How Effects Of Local Labor Demand Shocks Vary With Local Labor Market Conditions, Timothy J. Bartik
How Effects Of Local Labor Demand Shocks Vary With Local Labor Market Conditions, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper estimates how effects of shocks to local labor demand on local labor market outcomes vary with initial local economic conditions. The data are on U.S. metro areas from 1979 to 2011. The paper finds that demand shocks to local job growth have greater effects in reducing local unemployment rates if the local economy is initially depressed than if the local economy is booming. Demand shocks have greater effects on local wage rates if the local unemployment rate is initially low, but lesser effects if local job growth is initially high. These different effects of local demand shocks imply …
The Group Iva Cytosolic Phospholipase A2/C1p Interaction And Its Role In Eicosanoid Synthesis And Inflammation, Jennifer A. Mietla
The Group Iva Cytosolic Phospholipase A2/C1p Interaction And Its Role In Eicosanoid Synthesis And Inflammation, Jennifer A. Mietla
Theses and Dissertations
In the presented study, we demonstrate that the interaction of group IVA cytosolic phospholipase A2 and ceramide-1-phosphate is crucial for production of eicosanoid synthesis in inflammation. Inflammation is a critical component of many disease states including anaphylaxis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and asthma. Eicosanoids are well established mediators of inflammation, and the initial rate limiting step in the production of eicosanoids is the liberation of arachidonic acid (AA) from membrane phospholipids by a phospholipase A2 (PLA2). The major phospholipase involved in this liberation of AA during the inflammatory response is group IVA cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2α). Previous studies …

Recent discoveries of transient radio events have renewed interest in time-variable astrophysical phenomena. Many radio transient events are rare, requiring long observing times for reliable statistical study. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Network (DSN) tracks spacecraft nearly continuously with 13 large-aperture, low system temperature radio antennas. During normal spacecraft operations, the DSN processes only a small fraction of the pre-detection bandwidth available from these antennas; any information in the remaining bandwidth, e.g., from an astronomical source in the same antenna beam as the spacecraft, is currently ignored. As a firmware modification to the standard DSN …

Morphologic And Molecular Identifications Of Digenetic Trematodes In Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus) From The Mississippi Delta, Usa, Mary O'Hear, Linda Pote, Marlena Yost, Cynthia Doffitt, D. Tommy King, Carla Panuska
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Increasing numbers of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in the Mississippi River Delta, USA, have been observed over the past few decades. This piscivorous bird is a definitive host for numerous digenetic trematodes, some of which may cause pathology in a fish host. We conducted a 2-yr survey of intestinal trematodes in 35 Double-crested Cormorants collected in the Mississippi Delta. We counted gastrointestinal trematodes, identified them to species using morphometric and molecular techniques, and sequenced the 18S and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) genes. We collected 4,909 trematodes, representing five digenetic species: Drepanocephalus spathans, Hysteromorpha triloba, Pseudopsilostoma varium, Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae, and Ascocotyle …

First Reports Of Pseudorabies And Winter Ticks (Dermacentor Albipictus) Associated With An Emerging Feral Swine (Sus Scrofa) Population In New Hampshire, Anthony R. Musante, Kerri Pedersen, Parker Hall
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The expansion of feral swine (Sus scrofa) populations into new geographic regions is of concern not only due to increased range but also because they carry diseases and parasites that pose a threat to humans, livestock, and wildlife into new areas. Recently, emerging feral swine populations have been reported in the northeastern US and due to their adaptive nature will likely continue to spread. During 2009–2012, 49 feral swine were removed from three counties in New Hampshire. Of these, serum samples were submitted from 34 for disease surveillance testing. One of the feral swine was antibody-positive for pseudorabies virus (PRV) …

Efficacy And Health Effects Of A Wildlife Immunocontraceptive Vaccine On Fox Squirrels, Sara K. Krause, Douglas A. Kelt, James P. Gionfriddo, Dirk H. Van Vuren
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Continued range expansion of introduced eastern fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) in the western United States could lead to widespread damage to agricultural crops, facility infrastructures, and displacement of the native western gray squirrel (S. griseus). Because traditional managment alternatives may not be feasible in many areas, public interest in the use of immunocontraceptive to control local populations has increased. We evaluated the efficacy of GonaCon TM immunocontraceptive vaccine for controlling eastern fox squirrel reproduction in Davis, California. We administered GonaCon to 33 male and 26 female fox squirrels, and a control substance to 33 males and 24 females. We subsequently …

Benefits To Rare Plants And Highway Safety From Annual Population Reductions Of A “Native Invader,” White-Tailed Deer, In A Chicago-Area Woodland, Richard M. Engeman, Travis Guerrant, Glen Dunn, Scott F. Beckerman, Chris Anchor
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Overabundant white-tailed deer are one of the most serious threats to woodland plant communities in the Chicago area. Moreover, the abundant deer in a highly populated area causes economic harm and poses hazards to human safety through collisions with vehicles. The artificial conditions causing the overabundance and resulting consequences qualify the white-tailed deer in the Chicago area to be considered as "native invaders". We examined the benefits of culling deer at a Chicago-area woodland preserve by comparing browse rates on four endangered plant species from years before culling began with years with culling. We also examined deer-vehicle collision and traffic …

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is endemic in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in MI, USA. Currently, the rates of farm visitation by deer and co-use of forage resources by cattle and deer are poorly understood. To evaluate the extent deer and livestock may share forage resources, we investigated farm, yard, and cattle-use area visitation by white-tailed deer and compared visitation with common livestock management practices. We fitted 25 female white-tailed deer near the bTB-infected zone in Michigan's Lower Peninsula with global positioning system collars. Livestock management practices associated with farm visitation included presence of confined feeding pastures, number of cattle water …

The direct and interactive effects of climate change on host species and infectious disease dynamics are likely to initially manifest at latitudinal extremes. As such, Alaska represents a region in the United States for introspection on climate change and disease. Rabies is enzootic among arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) throughout the northern polar region. In Alaska, arctic and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are reservoirs for rabies, with most domestic animal and wildlife cases reported from northern and western coastal Alaska. Based on passive surveillance, a pronounced seasonal trend in rabid foxes occurs in Alaska, with a peak in winter and spring. …

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife have increased markedly since first recorded in 1905. These strikes threaten human safety and cost the United States civil aviation industry >$677 million annually. We examined the Federal Aviation Administration’s national wildlife strike database records from 1990–2010 to characterize reported strikes with civil aircraft in Mississippi. We hypothesized that daily foraging patterns and seasonal differences would affect strike frequency for birds. We summarized 381 reported strikes (366 birds, 14 mammals, and 1 reptile) comprising > 42 species. Bird strikes per 1000 aircraft operations (take-off and landing counted as separate operations) increased between 1990 2010. The monthly …

Population Dynamics Of Double-Crested Cormorants In Two Interior Breeding Areas, Jennifer E. Chastant, D. Tommy King, D.V. Chip Weseloh, David J. Moore
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Because of rapid population expansion, conflicts between double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) and humans have increased, particularly at aquaculture facilities in the Lower Mississippi River Valley (LMRV), United States. Although key demographic information on the Interior population is sparse, management decisions for population reduction are already in place across their breeding range. New evidence suggests the Appalachian Mountains may act as a migration divide for Interior cormorants, causing some birds to migrate between LMRV and the western Great Lakes, whereas others migrate between Florida and the eastern Great Lakes. Most of the banded cormorants recovered near LMRV aquaculture facilities were banded …

The purpose of this thesis is to perform parametric studies of maximum pile force, pile settlement, pile cap rotation and pile force distribution on square shape pile group foundation by employing three-dimensional finite element software, PLAXIS 3D. The square pile group foundation is subjected to combined vertical load and moment under the elastic material of two soil layers. For this study, a special element in PLAXIS 3D, called embedded pile element is used to model each pile in the pile group foundation. To simulate the pile group foundation, a small gap between pile cap and subsoil is introduced in the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this research, copper conductive patterns were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by combination of spray drying of polydopamine nanoparticles, and consequently electroless plating process. The polydopamine nanoparticle ink was synthesized by self-polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride at different initial pH 8, 8.5, 9 and 10. The patterns were deposited by site-selective Cu electroless plating process on top of the PDA pattern at the controlled temperature 30 C. The effects of plating time in electroless plating and storage time were studied. Moreover, the adhesion and aspect ratio were also investigated. The conductive lines fabricated were characterized by two-point probe measurement, …

Effect Of Particle Size Of Silica And Sio2/Mao Ratios On Heterogeneous Metallocene Catalyst Performance And Polyethylene Properties, Chalermpong Ramrauytham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The metallocene catalyst is one of the catalysts, used to produce polyethylene having narrow molecular weight distribution. So, the metallocene catalyst has been interesting in many researches. To activate metallocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization, methylaluminoxane has been used as cocatalyst because it makes high activity for metallocene catalyst. However, both of them are in solution form, which make fouling in reactor and not good morphology in slurry ethylene polymerization. This problem has been solved by heterogeneous metallocene catalyst. Silica is widely used for heterogeneous metallocene catalyst because of high surface area and good morphology. This research is aimed to study …

Propane Dehydrogenation To Olefins Via Modified Pt-Based/Γ-Al2o3, Napat Hataivichian
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The effect of transition metal(X) added on Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was studied in propane dehydrogenation reaction at 500oC. The metal contents were fixed at 0.3%wt for Pt, 4%wt for X. It was found that the transition metal had an effect upon reducibility of platinum due to its interaction with X-containing structure, resulting in the presence of Pt metal was decreased and lower initial conversions are observed. However, the final conversions are not decreased, thus the bimetallic catalysts had a better stability because the transition metal sites attracted propylene from Pt sites, so there is no propylene remain adsorbed on Pt site, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The effect of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide solutions in ion exchange with the WO3/SiO2 catalysts was investigated in the metathesis of trans-2-butene and ethylene for propylene production. The concentrations of alkali solutions used ion exchange were vaired from 0 to 6.75 mmol/L. The results suggested that the active center precursors of the metathesis were diminished at high concentrations of alkali solutions (>2.25 mmol/L). On the other hand at the low concentrations (
