Balance And Functional Skill Training For A Patient With Cognitive Dysfunction And Impaired Safety Awareness: A Case Report, Cameron Mccombs
Case Report Posters
Background: With advances in medicine, there are increasing numbers of people living who have had a stroke. One of the major factors that can limit improvement is cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive rehabilitation in conjunction with large amounts of repetition can result in lasting neuronal changes. Purpose: The purpose of this case study is to describe the decision making process for physical therapy examination and intervention for a patient who had a stroke with accompanying cognitive dysfunction and decreased
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization And Conservative Management Of Shoulder Pain In An Elderly Male: A Case Report, Dana Mccoy
Case Report Posters
Background: Shoulder pain is a frequent complaint among the elderly population, numerous etiologies cause shoulder joint pain such as osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis, and rotator cuff disease (impingement, tendonitis, and cuff tear). A conservative treatment for shoulder pathology is Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization (ASTM) that uses specifically designed sold instruments to perform manual therapy. Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM®) is a technique which uses ceramic polymer tools with resonating capability. Limited evidence exists to support the use of SASTM® as a manual therapy treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to illustrate the physical therapy management of shoulder …

Changes in the US Healthcare System along with the need for institutions of higher education to prepare a work force ready to address the challenges of today and tomorrow have highlighted the need to incorporate technology in its broadest sense as part of the student learning experience. In health professional education, this becomes challenging as programs have traditionally relied on face-to-face instruction along with internship experiences which provide hands on patient care. In addition, learning activities that incorporate higher order critical thinking must be incorporated in order to meet competency based professional expectations as well as expectations in the work …

This review presents the mechanistic underpinnings of corticospinal tract (CST) development, derived from animal models, and applies what has been learned to inform neural activity-based strategies for CST repair. We first discuss that, in normal development, early bilateral CST projections are later refined into a dense crossed CST projection, with maintenance of sparse ipsilateral projections. Using a novel mouse genetic model, we show that promoting the ipsilateral CST projection produces mirror movements, common in hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP), suggesting that ipsilateral CST projections become maladaptive when they become abnormally dense and strong. We next discuss howanimal studies support a developmental “competition rule” …

Background Over the past ten years, there has been an explosion of microbiome research. Many software packages for analyzing microbial sequences such as the 16S gene from 454 sequencers and Illumina platforms are available. But for a new researcher, it is difficult to know which package to choose. We present a systematic review of packages for the analysis of molecular sequences used to describe and compare microbial communities. This review gives students and researchers information to help choose the best analytic pipeline for their project. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of such software.

Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun
Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
The current study aimed to explore the relationships between parental involvement during adolescence on sexual behaviors among college students. Research has shown that parental involvement decreases as students move from high school to college, but the impact that parents had on their students while in high school continues into college. It is important to determine if one factor relating to the number of sexual partners, sexual activity, and contraceptive use is parental involvement during adolescence. After approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), an online survey using Survey Monkey was administered to a convenience sample of undergraduate students in a …

Introduction Optimal identification of subtle cognitive impairment in the primary care setting requires a very brief tool combining (a) patients- subjective impairments, (b) cognitive testing, and (c) information from informants. The present study developed a new, very quick and easily administered case-finding tool combining these assessments ('BrainCheck') and tested the feasibility and validity of this instrument in two independent studies.
Methods We developed a case-finding tool comprised of patient-directed (a) questions about memory and depression and (b) clock drawing, and (c) the informant-directed 7-item version of the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE). Feasibility study: 52 general …
Tailoring General Population Surveys To Address Participation And Measurement Challenges Of Surveying Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Mathew Stange
Tailoring General Population Surveys To Address Participation And Measurement Challenges Of Surveying Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Mathew Stange
Survey Research and Methodology Program: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Being rare and stigmatized, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people are hard-to-survey. Gaining their participation, reducing concealment of LGB identity, and accurately measuring their marital status are challenging. In this dissertation, I examine the effects that LGB-inclusive tailoring—inclusive cover image design and “same-sex” and “opposite-sex” marital status categories—has on addressing these challenges; particularly, the effect on who responds to a survey and the answers that they provide, among LGB and non-LGB people. The experiments were embedded in the 2013 Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS), a general population mail survey of Nebraskans (n=1,608). I test how the LGB-inclusive cover design …

Central Role Of Carotid Body Chemoreceptors In Disordered Breathing And Cardiorenal Dysfunction In Chronic Heart Failure., Noah J. Marcus, Rodrigo Del Rio, Harold D. Schultz
Central Role Of Carotid Body Chemoreceptors In Disordered Breathing And Cardiorenal Dysfunction In Chronic Heart Failure., Noah J. Marcus, Rodrigo Del Rio, Harold D. Schultz
Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology
Oscillatory breathing (OB) patterns are observed in pre-term infants, patients with cardio-renal impairment, and in otherwise healthy humans exposed to high altitude. Enhanced carotid body (CB) chemoreflex sensitivity is common to all of these populations and is thought to contribute to these abnormal patterns by destabilizing the respiratory control system. OB patterns in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients are associated with greater levels of tonic and chemoreflex-evoked sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), which is associated with greater morbidity and poor prognosis. Enhanced chemoreflex drive may contribute to tonic elevations in SNA by strengthening the relationship between respiratory and sympathetic neural outflow. …
Qualitative Perspectives Toward Relational Connection In Pastoral Ministry, Jonathan W. Young, Michael W. Firmin
Qualitative Perspectives Toward Relational Connection In Pastoral Ministry, Jonathan W. Young, Michael W. Firmin
The Qualitative Report
We present the results of a phenomenological, qualitative research study in which 13 Southern Baptist (SB) pastors were administered in-depth interviews. The sample was selected from a total of 37 exemplars, identified in the quantitative component of a larger mixed-methods study, regarding the pastors’ perspectives toward relational connection in pastoral ministry. Three themes emerged from the data regarding relational connection in pastoral ministry. First, pastors indicated the need to be intentional about pastoral connection. Second, the pastors stressed the importance of being available to congregants who specifically desire pastoral connection. Finally, the participants related that pastors should give particular attention …

What. What. What. Clinical Judgment In Tanzanian Nurse Education, R. Kent Thompson
Theses
This study explored two facets of clinical judgment in Tanzanian nurse education. The first was to examine the perceptions of Tanzanian nurses regarding the use of clinical judgment during their nursing education. The second purpose was to scrutinize perceived benefits and obstacles of establishing approaches to the development of clinical judgment in Tanzanian nurses. The sample consisted of ten Tanzanian nurses whose experience ranged from two to eighteen years. A qualitative research design of phenomenology was used in designing a semi-structured interview guide to conduct the interviews
