Study Abroad And Moral Development, Andrew B. Johnson, Danielle R. Hathcock Dec 2014

Study Abroad And Moral Development, Andrew B. Johnson, Danielle R. Hathcock

eJournal of Public Affairs

Why should students study abroad? The standard answer universities give cites three types of benefit: academic, cultural, and professional. We argue that this answer sells the value of study abroad short. Just as important as any of these benefits is the value study abroad has in promoting moral development. Drawing on key ideas of the seminal developmental psychologists Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg, we make the case that study abroad can facilitate moral development, whether one understands morality in utilitarian, Kantian, or sentimentalist terms. It does so by helping students take the perspective of those who are culturally different, inducing …

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith Dec 2014

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith

Linguistics Faculty Works

The typical medical education curriculum does not address language development for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. However, this issue is medical because of the frequency with which DHH children as a population face health complications due to linguistic deprivation. The critical period for language development is early; if a child does not acquire an intact language before age five, the child is unlikely to ever have native-like use of any language. Such linguistic deprivation carries risks of cognitive delay and psycho-social health difficulties. Spoken language is inaccessible for many DHH children despite assistive-technology developments. But sign languages, because they are …

Developing Critical Loads And Dynamic Critical Loads For Acidification For Watersheds In The Adirondack Region Of New York And Great Smoky Mountain National Park (Grsm), Qingtao Zhou Dec 2014

Developing Critical Loads And Dynamic Critical Loads For Acidification For Watersheds In The Adirondack Region Of New York And Great Smoky Mountain National Park (Grsm), Qingtao Zhou

Dissertations - ALL

Critical loads (CLs) and dynamic critical loads (DCLs) are important tools for the management of ecosystems that are impacted by high sulfate, nitrate and ammonium deposition. In this study, a biogeochemical model (PnET-BGC) was applied to 20 watersheds in the Adirondack region and 12 watersheds in Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GRSM) to calculate CLs and DCLs. I evaluated ecosystem changes in response to historical and potential future changes in acidic deposition. I analyzed factors affecting CLs and DCLs for acidification in the acid impacted Constable Pond Watershed in the Adirondack region, specifically evaluating trade-offs of sulfate and nitrate deposition, …

Implementation Of The Essential Elements Of Standards-Focused Middle-Level Schools And Programs And Their Relationship To Student Achievement, Jeffrey Craig Dec 2014

Implementation Of The Essential Elements Of Standards-Focused Middle-Level Schools And Programs And Their Relationship To Student Achievement, Jeffrey Craig

Dissertations - ALL

In New York State, there are regulations that describe many of the practices that middle-level schools are supposed to implement. Yet, little is known about the effectiveness of these middle-level practices in schools in the state. Without definitive information about the impact of middle-level practices on student achievement, it's difficult for practitioners and leaders to know if the school improvement decisions they make are the right ones and whether they will have the desired impact on student achievement.

This study compares the implementation of the middle-level guidelines for New York State, known as The Essential Elements of Standards-Focused Middle-Level Schools …

Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette Dec 2014

Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The excessive delivery of nitrogen from land into coastal waters can lead to a host of environmental problems including algal blooms, hypoxic zones, habitat loss, and acidification. While many of these environmental problems have manifested themselves within Long Island's coastal bays, the quantity and sources of nitrogen are largely unknown in much of this region, making the development of effective management plans to ameliorate these problems exceedingly difficult. This study was designed to quantify nitrogen loads and sources to Moriches, Quantuck and Shinnecock Bays within the eastern extent of Long Island's South Shore Estuary Reserve. Further this study assessed water …

Roles Of Zinc And Iron On Bone Health In A Rat Model Of Osteoporosis, Danhua Yan Dec 2014

Roles Of Zinc And Iron On Bone Health In A Rat Model Of Osteoporosis, Danhua Yan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Bone is one of the most vital organs in animals, serving as both structural and protective functions. Remodeling of bone is an important indicator of bone health, and disorders in bone remodeling may lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis increases risk of bone fracture and even death, and much more preferable to be happened in postmenopausal women due to great changes in hormones. Micronutrients, such as Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe), would as well influence bone health in different manners. That Zn would promote bone health is widely accepted, for the reasons Zn increases osteoblast cell proliferation and …

Redox Regulation Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Oncogene-Induced Senescence, Ming Yang Dec 2014

Redox Regulation Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Oncogene-Induced Senescence, Ming Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Oncogene expression in normal cells can cause an irreversible growth arrest called oncogene-induced senescence (OIS), which serves as a barrier to cancer initiation. Elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been detected in most senescent cells and are thought to play a causal role in OIS. ROS are believed to have a second messenger function in transducing signals, however their molecular role in senescence remains elusive. We hypothesize that PTPs, which are prone to redox regulation, act as specific target of ROS and the redox regulation of PTPs mediates the signaling transduction in oncogene-induced senescence. In our study, we utilized a …

Enhanced Backbone Dihedral Parameters For Protein Simulations, Carmenza Martinez Dec 2014

Enhanced Backbone Dihedral Parameters For Protein Simulations, Carmenza Martinez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of biomolecules have become a supportive tool to experimental methods for structure refinement, protein folding, drug discovery and many more applications. This is due to the increase in computational power and necessity of finding a method capable of describing the forces at work in chemical systems without the need to do extensive quantum calculations. All of these are possible because of the classical definition of the potential force field function. The force field function is essential to perform MD simulations, since this equation carries the physical description of the molecules being studied. …

The Impact Of Children With And Without Developmental Disabilities On Relationship Satisfaction And The Parenting Alliance, Caitlin E. Walsh Dec 2014

The Impact Of Children With And Without Developmental Disabilities On Relationship Satisfaction And The Parenting Alliance, Caitlin E. Walsh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Studies have shown that parents of children with ASD report greater negative impact of the child on family adaptation including financial stability, sibling relationships, and parents' social lives than parents of children with other chronic problems (e.g. | Down syndrome, ADHD, ODD). Parents of children with ASD also report increased marital discord and parent stress. Currently there are no studies examining differences in parent perceptions of child impact and how this factor may influence parental relationships, particularly parents' spousal relationships and agreement on co-parenting. In this study, 157 mothers of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome (DS), …

Violence Against Chicanas From 1950 To 2000, Tzu-Ling Yen Dec 2014

Violence Against Chicanas From 1950 To 2000, Tzu-Ling Yen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the mid-twentieth to late-twentieth century, a number of Mexican laborers came to the United States to search for more working opportunities. After settling in the U.S. | they had to adjust to the harsh environment, poor working conditions, and multiple discrimination in Anglo-American society. Also, many Chicanas suffered from religious and patriarchal violence inside their community. This thesis examines different types of violence against Chicana/o migrants in the U.S. from 1950 to 2000, including economic violence, religious violence, racial discrimination, and sexual violence. In both Chicana/o community and white society, Chicanas/os have to deal with different kinds of violence …

Job Displacement, Retirement And The Roles Of Government Programs Among Older American Workers, Jieruo Liu Dec 2014

Job Displacement, Retirement And The Roles Of Government Programs Among Older American Workers, Jieruo Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The world has been going through one of worst economic recessions in history with severe job market downturns. In October 2009, the U.S. civilian unemployment rate reached a historical 10% and nearly 50% of the unemployed exhausted their 26-week regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits and consequently, UI has been extended to 99 weeks. This dissertation examines the empirical facts of job displacement among the older American workers during the recent economic crisis, and studies their subsequent labor market and retirement decisions, with focus on the roles of government programs including UI and Social Security Old-Age Benefits (OA). Job displacement is …

A Reconsideration Of Labor Supply Of Immigrants And Social Welfare Programs, Yi Zhang Dec 2014

A Reconsideration Of Labor Supply Of Immigrants And Social Welfare Programs, Yi Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation contributes to the discussion of the labor market performance of immigrants and their economic assimilation in terms of welfare program participation. The composition of immigrant labor force in U.S. has been fluctuating dramatically. In 1980, for example, the immigrant share of persons aged 50--74 was 8.9% but in 2000, more than 14.5% of this older population group were from foreign countries. Then in 2010, this proportion dropped to around 13.2%. Part of this variation is due to the aging of previous immigrants residing in U.S. but many recent inflows also include a surprisingly high proportion of people in …

Design Of Low-Power, Low-Noise Readout Circuits For Sensory Microsystems, Yingkan Lin Dec 2014

Design Of Low-Power, Low-Noise Readout Circuits For Sensory Microsystems, Yingkan Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A wide range of new applications, especially in the areas of health and environmental monitoring, have become possible due to advances in the sensor technologies over the last decade. To translate those advances in the sensor technologies into sensory microsystems amenable to these applications, novel techniques and design methodologies have to be developed at the sensory interface to address more stringent system constraints and the imperfections in these sensor technologies. We propose and demonstrate the design methodologies and implementations of the sensory microsystems for two novel sensor technologies, selective metaloxide gas sensor and semiconductor scintillator. The gas sensing system with …

Disability And The Young Adult Reader: How Has The Portrayal Of Disability Changed In The Last Fifty Years?, Sharon Munroe Hinkson Dec 2014

Disability And The Young Adult Reader: How Has The Portrayal Of Disability Changed In The Last Fifty Years?, Sharon Munroe Hinkson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Literature offers an opportunity to share in the lived experiences of others, experiences that as readers we may otherwise never personally encounter. Disability in our society is a reality, yet one that has not been fully embraced--not unlike issues with race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Individuals begin to encounter many of these matters early in life, but as impressionable adolescents, a time when they begin to understand and navigate the world, often times they meet these experiences in books. Since books are an especially important part of how thoughts and attitudes are shaped, this paper seeks to analyze a …

American Masculinity And Home In Antebellum Literature, Derek Scott Mcgrath Dec 2014

American Masculinity And Home In Antebellum Literature, Derek Scott Mcgrath

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The conventional argument in literary and gender studies of nineteenth-century United States culture has been that the home was women's claimed sphere of influence, whereas men were excluded from the home because of their economic, cultural, and societal commitments to the public sphere. Even as Catharine Beecher, Lydia Maria Child, Sarah Josepha Hale, and other adherents to a conservative domestic ideology closely associated the private sphere with women, these same writers identified specific roles and spaces that they expected men to occupy in the home. Hardly only a woman's domain, the home was a powerful force in motivating constructions of …

Is There Room For The Modern Narrator? A Study Of Narrative Intrusion In Henry James' The Golden Bowl, Rachael Pompeii Dec 2014

Is There Room For The Modern Narrator? A Study Of Narrative Intrusion In Henry James' The Golden Bowl, Rachael Pompeii

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

At the turn of the twentieth century, narrative presentation saw one of the most intense transitionary movements in literary history. The instructive, omniscient authorial narrator of Victorian literature slowly faced demise as an increasing turn towards subjective, stream-of-consciousness narration dominated the literary age of twentieth century modern realism. The critical and fictional work of Henry James, literary genius who wrote across the century line, persists in the presentation of a distinctive narrating body at the same time that it encourages and anticipates the incipient effacement of such a figure. In his final completed novel, The Golden Bowl, James' narrative choices …

" Bienvenido Al Vecindario" : Inserting Spanglish Nonwords Into English Versus Spanish Phonological Neighborhoods., April Pufahl Dec 2014

" Bienvenido Al Vecindario" : Inserting Spanglish Nonwords Into English Versus Spanish Phonological Neighborhoods., April Pufahl

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

If speech perception and production share lexical representations, then properties of these representations should have similar effects in both modalities. Likewise, if the system supporting lexical processing is fundamentally the same regardless of the language implemented, then a given property should produce the same effect across all languages. However, previous research suggests cross-modal and cross-linguistic differences for one property: phonological neighborhood density, a measure of the number of similar-sounding words in a language. These studies have relied on existing words, affording little control over the numerous, and possibly confounding, properties associated with each word. To avoid these potential pitfalls, I …

The Effects Of Cpg And Upa Dinucleotides On The Attenuation Of Poliovirus By Codon Pair Deoptimization, Malka Arabov Dec 2014

The Effects Of Cpg And Upa Dinucleotides On The Attenuation Of Poliovirus By Codon Pair Deoptimization, Malka Arabov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Codon pair bias, the preferential pairing of certain codons over others, has been observed in all species analyzed ranging from bacteria to mammals. Previous research has shown that artificial coupling of underrepresented codon pairs (codon pair deoptimization) in viral genomes (such as poliovirus and influenza virus) reduces gene function and leads to virus death or attenuation. Although the reason for this phenomenon is unclear, increasing underrepresented codon pairs in an RNA viral coding region consequently increases the frequency of CpG and UpA dinucleotides. These dinucleotides are suppressed in a variety of species and may be responsible for attenuation by codon …

Structural Change In Impact Altered Phyllosilicates As Detected By Laboratory Spectroscopy And Applied To The Remote Sensing Of The Surface Of Mars, Lonia Rachael Friedlander Dec 2014

Structural Change In Impact Altered Phyllosilicates As Detected By Laboratory Spectroscopy And Applied To The Remote Sensing Of The Surface Of Mars, Lonia Rachael Friedlander

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Atomic-scale mineral properties directly control detectable macroscopic properties. These include reactivity and stability as well as characteristic vibrational and electronic spectroscopic features. The connection between structure and spectroscopic properties in minerals is of fundamental importance to the interpretation of remote sensing data, especially in planetary science where ground-truth is very difficult. On planets without plate tectonics such as Mars, meteoritic impacts are a fundamental geologic process known to affect the structure of planetary surfaces, as well as their mineralogy. This work uses a wide range of laboratory spectroscopic techniques to detect and investigate structural change in impact-altered phyllosilicates. The analysis …

The Blues Continuum: New York Calls - Naples Responds, Alessandro Buffa Dec 2014

The Blues Continuum: New York Calls - Naples Responds, Alessandro Buffa

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation traces a form of call and response between New York City and Naples in the 1970s and 1980s. It foregrounds the importance of the `blues' in the traffic of sound, images and oppositional ideas between these two cities located on the same geographical parallel. The blues here is understood as a musical style and feeling, as well as an affect of trauma, loss, memory and an intimate relationship that artists and activists established with their city spaces in the age of the so called " urban crisis." It proposes a " blutopia," based on utopian/dystopian tensions that promote …

Effects Of Ocean Acidification Combined With Hypoxia, Elevated Temperature, Or Restricted Food Supply On Early Life Stages Of The Forage Fish Menidia Beryllina, Menidia Menidia, And Cyprinodon Variegatus, Elizabeth Depasquale Dec 2014

Effects Of Ocean Acidification Combined With Hypoxia, Elevated Temperature, Or Restricted Food Supply On Early Life Stages Of The Forage Fish Menidia Beryllina, Menidia Menidia, And Cyprinodon Variegatus, Elizabeth Depasquale

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Estuarine organisms are experiencing many stressors related to climate change at an accelerated pace when compared to the open ocean. The co-occurrence of acidification and hypoxia has been observed during warmer months when many fish species spawn in temperate estuaries. Concurrently, estuarine systems can experience extreme temperatures during summer and dynamic levels of plankton. This study assessed the tolerance of early life stage estuarine fish to the co-occurrence of acidification with hypoxia, elevated temperatures, and varying levels of planktonic prey. Time to hatch, hatching rates, survival, and growth were quantified for larval Menidia beryllina, Menidia menidia, and Cyprinodon variegatus exposed …

High-Throughput Single-Cell Copy Number Profiling For Cancer Heterogeneity Analysis, Taimour Baslan Dec 2014

High-Throughput Single-Cell Copy Number Profiling For Cancer Heterogeneity Analysis, Taimour Baslan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity has long been recognized, yet remains poorly understood. This has primarily been due to the lack of sensitive technologies to measure it. Genome wide analysis at the level of single cells has recently emerged as a powerful tool to dissect cancer genome heterogeneity. However, to be truly transformative, single cell approaches must accommodate the analysis of large numbers of single cells. Here, using integrative informatics and molecular biology approaches this study presents a robust, low-cost, and high-throughput method to retrieve the genome-wide copy number landscape of hundreds of single cancer cells. Application of the method to human …
