the research questions and the subsequent analyses. Research question one asks: What themes emerge from the personal letters written by an aging man? The following two themes emerged: a) relationality, and b) age and aging. Research question two asks: What do the metaphors that emerge from personal letters reveal about the …

Active Learning With Efficient Feature Weighting Methods For Improving Data Quality And Classification Accuracy, Justin Martineau, Lu Chen, Doreen Cheng, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Many machine learning datasets are noisy with a substantial number of mislabeled instances. This noise yields sub-optimal classification performance. In this paper we study a large, low quality annotated dataset, created quickly and cheaply using Amazon Mechanical Turk to crowdsource annotations. We describe computationally cheap feature weighting techniques and a novel non-linear distribution spreading algorithm that can be used to iteratively and interactively correcting mislabeled instances to significantly improve annotation quality at low cost. Eight different emotion extraction experiments on Twitter data demonstrate that our approach is just as effective as more computationally expensive techniques. Our techniques save a considerable …

Literature For Girls And The Preadolescent Novel: A Historical Analysis And Recommendations For Challenging The Status Quo, Molly K. Pim Jun 2014

Literature For Girls And The Preadolescent Novel: A Historical Analysis And Recommendations For Challenging The Status Quo, Molly K. Pim

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Children’s literature has long been an influential historical, social and cultural discursive site of gender identity and gender appropriate behavior. Currently, there is great deal of research and analysis of children’s literature and young adult fiction, examining literature’s role in children’s and young adults’ process of identity formation, as well as their conceptualizations about gender identity and gender appropriate behavior. There is little research and interrogation, however, of the presence of traditional binary gender roles and representations of gender appropriate behavior in girls’ preadolescent novels, aimed at 8- through 12-year-olds. For much of the existing research, preadolescent novels are lumped …

Transcending Pathology, Transforming The Thinkable Transperson: Young Transpeople, The Law And Gender Self-Determination, E. L. Hunter Jun 2014

Transcending Pathology, Transforming The Thinkable Transperson: Young Transpeople, The Law And Gender Self-Determination, E. L. Hunter

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

While contemporary attitudes, laws and policies in the U.S. toward lesbian, gay and bisexual people are increasingly more humane and just, transgender and gender nonconforming people continue to experience widespread structural oppression, discrimination and physical and psychological violence. Through a close analytic reading of fourteen contemporary court decisions involving young transgender and gender nonconforming people, this paper examines the seemingly neutral institutions of law and medicine and exposes how access to institutional resources hinges on a medically authorized diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder. It explores the harm caused by this pathology, its erasure of socialization, and its normalization of gender …

Middle School Teachers’ Discipline-Specific Use Of Gestures And Implications For Disciplinary Literacy Instruction, Amy Wilson-Lopez Jun 2014

Middle School Teachers’ Discipline-Specific Use Of Gestures And Implications For Disciplinary Literacy Instruction, Amy Wilson-Lopez

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Framed in theories of social semiotics, this descriptive multiple case study examined six middle school teachers’ use of gestures during one school year as they each taught two different subject areas: earth science, language arts, mathematics, and/or social studies. The data, which included field notes and photographs from 354 lessons and 151 video-recordings of lesson segments, were analyzed using constant comparative methods and multimodal concordance charts. The analyses indicated discipline-specific differences in types of gestures, frequency of gestures, and centrality of gestures to the teachers’ messages. Earth science depended on a variety of iconic and deictic gestures, the latter of …

Pourquoi J’Écris En Français, Julien Kilanga Musinde Jun 2014

Pourquoi J’Écris En Français, Julien Kilanga Musinde

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Why have I chosen to write in French? My personal engagement in front of French language, my profession of teacher and researcher in French linguistics, my quality as a writer and the years I worked as director of French at the International Organization of Francophonie have largely contributed to increase my link with this tongue. We say, the language belongs to his speakers and particularly to the people who use it as the place of expression of art and original thought.

La Langue De Banlieue : De L’Oral À L’Écrit, Christelle Lottereie

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Behind the existence of a social malaise in the suburbs and of numerous stereotypes, a linguistic innovation characteristic of young people has developed. Most of these young people, who consider themselves excluded from society, have created their own social and linguistic space. They have appropriated the French language and transformed it after introducing their own identity marks. The resulting language turns out to be a linguistic refuge for identity, which leads to the finding of a subjective stability.

Amethyst, Apotropaia, And The Eye Of Re, Laurel Hackley Jun 2014

Amethyst, Apotropaia, And The Eye Of Re, Laurel Hackley

Sociology, Egyptology & Anthropology Department Theses and Dissertations

Two specific aspects of Middle Kingdom Egyptian apotropaia, amethyst amulets and inscribed ivory wands, are connected by their religious, magical, and mythological connotations. The shared significance of these objects is made clear by iconographic similarities and textual references. The wands in particular are shown to represent a particular mythological moment, the return of the Solar Eye of Re to Egypt. Both amethyst objects and ivory wands reference this important mythological event in ways that illustrate the multi-level importance of the myth in the cultural landscape of the Middle Kingdom Egyptians.

Pragmatic And Cultural Considerations For Deception Detection In Asian Languages, Victoria L. Rubin Jun 2014

Pragmatic And Cultural Considerations For Deception Detection In Asian Languages, Victoria L. Rubin

FIMS Publications

In hopes of sparking a discussion, I argue for much needed research on automated deception detection in Asian languages. The task of discerning truthful texts from deceptive ones is challenging, but a logical sequel to opinion mining. I suggest that applied computational linguists pursue broader interdisciplinary research on cultural differences and pragmatic use of language in Asian cultures, before turning to detection methods based on a primarily Western (English-centric) worldview. Deception is fundamentally human, but how do various cultures interpret and judge deceptive behavior?

The Environmental Impact Assessment Of Cal Poly's Manufacturing Laboratory, Yoonho Mark Kim Jun 2014

The Environmental Impact Assessment Of Cal Poly's Manufacturing Laboratory, Yoonho Mark Kim

Materials Engineering

The purpose of the study is to obtain basic understanding of the sustainability of Cal Poly IME 144 laboratory. Since the general condition of the lab prevents precise, efficient data collection, fuzzy logic is used to provide an overview of the laboratory's sustainability. Aluminum chips, brass chips, and paper waste are identified as primary waste streams. Electric usage of the laboratory is approximately calculated based on the machines' running time. Fuzzy logic system with three inputs and one output is designed in the Matlab software environment with Simulink to simulate a model for the laboratory's sustainability. Also the study suggests …

Hear What They Say And Watch What They Do: Predicting Valid Mathematical Proofs Using Speech And Gesture, Caro C. Williams-Pierce Jun 2014

Hear What They Say And Watch What They Do: Predicting Valid Mathematical Proofs Using Speech And Gesture, Caro C. Williams-Pierce

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

In mathematics, practices of proof are notoriously difficult for learners to adopt. In prior work, we found that when providing verbal justifications, learners’ speech patterns predict whether their justifications are mathematically sound. However, current views on the embodied nature of cognition suggest that actions and speech may co-constitute reasoning processes. The current study investigated whether the gestures learners use while formulating proofs also predict proof validity. 120 undergraduates provided verbal justifications for two mathematical tasks. We analyzed speech patterns in participants’ justifications using text analysis software, and we coded participants’ gestures as dynamic or static. Results showed that dynamic gestures …

Vulnerability Of The Ventral Language Network In Children With Focal Epilepsy, Louise J. Croft, Torsten Baldeweg, Leigh Sepeta, Lauren Zimmaro, Madison M. Berl, William D. Gaillard Jun 2014

Vulnerability Of The Ventral Language Network In Children With Focal Epilepsy, Louise J. Croft, Torsten Baldeweg, Leigh Sepeta, Lauren Zimmaro, Madison M. Berl, William D. Gaillard

Neurology Faculty Publications

Children with focal epilepsy are at increased risk of language impairment, yet the neural substrate of this dysfunction is not yet known. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we investigated the impact of focal epilepsy on the developing language system using measures of network topology (spatial organization of activation) and synchrony (functional connectivity). We studied healthy children (n = 48, 4–12 years, 24 females) and children with focal epilepsy (n = 21, 5–12 years, nine females) with left hemisphere language dominance. Participants performed an age-adjusted auditory description decision task during functional magnetic resonance imaging, to identify perisylvian language regions. …

Taming The Beast: Why Courts Should Not Interpret 18 U.S.C. § 666 To Criminalize Gratuities, Stephanie G. Vanhorn Jun 2014

Taming The Beast: Why Courts Should Not Interpret 18 U.S.C. § 666 To Criminalize Gratuities, Stephanie G. Vanhorn

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

In light of the vast amount of funding the U.S. Government provides for federal programs and its desire to abate corruption, Congress enacted 18 U.S.C. § 666 to protect federal funds from being used to further illegal activity. Section 666 was enacted to supplement the provisions of the federal bribery statute, 18 U.S.C. § 201, and enable federal prosecutors to combat the misuse of federal funds, even at the state and local level. While § 201 specifically prohibits both bribes and gratuities, § 666 does not explicitly prohibit gratuities in addition to bribes.

For many years, the federal courts of …

Kim So-Wŏl’S Chindallaekkot (Azaleas) As An Immersive Environment, Wayne De Fremery, Jusub Kim

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

According to English poet Sir Philip Sidney’s well-known Apology, poetry is meant to instruct and delight. In the spirit of this assertion, our ongoing experiments algorithmically detect patterns in vernacular Korean poetic texts and manifest them creatively in digital environments. Our aspiration is to deepen the discussion of vernacular Korean poetry by enabling engagements with Korean poetic texts that privilege image over discourse, if only temporarily. The aim is to see, quite literally, what Korean poems can be in order to deepen discussions of what they are or might mean. This project extends the authors’ previous work by attempting to …

Following Lower-Court Precedent, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl Jun 2014

Following Lower-Court Precedent, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article examines the role of lower-court precedent in the US Supreme Court's decisions. The Supreme Court is rarely the first court to consider a legal question, and therefore the Court has the opportunity to be informed by and perhaps even persuaded by the views of the various lower courts that have previously addressed the issue. This Article considers whether the Court should give weight to lower-court precedent as a matter of normative theory and whether the Court in fact does so as a matter of practice. To answer the normative question, this Article analyzes a variety of potential reasons …

College Dreams À La Mexicana . . . Agency And Strategy Among American-Mexican Transnational Students, Nolvia A. Cortez Román, Edmund T. Hamann Jun 2014

College Dreams À La Mexicana . . . Agency And Strategy Among American-Mexican Transnational Students, Nolvia A. Cortez Román, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Drawing from in-depth interviews with university-level transnational students in Mexico, we highlight these students’ resistance and agency in the face of US legal and educational policies that have marginalized them and other undocumented students. We also illustrate pitfalls and possibilities that students encounter in a Mexican system that has not anticipated their presence. The interviewed students viewed return migration for higher education in Mexico as a strategy that could allow them to access/develop their imagined identities as college-educated professionals and one day, legalized citizens of the United States. At the time they made their decisions, before Deferred Action for Childhood …
