Promoting Resident-Centered Care Through The Implementation Of Best Practices: A System-Level Implementation Program, Doris Grinspun, Irmajean Bajnok, Carol Holmes, Heather Mcconnell

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Monday, July 28, 2014:

A system-level implementation strategy that supports the uptake, evaluation and sustainability of evidence-based practices within the long-term care sector is being led by a professional nursing association. This work has been made possible through government supported dedicated funding - with the goal of supporting long-term care homes in implementing best practices and enhancing resident-centered, quality care. The strategies utilized by the program assist the long-term care homes to not only leverage their efforts to meet provincially mandated programs in key practice areas such as falls prevention, wound care, continence and pain, but to …

An Examination Of Research To Practice Gaps In Education: Whole Language, Learning Modalities, And Brain Gym, Elizabeth Strohman

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the documented research to practice gap in education by discussing three recent trends in education that gained momentum with little to no empirical support: (a) whole language reading instruction; (b) modality-based instruction; and (c) Brain Gym. This thesis examines the trend in education toward embracing unsubstantiated strategies by spotlighting these three educational trends and offers recommendations for addressing the research to practice gap in the field of education.

Success Against All Odds Lessons Learned From Successful, Impoverished Students, Amanda L. King Nov 2014

Success Against All Odds Lessons Learned From Successful, Impoverished Students, Amanda L. King

Senior Honors Theses

The effects of poverty on students’ education have been well documented and a positive correlation can be seen between these effects and their academic success. What is unclear, however, are the exceptions to this correlation. How do students from low-socio-economic status (SES) families succeed despite the seemingly insurmountable odds they face? The literature from a wide variety of longitudinal—and interview-based studies from the past three decades suggests that character traits such as persistence, determination, and curiosity are key to their success. Schools with a majority student body from low-SES homes have found success in meeting and exceeding state standards through …

Christian Persecution In Pakistan: An Examination Of Life In The Midst Of Violence, Rebecca Seiler Nov 2014

Christian Persecution In Pakistan: An Examination Of Life In The Midst Of Violence, Rebecca Seiler

Senior Honors Theses

As a nation founded on religious freedom, it is the duty of the United States to recognize those who stand up for these beliefs across the world in solidarity. International persecution of Christians has dramatically increased due to the spread of radical Islam throughout the world, particularly in South Asia. By means of active, violent persecution as well as more passive forms of aggression, daily life for Pakistani Christians is both challenging and dangerous. While there is no easy solution to this issue, it is essential to continue advocating for those facing persecution and punish the oppressors. The American church …

Law And Religion: Sharia Law And The First Amendment, Joseph A. Williamson Nov 2014

Law And Religion: Sharia Law And The First Amendment, Joseph A. Williamson

Senior Honors Theses

America has long been seen as the capital of religious freedom and individual rights. In recent years a debate has arisen over whether an individual can personally adhere to the legal concept of sharia law under the protections of the first amendment. At the center of this debate is precedent that can be drawn from previous interactions between religion and American ideals. Two similar issues that have been settled both judicially and legislatively are the conscientious draft objector and the federal prohibition of polygamy. By studying the roots of Islamic law and then the basis of these two concepts, a …

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice, A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul Weldon Nov 2014

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice, A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul Weldon

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. material produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. However, finding and accessing policy information is a time-consuming task made harder by …

Transition Experiences Out Of Intercollegiate Athletics: A Meta-Synthesis, Rhema D. Fuller Nov 2014

Transition Experiences Out Of Intercollegiate Athletics: A Meta-Synthesis, Rhema D. Fuller

The Qualitative Report

Given the renewed focus as to the degree in which institutions of higher education are preparing their student-athletes for life after sports, this study used a qualitative meta-synthesis research method design to examine the transition experiences of college athletes out of intercollegiate sport. The researcher synthesized data from nine qualitative studies, leading to the identification of six themes characteristic of the transition experience: athletic identity, anticipation and preparation, branching out, satisfaction with athletic performance, loss of camaraderie and support systems. Finally, the manuscript discusses the results of the meta-synthesis in light of their theoretical and practical implications.

Pathogenic Landscape Of Transboundary Zoonotic Diseases In The Mexico–Us Border Along The Rio Grande, Maria Dolores Esteve-Gassent, Adalberto A. Pérez De León, Dora Romero-Salas, Teresa Patricia Feria-Arroyo, Ramiro Patino, John A. Goolsby

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Transboundary zoonotic diseases, several of which are vector borne, can maintain a dynamic focus and have pathogens circulating in geographic regions encircling multiple geopolitical boundaries. Global change is intensifying transboundary problems, including the spatial variation of the risk and incidence of zoonotic diseases. The complexity of these challenges can be greater in areas where rivers delineate international boundaries and encompass transitions between ecozones. The Rio Grande serves as a natural border between the US State ofTexas and the Mexican States of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, andTamaulipas. Not only do millions of people live in this transboundary region, but also a substantial amount …

Achieving Global Range In Future Subsonic And Supersonic Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D. Nov 2014

Achieving Global Range In Future Subsonic And Supersonic Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

No commercial airplane in service today is able to fly half great-circle distances over the globe and achieve the non-stop or the global range to any antipodal location on Earth. A subsonic jetliner has the optimum cruising speed at Mach numbers approaching the drag divergence Mach number while still preserving relatively high aerodynamic efficiency. Various fuel-flow laws were used to investigate the cruise performance of subsonic and supersonic aircraft. The effect of wind and aircraft weight and how it affects the optimal cruising airspeed was investigated. Of all different operational cruising techniques, the cruise-climb at high Mach numbers is the …

Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez Nov 2014

Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Word recognition is based on the complex interplay of bottom up processing of acoustic input and corresponding top-down processing based on linguistic redundancies (i.e., contextual cues). Friedrich and Kotz (2007) investigated the timeline of integrating top-down and bottom-up processes among young adults with normal hearing using sentences presented in quiet. As a follow-up study, also with young adults with normal hearing (Experiment 1 of this dissertation), we used sentences embedded in multi-talker background noise and found similar results to Friedrich and Kotz (2007); but, with the use of principal component analysis (PCA) unveiled additional effects of phonological and semantic integration …

"I'D Rather Dance Outside": A Phenomenological Examination Of Youth Experiences In Outdoor, Noncompetitive Physical Activity, Richard W. Christiana, Marsha Davis, Melissa Freeman

The Qualitative Report

Research has shown that youth with low levels of fitness or little interest in organized sports and traditional physical education are more likely to participate in noncompetitive outdoor physical activity. However, little is known about what influences youths’ decisions to participate in these activities. This study examined rural young adolescents’ experiences of participating in noncompetitive outdoor physical activity. In depth qualitative interviews were conducted with young adolescents aged 11-13 years (N = 24) from one rural middle school to elicit detailed descriptions of experiences of participation in outdoor physical activities. Interview transcripts were analyzed inductively and emergent themes related to …

Behavioral Economic Predictors Of Substance-Impaired Driving Among College Substance Users, Jenni B. Teeters Nov 2014

Behavioral Economic Predictors Of Substance-Impaired Driving Among College Substance Users, Jenni B. Teeters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Substance-impaired driving among college students represents a significant public health concern yet little is known about specific theoretical risk factors for driving after substance use among heavy drinking college students. The present study evaluated the hypothesis that substance users with elevated substance demand and steeper delay discounting would be more likely to report driving after substance use. Participants were 419 college students who reported at least one day of past month alcohol or marijuana use. Participants completed two Alcohol Purchase Tasks (APT), a Marijuana Purchase Task, a Delayed Discounting task, and a series of questions regarding driving after substance use. …

Creative Destruction Of Higher Education Institutions, Ronald Ben Johnson Nov 2014

Creative Destruction Of Higher Education Institutions, Ronald Ben Johnson

Journal of Research Initiatives

Creative destruction is the phenomena of constant change through technological and/or process innovations in any given industry. Without strategy and commitment to continuous development, the process of constant change threatens any firm’s ability to establish and sustain competitive advantage over competition. Creative destruction can turn the biggest giants of today into tomorrow’s distant memories. Institutions of higher education cannot escape the tentacles of creative destruction as they are now witnessing their own industry rapidly changing. Some institutions of higher education have responded by strategically adapting while others have remained fiercely intransigent. Dr. Michael E. Porter’s five forces analysis provides …

Cost Estimates Of Foundational Public Health Services: Results From Piloting The Expert Consensus Methodology In Kentucky, C. B. Mamaril, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

We developed a methodology for estimating the resources required to deliver a set of foundational public health capabilities as recommended in the 2012 Institute of Medicine report on public health financing. The capabilities are based on IOM recommendations and defined by a national expert panel convened as part of the Public Health Leadership Forum. This paper presents preliminary estimates from a pilot test of the cost estimation methodology in Kentucky, and outlines plans for the national estimation strategy.

Integrating Community Service Into Scholarship: Youth Engagement By Active Participation Case Study Of Ruwwad, Eunjee Anna Koh

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research project applies Asset-Based Community Development theory to Ruwwad, a community-based organization in Al-Natheef. As a marginalized community, the approach to community development must be investigated to ensure that it does not worsen the community dependency. Through the Myoub Khorma Youth Education and Empowerment Fund, Ruwwad provides scholarships for youth from the neighborhood and surrounding areas. The impact of the scholarship on youth was investigated through conducting student interviews and collected material culture published by the organization. Ruwwad exemplifies an example of asset-based community development in the Middle East and youth have shown that they feel empowered through an …

Therapeutic Targeting Of The Inflammome, Kyle T. Wright, Charles Giardina, Anthony T. Vella Nov 2014

Therapeutic Targeting Of The Inflammome, Kyle T. Wright, Charles Giardina, Anthony T. Vella

UCHC Articles - Research

Inflammatory responses can vary depending on a myriad of factors including: 1) the initiating stimulus or trigger, 2) the cell types, involved in the response, and 3) the specific effector cytokine-chemokine milieus produced. The compilation of these and other factors in a given mechanistic context is sometimes referred to as the “inflammome”. Humans and other higher order mammals have evolved (over time) several discrete inflammomes to counter the effects of pathogens. However, when these inflammomes are induced inappropriately, they drive the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. The vast majority of biological anti-inflammatory treatments currently being developed are focused on the …

I spent at least two hours interviewing Danielle and Mathew Chavez. I think this piece stands out among the articles I've written because it captures a voice that is not often heard. I think it does a great job of telling a story, but also making readers think at the same time.
