Music And Acculturation: Using Culture-Focused Music Therapy To Address The Adverse Effects Of Acculturative Stress, Christopher A. Arnold Jan 2014

Music And Acculturation: Using Culture-Focused Music Therapy To Address The Adverse Effects Of Acculturative Stress, Christopher A. Arnold

University Honors Theses

More than any other demographic in the United States, Native American populations experience the highest rate of suicide proportional to population size. This is just one of numerous statistics indicative of the overall status of Native American psychological health. There has been increasing research demonstrating that Native American suicide rate and depression is positively associated with acculturative stress, and negatively associated with traditional heritage cultural integration. Because an increased amount of acculturative stress for Native Americans is correlated with high suicide rate and occurrence of depression, while increased traditional culture integration may be linked to lower suicide rate and occurrence …

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith Jan 2014

International Perspectives On Sustainable Agriculture In Cuba, B. Danielle Smith

University Honors Theses

Since the economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba has restructured their agriculture with a greater focus on domestic production of domestically consumed produce, and a dramatic reduction of petroleum products in all aspects of food production. This overhaul has included the broad application of what is termed agroecology – agricultural practices which focus on principles of biodiversity and sustainability – and inter-farm cooperation facilitated by the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and Campesino a Campesino. Academics and journalists from within and abroad have critically examined aspects of the novel reforms developed in the country …

The Rise Of Non-Marital Cohabitation: Review And Analysis Of Existing Research, Natalia Mosailova Jan 2014

The Rise Of Non-Marital Cohabitation: Review And Analysis Of Existing Research, Natalia Mosailova

University Honors Theses

Beginning in the 1970's, young adults are more likely to announce that they are moving in with a partner rather than entering marriage. As rates of legal marriage between ages 16-26 are continuing to decline, the rates of cohabitation are rising two-fold. Compared to previous decades, individuals in our society are now more hesitant to enter marriage and are more likely to try out their relationships through cohabitation before making a commitment. Archival research on pre-engagement cohabitation suggests that, contrary to popular culture beliefs, pre-engagement cohabitation is a predictor of both marital divorce in marriages and relationship dissatisfaction. Despite the …

Palestinian Women Of The Intifada: The Women’S Committees, 1987-1988, Melinda Cohoon Jan 2014

Palestinian Women Of The Intifada: The Women’S Committees, 1987-1988, Melinda Cohoon

University Honors Theses

This study situates the Palestinian women’s committees within the initial year of Intifada, 1987-1988, to show that women’s committees were politically active yet were an inherent creation due to class issues. It became evident that these unofficial women’s popular organizations were a development of the 1970s. Furthermore, this study argues that the women’s committees were affected by issues of class, politics and gender; after all, their creation was due to the charitable societies exclusivity to upper and upper-middle class women, while gendered differences in tactics of women and women’s committees during the Intifada in comparison to the Shabbiba (youth movement) …

Understanding Local Jazz Ecology : An Inquiry Into What Research Is Required To Develop A Comprehensive Understanding Of Local Jazz Scenes, Tristan Weitkamp Jan 2014

Understanding Local Jazz Ecology : An Inquiry Into What Research Is Required To Develop A Comprehensive Understanding Of Local Jazz Scenes, Tristan Weitkamp

University Honors Theses

This paper will examine the structure of local Jazz music economies and how the concepts of ecology (interaction between organisms and their environment) can apply to understanding and improving the health of this cultural sector. It will start by examining the academic knowledge in the related areas and then explore possible research methodology in order to better understand the economic situation of a local Jazz ecology. The methodology will then be presented in a framework for studying the Jazz ecology of Portland, Oregon. Once a research methodology has been developed, steps can be taken towards an informed understanding of local …

Gender Complex Curriculum For The Portland Public School District: Proposal, Kathryn Hayes Jan 2014

Gender Complex Curriculum For The Portland Public School District: Proposal, Kathryn Hayes

University Honors Theses

GLSEN states that 43.9% of students felt unsafe in school to express their preferred gender in the year 2011. This lack of safety can be attributed to a variety of factors including peer harassment, harassment by teachers or staff, lack of support or resources, unintentionally offensive language in the classroom, and lack of gender variety in historical figures and role models. The first part of this project is an original gender-complex curriculum aimed at creating a safer space inside the classroom for elementary aged students who may identify or express as gender variant by encouraging these, and other supportive behaviors …

The Socialization Of Women And Its Effect On The Wage Gap Within The United States, Kaitlin Lawrence Jan 2014

The Socialization Of Women And Its Effect On The Wage Gap Within The United States, Kaitlin Lawrence

University Honors Theses

President Kennedy signed The Equal Pay Act in 1963, a time when women were making an average of 59 cents on the dollar compared to men. 49 years later, that value has only risen 17.5 cents. If the current rate of progress continues at the same pace, it is projected that the wage gap will cease to exist by the year 2057; 94 years after The Equal Pay Act was established. Politicians, economists and women’s rights activists, among others question what must be done to bridge the wage gap and how has it continued to be perpetuated for so long. …

An Update To The Proficiency Benchmarks For Surgical Simulation Training In Laparoscopy At Oregon Health And Science University, Caleb Alan Haley Jan 2014

An Update To The Proficiency Benchmarks For Surgical Simulation Training In Laparoscopy At Oregon Health And Science University, Caleb Alan Haley

University Honors Theses

As the field of medicine, especially surgery, progresses, new challenges in the training of physicians have emerged. While surgical education has been traditionally structured as an apprenticeship-based model, this has proven to be time consuming, costly, and unethical to patients, physicians, and medical institutions alike. One solution that has arisen due to the need for balancing safety with education is the usage of simulation-based training. Simulation has become an accepted and valued way of training physicians due to its assurance of safe, scheduled, targeted, and objective training for the learner, as well as safe and efficient clinical experiences for patients. …

Neuropeptide Y: A Potential Marker For A Life-History Transition In The Red-Sided Garter Snake (Thamnophis Sirtalis), Daelyn Richards Jan 2014

Neuropeptide Y: A Potential Marker For A Life-History Transition In The Red-Sided Garter Snake (Thamnophis Sirtalis), Daelyn Richards

University Honors Theses

It is essential for organisms to exhibit appropriate behaviors as they transition from one life-history stage to another. While such life-history transitions are critical to both individual survival and reproductive fitness, we know very little about the underlying mechanisms. This project explores a potential mechanism regulating the transition of red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) from reproductive to foraging behavior. After emerging from winter dormancy, male snakes engage in mate searching and mating behavior followed by a transition to foraging. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a neurohormone that controls appetite and feeding behavior in all organisms studied. We previously demonstrated …

Affordable Housing For Public Benefit: A Comparison Of Newly Constructed And Rehabilitated Developments In The North And Northeast Neighborhoods Of Portland, Oregon, Sara Matijascic

University Honors Theses

Rising property values and low vacancy rates have led to a high demand for affordable housing in Portland, Oregon. In order to fulfill this need, a strategy that considers development cost and potential benefits of affordable housing to the public must be put into place. In this report, I compare development cost and public benefit of two housing creation methods – new construction and rehabilitation – to determine ways to increase economic feasibility, as well as positive externalities of the development process. This inquiry is tested using a public benefit survey that was distributed to housing professionals working in Portland, …

The Media’S Presentation Of The Second Chance Act: Funding For Reentry Following Prison, A Content Analysis, Ailene Joyce Farkac Jan 2014

The Media’S Presentation Of The Second Chance Act: Funding For Reentry Following Prison, A Content Analysis, Ailene Joyce Farkac

University Honors Theses

The US prison system has multiplied by four since 1980; each year about 730,000 people enter state and federal prisons and 700,000 people exit. As a result of this expansion, there is a massive increase of formerly incarcerated people reentering local communities every year. Budget cuts in prison programs and in local government’s social services are causing these individuals to be less educated and less prepared for reintegration; communities are also ill prepared to absorb them. The Second Chance Act was signed into law by President Bush on April 9, 2008. It authorized a pool of about $393m (renewed in …

Technology-Based Training For Older Employees: A Literature Review, Daria Maletis Jan 2014

Technology-Based Training For Older Employees: A Literature Review, Daria Maletis

University Honors Theses

Technology-based training is being increasingly adopted by organizations of all sizes. It allows employers to cut costs and to train more employees at the same time. However, arguably the greatest benefit of computer-based training is that it is very flexible and can be customized to the needs of the organization as well as to the individual needs of the trainees. This paper explores what adjustments can be made to computerized training programs for older employees to make their learning most effective. The results of the literature review show that older adults benefit from simple and consistent interface design, large font …

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel Jan 2014

Mindfulness And Test Performance After Stereotype Activation: A Randomized Experiment, Charles J.Z. Daniel

University Honors Theses

Although stereotype threat – pressure to avoid confirming or being judged based on a stereotype – has been found to affect performance on an array of tasks, few studies have examined ways to alleviate the threat after it has been activated. Previous research has demonstrated several outcomes of mindfulness exercises - increased emotional regulation, increased attentional regulation, change in perspective of self, and greater resources available to devote to learning – which parallel four potential mechanisms for stereotype threat: anxiety and SNS arousal, decreased working memory capacity, mindset, and effort. The present study tested the impact of two interventions - …

Adoption And Child Trafficking: Structural Violence In The International Adoption System, Vanessa Virgiel Jan 2014

Adoption And Child Trafficking: Structural Violence In The International Adoption System, Vanessa Virgiel

University Honors Theses

In the United States there exists as part of the institution of international adoption a hegemony of “saving” orphans from developing or economically devastated nations. This hegemony is a factor contributing to an adoption “market” in orphans, leading to incidences of the trafficking of children as part of the intercountry adoption system. This study's purposes are thus twofold. First it is a preliminary attempt within the academic realm to determine the emergence of this hegemony by delineating the US history of intercountry adoption from its origins in the mid-1940s as a response to humanitarian crises, to its current status as …

The Value Of Well-Being: Advancing Urban Blue Infrastructure With Holistic Metrics, Lisa Marie White Jan 2014

The Value Of Well-Being: Advancing Urban Blue Infrastructure With Holistic Metrics, Lisa Marie White

University Honors Theses

The design of urban infrastructure has emerging, documented impacts on the environment, local economy, and public well-being, yet conventional design and policy goals fail to account for these emergent properties. These impacts also lack consistent quantifiable metrics and classification in the realm of city planning. Without adequately holistic cost-benefit analyses, the true value of infrastructure projects fails to be ascertained, preventing consideration of design that provides additional benefits not yet incorporated into city policy and metrics. With more people living in cities than ever before, the built environment of cities has become an increasingly important area of study, and the …

The Role Of Translational Neuroscience In The Evidence-Based Practice Of Clinical Psychology, Anthony Beers Jan 2014

The Role Of Translational Neuroscience In The Evidence-Based Practice Of Clinical Psychology, Anthony Beers

University Honors Theses

Is the Information Age progressing to the Knowledge Overload Age? The presence of big data, complex systems, and vast knowledge networks can overwhelm a clinician’s capacity to sift through abundant research findings and theoretical models. Demand for economically-driven evidence-based practice and the ethics of incorporating continuing education place enormous demands on clinicians that are difficult to achieve effectively, efficiently, and ethically. Translational science is a research discipline focused specifically on the production of valid and reliable uses developed from scientific research findings. In the discussions on translational science, one controversial issue has been the role translational neuroscience plays in clinical …

Foucault Concept Communication: An Examination Of Alcoholics Anonymous, Amanda Joy Arms Jan 2014

Foucault Concept Communication: An Examination Of Alcoholics Anonymous, Amanda Joy Arms

University Honors Theses

While previous research on the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous has covered a wide range of topics, there is a gap which exists in the lack of examination of the 12-step program through the lens of the underlying mechanisms of power. The concepts which most clearly reflect these mechanisms of power are explicated by Michel Foucault and his work. This gap can be best summed up as a lack of comprehensive and exhaustive, textual analysis of multiple texts provided by AA to members of their fellowship. This thesis uses Foucauldian discourse analysis in an exhaustive manner, to examine pieces of …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Although insulin is known to regulate glucose metabolism and closely associate with liver cancer, the molecular mechanisms still remain to be elucidated. In this study, we attempt to understand the mechanism of insulin in promotion of liver cancer metabolism. We found that insulin increased pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) expression through reactive oxygen species (ROS) for regulating glucose consumption and lactate production, key process of glycolysis in hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and Bel7402 cells. Interestingly, insulin-induced ROS was found responsible for the suppression of miR-145 and miR-128, and forced expression of either miR-145 or miR-128 was sufficient to abolish insulin-induced PKM2 expression. …

Network Analysis Of Circular Permutations In Multidomain Proteins Reveals Functional Linkages For Uncharacterized Proteins., Donald Adjeroh, Yue Jiang, Bing-Hua Jiang, Jie Lin

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Various studies have implicated different multidomain proteins in cancer. However, there has been little or no detailed study on the role of circular multidomain proteins in the general problem of cancer or on specific cancer types. This work represents an initial attempt at investigating the potential for predicting linkages between known cancer-associated proteins with uncharacterized or hypothetical multidomain proteins, based primarily on circular permutation (CP) relationships. First, we propose an efficient algorithm for rapid identification of both exact and approximate CPs in multidomain proteins. Using the circular relations identified, we construct networks between multidomain proteins, based on which we perform …

BACKGROUND: Right-to-left vascular shunts are associated with brain abscess.

CASE REPORT: We present a 47-year-old female with a cryptogenic left thalamic abscess on which Streptococcus mitis grew upon aspiration. Computed tomography of the chest with contrast agent revealed an anomalous connection between the left superior pulmonary and brachiocephalic veins. A right-to-left shunt was confirmed in a transthoracic echocardiogram study in which bubbles were injected into the left arm; this shunt had not previously been noted upon right-arm injection.

CONCLUSIONS: We recommend aggressive evaluation for right-to-left shunts in patients who present with cryptogenic brain abscesses. In addition to imaging, this should …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Light is a potent stimulus for regulating circadian, hormonal, and behavioral systems. In addition, light therapy is effective for certain affective disorders, sleep problems, and circadian rhythm disruption. These biological and behavioral effects of light are influenced by a distinct photoreceptor in the eye, melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), in addition to conventional rods and cones. We summarize the neurophysiology of this newly described sensory pathway and consider implications for the measurement, production, and application of light. A new light-measurement strategy taking account of the complex photoreceptive inputs to these non-visual responses is proposed for use by researchers, …

Qualified Dublin Core And The Scholarly Works Application Profile: A Practical Comparison, Dustin M. Vogel Jan 2014

Qualified Dublin Core And The Scholarly Works Application Profile: A Practical Comparison, Dustin M. Vogel

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper explores the notion that records created with the Scholarly Works Application Profile will be more accurate and better suited for academia than those created with Qualified Dublin Core. This is accomplished by comparing and contrasting records of scholarly articles created with Qualified Dublin Core and records for the same documents created with the Scholarly Works Application Profile. After this practical comparison, the ultimate conclusion reached is that creating records for scholarly works with SWAP is much easier than with QDC, and that the records themselves are indeed better designed for academia.
