In Vivo Identification Of Eugenol-Responsive And Muscone-Responsive Mouse Odorant Receptors, Timothy S. Mcclintock, Kaylin Adipietro, William B. Titlow, Patrick Breheny, Andreas Walz, Peter Mombaerts, Hiroaki Matsunami Nov 2014

In Vivo Identification Of Eugenol-Responsive And Muscone-Responsive Mouse Odorant Receptors, Timothy S. Mcclintock, Kaylin Adipietro, William B. Titlow, Patrick Breheny, Andreas Walz, Peter Mombaerts, Hiroaki Matsunami

Physiology Faculty Publications

Our understanding of mammalian olfactory coding has been impeded by the paucity of information about the odorant receptors (ORs) that respond to a given odorant ligand in awake, freely behaving animals. Identifying the ORs that respond in vivo to a given odorant ligand from among the ∼1100 ORs in mice is intrinsically challenging but critical for our understanding of olfactory coding at the periphery. Here, we report an in vivo assay that is based on a novel gene-targeted mouse strain, S100a5-tauGFP, in which a fluorescent reporter selectively marks olfactory sensory neurons that have been activated recently in vivo. Because each …

Leukocyte Esterase Strip Test: Matched For Musculoskeletal Infection Society Criteria., Eric H Tischler, Priscilla K Cavanaugh, Javad Parvizi Md

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: The presence of leukocyte esterase in the synovial fluid has recently been proposed as a marker for periprosthetic joint infection. However, the sensitivity and specificity of leukocyte esterase has not been determined when matched for the current, most inclusive Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) criteria for periprosthetic joint infection.

METHODS: The presence of leukocyte esterase was prospectively evaluated in synovial joint aspirates from hips and knees from May 2009 to May 2013. The cohort consisted of 189 hip and knee aspirations (fifty-two positive and 137 negative for infection). If the aspirate was bloody, a centrifuge was used to precipitate red …

Publications and Research

Viruses readily mutate and gain the ability to infect novel hosts, but few data are available regarding the number of possible host range-expanding mutations allowing infection of any given novel host, and the fitness consequences of these mutations on original and novel hosts. To gain insight into the process of host range expansion, we isolated and sequenced 69 independent mutants of the dsRNA bacteriophage Φ6 able to infect the novel host, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes. In total, we found at least 17 unique suites of mutations among these 69 mutants. We assayed fitness for 13 of 17 mutant genotypes on P. pseudoalcaligenes …

Host, Pathogen, And Environmental Characteristics Predict White-Nose Syndrome Mortality In Captive Little Brown Myotis (Myotis Lucifugus), Joseph S. Johnson, Deeann M. Reeder, James W. Mcmichael Iii Nov 2014

Host, Pathogen, And Environmental Characteristics Predict White-Nose Syndrome Mortality In Captive Little Brown Myotis (Myotis Lucifugus), Joseph S. Johnson, Deeann M. Reeder, James W. Mcmichael Iii

KIP Articles

An estimated 5.7 million or more bats died in North America between 2006 and 2012 due to infection with the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) that causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) during hibernation. The behavioral and physiological changes associated with hibernation leave bats vulnerable to WNS, but the persistence of bats within the contaminated regions of North America suggests that survival might vary predictably among individuals or in relation to environmental conditions. To investigate variables influencing WNS mortality, we conducted a captive study of 147 little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) inoculated with 0, 500, 5 000, 50 000, or 500 000 Pd …

Glucose Significantly Enhances Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli Adherence To Intestinal Epithelial Cells Through Its Effects On Heat-Labile Enterotoxin Production, Prageeth Wijemanne, Rodney A. Moxley Nov 2014

Glucose Significantly Enhances Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli Adherence To Intestinal Epithelial Cells Through Its Effects On Heat-Labile Enterotoxin Production, Prageeth Wijemanne, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The present study tested whether exposure of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) to glucose at different concentrations in the media results in increased bacterial adherence to host cells through increased heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) production, thereby suggesting the effects are physiological. Porcine-origin ETEC strains grown in Casamino acid yeast extract medium containing different concentrations of glucose were washed and inoculated onto IPEC-J2 porcine intestinal epithelial cells to test for effects on adherence and host cell cAMP concentrations. Consistent with previous studies, all LT+ strains had higher ETEC adherence to IPEC-J2 cells than did LT2 strains. Adherence of the LT2 but not the …

Two-Slot Coiled Coaxial Cable Resonator: Reaching Critical Coupling At A Reduced Number Of Coils, Gerald Hefferman, Zhen Chen, Tao Wei Nov 2014

Two-Slot Coiled Coaxial Cable Resonator: Reaching Critical Coupling At A Reduced Number Of Coils, Gerald Hefferman, Zhen Chen, Tao Wei

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper reports the experimental demonstration of a coiled coaxial cable resonator capable of meeting the critical coupling condition using a reduced number of coils relative to previously reported coiled resonators. By introducing a second slot along the length of the device, a two-slot coiled coaxial cable resonator was fabricated and critical coupling observed at 22 turns. An additional device with one-slot, but otherwise identically constructed, was also fabricated. After 44 turns, the one-slot device had yet to reach critical coupling. An ultrahigh signal-to-noise ratio (greater than 70 dB) was observed at critical coupling of the two-slot device. This reduction …

What Are Students Perceptions Of Their First-Year Experience In Relation To Support They Receive From The Fashion Institute Of Technology, Joshua Jacob Wilkin Nov 2014

What Are Students Perceptions Of Their First-Year Experience In Relation To Support They Receive From The Fashion Institute Of Technology, Joshua Jacob Wilkin

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Student affairs professionals view the first-year experience as a beneficial program that assists college students with their academic and personal development. While there have been many qualitative studies (Meyer, Spencer, & French, 2009; Stebleton, Jensen, & Peter, 2010; Corella, 2010) and quantitative studies (Hendel, 2007; Woolsey & Miller, 2009; Morrow & Ackerman, 2012) regarding first-year experience programs, much of this research has focused on retention instead of how students’ experiences can be affected by their sense of belonging to their particular institution.

The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions of their first-year experience in relation to …

The Effects Of Videocasts On Student Learning In Medical Health Science Discipline, Jessica Viana Nov 2014

The Effects Of Videocasts On Student Learning In Medical Health Science Discipline, Jessica Viana

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This quantitative study examines the effects of videocasts on student learning in a medical healthcare science discipline. The didactic nature of educational strategies is necessary in preparing future healthcare professionals. However, the manual skills cannot be reviewed once the student has left the classroom. Incorporating the use of videocasts into the resources for student learning adds another means for the students to follow and retain the skills acquired during class. Athletic training students in two accredited programs performed two class presentations over the course of one semester, one in the traditional format and one with the use of videocasts. The …

Manifestations And Implications Of Uncertainty For Improving Healthcare Systems: An Analysis Of Observational And Interventional Studies Grounded In Complexity Science, Kurt C. Stange Nov 2014

Manifestations And Implications Of Uncertainty For Improving Healthcare Systems: An Analysis Of Observational And Interventional Studies Grounded In Complexity Science, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

BACKGROUND: The application of complexity science to understanding healthcare system improvement highlights the need to consider interdependencies within the system. One important aspect of the interdependencies in healthcare delivery systems is how individuals relate to each other. However, results from our observational and interventional studies focusing on relationships to understand and improve outcomes in a variety of healthcare settings have been inconsistent. We sought to better understand and explain these inconsistencies by analyzing our findings across studies and building new theory.METHODS: We analyzed eight observational and interventional studies in which our author team was involved as the basis of our …

A Comparative Effectiveness Secondary Data Analysis: Selected Short Term Economic And Clinical Outcomes Of Rapid Surgical Intervention In The Geriatric Fracture Population, Susan Elizabeth Dries Nov 2014

A Comparative Effectiveness Secondary Data Analysis: Selected Short Term Economic And Clinical Outcomes Of Rapid Surgical Intervention In The Geriatric Fracture Population, Susan Elizabeth Dries

Theses & Dissertations

The percentage of the U.S. population that is over 65 years of age is expected increase to over 20% by 2040. Within that geriatric population, 50% of women and 20% of men will experience osteoporotic fractures. The cost of their care is estimated in billions of dollars annually. The outcomes from osteoporotic fractures account for more morbidity than all cancers, except lung cancer, combined.

Rapid surgical intervention protocols, which reduce the time between fracture and surgical repair, are intended to improve outcomes and reduce costs. The protocols require intense care coordination and their effectiveness has not been unequivocally established. This …
