Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz Jan 2014

Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Efforts to understand the differential mortality caused by plague must account for many factors, including human immune responses. In this essay we are particularly interested in those people who were exposed to the Yersinia pestis pathogen during the Black Death, but who had differing fates—survival or death—that could depend on which individuals (once infected) were able to mount an appropriate immune response as a result of biological, environmental, and social factors. The proposed model suggests that historians of the medieval world could make a significant contribution to the study of human health, and especially the role of human immunology in …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

This paper describes the conceptual framework and the methodology used to guide the systematic reviews of community-based interventions (CBIs) for the prevention and control of infectious diseases of poverty (IDoP). We adapted the conceptual framework from the 3ie work on the 'Community-Based Intervention Packages for Preventing Maternal Morbidity and Mortality and Improving Neonatal Outcomes' to aid in the analyzing of the existing CBIs for IDoP. The conceptual framework revolves around objectives, inputs, processes, outputs, outcomes, and impacts showing the theoretical linkages between the delivery of the interventions targeting these diseases through various community delivery platforms and the consequent health impacts. …

Mitochondrial Genetics And Cellular Metabolism Regulate Tumorigenicity And Metastatic Potential, Kyle Paul Feeley Jan 2014

Mitochondrial Genetics And Cellular Metabolism Regulate Tumorigenicity And Metastatic Potential, Kyle Paul Feeley

All ETDs from UAB

Current paradigms of carcinogenic risk suggest that genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors combine to influence an individual's predilection for breast cancer and related metastatic tumor formation. The genetic component, in particular, has become the focus of many emergent studies. A renewed focus on cancer metabolism and the Warburg effect has similarly cast a spotlight on the role, if any, of the mitochondrion in directing disease progression. Analysis of the direct contribution of mitochondrial DNA on tumorigenicity is made possible through the use of mitochondrial-nuclear exchange (MNX) mice in which nuclei from normal FVB mice (the background strain of the tg: …

The Role Of Human Ficolin-2 During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Allison Marie Brady Jan 2014

The Role Of Human Ficolin-2 During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Allison Marie Brady

All ETDs from UAB

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a significant human pathogen that typically resides in the nasopharynx of humans. The major virulence factor of pneumococcus is its capsular polysaccharide, of which it can express over 90 unique serotypes. However, there is great disparity in which serotypes colonize or cause disease, though the reason for these differences are not well understood. Serotype 11A is one such serotype that frequently colonizes the nasopharynx of children, but rarely causes disease. Interestingly, serotype 11E, a variant of 11A, varies only in the O-acetylation of a galactose residue in its polysaccharide repeating unit. This difference in structure is …

The Role Of The Developing Microbiome In Mucosal Defense Of The Neonatal Gut, Emily G. Blosser Jan 2014

The Role Of The Developing Microbiome In Mucosal Defense Of The Neonatal Gut, Emily G. Blosser

All ETDs from UAB

Neonatal late-onset sepsis is invasive infection occurring after the first 48 hours of life, and one of the leading causes of death among preterm infants in the United States and abroad. Infections with Gram-negative bacteria, such as Klebsiella pneumonia, occurring when bacteria translocate across premature gut epithelium into the bloodstream, can be particularly severe. Preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit undergo intense antibiotic regimens due to high risk of infection. Paradoxically, prolonged exposure of preterm infants to empiric antibiotic therapy early in the hospital stay is associated with increased risk of intestinal infection and death after adjustment for …

A Mixed Methods Study Of Health Literacy And Its Role In Hpv Vaccine Uptake Among College Students, Michelle Sharonda Williams

All ETDs from UAB

Health literacy includes the ability to understand and process written and spoken health information, and numbers and calculations related to health information. Low health literacy is associated with negative health outcomes, and poor patient-provider communication. In order to advance health literacy research, there is a need to assess health literacy comprehensively and to develop an understanding of how health literacy impacts people at various stages of their lives. A sequential explanatory mixed methods study was conducted to assess college students' health literacy. During the quantitative phase, the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (S-TOFHLA), the Newest Vital Sign …

The Multifaceted Role Of Neutrophils In Hiv-1-Infection, Nathan Bowers Jan 2014

The Multifaceted Role Of Neutrophils In Hiv-1-Infection, Nathan Bowers

All ETDs from UAB

In recent years, a new appreciation of the role of neutrophils in regulating the immune system has emerged. Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocyte population and are traditionally recognized as essential effector cells of the innate immune system in the host defense against invading organisms. Neutrophils play a critical role in controlling bacterial and fungal infections by multiple mechanisms including phagocytosis, degranulation, and formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Neutrophils have been shown to play important roles in viral pathogenesis, a knowledge gap exists in our understanding of the function of neutrophils in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1). …

Symbolic Imprisonment, Grief, And Coping Theory: African American Women With Incarcerated Mates, Avon Marie Hart-Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American men have been incarcerated at unprecedented rates in the United States over the past 30 years. This study explored how African American females experience adverse psychosocial responses to separation from an incarcerated mate. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory (GT) study was to construct a theory to explain their responses to separation and loss. Given the paucity of literature on this topic, helping professionals may not understand this problem or know how to support these women. Disenfranchised grief and the dual process model of bereavement were used as a theoretical lens for this study. Data were collected …

Achieving High-Value Cardiac Imaging: Challenges And Opportunities., David H Wiener Jan 2014

Achieving High-Value Cardiac Imaging: Challenges And Opportunities., David H Wiener

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Cardiac imaging is under intense scrutiny as a contributor to health care costs, with multiple initiatives under way to reduce and eliminate inappropriate testing. Appropriate use criteria are valuable guides to selecting imaging studies but until recently have focused on the test rather than the patient. Patient-centered means are needed to define the true value of imaging for patients in specific clinical situations. This article provides a definition of high-value cardiac imaging. A paradigm to judge the efficacy of echocardiography in the absence of randomized controlled trials is presented. Candidate clinical scenarios are proposed in which echocardiography constitutes high-value imaging, …

Development And Utilization Of Multiplex Pcr - High Resolution Melting (Hrm) Assay For Detection Of Arboviral Pathogens, Martin Mbaya Koome

All Master’s Theses

Arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted by blood sucking arthropods. Disease outbreaks caused by arboviruses are sporadic and unpredictable. Arboviral disease outbreaks in Kenya have confirmed the presence of a number of arboviral diseases within the human and animal populace. Currently, there are no approved or specific therapies for arboviral infections; treatment is limited to palliative care. Early detection and vector control are important strategies in control of arboviruses. However, there is not yet a single detection system that is capable of detecting all arboviruses simultaneously. The development of realtime thermocyclers capable of high resolution melting (HRM) analysis has enabled …

Two-Photon Microscopy For Biomedical Studies, Yassel Acosta Jan 2014

Two-Photon Microscopy For Biomedical Studies, Yassel Acosta

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Fluorescence optical microscopy is one of the most important tools to investigate biological samples and to observe structures in living cells. Based on the principle of the simultaneous absorption of two-photons and subsequent emission of fluorescent light we have developed a Two-Photon Laser Scanning Fluorescence Microscope that allow us to perform optical sectioning and three-dimensional reconstructions of structures in biological samples such as dopaminergic clusters of neurons and tracheal branches in Drosophila brain. The spatial confinement of the excitation light to the focal plane combined with the temporal compression of photons into short packets during femtosecond pulses make our system …

Spingolipid Metabolism In A Reptillian Protozoan, Entamoeba Invadens, Duran Dogan Debons Jan 2014

Spingolipid Metabolism In A Reptillian Protozoan, Entamoeba Invadens, Duran Dogan Debons

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Entamoeba invadens (hereinafter E. invadens) is an anaerobic parasitic protozoan that can be found in water and soil. Although the host organisms for this parasite are snakes, lizards, and other reptile species, the parasite is morphologically identical to Entamoeba histolytica, a causative agent of human amebiasis. Entamoeba inavdens exists in two morphological forms--(1) a replicative trophozoite, and (2) a relatively dormant cyst. While the transformation of cyst to trophozoites (called "excystation") takes place in the stomach, the differentiation of trophozoites to cyst (known as "encystation"), occurs in the small intestine. Unlike the cyst, a trophozoite is unable to survive …

Global Sphingolipid Profile Of Giardia Lamblia During Stage Differentiation: The Influence Of Sphingomyelin Abundance On Viable Cyst Production, Trevor Thomas Duarte

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Giardia lamblia is a protozoan parasite and a major cause of the waterborne-illness, giardiasis, worldwide. Giardiasis is endemic in developing countries and is a leading cause of non-viral- and non-bacterial-associated intestinal disorders. Acute symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, cramps, and malabsorption. The disease is often self-limiting, although the infection can result in long-term disorders such as chronic fatigue, stunted cognitive skills, and failure to thrive even after the parasite has been cleared.

This parasite exists in two morphologic forms--infective trophozoites and transmissible, water-resistant cyst, which is passed by the fecal-oral route and is likely to be spread by contaminated drinking …

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death among adults. Annually, an approximated 800,000 adults will suffer a stroke, and one victim will die every four minutes. In El Paso County and Dona Ana County it is estimated that the age-adjusted prevalence is 2.9% and 3.4% respectively. Little is known about the percentage of adults at risk for stroke in this border region. In this secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study conducted by the Far West Texas and Southern New Mexico Regional Advisory Council on Trauma and Emergency Healthcare (Border RAC), over 900 participants in these counties and rural …

Risk Assessment Of Waterborne Cryptosporidium, Victoria Norma Ochoa Jan 2014

Risk Assessment Of Waterborne Cryptosporidium, Victoria Norma Ochoa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In an effort to update the risk assessment of waterborne Cryptosporidium an additional and more complete human dose-response dataset of the parasite was used to calculate the risk of infection. The complete data studied contains larger human outcomes than the initial prior risk assessment evaluated by Haas et. al. in 1999. Quantitative analysis of the complete dose-response indicates that it no longer follows the Exponential Model used to estimate the risk for the initial data. The complete dataset appears to provide a better fit with the Beta-Poisson Model and even a dose independent constant risk model, which shows a considerable …

On any given day and at any given location, the residents of El Paso, Texas see Border Patrol agents, city police, sheriff's deputies, DEA agents, and FBI agents, ICE agents, DPS officers, and U.S. Marshalls, as well as a full display of military personnel. To understand how this location functions vis-Ã -vis the residents and law enforcement and social control we must think of the U.S.-Mexico border as a line of ingression heavily guarded from those considered dangerous, defective, and diseased. Immigrant bodies, seen as inferior and disposable, are often subjected to insidious levels of racist, classist, and sexist rhetoric …

Association Between Hepatitis C Virus Knowledge And Drug Use Risk Behaviors Among People Who Inject Drugs, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, 2012, Leah Nicole Morgan Jan 2014

Association Between Hepatitis C Virus Knowledge And Drug Use Risk Behaviors Among People Who Inject Drugs, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, 2012, Leah Nicole Morgan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Needle sharing during injection drug use is the most common mode of transmission for the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in the U.S. The scientific literature on the relationship between knowledge and risk behaviors for HCV transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID) is minimal. Evidence-based and harm reduction programs (e.g., needle exchange programs; reducing needle and works sharing) exist to reduce the risks of HCV and other blood-borne pathogens, however these programs are not widely available. Solutions to reduce HCV transmission in the general population involve changes at the individual level as well as at the policy level. On …

Il-2rβ T450 Phosphorylation Is A Positive Regulator For Receptor Complex Stability And Activation Of Signaling Molecules, Blanca Estela Ruiz-Medina Jan 2014

Il-2rβ T450 Phosphorylation Is A Positive Regulator For Receptor Complex Stability And Activation Of Signaling Molecules, Blanca Estela Ruiz-Medina

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Homeostasis of the immune system is required for proper defense against pathogenic insult. Cells of the innate and adaptive compartments provide a strictly regulated response to clear infections while allowing for self-tolerance. Dysregulation of the components of the immune system can lead to immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, and cancer. Key players of the immune response are T, B, and NK cells, which become strongly activated by IL2 through its receptor. The β subunit of the receptor becomes tyrosine, serine, and threonine phosphorylated upon induction with IL2. Phosphorylation of tyrosine residues has been extensively studied, however, the putative regulatory role of serine and …

The anti-cancer properties of curcumin, the natural yellow pigment in the roots of turmeric (Curcuma longa), have been extensively described over the last century. It has been shown to interfere with multiple cell signaling pathways, including execution of apoptosis, anti-proliferation, anti-angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, curcumin's cytotoxic potential is limited when administered in vivo. With the idea of preserving curcumin's characteristics, but improving its bioavailability, analogues have been developed and evaluated in the last decade. Most of the analogues have shown very good anti-cancer activity in various cell lines and one analogue is now in a clinical trial. Nonetheless, this …

Crafting A Narrative For The Red State Option, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard Jan 2014

Crafting A Narrative For The Red State Option, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard

Scholarly Works

This Article examines the current state of play following the Supreme Court's decision in NFIB v. Sebelius to allow states the option of expanding their Medicaid programs in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Holding that mandatory expansion was unconstitutionally coercive, the Court created the Red State Option. Despite the enormously generous federal financial support for Medicaid expansion, close to half of the states have declined. At the same time, at least eight Republican-led states have crossed Tea Party lines to accept federal funding for expansion. Drawing lessons from these states, including Arkansas, Arizona, Michigan, and …

The Effects Of Elevated Total Dissolved Solids On The Behavior And Survival Of The Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander, Desmognathus Ochrophaeus, Megan M. Morrissey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elevated total dissolved solids (TDS) have been found in streams in Pennsylvania primarily due to unconventional natural gas development (UNGD) and mine drainage. TDS is the concentration of dissolved salts in water. To understand the effects of TDS on amphibians, a semi-aquatic salamander (Desmognathus ochrophaeus exposed to synthetic solutions containing TDS up to 5,000 ppm. In an initial study, animals exposed to a solution of approximately 2,000 ppm TDS containing elevated sulfate experienced reduced survival and decreased locomotory activity. Follow-up studies were consistent with the hypothesis that elevated TDS had adverse effects on survival, but effects were not seen unless …

As the main witnesses of the ecological and economic impacts of invasions on ecosystems around the world, ecologists seek to provide the relevant science that informs managers about the potential for invasion of specific organisms in their region(s) of interest. Yet, the assorted literature that could inform such forecasts is rarely integrated to do so, and further, the diverse nature of the data available complicates synthesis and quantitative prediction. Here we present a set of analytical tools for synthesizing different levels of distributional and/or demographic data to produce meaningful assessments of invasion potential that can guide management at multiple phases …
