Changes In Predicted Muscle Coordination With Subject-Specific Muscle Parameters For Individuals After Stroke, Brian A. Knarr, Darcy S. Reiman, Stuart A. Binder-Macleod, Jill S. Higginson
Journal Articles
Muscle weakness is commonly seen in individuals after stroke, characterized by lower forces during a maximal volitional contraction. Accurate quantification of muscle weakness is paramount when evaluating individual performance and response to after stroke rehabilitation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of subject-specific muscle force and activation deficits on predicted muscle coordination when using musculoskeletal models for individuals after stroke. Maximum force generating ability and central activation ratio of the paretic plantar flexors, dorsiflexors, and quadriceps muscle groups were obtained using burst superimposition for four individuals after stroke with a range of walking speeds. Two models …

Why Restrictions On The Immigration Of Health Workers Are Unjust, Javier S. Hidalgo
Why Restrictions On The Immigration Of Health Workers Are Unjust, Javier S. Hidalgo
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Some bioethicists and political philosophers argue that rich states should restrict the immigration of health workers from poor countries in order to prevent harm to people in these countries. In this essay, I argue that restrictions on the immigration of health workers are unjust, even if this immigration results in bad health outcomes for people in poor countries. I contend that negative duties to refrain from interfering with the occupational liberties of health workers outweighs rich states’ positive duties to prevent harm to people in sending countries. Furthermore, I defend this claim against the objection that health workers in poor …

Jump And Pull-In Dynamics Of An Electrically Actuated Bistable Mems Device, Laura Ruzziconi, Stefano Lenci, Mohammad I. Younis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
This study analyzes a theoretical bistable MEMS device, which exhibits a considerable versatility of behavior. After exploring the coexistence of attractors, we focus on each rest position, and investigate the final outcome, when the electrodynamic voltage is suddenly applied. Our aim is to describe the parameter range where each attractor may practically be observed under realistic conditions, when an electric load is suddenly applied. Since disturbances are inevitably encountered in experiments and practice, a dynamical integrity analysis is performed in order to take them into account. We build the integrity charts, which examine the practical vulnerability of each attractor. A …
