Anti-Gravity Treadmill And Functional Training For An Army Soldier Following A Femoroplasty And Labral Repair: A Case Report, Christopher Halloran Nov 2014

Anti-Gravity Treadmill And Functional Training For An Army Soldier Following A Femoroplasty And Labral Repair: A Case Report, Christopher Halloran

Case Report Posters

Background/Purpose: Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI) is characterized by three specific types of impingement between the head of the femur and acetabulum. Cam impingement occurs when the head of the femur is abnormally shaped. The head of the femur isn’t round, it is more of a pistol grip shape. It's even referred to as a pistol grip deformity. Due to this abnormal shape, the head of the femur cannot move properly in the anatomically designed ball-and-socket joint. The result is a shearing force on the labrum and the articular cartilage. Minimal amounts of articles were found that truly utilized physical therapy …

Physical Therapy Outcomes In A 28 Year Old Male With A Femoral Neck Fracture Using Aquatic And Land-Based Therapeutic Exercise: A Case Study, Daniel Johnson

Case Report Posters

Background: Hip fractures occur in approximately 341,000 persons each year in the U.S. Hip fractures at a young age are uncommon and are usually the result of a high-velocity injury or, rarely, secondary to bone pathology. Morbidity associated with an inability to return to a pre-fracture level of mobility often results in a loss of independence, reduction in quality of life, and depression. There is a lack of available literature on the physical therapy management of hip fractures in the younger patient population. Purpose: The purpose of this case report was to investigate the physical therapy management of a 28 …

The androgen receptor (AR) plays a central role in establishing an oncogenic cascade that drives prostate cancer progression. Some prostate cancers escape androgen dependence and are often associated with an aggressive phenotype. The oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is expressed in prostate cancers, independent of AR status. However, the role of ERα remains elusive. Using a combination of chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and RNA-sequencing data, we identified an ERα-specific non-coding transcriptome signature. Among putatively ERα-regulated intergenic long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), we identified nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) as the most significantly overexpressed lncRNA in prostate cancer. Analysis of two large clinical …

Direct assessment of allelic phase for DNA and RNA features of diploid genomes has been challenging for Sanger sequencing, due to its allele-conflating base-calling signal. Massively parallel sequencing technologies are based on the generation of a continuous copy of a single strand sequence segments, thus preserving the allelic relation between the features of the original molecules. We have performed a transcriptome-wide search for co-occurrence of variant nucleotides and exon-intron boundaries positioned within the length of a single sequencing read. Analysis of 75 human transcriptomes from retinal pigment epithelia (RPE), glioblastoma, low-grade brain tumor, breast cancer and colon cancer, have identified …

An Investigation Into The Implementation Of The Instructional Consultation Team Model, Kathleen A. Senita Nov 2014

An Investigation Into The Implementation Of The Instructional Consultation Team Model, Kathleen A. Senita

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The reauthorization of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004 made Response to Intervention (RtI) an acceptable alternative for identifying students with specific learning disabilities (SLD). The purpose of this study was to examine one particular problem-solving approach, Instructional Consultation (IC) teams within an RtI framework, to determine the knowledge, skills, and beliefs of teachers and administrators about this model and its effect in identifying and supporting students with learning disabilities between two elementary schools in one Michigan school district.

Interviews were done with a typical case sampling of interviewees from within both buildings. Interviewees were both participants …

Recent meta-analyses have found no association between heart disease and dietary saturated fat; however, higher proportions of plasma saturated fatty acids (SFA) predict greater risk for developing type-2 diabetes and heart disease. These observations suggest a disconnect between dietary saturated fat and plasma SFA, but few controlled feeding studies have specifically examined how varying saturated fat intake across a broad range affects circulating SFA levels. Sixteen adults with metabolic syndrome (age 44.9±9.9 yr, BMI 37.9±6.3 kg/m2) were fed six 3-wk diets that progressively increased carbohydrate (from 47 to 346 g/day) with concomitant decreases in total and saturated fat. Despite a …

Perceived Leadership Qualities As Hiring Criteria For Athletic Trainers At Ncaa Institutions In The Southeast Region Of The United States, Katherine Ann Gonzalez

Student Theses and Dissertations

In sport organizations, those in authority such as athletic directors and athletic trainers should possess concrete leadership styles in order to maintain effectiveness of the organization (Kickul & Newman, 2000). Hiring employees that possess similar or compatible leadership attributes to the employer will help produce a positive, productive workplace. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hiring criteria characteristics in assistant athletic trainers at NCAA institutions in the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association and to assess leadership qualities as main determinants for hiring. The 138 head athletic trainers at Divisions I, II, and III NCAA institutions that make up the …

We have developed an improved tool for imaging acidic tumors by reporting the insertion of a transmembrane helix: the pHLIP-Fluorescence Insertion REporter (pHLIP-FIRE). In acidic tissues, such as tumors, peptides in the pHLIP family insert as α-helices across cell membranes. The cell-inserting end of the pHLIP-FIRE peptide has a fluorophore-fluorophore or fluorophore-quencher pair. A pair member is released by disulfide cleavage after insertion into the reducing environment inside a cell, resulting in dequenching of the probe. Thus, the fluorescence of the pHLIP-FIRE probe is enhanced upon cell-insertion in the targeted tissues but is suppressed elsewhere due to quenching. Targeting studies …

Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are mainstay therapeutics for HIV that block retrovirus replication. Alu (an endogenous retroelement that also requires reverse transcriptase for its life cycle)–derived RNAs activate P2X7 and the NLRP3 inflammasome to cause cell death of the retinal pigment epithelium in geographic atrophy, a type of age-related macular degeneration. We found that NRTIs inhibit P2X7-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation independent of reverse transcriptase inhibition. Multiple approved and clinically relevant NRTIs prevented caspase-1 activation, the effector of the NLRP3 inflammasome, induced by Alu RNA. NRTIs were efficacious in mouse models of geographic atrophy, choroidal neovascularization, graft-versus-host disease, and sterile …

Effects Of Audience Presence On Running Performance, Lane Thielemier Nov 2014

Effects Of Audience Presence On Running Performance, Lane Thielemier

Student Theses and Dissertations

The effect an audience has on performance has received a wave of attention in past years. Social facilitation studies suggest that when people are in the presence of an audience, whether interacting or not, they will perform at higher levels if the task is familiar to them. Furthermore, these studies have found that when a task is unfamiliar to the individual performance will be inhibited. Seventeen males underwent a study to test their running performance in which they ran for twelve minutes on a treadmill in three different variable settings. Results revealed that there was no significant difference in distance …
