A Step-Wise Process Of Decision-Making Under Uncertainty When Implementing Environmental Policy, Am Knights, F Culhane, Ss Hussain, Kn Papadopoulou, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

An ecosystem approach forms the basis of many recent environmental policies. The underlying concept states that decision-makers must consider the environmental, social and economic costs and benefits in the course of deciding whether to implement a management action. Decision-making can be undermined by uncertainty. Here, we discuss potential sources of uncertainty and their effect on an ecosystem approach-driven environmental policy, the factors affecting the choice and potential for management actions to achieve their objectives, the challenges associated with setting realistic and achievable targets, and how we can prioritise management of detrimental activities. We also consider how human challenges such as …

Electrical Resistivity Employed At The Livonia Mound Site (16pc1), Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, Jennifer Patricia Gardner

LSU Master's Theses

Electrical resistivity was used at the Livonia Mound site (16PC1) to identify construction breaks, possible human burials, and other cultural activity below the surface. Resistivity transects traveled across the mound and the level surface directly south of the mound; this latter section was called Area A. Four transects stretched across the north, south, west, and east slopes of the mound; as a result, four vertical profiles were created from the apparent resistivity (ƒâa) values. The standard deviation of each transect was computed using the ƒâa values from the four pseudo-sections to establish the base-line for analysis. ƒâa values for Area …

The Effects Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb) On Work And Health Related Outcomes, Dorothy Abigail Blaine Johnson

Online Theses and Dissertations

The composition of the workforce has changed dramatically over the past several decades, the number of dual-career couples and working mothers with young children has increased dramatically. Many organizations have responded by implementing work-family benefits to help employees deal with the conflicting demands of work and family. Yet, researchers have found that these benefits may be underutilized by employees (Allen, 2001).

One reason these benefits may be underutilized is due to a lack of perceived supervisor support for the use of these benefits (Cook, 2009). This study will examine the processes underlying how family supportive supervisor behaviors influence positive job …

Interactions Between Eastern Newts And Wood Frogs In An Anthropogenically Altered Wetland System In Eastern Kentucky, Chelsea S. Kross

Online Theses and Dissertations

A key characteristic of the ridge-top ecosystem in eastern Kentucky is the presence of ephemeral wetlands. Ephemeral wetlands of the ridge-top ecosystem support an amphibian community assemblage characterized by species with short larval periods (e.g., Wood Frogs [Lithobates sylvaticus] and Marbled Salamanders [Ambystoma opacum]). Over the last 25 years, hundreds of wetlands have been constructed within the ridge-top ecosystem as permanent water sources for wildlife (i.e., game species). Consequently, the modified ridge-top ecosystem contains hundreds of constructed wetlands interspersed among natural, ephemeral wetlands. The altered ecosystem has been colonized by several amphibian species with larval periods …

Bankster's Paradise: The Importance Of Discourse In Creating A Haven For Criminogenic Banks In The United States, Maria Jacqueline Bordt

Online Theses and Dissertations

This work examines the ways in which language can contribute to a cultural climate in which white-collar crime is no longer considered "deviant," but rather is considered part of a normally functioning political economy. The 2012 money laundering case involving HSBC is examined in conjunction with the rhetoric of popular financial counselor Dave Ramsey. This research seeks to define how language involving the accumulation of capital is equated with virtuousness, thus constructing a myth about the criminality inherent to "legitimate" capital enterprises.
