There are contemporary concerns about improving and sustaining positive student outcomes in secondary schools today. In light of student needs and limited time and resources available to address those needs, educational leaders are faced with making difficult decisions about what should and could be offered to students through their schools. In addition to the general curriculum, schools generally offer a variety of extracurricular activities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between extracurricular participation and select student outcomes. The findings of this study can provide valuable insight to school leaders as they make decisions about how to …

A Creative Problem Solving Toolkit For Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Miriam S. Hoffman Dec 2014

A Creative Problem Solving Toolkit For Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Miriam S. Hoffman

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Abstract of Project

A Creative Problem Solving Toolkit for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors

Rebuilding and recreating one’s mental and physical life after traumatic brain injury is one of the most daunting of human experiences. At the same time, this is a perfect opportunity to adopt a creative life. With a mumble-jumble of seemingly random thoughts without much rhyme nor reason post-TBI, retraining one’s brain to deliberately establish a “new normal” life can be enhanced with the deliberate process of Creative Problem Solving. Working with a balance of divergent and convergent thinking, the major premise of creative problem solving, in …

Bearing Children, Bearing Risks: Feminist Leadership For Progressive Regulation Of Compensated Surrogacy In The United States, Sara L. Ainsworth Dec 2014

Bearing Children, Bearing Risks: Feminist Leadership For Progressive Regulation Of Compensated Surrogacy In The United States, Sara L. Ainsworth

Washington Law Review

Compensated surrogacy—an arrangement in which a woman carries and gives birth to a child for someone else in exchange for money—intimately affects women. Yet, feminist law reformers have not led efforts to regulate this practice in the United States. Their absence is notable given the significant influence of feminist lawmaking in a host of other areas where women’s interests are at stake. This lack of feminist law reform leadership can be understood, however, in light of the complex issues that surrogacy raises—complexity that has long divided feminists. In response to efforts to pass surrogacy legislation in Washington State in 2010, …

For A Feminist Considering Surrogacy, Is Compensation Really The Key Question?, Julie Shapiro Dec 2014

For A Feminist Considering Surrogacy, Is Compensation Really The Key Question?, Julie Shapiro

Washington Law Review

Feminists have long been engaged in the debates over surrogacy. During the past thirty years, thousands of women throughout the world have served as surrogate mothers. The experience of these women has been studied by academics in law and in the social sciences. It is apparent that if properly conducted, surrogacy can be a rewarding experience for women and hence should not be objectionable to feminists. Improperly conducted, however, surrogacy can be a form of exploitation. Compensation is not the distinguishing factor. In this essay I offer two changes to law that would improve the surrogate’s experience of surrogacy. First, …

Rheumatoid Arthritis In Saudi Arabia, Hani M. Almoallim, Laila A. Alharbi Dec 2014

Rheumatoid Arthritis In Saudi Arabia, Hani M. Almoallim, Laila A. Alharbi

Saudi Medical Journal

The status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Saudi Arabia (SA) was examined from various perspectives based on a systematic literature review and the authors’ personal experiences. In this regard, database and journal search were conducted to identify studies on RA in SA, yielding a total of 43 articles. Although efforts have been made to promote RA research in SA, current studies mostly represent only a few centers and may not accurately portray the national status of RA care. Notably, biological therapies were introduced early for almost all practicing rheumatologists in SA (government and private). However, no national guidelines regarding the …

Bedside Reporting, Melanie Krentz Dec 2014

Bedside Reporting, Melanie Krentz

Theses and Dissertations

Some might say that the complexity of health care as we know it exceeds the capacity of \ .). the human mind. As a result, the process of communication within health care organizations is equally as complex and to a large degree, challenging. Specifically, the patent handoff is particularly problematic and may be defined as " the process of transferring care and accountability for a patient from one health care professional to another'' (Jukkala, James, Autrey, Azuero, & Miltner, 2012, p.240). The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of bedside reporting after identifying the importance and ongoing …

Background: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is necessary for the improvement of the health of patients and for public health. We sought to determine the comparative effectiveness of different interventions for improving ART adherence in HIV-infected people living in Africa.

Methods: We searched for randomised trials of interventions to promote antiretroviral adherence within adults in Africa. We searched AMED, CINAHL, Embase, Medline (via PubMed), and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to Oct 31, 2014, with the terms “HIV”, “ART”, “adherence”, and “Africa”. We created a network of the interventions by pooling the published and individual patients' data for comparable treatments and comparing …

The Transtheoretical Model And Stages Of Change: Predicting The Accuracy Of The Stages Of Change Scale For Early Education And Care 2.0 Self-Report Form, Lynn M. Lubecki Dec 2014

The Transtheoretical Model And Stages Of Change: Predicting The Accuracy Of The Stages Of Change Scale For Early Education And Care 2.0 Self-Report Form, Lynn M. Lubecki

Education Doctoral

Challenging behaviors in preschool are of great concern to both preschool teachers and the social and emotional development of children who exhibit those behaviors. Evidence-based responses to challenging behaviors exist, but are only effective when implemented as response strategies by preschool teachers in the classroom. Professional development in-services are the often the source of delivery for evidence based practices, and the adoption and implementation of those practices often depend upon teachers’ readiness and willingness to change their practice. For this study, a comparison was conducted between the Stage of Change Scale for Early Care and Education 2.0 self-report and qualitative …

Aminoglycoside-Induced Otoneurotoxicity: Analysis Of Inner Hair Cell Synaptic Plasticity Following Drug Exposure, Matthew M. Abernathy Dec 2014

Aminoglycoside-Induced Otoneurotoxicity: Analysis Of Inner Hair Cell Synaptic Plasticity Following Drug Exposure, Matthew M. Abernathy

Dissertations

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are powerful drugs for combating bacterial infections, but are limited in use due to their ototoxicity. This class of drug targets the auditory hair cells of the cochlea, causing cell death, which leads to a decline in auditory function. In spite of much research aimed at revealing a mechanism of damage, there are no co-therapies available to diminish the ototoxic liability of aminoglycosides. Existing research does show that there may be a neurodegenerative process that contributes to the observed toxicity. In an effort towards clarifying present understanding of issue, this dissertation project was conducted to characterize the neurodegenerative …

Probing The Unfolding And The Stability Of The Last Four Metal Binding Domains Of Wilson Disease Protein Using Circular Dichroism And Novel Spectroscopic Techniques, Ibtesam Yaseen Alja’Afreh Dec 2014

Probing The Unfolding And The Stability Of The Last Four Metal Binding Domains Of Wilson Disease Protein Using Circular Dichroism And Novel Spectroscopic Techniques, Ibtesam Yaseen Alja’Afreh

Dissertations

Wilson disease protein is a copper-transporting P1B type ATPase. It has large N-terminal copper binding domain which is composed of six homologous sub-domains. Each of these six domains is ~72 residues and connected to one another by linking regions of various lengths. They all possess similar ferrodoxin fold, and metal-binding motif, MXCXXC.

The need of having six metal binding domains and the manner in which they are communicating with each other is not well understood. To better understand how the last four metal binding domains function, I pursued a detailed biophysical characterization of these domains. Using molecular biology I …

Processes, Tools, And Procedures Section 504 Coordinators Use Tocreate And Provide Uniformity Of Section 504 Requirements Across Their Districts, Caroline Breault-Cannon

Dissertations

For public schools to receive federal funds, districts must develop and implement policies that assure a free and appropriate public education to all children including those with disabilities ages three through 21. This can be accomplished through special education or Section 504 policies and services. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe and interpret the processes, tools, and procedures Section 504 Coordinators use to create and provide uniformity of Section 504 requirements across their districts. Specifically, I examined how coordinators ensured their schools (a) identified and located students, (b) made provisions for providing a free and appropriate public …

Lnference On Differences In K Means For Data With Excess Zeros And Detection Limits, Haolai Jiang Dec 2014

Lnference On Differences In K Means For Data With Excess Zeros And Detection Limits, Haolai Jiang

Dissertations

Many data have excess zeros or unobservable values falling below detection limit. For example, data on hospitalization costs incurred by members of a health insurance plan will have zeros for the percentage who did not get sick. Benzene exposure measurements on petroleum re nery workers have some exposures fall below the limit of detection. Traditional methods of inference like one-way ANOVA are not appropriate to analyze such data since the point mass at zero violates typical distribution assumptions.

For testing for equality of means of k distributions, we will propose a likelihood ratio test that accounts for excess zeros or …

The Effects Of Systemic Racism On The Academic Achievement Of African American Male Adolescents, Andre Rubin Fields Dec 2014

The Effects Of Systemic Racism On The Academic Achievement Of African American Male Adolescents, Andre Rubin Fields

Dissertations

In the most recent decade, there has been a spiraling national trend of academic underachievement on the part of African American male adolescents. The empirical purpose of this study was to investigate what role, if any, systemic racism may be playing in the growing epidemic of academic underachievement in African American male adolescents. The results of the analyses utilized in this study found that there were significant correlations between perceptions of racism, coping behavior utilization, and psychological dysfunction. Specifically, canonical correlation analysis found that elevated levels of Cultural Mistrust, Cultural Race-Related Stress, and Individual Race-Related Stress leads to increased use …

The Relationship Between Racial Ambiguity And Self-Concept In Multiracial Lndividuals, James R. Jobe Dec 2014

The Relationship Between Racial Ambiguity And Self-Concept In Multiracial Lndividuals, James R. Jobe

Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between racial ambiguity and self-concept in multiracial individuals. Research as to the experiences of multiracial people is limited both in frequency and in scope. As multiracial individuals continue to grow in number, understanding their unique experiences will become more important to social scientists (e.g., psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists) across disciplines. The current study examined two hypotheses and explored a series of additional relationships. The theoretical framework that was utilized for this study was Symbolic Interaction Theory. This theory provided an effective way to understand how people use and make meaning of their surrounding social contexts …

Tatweer School Principals' Perceptions Of New Authorities Grantedin The Lnitial Steps Of Decentralization, Salah Salih Meemar

Dissertations

In 2011, the Saudi Ministry of Education (MOE) conferred 21 new authorities in addition to the previous 31 to their school principals. A main goal in conferring these authorities was to facilitate decentralization of Saudi school districts. To further facilitate decentralization, 900 schools were selected as Tatweer schools. Tatweer, also known as the King Abdullah Public Education Development Project, is a pilot program designed to match Saudi standards of education to that of other nations. To date, few studies have explored principals’ perceptions of the new authorities. A review of literature revealed just three studies on the topic (see Allheani, …

Stimulant abuse is a widespread problem that often leads to detrimental health and social consequences. Currently, there are no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies available as a treatment option for stimulant abuse or the prevention of relapse. Drugs targeting kappa opioid receptors (KOR) are under investigation as a potential pharmacotherapy. KOR agonists have been shown to modulate dopamine levels within brain reward pathways, thereby producing anti-addictive effects. Traditional KOR agonists unfortunately tend to produce untoward side effects, including sedation, limiting their therapeutic utility. Structurally different from traditional KOR agonists, salvinorin A (salvA) may produce less sedating effects while still exerting anti-addictive properties. SalvA …
