Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy Through The Voice Of Adolescent Clients In A Community Mental Health Center, Jessica Riedel Chenoweth
Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy Through The Voice Of Adolescent Clients In A Community Mental Health Center, Jessica Riedel Chenoweth
Dissertations
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has recently been shown to be an effective therapy for treating adolescents with suicidal and self-harming behaviors. Despite the growing interest of DBT, there is a lack of research on the subjective experiences of DBT from the perspectives of adolescent clients. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how adolescents experienced DBT in a community mental health setting. Using constructivist, case study methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine adolescent participants. Findings emerged from the shared experiences of the participants including themes related to treatment modality, use of skills, and the impact of …
The Experience Of Registered Nurses During Their First Year As Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Students, Catherine Lewis Witt
The Experience Of Registered Nurses During Their First Year As Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Students, Catherine Lewis Witt
Dissertations
Many neonatal intensive care nurseries require neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) to manage care of premature and sick neonates. The supply of NNPs has consistently lagged behind the demand for their services and the current number of projected graduates from NNP programs is unlikely to meet the demand. Neonatal nurse practitioner students are required to have two years of experience as a registered nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit prior to beginning a NNP program. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of registered nurses during their first year as neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) students. This …

Using a collective case study approach, interviews were conducted with a total of 23 campus activities staff members and six senior student affairs officers at four institutions achieving comprehensive recognition for excellence in campus activities programs from one professional association. Administrators explored Boyer’s (1990) frames of scholarship and shared experiences with the engagement with the four frames of scholarship in their daily work. Findings presented highlight a strong identification between participants and the scholarship of teaching, moderate engagement with application and …
Evidence And Extrapolation: Mechanisms For Regulating Off-Label Uses Of Drugs And Devices, Ryan Abbott, Ian Ayres
Evidence And Extrapolation: Mechanisms For Regulating Off-Label Uses Of Drugs And Devices, Ryan Abbott, Ian Ayres
Duke Law Journal
A recurring, foundational issue for evidence-based regulation is deciding whether to extend governmental approval from an existing use with sufficient current evidence of safety and efficacy to a novel use for which such evidence is currently lacking. This "extrapolation" issue arises in the medicines context when an approved drug or device that is already being marketed is being considered (1) for new conditions (such as off-label diagnostic categories), (2) for new patients (such as new subpopulations), (3) for new dosages or durations, or (4) as the basis for approving a related drug or device (such as a generic or biosimilar …

Hipaa: Caught In The Cross Fire, Stephanie E. Pearl
Duke Law Journal
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is nearly synonymous with patient privacy. In contrast, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), a provision of the Gun Control Act of 1968, demands the disclosure of information about individuals, including mental-health information, that may prohibit their purchase of firearms.
These two statutes raise the following question: what if NICS requires or recommends the reporting of information protected by HIPAA? In the wake of recent gun violence by mentally disabled individuals, governmental and nongovernmental organizations have questioned whether HIPAA's privacy provisions have stultified national gun-control measures by prohibiting the reporting …

Reducing Eating Disorder Risk Factors: A Controlled Investigation Of A Blended Task-Shifting/Train-The-Trainer Approach To Dissemination And Implementation, Lisa S. Kilpela, Kaitlin Hill, Mackenzie Kelly, Joanna Elmquist, Paige Ottoson, D. Keith, Thomas Hildebrandt, Carolyn Becker
Psychology Faculty Research
Recent advances in psychological intervention research have led to an increase in evidence-based interventions (EBIs), yet there remains a lag in dissemination and implementation of EBIs. Task-shifting and the train-the-trainer (TTT) model offer two potential strategies for enhancing reach of EBIs. The Body Project, an EBI found to prevent onset of eating disorders, served as the vehicle for this dissemination/implementation study. The primary aim of this study was to determine if training of peer-leaders for the Body Project could be task-shifted to undergraduate students using a hybrid task-shifting/TTT model. Our secondary aim was to determine if subgroups of participants evidenced …
Classroom Amplification: The Necessity Of Sound-Amplification In The Classroom, Kalley Ellis
Classroom Amplification: The Necessity Of Sound-Amplification In The Classroom, Kalley Ellis
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In a classroom, the optimal signal-to-noise ratio, as is recommended by the American Nation Standards Institute (ANSI), is 35 dBA, with the reverberation reaching a maximum of 0.6s (Lewis, 2008); yet, in classrooms today, the typical signal-to-noise ratio ranges from 40-73 dBA (Lewis, 2008). With at least 75% of the school day being spent in listening activities (e.g. reading, instructions, lecture, etc.), this noise level in the classroom has great impact on what a child hears and, thus, learns (Blazer, 2008). Unfortunately, with each new year, classroom sizes are increasing and creating an even more detrimental noise level and signal-to-noise …
Engaging Wisdom: A Comparison Of Cognitive And Interpersonal Interventions On Elderly Mental Health, Kade Downs
Engaging Wisdom: A Comparison Of Cognitive And Interpersonal Interventions On Elderly Mental Health, Kade Downs
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the United States the population of individuals over the age of 60 is large and expected to increase (Administration on Aging, 2009). Mental disorders (e.g., dementia) are especially prevalent in elderly populations (WHO, 2012). Considering the relatively small amount of research examining elderly populations in the United States, this prevalence highlights the potential and necessity for intervention research specifically designed for elderly individuals. This study examines the effectiveness of a cognitive as well as an interpersonal intervention on the mental health of a sample of individuals over the age of 60 at residential eldercare facilities. Results showed no significant …

Reforming The Performance Of Masculinity: Stephen Crane's Critiques Of Riis's And Roosevelt's Civic Militarism, Cambri Mcdonald Spear
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The Progressive Era (1890-1920) marks a unique period of social change in American history not only because of reformists' muckraking attacks against political machines and other corrupt social practices, but also because gender permeated every aspect of reform. The doctrine of separate spheres, which had been such a mainstay of Industrial Revolution-era America, was blurring rapidly, as many reformists, like suffragists, pressed for greater gender equality. However, an extremely fascinating characteristic of this period that is often overlooked is the inevitable way in which the performance of gender became essential for reformists to be successful.

A burgeoning vein of research assesses links between familial support and psychosocial health among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) individuals. This study is a cross-sectional, multi-method survey that examined these associations in highly religious families. Participants were 587 individuals who identified as LGBTQ, were affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), and were between the ages of 18 and 30. Reports of early support from families were significantly associated with various measures of psychosocial health, more consistently for men than women. In addition, participants provided written narratives in response to an …
Barriers To Women In Economic Development, Rachel Ann Rawlings
Barriers To Women In Economic Development, Rachel Ann Rawlings
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The focus of my research is on Ghana, because I completed a microfinance internship there. The methodology of this research is a combination of direct observation, interviews, and secondary research. Women in Ghana are limited from obtaining greater economic power by formal and informal barriers. Formal barriers are systematic exclusions from resources that prevent women from pursuing greater levels of power, specifically lack of access to capital and unstable political institutions. Informal barriers are perceived by individuals or societies but are not evidenced in the societal structure. Informal barriers that hinder women from progress include community restraints regarding the role …
Targeted Drug Delivery System For Kidney And/Or Liver Failure Patients Using Human Serum Albumin, Sean Bedingfield
Targeted Drug Delivery System For Kidney And/Or Liver Failure Patients Using Human Serum Albumin, Sean Bedingfield
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Compromised liver and/or kidney function reduces the acceptable dosage of a variety of medications that can be administered to patients. These patients still have a need for drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antivirals, and antibiotics. The project goal is to provide a drug delivery system to accommodate these reduced dosage limits with added therapeutic benefits to address symptoms of liver or kidney failure. Localized drug delivery allows for a smaller, concentrated dose rather than inundating the patient's system with the drug of interest. Human serum albumin (HSA) is a researched candidate for drug delivery with therapeutic properties. HSA …
Low-Impact Infrastructure: Development And Design Potential For Surface Application Alternatives For Subsurface Infrastructure In Yellowstone National Park's Upper Geyser Basin, Michael R. Pace
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In sensitive and iconic landscapes, such as Yellowstone National Park’s Upper Geyser Basin, construction and expansion of visitor services is hindered, and often blocked, by the potential for environmental damage that could occur during the installation of subsurface utilities. These utilities, crucial to the success of development, require an alternative method of installation when placed in locations requiring special consideration and protection.
Yellowstone, in particular, is faced with the responsibility of protecting limited hydrothermal resources while also providing access to the general public. Sub-surface utilities threaten this responsibility due to the unknown nature of much of the subsurface

Teaching Communication: Helping Students To Learn And To Love A New Language, Jacob Fredrickson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This portfolio represents many hours spent in classrooms (as a student and as a teacher), in the library reading and writing, and spent in quiet contemplation. My views on teaching languages and on education in general have grown and changed. What a tragedy it would be to pass through a graduate program and not to have one’s views evolve and grow. Most importantly, this portfolio represents that growth and the ideal that, as an educator and as a human being, time on this earth ought to be spent growing, learning, and striving for something better.
A Secure Communication System For Early Childhood Collaboration System, Hao Kang
A Secure Communication System For Early Childhood Collaboration System, Hao Kang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Early Childhood collaboration System (ECCS) is a distributed health data system which provides coordinated, de-identified healthcare information to various types of data consumers. To satisfy this requirement, the ECCS needs a matcher that utilizes Personal Identifying Information (PII) to coordinate information from a wide range of data sources. Due to the sensitivity of PII, the ECCS also needs to guarantee that only matcher can access PII. This report describes a reusable subsystem, called Medical Records Secure Messaging (MRSecureMessaging), which utilizes a reliable cryptographic algorithm to encrypt PII and other confidential data so that matcher and data consumers cannot access …

Reversible Blockade Of Complex I Or Inhibition Of Pkcβ Reduces Activation And Mitochondria Translocation Of P66Shc To Preserve Cardiac Function After Ischemia, Meiying Yang, David F. Stowe, Kenechukwu B. Udoh, James S. Heisner, Amadou K.S. Camara
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Aim
Excess mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) play a vital role in cardiac ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury. P66Shc, a splice variant of the ShcA adaptor protein family, enhances mROS production by oxidizing reduced cytochrome c to yield H2O2. Ablation of p66Shc protects against IR injury, but it is unknown if and when p66Shc is activated during cardiac ischemia and/or reperfusion and if attenuating complex I electron transfer or deactivating PKCβ alters p66Shc activation during IR is associated with cardioprotection.
Methods
Isolated guinea pig hearts were perfused and subjected to increasing periods …

A Behavioral Database For Masked Form Priming, Js Adelman, Rl Johnson, Sf Mccormick, M Mckague, Et Al
School of Psychology
Reading involves a process of matching an orthographic input with stored representations in lexical memory. The masked priming paradigm has become a standard tool for investigating this process. Use of existing results from this paradigm can be limited by the precision of the data and the need for cross-experiment comparisons that lack normal experimental controls. Here, we present a single, large, high-precision, multicondition experiment to address these problems. Over 1,000 participants from 14 sites responded to 840 trials involving 28 different types of orthographically related primes (e.g., castfe–CASTLE) in a lexical decision task, as well as completing measures of spelling …
Managing Warehouse Utilization: An Analysis Of Key Warehouse Resources, Vitaly Brazhkin
Managing Warehouse Utilization: An Analysis Of Key Warehouse Resources, Vitaly Brazhkin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The warehousing industry is extremely important to businesses and the economy as a whole, and while there is a great deal of literature exploring individual operations within warehouses, such as warehouse layout and design, order picking, etc., there is very little literature exploring warehouse operations from a systems approach.
This study uses the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to develop a focused resource management approach to increasing warehouse capacity and throughput, and thus overall warehouse performance, in an environment of limited warehouse resources. While TOC was originally developed for reducing operational bottlenecks in manufacturing, it has allowed companies in other industries, …
