A Comparison Of Meat Purchasing Attitudes Across Generations, Jamie M. Mickelson Nov 2014

A Comparison Of Meat Purchasing Attitudes Across Generations, Jamie M. Mickelson

Master's Theses

To identify the factors that influence different generations meat purchasing behaviors. The list of the features for respondents to report are desirable to them when they purchase meat. The results of features will provide the answer to meat purchasing attitudes across generations, which will help to analyze which features influence generations purchasing behaviors. There were 290 respondents to the survey. The target markets are split in to four groups – young Millennials, older Millennials, Generation Xers, and Baby Boomers. The highest desirability for respondents decisions to purchase meat is good value for the money and second is no hormones added. …

Contrast Of Bayesian And Classical Sample Size Determination, Farhana Sadia, Syed S. Hossain Nov 2014

Contrast Of Bayesian And Classical Sample Size Determination, Farhana Sadia, Syed S. Hossain

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Sample size determination is a prerequisite for statistical surveys. A comprehensive overview of the Bayesian approach for computation of the sample size, and a comparison with classical approaches, is presented. Two surveys are taken as example to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of each approach, and to make recommendations about which method is preferred. The Bayesian approach of sample size determination may require fewer subjects if proper prior information is available.

Optimal Location Design For Prediction Of Spatial Correlated Environmental Functional Data, Mahdi Rasekhi, B. Jamshidi, F. Rivaz Nov 2014

Optimal Location Design For Prediction Of Spatial Correlated Environmental Functional Data, Mahdi Rasekhi, B. Jamshidi, F. Rivaz

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The optimal choice of sites to make spatial prediction is critical for a better understanding of really spatio-temporal data. It is important to obtain the essential spatio-temporal variability of the process in determining optimal design, because these data tend to exhibit both spatial and temporal variability. Two new methods of prediction for spatially correlated functional data are considered. The first method models spatial dependency by fitting variogram to empirical variogram, similar to ordinary kriging (univariate approach). The second method models spatial dependency by linear model co-regionalization (multivariate approach). The variance of prediction method was chosen as the optimization design criterion. …

Missing Data And The Statistical Modeling Of Adolescent Pregnancy, Dudley L. Poston Dr., Eugenia Conde Dr. Nov 2014

Missing Data And The Statistical Modeling Of Adolescent Pregnancy, Dudley L. Poston Dr., Eugenia Conde Dr.

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Missing data is a pervasive problem in social science research. Many techniques have been developed to handle the problem. Different ways of handling missing data were shown to lead to different results in statistical models. A demonstration was given based on statistical modeling of the likelihood of a woman reporting having had an adolescent pregnancy by handling missing data with several different approaches. Results indicate that many of the independent variables in the model vary in whether they are, or are not, statistically significant in predicting the log odds of a woman having a teen pregnancy, and in the ranking …

Fuzzy Bi-Level Multi-Objective Fractional Integer Programming, E. A. Youness, O. E. Emam, M. S. Hafez Nov 2014

Fuzzy Bi-Level Multi-Objective Fractional Integer Programming, E. A. Youness, O. E. Emam, M. S. Hafez

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We present an algorithm to solve a bi-level multi-objective fractional integer programming problem involving fuzzy numbers in the right-hand side of the constraints. The suggested algorithm combine the method of Taylor series together with the Kuhn Tucker conditions to solve fuzzy bi-level multi-objective fractional integer programming problem (FBLMOFIPP) then Gomory cuts are added till the integer solution is obtained. An illustrative example is discussed to demonstrate the correctness of the proposed solution method.

A Novel Authentication Scheme With Anonymity For Wireless Communications, Liaojun Pang, Huixian Li, Xia Zhou, Yumin Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Aiming at the anonymity problem existing in Zhu et al.’s and Lee et al.’s schemes,Wu et al. proposed an improved scheme. But,Wu et al.’s scheme is also proven unable to provide anonymity. Especially, Zeng et al. declared that due to an inherent design flaw in Zhu et al.’s scheme, Zhu et al.’s scheme and its successors are unlikely to provide anonymity. However, in fact, we can use a simple but effective method to solve this anonymity problem. In this paper, based on Wu et al.’s scheme, we propose a novel authentication scheme with anonymity for wireless communications. Our method is …

Comrade Jesus: An Epistolic Manifesto, Peter Mclaren Nov 2014

Comrade Jesus: An Epistolic Manifesto, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Set against the backdrop of the contemporary crisis of capitalism and world-historical events, this article examines the advance of globalized imperialism from the perspective of a Marxist-humanist approach to pedagogy known as “revolutionary critical pedagogy” enriched by liberation theology. It is written as an epistolic manifesto to the transnational capitalist class, demanding that those who willingly serve its interests reconsider their allegiance and calling for a planetary revolution in the way that we both think about capitalism and how education and religion serves to reproduce it at the peril of both students and humanity as a whole.

Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach Nov 2014

Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach

Scholarly Works

Flourishing Rights reviews Clare Huntington’s Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships, recently published by the Oxford University Press. This review explores the way that specific issues at the heart of the relationship between poor families and the state affects Huntington’s thesis and proposals. The review largely applauds the book but concludes that a robust form of rights protection, when combined with the impressive policy arguments Huntington marshals, might actually make real the audacious idea that everyone has a right to flourish.

Preventing Childhood Obesity: Strategies To Help Preschoolers Develop Healthy Eating Habits, Brent A. Mcbride, Dipti A. Dev Nov 2014

Preventing Childhood Obesity: Strategies To Help Preschoolers Develop Healthy Eating Habits, Brent A. Mcbride, Dipti A. Dev

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

DURING THE PAST THREE DECADES, childhood obesity rates increased dramatically in the United States. Despite new evidence suggesting a decrease in obesity rates in 2- to 5-year-olds during recent years (Ogden et al. 2014), the prevalence of obesity in this age group remains high and is a major concern for families and early childhood educators alike.

Researchers and policy makers now recognize the critical role of early childhood teachers in shaping children's eating habits through their mealtime interactions with children (Savage, Fisher, & Birch 2007). As a result, local, state, and federal entities have introduced obesity prevention programs in early …

Online Information Searching For Cardiovascular Diseases: An Analysis Of Mayo Clinic Search Query Logs, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak Nov 2014

Online Information Searching For Cardiovascular Diseases: An Analysis Of Mayo Clinic Search Query Logs, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak

Kno.e.sis Publications

Since the early 2000’s, Internet usage for health information searching has increased significantly. Studying search queries can help us to understand users “information need” and how do they formulate search queries (“expression of information need”). Although cardiovascular diseases (CVD) affect a large percentage of the population, few studies have investigated how and what users search for CVD. We address this knowledge gap in the community by analyzing a large corpus of 10 million CVD related search queries from MayoClinic.com. Using UMLS MetaMap and UMLS semantic types/concepts, we developed a rule-based approach to categorize the queries into 14 health categories. We …

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau, Brandon Lundy Ph.D. Nov 2014

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau, Brandon Lundy Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper provides a case study illustrating the crossroads between the agendas of international/national economic development with that of the development objectives of local communities. It shows how a community development project connects villagers to the larger world – both practically and imaginatively. This study takes a single case, the process of developing a guesthouse building project among the Nalú of southern Guinea-Bissau, to illustrate how a local attempt to connect to the outside world is intersected by community relations, NGOs, and development discourse. Through a community study using ethnographic methodology including participant observation, interviews, and focus groups, the village …

Politics Of Technoscapes: Algorithms Of Social Inclusion & Exclusion In A Global City, R. Swaminathan Nov 2014

Politics Of Technoscapes: Algorithms Of Social Inclusion & Exclusion In A Global City, R. Swaminathan

Journal of International and Global Studies

Social media and the Internet are seen as Siamese twins. The discursive architecture of social media is so tightly coupled with the various imaginaries of the Internet that the distinct spatiality, territoriality, and relational power dynamics of each is often simplistically blurred and merged. This paper makes the case that the sociality and spatiality of social media is not only different from that of the Internet but is increasingly becoming part of our contemporary built environment in a manner that confers social media a high degree of relative autonomy in its relationship with the Internet. The paper further argues that …

Labor In Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of Hosanna-Tabor V. Eeoc Through The European Court Of Human Rights' Religious Employer Jurisprudence, Francesca M. Genova Nov 2014

Labor In Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of Hosanna-Tabor V. Eeoc Through The European Court Of Human Rights' Religious Employer Jurisprudence, Francesca M. Genova

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note uses the European Court of Human Rights’ framework to analyze the Supreme Court’s decision in Hosanna-Tabor v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which recognizes a “ministerial exception” for religious organizations as a defense to certain employment claims. It argues that the unanimous Supreme Court in Hosanna-Tabor examines factors similar to those of its European counterpart, but protects religious liberties more robustly by avoiding some of the European Court’s preoccupations. Yet, the European Court’s assessment anticipates the difficulties of applying the “ministerial exception” in future cases.

Advancing The Transition To A High Performance Rural Health System, Charles Alfero Ma, Andrew F. Coburn Phd, Jennifer P. Lundblad Phd, Mba, A. Clinton Mackinney Md, Ms, Timothy D. Mcbride Phd, Keith J. Mueller Phd

Health System Reform

There are growing concerns about the current and future state of rural health. Despite decades of policy efforts to stabilize rural health systems through a range of policies and loan and grant programs, accelerating rural hospital closures combined with rapid changes in private and public payment strategies have created widespread concern that these solutions are inadequate for addressing current rural health challenges. The rural health system of today is the product of legacy policies and programs that often do not “fit” current local needs. Misaligned incentives undermine high-value and efficient care delivery. While there are limitations related to scalability in …

Mud Pies And Msasa [Tree] Leaves: The Unilateral Declaration Of Independence (Udi), International Sanctions And Settler Agriculture In Colonial Zimbabwe, 1965-1979, Simeon Maravanyika Nov 2014

Mud Pies And Msasa [Tree] Leaves: The Unilateral Declaration Of Independence (Udi), International Sanctions And Settler Agriculture In Colonial Zimbabwe, 1965-1979, Simeon Maravanyika

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article examines the impact of Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) sanctions on settler agriculture in colonial Zimbabwe between 1965, when UDI was declared, and 1979, when the Internal Settlement agreement ushered in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. Having witnessed a significant rise in the two decades after the Second World War, settler agriculture plummeted in subsequent years. UDI, this articles argues, was a major reversal of fortunes for the white agricultural sector as it opened a new chapter in the colony’s economic and social history characterised by biting international sanctions. A combination of sanctions-induced fuel shortages, loss of markets because of embargoes on …

Accounting For The Shift Towards ‘Multifaith’ Religious Education In Zambia, 1964 -2017, Nelly Mwale, Joseph C. Chita, Austin M. Cheyeka

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article sheds light on the factors that contributed to the development of ‘multifaith’ Religious Education (RE) in Zambia after 1964. Our analysis makes a contribution to the discourse on inter-religious RE in Zambia by demonstrating how Zambia became a multifaith society, a context in which political statements and ideologies have influenced the framing of the aim, and selection of, the content of the subject. Research for this article consisted of interviews with Christian missionaries who shared with us their involvement in developing, teaching and evaluating standards of the teaching of RE. We also carried out an appraisal of literature …

The OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) is the first international survey programme to focus on the learning environment and the working conditions of teachers in schools. The overarching aim of TALIS is to provide robust, policy relevant indicators and analysis on teachers and the learning environment for an international audience. It aims to provide an opportunity to examine best practice in education systems around the world, to allow countries to identify other education systems facing similar challenges to their own and to learn from other policy approaches. TALIS provides internationally comparable information in the areas of teacher demographic …

Generalised Neutrosophic Soft Set And Its Integration To Decision Making Problem, Rıdvan Şahin, Ahmet Küçük

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In 1999, Molodtsov [5] introduced the concept of soft set theory, which can be used as a generic mathematical tool for dealing with uncertainty. In this paper, we first generalise the concept of neutrosophic sof set defined by Maji [20].We then study basic operations on the generalised neutrosophic soft set. We finally present an application of generalised neutrosophic soft set in decision making problem.

Analyzing Consumers’ Decisions To Select Micro- Invasive Aesthetic Service Providers Using A Hybrid Method, Fan-Yun Pai Nov 2014

Analyzing Consumers’ Decisions To Select Micro- Invasive Aesthetic Service Providers Using A Hybrid Method, Fan-Yun Pai

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Micro-invasive aesthetic services are becoming more popular, and thus the industry is becoming more competitive. It is thus critical for companies to better understand the criteria that consumers use when choosing a micro-invasive aesthetic service provider. In order to investigate this issue, three focus group interviews were carried out in this study and the related literature was reviewed in order to find the relevant criteria. The Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) was then employed to find casual relationships among the criteria, while the Analytic Network Process (ANP) was further applied to evaluate the importance of each criterion. After …
