Abstract

Diabetes has been a growing concern in the United States due to the rapidly increasing incidence of this disease over the past decade. In their 2014 report, the CDC reported there were 29.1 million people diagnosed with diabetes in 2012, comprising 9.3% of the total US population. In addition, according to the CDC, 1.7 million people were newly diagnosed with type I and type II diabetes in 2012 with health care costs at an estimated $245 billion. Moving forward, the most effective approach is to empower and educate these patients to self-manage their own disease to decrease or prevent …

Top-Down Processes In Simulated Combined Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect Of Context And The Role Of Low-Frequency Cues In The Perception Of Temporally Interrupted Speech, Soo Hee Oh Nov 2014

Top-Down Processes In Simulated Combined Electric-Acoustic Hearing: The Effect Of Context And The Role Of Low-Frequency Cues In The Perception Of Temporally Interrupted Speech, Soo Hee Oh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the number of unilateral cochlear implant (CI) users with functional residual-hearing has increased and bimodal hearing has become more prevalent. According to the multi-source speech perception model, both bottom-up and top-down processes are important components of speech perception in bimodal hearing. Additionally, these two components are thought to interact with each other to different degrees depending on the nature of the speech materials and the quality of the bottom-up cues. Previous studies have documented the benefits of bimodal hearing as compared with a CI alone, but most of them have focused on the importance of bottom-up, low-frequency …

Development Of A Reusable Nutrient Recovery System To Sustainably Integrate Small-Scale Sanitation And Agriculture, Jorge Luis Calabria Nov 2014

Development Of A Reusable Nutrient Recovery System To Sustainably Integrate Small-Scale Sanitation And Agriculture, Jorge Luis Calabria

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emerging technologies in sanitation and food production foster the potential to advance progress towards key sustainable development goals of ensuring adequate sanitation and food security to all. Non-Sewered Sanitation Systems (NSSSs), as detailed by the recent International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 30500 standard, are being developed to overcome challenges of lacking sanitation infrastructure and resource scarcity by providing autonomous, off-grid wastewater treatment (WWT) service in a much smaller footprints than large centralized treatment facilities. A promising NSSS platform is the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) that can achieve high (WWT) throughput in a small footprint using ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration to …

Streptococcus pneumoniae, an inhabitant of the upper respiratory mucosa, causes respiratory and invasive infections as well as conjunctivitis. Strains that lack the capsule, a main virulence factor and the target of current vaccines, are often isolated from conjunctivitis cases. Here we perform a comparative genomic analysis of 271 strains of conjunctivitis-causing S. pneumoniae from 72 postal codes in the United States. We find that the vast majority of conjunctivitis strains are members of a distinct cluster of closely related unencapsulated strains. These strains possess divergent forms of pneumococcal virulence factors (such as CbpA and neuraminidases) that are not shared with …

A Plausible Mechanism, Based Upon Short-Root Movement, For Regulating The Number Of Cortex Cell Layers In Roots., Shuang Wu, Chin-Mei Lee, Tomomi Hayashi, Simara Price, Fanchon Divol, Sophia Henry, Germain Pauluzzi, Christophe Perin, Kimberly L Gallagher

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences & Biotechnology Faculty Papers

Formation of specialized cells and tissues at defined times and in specific positions is essential for the development of multicellular organisms. Often this developmental precision is achieved through intercellular signaling networks, which establish patterns of differential gene expression and ultimately the specification of distinct cell fates. Here we address the question of how the SHORT-ROOT (SHR) proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana (AtSHR), Brachypodium distachyon (BdSHR), and Oryza sativa (OsSHR1 and OsSHR2) function in patterning the root ground tissue. We find that all of the SHR proteins function as mobile signals in A. thaliana and all of the SHR homologs physically interact …

On The Use Of One-Parameter Family Of Synthetic Estimators For Small Areas, V. K. Singh, S. K. Seth Nov 2014

On The Use Of One-Parameter Family Of Synthetic Estimators For Small Areas, V. K. Singh, S. K. Seth

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Small area estimation (SAE) has received a lot of concern of sample survey statisticians in last few years in want of reliable small area statistics which is generally not possible to get by traditional area-specific direct estimators due to very small size of samples in small area. This paper has been devoted to the development of an efficient sampling strategy by suggesting a one-parameter class of estimators for the estimation of parameters of small area using one auxiliary characteristic. The suggested class provides a class of synthetic estimators. Certain important properties have been discussed with. In order to demonstrate the …

The Relationship Between Pain Sensitivity And Motor Adaptations, Irina Fedulow, Katherine S. Rudolph Nov 2014

The Relationship Between Pain Sensitivity And Motor Adaptations, Irina Fedulow, Katherine S. Rudolph

Research Report Posters

The perception of pain in patient populations can arise from tissue damage but when pain persists past the point of tissue healing it is thought to relate to abnormal pain processing in the CNS such as persistent central sensitization. Studies have shown that persistent central sensitization occurs in about 1/3 of people with chronic pain from knee OA and this abnormal pain processing can affect motor output and motor adaptation. It is unclear whether individuals with OA and persistent sensitization are predisposed to heightened pain perception or whether they develop heightened pain as a result of the chronic pain from …

Corticosteroids And Pediatric Septic Shock Outcomes: A Risk Stratified Analysis, Sarah J. Atkinson, Natalie Z. Cvijanovich, Neal J. Thomas, Geoffrey L. Allen, Nick Anas, Robert J. Freishtat, +17 Additional Authors

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Background

The potential benefits of corticosteroids for septic shock may depend on initial mortality risk.

Objective

We determined associations between corticosteroids and outcomes in children with septic shock who were stratified by initial mortality risk.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective analysis of an ongoing, multi-center pediatric septic shock clinical and biological database. Using a validated biomarker-based stratification tool (PERSEVERE), 496 subjects were stratified into three initial mortality risk strata (low, intermediate, and high). Subjects receiving corticosteroids during the initial 7 days of admission (n = 252) were compared to subjects who did not receive corticosteroids (n = 244). Logistic regression …
