Startup lawyering is a distinctive style of law practice first observed in Silicon Valley decades ago. Like other business lawyers, startup lawyers form entities, protect intellectual property rights, and document financing transactions for clients starting new businesses. But startup lawyers also encourage entrepreneurship more broadly by promoting Silicon Valley’s practices and conventions, such as standard contract terms that streamline negotiations with venture capital investors.
Today, startup lawyers practice not only in established entrepreneurial centers such as Silicon Valley or Boston, but also in the shadow of economic development efforts to promote entrepreneurship. In this new context, startup lawyering is susceptible …

Optimization has been the goal of almost every human thought and action. With the growing computational capabilities, solutions to problems are also exponentially increasing. With rising demand for data and analytics on this big data, solutions to problems are also multiplied. Although, strong statistical and analytical reasoning has helped narrow down many solutions into set of feasible applicable solutions; Experts also seek knowledge of how these solutions have improved and what decisions are needed to be taken for remaining solutions to improve. This problem persists in software engineering with managers and domain experts taking decisions deciding future course of the …

Burden Of Colorectal Cancer Among The Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries In West Virginia A Comparative Analysis With National Data, Pallavi Balwant Rane
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia (WV) which is one of the most rural states in the nation, had the highest colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality rate in United States (US) in 2009. There is a paucity of epidemiologic studies that have decrypt the reasons for this high CRC mortality, or have systematically examined the burden of, and disparities among the population of elderly with CRC from a rural settings such as from WV. This series of retrospective cohort studies was conducted to examine the receipt of CRC treatment and the associated survivorship, comorbidity burden, and healthcare expenditures among Medicare beneficiaries with CRC identified from …

Relation Of Interpersonal Conflict Behaviors To Emotion Dysregulation And Ptsd In Adolescents With A History Of Betrayal Trauma, Vanessa M. Jacoby
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in response to exposure to a traumatic stressor. Although this is the most well known diagnosis for individuals who have difficulties after a traumatic event, research documents numerous difficulties and psychopathology that can result from traumatic events, many of which do not fit the DSM-IV criteria of PTSD. Specifically, severe, chronic, interpersonal trauma tends to have a different pattern of effects on individuals than does acute, non-interpersonal trauma. This is particularly true for children (e.g., van der Kolk, Roth, Pelcovitz, Sunday, & Spinazzola, 2005). Because of this, the construct of Developmental …

Bringing Down An Uprising: Egypt's Stillborn Revolution, Sahar F. Aziz
Faculty Scholarship
Despite warnings that bleak socio-economic conditions were pushing Egyptians to the brink, few could have predicted the timing and extent of what has come to be known as the “January 25th revolution.” For the two years that followed this unprecedented revolutionary moment, many Egyptians believed their nation was headed toward a political rebirth in the direction of democratization – albeit in fits and starts. But what ultimately transpired was far from a revolution, but rather an uprising. Those who risked life and limb in multiple mass protests are now in jail or dead while the military-security apparatus sits firmly at …

Hydropower: Time For A Small Makeover, Gina S. Warren
Hydropower: Time For A Small Makeover, Gina S. Warren
Faculty Scholarship
Over the last several years, hydropower has supplied between 6 and 8 percent of the electricity consumed in the United States. It is the most abundant, most efficient, and least expensive source of renewable electricity generation on earth.Yet, when most people think of hydropower they think of huge dams, dead fish, and a destroyed environment. Unfortunately, this perception has on too many occasions been a reality. Hydropower needs a new PR department. It is time for a "small" makeover.
To embrace the full potential of sustainable hydropower, investors and regulatory agencies must look to develop small, localized facilities on existing …

Predicting Opioid Prescribing Behaviors: Influence Of An Expert Opioid-Risk Evaluation, Alison M. Vargovich
Predicting Opioid Prescribing Behaviors: Influence Of An Expert Opioid-Risk Evaluation, Alison M. Vargovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Opioid analgesics have been shown to be effective for short-term pain reduction; however, chronic opioid therapy does not improve functioning, and may lead to problems with dependence and abuse. Physicians report having difficulty discerning substance abuse or drug diversion, which can lead to over- or under- prescribing, poor pain management, and may contribute to the growing number of opioid-related overdose deaths. The primary aim of this study was to determine if a psychological opioid risk evaluation influenced opioid prescribing in physicians at the West Virginia University (WVU) Family Medicine Clinic. For this retrospective study, participants were 151 (89 female) adult …

Samsāra To Nirvāna: What Would It Mean To Actually Free Tibet?, Leah Marie Shellberg
Samsāra To Nirvāna: What Would It Mean To Actually Free Tibet?, Leah Marie Shellberg
San Diego International Law Journal
For Mahayana Buddhists, samsara literally means “wandering-on,” but in theory, it refers to the cyclical nature of birth and re-birth characterized by suffering that a Buddhist must break out of in order to achieve nirvana, a state free of suffering. Since the occupation and incorporation of Tibet into the People’s Republic of China (“China”) in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Tibetan people have experienced a far more intense form of metaphorical samsara at the hands of the Chinese administration. The term “genocide,” coined by Raphael Lemkin in the wake of the Holocaust, combines the ancient Greek word “genos” …

In a 2005 press release by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (“ICTY”), Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte stated “[t]he debate on war crimes in the former Yugoslavia is not subsiding. It is present in the daily life and media, and always politicised . . . I am much more concerned about the victims of war crimes and their families, and I appeal to you to make the victim aspect of any legal process a priority.” Despite this stated dedication to war crimes victims and their families, the ICTY’s Trial Chamber (“Chamber”) recently acquitted two state security officials …

Adapting To Change: The State Of Singapore Private Enterprise In China, Wilfred How, Caroline Yeoh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
One of the most affluent and developed nations in its region, the city-state of Singapore relies largely on tapping global resources for economic growth, to ameliorate its tiny land area and accompanying lack of natural resources. Its current prominence is to a great degree owing to an early recognition of the need for such, and a well-documented stratagem of expanding its foreign direct investments (FDIs) as a means to stimulate economic development (Huff, 1995; Murray and Pereira, 1995) and strengthen the city-state’s ‘external economy’ - one which saw the island progress through a number of distinct phases of overseas investment …
Mindfulness In Organizations, Jochen Reb, Ellen Choi
Mindfulness In Organizations, Jochen Reb, Ellen Choi
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This chapter discusses the practice of mindfulness in organizations. In the first section we describe the growing interest in mindfulness training among organizations and discuss possible reasons for this development. We then review work on the definition and concept of mindfulness as they have been developed in psychology and organizational scholarship. In the second section, we discuss different forms of mindfulness practice in organizations, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as the most prominent. The third section reviews empirical evidence on the effects of mindfulness on work-related outcomes and processes such as employee performance, employee well-being, leadership, and ethical decision making. …
The Effect Of Shared Leadership On Workgroup Creativity, Simon Guive Minaee
The Effect Of Shared Leadership On Workgroup Creativity, Simon Guive Minaee
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Research on leadership typically assumes a single leader who has managerial authority over the group, unit or organisation. Shared leadership is an emerging concept of leadership as a group-level phenomenon. It builds on antecedents such as democratic leadership, semi-autonomous and self-managed work groups, participative decision-making and co-leadership that are typically studied as variations of leadership by a single leader. Shared leadership is seen as more distributed, informal and emergent than these. Recent empirical research shows shared leadership can have beneficial effects on a variety of group process and outcome variables. However, so far its effects on creativity have not been …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the viability of the media relations framework, Mediating the Media model (Pang, 2010), and ascertains its relevance to practitioners in a changing media landscape in Singapore where social media is emerging as an alternative source of information tool. Design/methodology/approach – In-depth interviews with 20 media relations practitioners who were former journalists. Practitioners with journalism experience were chosen as they perform better at media relations (Sallot and Johnson, 2006a; Sinaga and Callison, 2008). Findings – The model posits two sets of influences, i.e. internal (journalist mindset, journalist routines and newsroom routines) …
The Relationship Between Perceived Toxic Leadership Styles, Leader Effectiveness, And Organizational Cynicism, James M. Dobbs Phd
The Relationship Between Perceived Toxic Leadership Styles, Leader Effectiveness, And Organizational Cynicism, James M. Dobbs Phd
Dissertations
Employee cynicism within organizations has become a well-cited topic in the last several years (Caldwell, 2007; Chaloupka, 2001; Kanter & Mirvis, 1989). Within multiple industries, organizational leaders have claimed that cynicism is a factor in employee burnout, emotional exhaustion, and turnover, and that it directly and adversely affects organizational citizenship behavior, commitment, and organization effectiveness (Abraham, 2000; Anderson & Bateman, 1997; Bedeian, 2007). Despite such claims, very little empirical research has been done on the antecedents of employee cynicism, and the influence of leadership behavior on employee cynicism. This study attempted to fill gaps in the research by examining the …
Understanding The Development Of Global Leadership Competencies, Andrea L. Mcmullen Phd
Understanding The Development Of Global Leadership Competencies, Andrea L. Mcmullen Phd
Dissertations
As businesses seek to gain a competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving global marketplace and in the midst of a global talent shortage, the demand is increasing for guidance surrounding the development of global leaders. Although competency model frameworks have existed since the 1970s, the process of how an organization develops Global Leadership Competencies (GLCs) has not been well documented, particularly in new and evolving industries such as the biosciences. Furthermore, despite the time, effort, and money spent on learning and development or training programs, there are no studies that investigate employer-learner perceptions regarding the alignment of these learning programs …
