Method And Composition For Modulating Canonical Wnt Pathway Using Folate And Inositol, Kersti K. Linask Nov 2014

Method And Composition For Modulating Canonical Wnt Pathway Using Folate And Inositol, Kersti K. Linask

USF Patents

The canonical Wnt signaling pathway is implicated in many disorders including neural tube defects, limb malformations, and heart defects, developmental disorders associated with alcohol exposure (fetal alcohol syndrome) or exposure to bipolar medications (i.e. lithium), wound healing, and Alzheimer's disease. Elevated plasma homocysteine (HCy), which results from folate (folic acid, FA) deficiency, the mood-stabilizing drug lithium (Li), and alcohol (ethanol) are linked to the induction of human congenital heart and neural tube defects. FA supplementation ameliorates the observed developmental errors in the Li-HCy, or alcohol-exposed mouse embryos and normalized heart function. Li, HCy or Wnt3A suppress Wnt-modulated Hex and Islet-1 …

methods, systems, compositions include biocompatible polymer coated nanoceria that function as aqeous redox catalyst with enhanced activity at an acidic to moderaly alkaline pH value between 1 and 8. The compositions are used as oxidizing agents for decompostion, decontamination and inactivation of organic contaminants, such as, pesticides and chemical warfare agents. Another use includes nanoceria as targetable nanocatalyst prepared by conjugating various targeting ligands to the nanoparticle coating to form a colorimetric or fuorescent probe in immunoassays or other molecule binding assays that involve the use of a molecule in solution that changes the color of the solution or emits …

Adaptive Systems: History, Techniques, Problems, And Perspectives, William S. Black, Poorya Haghi, Kartik B. Ariyur

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We survey some of the rich history of control over the past century with a focus on the major milestones in adaptive systems. We review classic methods and examples in adaptive linear systems for both control and observation/identification. The focus is on linear plants to facilitate understanding, but we also provide the tools necessary for many classes of nonlinear systems. We discuss practical issues encountered in making these systems stable and robust with respect to additive and multiplicative uncertainties. We discuss various perspectives on adaptive systems and their role in various fields. Finally, we present some of the ongoing research …

Race Matters: Analyzing The Relationship Between Colorectal Cancer Mortality Rates And Various Factors Within Respective Racial Groups, Emma Veach, Ismael Xique, Jada Johnson, Jessica Lyle, Israel Almodovar, Kimberly F. Sellers, Calandra T. Moore, Monica C. Jackson Nov 2014

Race Matters: Analyzing The Relationship Between Colorectal Cancer Mortality Rates And Various Factors Within Respective Racial Groups, Emma Veach, Ismael Xique, Jada Johnson, Jessica Lyle, Israel Almodovar, Kimberly F. Sellers, Calandra T. Moore, Monica C. Jackson

Publications and Research

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of mortality due to cancer (with over 50,000 deaths annually), representing 9% of all cancer deaths in the United States (1). In particular, the African-American CRC mortality rate is among the highest reported for any race/ethnic group. Meanwhile, the CRC mortality rate for Hispanics is 15–19% lower than that for non-Hispanic Caucasians (2). While factors such as obesity, age, and socio-economic status are known to associate with CRC mortality, do these and other potential factors correlate with CRC death in the same way across races? This research linked CRC mortality data obtained …

Olfactory Acuity In Chronic Migraine: A Cross-Sectional Study., Alexander C Whiting, Michael J. Marmura, Sarah E Hegarty, Scott W. Keith

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: This study aims to measure olfactory acuity in chronic migraine subjects, at baseline and on migraine days, and compare to age- and sex-matched controls. Olfactory impairment is common in neurological disorders. While smell hypersensitivity has been established with chronic migraine, olfactory acuity has not been well studied.

METHODS: We recruited 50 subjects with chronic migraine from the Jefferson Headache Center and 50 age- and sex-matched controls. Using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), a validated test of olfaction, olfactory acuity was measured at baseline and during a migraine for subjects, and compared to controls at baseline and …

Homeopathic Products Have No Place In The Pharmacy, W. Steven Pray Nov 2014

Homeopathic Products Have No Place In The Pharmacy, W. Steven Pray

Faculty Articles & Research

September's column [“Fraud in the pharmacy?”] explored the legal definition of “health fraud.” To date, no homeopathic product has ever been proven safe or effective for any medical condition whatsoever. If medical claims are made for any homeopathic product, such claims fall solidly within the legal definition of health fraud.

Suppression Of Subtelomeric Vsg Switching By Trypanosoma Brucei Trf Requires Its Ttaggg Repeat-Binding Activity, Sanaa E. Jehi, Xiaohua Li, Ranjodh Sandhu, Fei Ye, Imaan Benmerzouga, Mingjie Zhang, Yanxiang Zhao, Bibo Li

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Trypanosoma brucei causes human African trypanosomiasis and regularly switches its major surface antigen, VSG, in the bloodstream of its mammalian host to evade the host immune response. VSGs are expressed exclusively from subtelomeric loci, and we have previously shown that telomere proteins TbTIF2 and TbRAP1 play important roles in VSG switching and VSG silencing regulation, respectively. We now discover that the telomere duplex DNA-binding factor, TbTRF, also plays a critical role in VSG switching regulation, as a transient depletion of TbTRF leads to significantly more VSG switching events. We solved the NMR structure of the DNA-binding Myb domain of TbTRF, …

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong Nov 2014

Gender Diversity And Same-Sex Marriage, Ian Farrell, Nancy Leong

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Opponents of same-sex marriage have recently adopted a curious new argument. The argument goes something like this. The Supreme Court has held that diversity is a compelling state interest in institutions of higher education. Opposite-sex marriage includes gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not. Therefore, states may allow same-sex marriage while banning opposite-sex marriage — even if the ban triggers heightened scrutiny under equal protection or due process — because opposite-sex marriage furthers gender diversity, while same-sex marriage does not.

The gender diversity argument against same-sex marriage has made its way into a number of briefs during the recent increase …
