Quality And Shelf Life Of Pita And Tandoori Breads Supplemented With Three Novel Functional Ingredients, Yaseen Galali Jan 2014

Quality And Shelf Life Of Pita And Tandoori Breads Supplemented With Three Novel Functional Ingredients, Yaseen Galali

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract: The interest for functional foods rich in dietary fibre (DF) and low in glycaemic response (GR) is steadily increasing. This is because DF could reduce GR of food products and protect and restrict diet-associated diseases which have become common in society. But DF rich products are not always high in quality and palatability. Therefore, more fibre-rich functional products need to be designed and developed with good quality, palatability and longer shelf life. A response surface methodology (RSM) was used to develop both pita and Tandoori breads rich in DF with good quality, palatability and longer shelf life. So, a …

Comparison Of Behaviour Exhibited By Horses Ridden In Conventional Bitted And Bitless Bridles, Rose Margaret Scofield Jan 2014

Comparison Of Behaviour Exhibited By Horses Ridden In Conventional Bitted And Bitless Bridles, Rose Margaret Scofield

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The bitless bridle has been advocated as an alternative to traditional bitted bridles in many equestrian disciplines in order to avoid bit injury and distress that has been reported in previous research. Anecdotal observations and lay publications suggest that the bitless bridle has become very popular amongst riders and horse owners in the United Kingdom. The bitless bridle has been compared favourably to the use of the bit in foundation training with improved performance in bridling, long-reining and riding reported for some horses in the bitless sample group. Similarly, improved dressage test scores and comments by a judge have been …

Development And Characterisation Of A Three-Dimensional In Vitro Hepatic Fish Model To Investigate Xenobiotic Metabolism, Matthew Graham Joesph Baron

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Regulatory and academic studies use large numbers of fish annually. The use of fish primary cells offers an in vitro alternative for the assessment of chemical toxicity and the evaluation of environmental samples in ecotoxicology. Their uses however are not without limitations which includes short culture periods (i.e. longevity and loss of organ-specific functionality over time. Three-dimensional (3-D spheroid) technology is now established for in vitro mammalian toxicity studies and offers significant advantages for environmental applications in a model fish species. This thesis reports development of a reproducible six-well plate, gyratory-mediated method for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hepatocyte spheroid culture …

The construction of a guiding methodological framework for local sustainability assessment is a key to achieving a sustainable future. This study develops an approach to local sustainability assessment (ALSA), a methodological framework that facilitates the formulation, selection and prioritisation of key indicators to guide the assessment of city sustainability at a local level in Middle Eastern cities. Based on a literature review, this research devised a methodological framework, ALSA, which is a combination of the Commission on Sustainable Development’s (CSD)Theme Indicator Framework (2001) (themes, sub themes and indicators) and a Goal-Based Framework (indicators that most directly reflect the issues of …

Incumbency Effects In English Local Elections 1974-2010: Assessing The Advantage Of Electoral Defence, Michael Thomas Eugeniusz Turner Jan 2014

Incumbency Effects In English Local Elections 1974-2010: Assessing The Advantage Of Electoral Defence, Michael Thomas Eugeniusz Turner

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The study of electoral defence and its stated advantages are an integral part of American political science. Post-war, much academic literature has emerged in an attempt to identify and explain rising re-election rates of congressional incumbents and the political consequences of such a phenomenon (Mayhew 1974; Fiorina 1977; Cain, Ferejohn & Fiorina 1987; Gelman & King 1990; King 1991). Conversely, the study of political incumbency in Britain can be attributed to a handful of scholars who tend to consider the repercussions at parliamentary level (Williams 1967, King 1981, Cain, Ferejohn and Fiorina 1984, Norton 1990 & 1994, Norris, Valance & …

An Exploration Of How The Social Supply And User-Dealer Supply Of Illicit Drugs Differs To Conventional Notions Of Drug Dealing And Consideration Of The Consequences Of This For Sentencing Policy, Leah Moyle Jan 2014

An Exploration Of How The Social Supply And User-Dealer Supply Of Illicit Drugs Differs To Conventional Notions Of Drug Dealing And Consideration Of The Consequences Of This For Sentencing Policy, Leah Moyle

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The concept of ‘social supply’ has emerged as a term used both in the UK, and internationally, to describe drug distribution that is non-commercially motivated and almost exclusively found between friends and acquaintances. Social suppliers have increasingly been presented as actors who are qualitatively different to drug dealers (proper), in relation to their motivation and their activity. As a result, they have increasingly become identified as a group who should be distinguished as such legally (Police Foundation, 2000; Release, 2009). While social supply behaviours can be identified in wider research literature relating to recreational drug use, there is a relative …

Discourses Pertaining To, And Lived Experiences Of, 'Maternal Obesity' (Body Mass Index (Bmi) ≥ 30) And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus In The Pregnancy And Post-Birth Period., Rachel Juliet Jarvie

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis reports on a qualitative exploration of the experiences of 30 women designated as ‘high risk’ due to the co-existence of ‘maternal obesity’ (BMI ≥ 30) and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in pregnancy. This is examined in the context of medico-scientific/public health/ popular media discourses pertaining to ‘maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy. ‘Maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy are increasingly prevalent and clinically associated in manifold ways. Increasing prevalence is linked to the ‘global epidemic’ of ‘obesity’/diabetes: now commonly referred to as ‘diabesity’. Current biomedical knowledge asserts ‘maternal obesity’ and diabetes (‘maternal diabesity’) synergise in causing adverse pregnancy …

German-German Relations In The Fields Of Sport, With Particular Reference To The Olympic Games 1952-1972, Bernd Raeke

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis explores the surprising phenomenon of the existence of joint German-German teams in the three successive Olympic years of 1956, 1960 and 1964. This unusual example of cooperation – in the midst of Cold War hostilities - between the two antagonistic Germanys, West and East, was caused by: • the idealistic though illusionary conviction of Avery Brundage, influential President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that German-German cooperation in the field of Olympics, as initiated by him, would also result in closer political relations between the Federal Republic (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR): ‘a development in which …

'[email protected]', An Auto/Biographical Study Of Relationships With Food., Julie Parsons Jan 2014

'[email protected]', An Auto/Biographical Study Of Relationships With Food., Julie Parsons

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Popular discourses and current government policy focus on the need for individuals and families to make healthy food choices, without acknowledging the social and cultural milieu in which these are embedded. A neo-liberal focus on responsible individualism is part of a middle class habitus that ensures foodwork and foodplay are located within distinct heteronormative cultural fields. In my thesis I explore narratives from seventy-five mainly middle class respondents who engaged in a series of asynchronous online interviews over nine months beginning in November 2010. The themes that emerged aligned with public policy debates on the family, healthy eating, eating disorders, …

After having experienced the initial stages of the development of mass tourism, the tourism market in China is undergoing a period of significant diversification in which outdoor adventure tourism in the form of hiking is also a key growth area. In China the hikers, known as ‘donkey friends’, are growing in numbers and exploring new destinations to engage in short and long distance treks. As a result, whilst outdoor …

Challenges To Comsumer Protection Legislation In Tourism Contexts, Verity Greenwood, Larry Dwyer Jan 2014

Challenges To Comsumer Protection Legislation In Tourism Contexts, Verity Greenwood, Larry Dwyer

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Many destinations worldwide have enacted laws to protect consumers in general but which have relevance to tourists as consumers and thus destination competitiveness. The impact of any such consumer protection, however, is limited by certain complexities that erode consumer confidence within tourism contexts. These relate to unstable tourism environments, the changing dynamics of the travel services chain, growing product complexity, information failures, changes in consumer values, and technological change. Examples are provided of consumer laws relevant to each of these important features of tourism. Issues for further research into the links between consumer protection legislation and destination competitiveness are discussed.

The 1st experiment revealed that mirror carp fed diets containing 1% and 2% ß-glucan showed significant improvements in growth performance compared to fish fed both the control and the 0.1% ß-glucan containing diet. Equally, fish fed diets supplemented with 1% and 2% ß-glucan displayed significantly higher infiltration of leukocytes into the epithelial layer of in …

Computational Study Of The Mechanisms Underlying Oscillation In Neuronal Locomotor Circuits, Robert Merrison-Hort Jan 2014

Computational Study Of The Mechanisms Underlying Oscillation In Neuronal Locomotor Circuits, Robert Merrison-Hort

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

In this thesis we model two very different movement-related neuronal circuits, both of which produce oscillatory patterns of activity. In one case we study oscillatory activity in the basal ganglia under both normal and Parkinsonian conditions. First, we used a detailed Hodgkin-Huxley type spiking model to investigate the activity patterns that arise when oscillatory cortical input is transmitted to the globus pallidus via the subthalamic nucleus. Our model reproduced a result from rodent studies which shows that two anti-phase oscillatory groups of pallidal neurons appear under Parkinsonian conditions. Secondly, we used a population model of the basal ganglia to study …

Working-Class Housing In Plymouth 1870-1914, Ann Bond Jan 2014

Working-Class Housing In Plymouth 1870-1914, Ann Bond

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis sets out to explore the development of working-class housing in Plymouth, East Stonehouse and Devonport in the period between 1870 and 1914. Housing reform has been well documented with particular reference to London and other large urban areas, but has been little explored in the context of the greater Plymouth area – the Three Towns. These three towns with their similarities and variances have demonstrated that a London-centric study of housing will fail to capture the full range of complex challenges faced by provincial towns and cities in effecting improvements to the living conditions of the labouring and …

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract 1: Platelet derived growth factor BB (PDGF BB) has an important influence on smooth muscle cell proliferation in restenosis and atherosclerosis. Our understanding of different signal transduction pathways involved in the response of smooth muscle cells to PDGF BB is potentially significant for understanding and manipulating these processes. Prior studies have demonstrated a crucial activation of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) in smooth muscle cells to PDGF BB with the production of arachidonic acid and prostaglandin E2. In these studies we investigated the role for another PLA2, calcium-independent PLA2 (iPLA2) in comparison to cPLA2 on smooth muscle cell migration and …

Development Of A Pressure Swing Adsorption Process For Co2 Capture From Flue Gas Using Solid Amine Sorbents, Anahita Abdollahi Govar

Theses and Dissertations

Solid amines are comprised of adsorbent materials, like silica gel, that contain amine based organic compounds, either physically or chemically, attached within their pores. The major characteristic of these sorbents that makes them interesting for CO2 capture from flue gas is that unlike zeolites they are not negatively affected by the presence of water. The current work has been focusing on the development of a novel PSA cycle for CO2 capture from flue gas using a solid-amine sorbent composed of PEI physically immobilized on a commercial silica substrate. The goal was to achieve > 90% recovery and > 95 vol. …

Further, it is the hope that this analysis might further educators' understanding on the …

The Impact Of Culture & Ethnicity On The Counseling Process: Perspectives Of Genetic Counselors From Minority Ethnic Groups, Brittanie Morris Jan 2014

The Impact Of Culture & Ethnicity On The Counseling Process: Perspectives Of Genetic Counselors From Minority Ethnic Groups, Brittanie Morris

Theses and Dissertations

In the genetic counseling profession, discussions about cross-cultural counseling and cultural competence emphasize the importance of patient culture as well as counselor culture in a counseling session. A culturally competent counselor should be aware of the influence of her own cultural values on interactions with patients and peers (Weil, 2000; & Uhlmann, Schuette, & Yashar, 2011). Focusing specifically on counselors from cultural/ethnic minorities, this mixed-methods study sought to empirically evaluate the influence of a counselor's cultural values and ethnic identity on the genetic counseling process. 162 genetic counselors, 58 of whom self-identified as being from an ethnic minority group, completed …
