Food And Identity Formation Among Jain Laywomen, Kristin Mcconnell Dec 2014

Food And Identity Formation Among Jain Laywomen, Kristin Mcconnell

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Jains are a small but influential minority community in India. Their religion is structured around the concept of ahimsa, the strict adherence to nonviolence in one’s every under taking. The ideal Jain diet does the least amount of harm to both oneself and one’s environment, including plants and microscopic organisms. Many foods — including meat, honey, alcohol, and underground vegetables — are forbidden. While Jain philosophy is adamant about avoiding foods that are obtained through violence, it says little about the perspectives and lifestyles of those most often charged with maintaining this diet: Jain laywomen. Because these women are …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Violence against women is a social problem that demands much attention from society because it is a human rights issue and is damaging to the mental health status of women. The purpose of this investigation is to use an ethnographic approach to analyze the perceptions of women who have suffered from domestic violence to determine how perceptions of domestic violence impact subsequent mental health outcomes. Women (n=6) were recruited from the NGO Amhauta, an educational program that advocates for the rights of women and children in San Jerónimo, a district of Cusco, Peru. This analysis uses an ethnographic approach to …

The Case Of Reintegration Of Women Post Incarceration, Deana Raley Noble Phd

Dissertations

Women released from prison or jail face particular obstacles and challenges on reentry to the community, many of which are related to their childhood and to gender roles as women and mothers. This study relates the lived experience of one woman's successful transition to economic and mainstream societal reintegration and family reconnection after release from prison and the insights gained by the researcher. Case study methodology congruent with Miller's Relational-Cultural Theory philosophical framework was utilized in this in-depth, single case design and represents a unique case. The overall purpose of this descriptive and explanatory research was to explore precursors to …

Formation, Maintenance, And Dissolution Of Employment Relationships, Jonathan Biggane Dec 2014

Formation, Maintenance, And Dissolution Of Employment Relationships, Jonathan Biggane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Much like scholarship on employment relationships, the goal of contemporary research on romantic relationships is to understand the forces that attract partners to one another and the underlying mechanisms that form long-term stable and satisfying unions. The three manuscripts herein integrate these seemingly disparate bodies of literature to address gaps in the turnover literature. First, I proffer positive illusions as a proximal antecedent of voluntary turnover and an answer as to why employees remain in bad employment relationships despite facing shocks, accumulated dissatisfaction, and quality alternatives. Second, I examine the content of exit conversations, identifying how employees approach exit (i.e., …

Evaluating Weight Status Of Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Pilot Study, Perrin Leanne Tamblyn Dec 2014

Evaluating Weight Status Of Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Pilot Study, Perrin Leanne Tamblyn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Overall 5-year survival rates for children with cancer have improved and are above 80%.39 Studies indicate that childhood cancer survivors have an increased risk for being overweight or obese due to treatment-related complications.14 Therefore, the correct assessment of weight status in pediatric oncology patients is important in identifying those patients at risk for being overweight or obesity. Neck circumference, ideal body weight percentage, and body mass index were compared to the Tanita© bioelectrical impedance analyzer measure of body fat in 27 pediatric oncology patients with leukemia and lymphoma. BMI was found to be in better agreement with the BIA than …

Effects Of Macroscopic Heterogeneity On Cardiac Propagation And Termination Of Reentry, Deepika Konakanchi Dec 2014

Effects Of Macroscopic Heterogeneity On Cardiac Propagation And Termination Of Reentry, Deepika Konakanchi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is believed to be a result of uncontrolled and sustained spiral wave reentries. Few recent studies have discussed the effects of the heterogeneous nature of atrial tissue at cellular and microscopic levels, on the electrical activity of the heart and defibrillation of AF; however, the effect of macroscopic patches of heterogeneity in the size ranges 3-8 mm has not been studied. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of macroscopic patches of heterogeneity on cardiac propagation and termination of reentry in a computationally inexpensive, 2D bidomain model of a sheet of cardiac tissue. Tissue …

Automated Detection Of Cigarette Smoking Puffs From Mobile Sensors - A Multimodal Approach, Amin Ahsan Ali Dec 2014

Automated Detection Of Cigarette Smoking Puffs From Mobile Sensors - A Multimodal Approach, Amin Ahsan Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Smoking has been conclusively proved to be the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Extensive research is conducted on developing effective smoking cessation programs. Most smoking cessation programs achieve low success rate because they are unable to intervene at the right moment. Identification of high-risk situations that may lead an abstinent smoker to relapse involves discovering the associations among various contexts that precede a smoking session or a smoking lapse. In the absence of an automated method, detection of smoking events still relies on subject self-report that is prone to failure to report and involves subject burden. …

Can Wearable Sensors Help Assess The Reliability Of Self-Reports In Mobile Health Studies?, Hillol Sarker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Self-report in the form of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) has been the primary instrument to collect measurements from participants in their natural environment. Given numerous sources of biases and inaccuracies in self-report, assessing and improving the reliability of self-report has been the subject of continuing research. However, to date, there exist only limited lab based methods to check the veracity of collected self-report data. Increasing adoption of sensors in field studies that sometimes can passively measure the same phenomena that have been traditionally included in EMA self-report has opened up a new opportunity to assess the reliability of self-reports.In this …

A Screen Printed Electrode For The Characterization Of Cardiac Tissues, Alayne Stewart White Dec 2014

A Screen Printed Electrode For The Characterization Of Cardiac Tissues, Alayne Stewart White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A screen-printed electrode (SPE), intended to be used as part of a cardiac mapping system, was fabricated and evaluated to determine if SPEs are a suitable alternative to current electrodes. The SPEs were designed in AutoCAD and screen-printed using silver conductor ink and an insulating paste. Measurements were taken during electrode development to determine how well the design translated to the final printed product. The efficacy of the insulating material used, and the affects of print speed on print quality were also evaluated. Finally, the performance of the SPEs was studied through a stimulating and recording model, as well as …

A Practical Study Of Samuel Barber's Sonata For Cello And Piano, Op. 6, Paul Joseph Vest Dec 2014

A Practical Study Of Samuel Barber's Sonata For Cello And Piano, Op. 6, Paul Joseph Vest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines Samuel Barber's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 6, a notable part of the repertoire for cello and piano, and American music in general. Beginning with an overview of Barber's life, further chapters include a formal analysis of the piece, a guide for the cellist's approach in performance, and a discussion of the piece in the context of nationality in the 1930's. Barber's sonata is revealed to be a neo-romantic work, combining aspects of 19th-century romanticism and 20th-century modernism. The role of the cello is found to be lyrical and often vocal, a typical quality in Barber's …

A Comparison Of Biomechanics And Metabolic Cost Among Elliptical Exercise And Running In Runners: Training And Clinical Implications, Stephanie Nicole Chester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to compare hip and knee biomechanical and metabolic differences among elliptical exercises and running in healthy runners. Sixteen participants were tested on three different exercise conditions (treadmill running; TR, standard elliptical; SE, lateral elliptical; LE). Hip and knee kinematic (i.e. angular motion) variables were measured using a motion capture system, and a metabolic system was used to measure metabolic cost (i.e. VO2, caloric cost, RER). Sagittal knee ROM was greater in LE and SE compared to TR. Hip abduction and external rotation ROM were greater in LE compared to SE and TR. Similar metabolic …

Executive Cognitive Functioning And Regulatory Deficits Among Emerging Adult Nonmedical Prescription Opioid Users, Alison Marisa Pickover Dec 2014

Executive Cognitive Functioning And Regulatory Deficits Among Emerging Adult Nonmedical Prescription Opioid Users, Alison Marisa Pickover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nonmedical prescription opioid (NMPO) use is elevated among emerging adults and may be related to deficits in executive cognitive functioning (ECF). This study examined relations between NMPO use, ECF deficits, and "downstream consequences" of poor self- and emotion regulation among emerging adults. Twenty-seven emerging adult NMPO users and 27 matched controls completed measures of ECF (working memory and interference control), self- and emotion regulation, and a clinical interview assessing substance use. NMPO users reported regulation deficits relative to controls, but groups did not differ on ECF measures. Among users, interference control was associated with NMPO use, working memory with alcohol …

Temperature-Responsive Injectable Hydrogels: Design, Characterization And Application As Localized Delivery Systems For Drug And Gene Therapy, Daniel Ghirmay Abebe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In recent decades, block copolymers have found wide spread interest as drug delivery systems (DDS). Improvements in synthetic techniques, polymer engineering and nanotechnology have made it possible to design and construct a variety of DDS for emerging therapeutics, such as gene therapy. Block copolymer gene carriers have several advantages including improved biocompatibility, higher loading capacity and ease of large-scale production. However, the successful clinical application of these delivery systems has been plagued due to several shortcomings, such as poor stability in biological environment, low loading efficiency of therapeutic agents and relatively high cytotoxicity. The majority investigated block copolymer gene carriers …

The Trouble With Tourism, Steven J. Hollenhorst, Susan Houge Mackenzie, David M. Ostergren Dec 2014

The Trouble With Tourism, Steven J. Hollenhorst, Susan Houge Mackenzie, David M. Ostergren

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

The hegemonic view of tourism is as a global panacea for struggling peoples, environments and economies (Smith and Brent 2001). This article begins by arguing that increasing worldwide risks from human-induced climate change fundamentally alter the veracity of this prediction claim. As one of the world’s largest industries, tourism is also one of the largest emitters of carbon, primarily from air transport. Far from standing apart from our carbon-dependent economy, tourism is quite profoundly a creation of that economy and cannot be an antidote to the very stuff of which it is made. Further, to the extent that tourism functions …

The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert Dec 2014

The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert

Food Science and Nutrition

Mental health disorders are a universal issue and affect millions of individuals every day. Anxiety is the most common type of mental disorder, affecting social, physical, and cognitive health. Although clinicians usually suggest prescriptive medications, they carry side effects, are expensive, and only acutely alleviate symptoms. As a result, recent interest has been directed towards nonconventional dietary therapies, including tea and its constituent L-theanine, for anxiolytic effects. Tea is the most prevalent beverage consumed after water; it is historically and globally accepted. The purpose of this literature review is to explore whether tea and its constituent L-theanine carry anxiolytic effects. …

Re:Find Distillery, Ronald Cain, Kasey Urman, Taylor Frias

Case Studies in Agribusiness

When Alex and Monica Villicana started their winery in 2002, they had no intention of starting a distillery. But in order to have the right ratio of skins to juice they had to bleed off and dispose juice. Trying to find a use for the excess juice, they distilled it into vodka and gin. Much to their surprise, they quickly sold out. The case discusses licensing and technical issues of starting a distrillery.

Supply Chain Management And Investment Risk, Claude Chereau

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

We use a behaviorally motivated risk-return optimization framework to shed light on the important link between global supply chain management and investors’ risk-return choice. By improving the transparency and sustainability of the global supply chain, firms can reduce the probability of extreme losses, thus increasing investors’ expected utility and asset valuations. In order to effectively address the growing risks firms face in their global supply chains, systemic change is required. Managers can facilitate this change by increasing transparency and sustainability of their supply chains, especially in the area of carbon emissions reduction. We outline existing programs and tools that are leading …
