Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine Jan 2014

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.

Much Obliged: Analyzing The Importance And Impact Of Acknowledgements In Scholarly Communication, Joshua Finnell Jan 2014

Much Obliged: Analyzing The Importance And Impact Of Acknowledgements In Scholarly Communication, Joshua Finnell

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Author rights, peer review, open access, and the role of institutional repositories have all come under scrutiny by scholars, librarians, and legal experts in the last decade. Much of the conversation is centered on liberating information from the confinements of legal, financial, and hierarchical restraints. The relevancy of traditional citation analysis too, understood within the framework of an h-Index and Eigen factor, is under scrutiny with the rise of altmetrics. Collectively, these issues form the core of the scholarly communication process, from creation to dissemination to impact. However, an overlooked facet of the scholarly communication process is the acknowledgement. …

The field of school librarianship is examined as a domain where professionalism and appropriate LIS education are sustained to some degree in law and regulation but face challenges at the system and building level. Expressed preferences of …

Introduction To Neutrosophic Statistics, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2014

Introduction To Neutrosophic Statistics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Statistics means statistical analysis of population or sample that has indeterminate (imprecise, ambiguous, vague, incomplete, unknown) data. For example, the population or sample size might not be exactly determinate because of some individuals that partially belong to the population or sample, and partially they do not belong, or individuals whose appurtenance is completely unknown. Also, there are population or sample individuals whose data could be indeterminate.

In this book, we develop the 1995 notion of neutrosophic statistics. We present various practical examples. It is possible to define the neutrosophic statistics in many ways, because there are various types of …

Proceedings Of The First International Conference On Superluminal Physics & Instantaneous Physics As New Fields Of Research, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2014

Proceedings Of The First International Conference On Superluminal Physics & Instantaneous Physics As New Fields Of Research, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In a similar way as passing from Euclidean Geometry to Non-Euclidean Geometry, we can pass from Subluminal Physics to Superluminal Physics, and further to Instantaneous Physics (instantaneous traveling). In the lights of two consecutive successful CERN experiments with superluminal particles in the fall of 2011, we believe these two new fields of research should begin developing. A physical law has a form in Newtonian physics, another form in the Relativity Theory, and different form at Superluminal theory, or at Instantaneous (infinite) speeds – according to the S-Denying Theory spectrum. First, we extend physical laws and formulas to superluminal traveling and …

Neutrosophic Theory And Its Applications : Collected Papers - Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Theory means Neutrosophy applied in many fields in order to solve problems related to indeterminacy. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy that studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. This theory considers every entity together with its opposite or negation and with their spectrum of neutralities in between them (i.e. entities supporting neither nor ). The and ideas together are referred to as . Neutrosophy is a generalization of Hegel's dialectics (the last one is based on and only). According to this theory every entity tends to be …

Assessment Of Contributing Factors To The Reduction Of Diarrhea In Rural Communities Of Para, Brazil, Lee Voth-Gaeddert

Masters Theses

"In developing communities the occurrence of diarrhea has been reported at elevated levels as compared to those communities in more developed regions. Diarrheal diseases were linked to over one million deaths in 2012 throughout the world. While multiple pathways are present for the transmission of diarrheal diseases, water has been the focus for many aid organizations. Point-of-use (POU) water treatment methods are a common tool used by aid organizations in efforts to provide potable water. The CAWST biosand filter is a POU tool that has shown removal effectiveness of pathogenic microorganisms ranging from 90-99%. However, minimal literature was found that …

Escaping Liability Via Forum Non Conveniens: Conocophillips's Oil Spill In China, Chenglin Liu

Faculty Articles

In 2011, a year after British Petroleum (BP) 's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, ConocoPhillips's subsidiary in China caused a massive oil spill in the Bohai Sea. A group of fishermen suffered severe property damage as a result of the oil spill. After a failed attempt to have their complaint heard in a Chinese court, the fishermen sued ConocoPhillips in the United States District Court in Houston, Texas. It is very likely that the Houston District Court will deem the Chinese courts the more appropriate forum for this case and grant ConocoPhillips's motion for forum non conveniens dismissal. …

The Second Amendment Implications Of Regulating 3d Printed Firearms, Michael L. Smith Jan 2014

The Second Amendment Implications Of Regulating 3d Printed Firearms, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

3D printed firearms have arrived, and commentators are beginning to ask whether and how this new technology can be regulated. An inevitable question that governments and courts will need to confront when considering restrictions on 3D printed firearms is whether these restrictions violate the Second Amendment. In this paper, I argue that most restrictions on 3D printed firearms would survive Second Amendment challenges. In carrying out this argument, I consider a complete ban on the manufacturing and possession of 3D printed firearms and conclude that even this complete ban would be likely to survive Second Amendment challenges. Because these particularly …

Universities As Constitutional Law Makers (And Other Hidden Actors In Our Constitutional Orders), Adam J. Macleod Jan 2014

Universities As Constitutional Law Makers (And Other Hidden Actors In Our Constitutional Orders), Adam J. Macleod

Faculty Articles

In the stories told by opinion makers and many law professors, American constitutional law is concerned with two things-individual rights and the powers of government-and it is settled by the Court, which was established by Article III of our national Constitution. In those now-familiar tales, the United States Supreme Court creates constitutional law when heroic individuals assert their fundamental rights against an overreaching state and when Congress, state legislatures, and executive agencies are called upon to justify their expert enactments to an overreaching judiciary. To settle these constitutional disputes the Court looks either to the text of the written Constitution …

For law students contemplating employment with large law firms, it is helpful to consider the advantages of working at a large law firm, what to expect, how to succeed, and how to make partner. A number of attributes make big law firms attractive to students, including salaries, bonuses, and opportunities for future employment after large law firm life, such as potential in-house positions and other prestigious employment.

Law students who are looking for a steady, stable income, a tremendous resume builder or a career, and are ready to work extremely hard may enjoy working at a large law firm. Nevertheless, …

The Shape Of Property, Chad J. Pomeroy Jan 2014

The Shape Of Property, Chad J. Pomeroy

Faculty Articles

“Shape” means “a mode of existence or form of being having identifying features” or the “form or embodiment” of something. Form and feature, in turn, arise from pressure and time. Property law has a shape all its own: it exists as a unique body of law, with distinctive conventions and rules. And that shape, those conventions and rules, derive from a variety of pressures that have, over the centuries, molded property law into its present form. This paper seeks to understand and explain the shape of a particular area of property law – that of property forms.

Of course, this …
