Longitudinal Quantitative Analysis Of Gait And Balance In Friedreich's Ataxia, Jeannie B. Stephenson
Longitudinal Quantitative Analysis Of Gait And Balance In Friedreich's Ataxia, Jeannie B. Stephenson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Friedreich's Ataxia (FA) is an autosomal-recessive, neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive lower extremity muscle weakness and sensory loss, balance deficits, limb and gait ataxia, and dysarthria. FA is considered a sensory ataxia because the dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord dorsal columns are involved early in the disease, whereas the cerebellum is affected later. Balance deficits and gait ataxia are often evaluated clinically and in research using clinical rating scales. Recently, quantitative tools such as the Biodex Balance System SD and the GAITRite Walkway System have become available to objectively assess balance and gait, respectively. However, there are limited studies …

In the United States, the female prison population growth has far outpaced the male growth in the past quarter century. In 2010, over 200,000 females were behind bars, most of them being mothers and uneducated (Owen, 2010). Consequently, more than half of the states have been sued to provide women with services equal to those provided to male inmates such as vocational and postsecondary programs (Morash, Bynum, & Koons, 1998). In Ohio, research indicated that postsecondary education had a more positive effect on female offenders than their male counterparts (Shuler, 2002). Today, there is a new trend of college-educated female …
The Adequacy Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acids In Patients With Phenylketonuria Or Hyperphenylalaninemia: A Retrospective Study, Jessie Ho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Objective To investigate if patients diagnosed with phenylketonuria (PKU) or hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) at the mid-south clinic had adequate essential fatty acid intakes.Design This study compared patients' intakes of linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic fatty acids (ALA) with Adequate Intake (AI) within an appropriate age and gender group. Data were gathered from existing food record analyses from MetabolicPro between June 2010 and December 2013. Means and standard deviations for percentage of essential fatty acid intakes were determined. A paired t-test was used to test the hypothesis that the mean intake of LA and ALA were equal. T-tests were performed to examine whether …
The Effects Of Traumatic Stress On Birth Outcomes Of African American And White Women, Larita Rochelle Webb
The Effects Of Traumatic Stress On Birth Outcomes Of African American And White Women, Larita Rochelle Webb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Preterm birth (PTB), an infant born with less than 37 weeks gestation, and small for gestional age (SGA), a constitutionally small or growth restricted infant, are the leading causes of infant mortality. There is a growing disparity in PTB and SGA by race, with African American women having the highest rates of all racial groups. Accounting for socioeconomic, behavioral and obstetric risk factors has not fully explained the racial disparity in birth outcomes. The goal of this dissertation was to determine if lifetime exposure to traumatic stress, measured by the Traumatic Life Events Questionaire (TLEQ), contributes to the disparity in PTB …

Responsibility To Protect (R2p), The Responsibility Of The International Community To Protect Syrian Citizens, Ghuna Bdiwi
Responsibility To Protect (R2p), The Responsibility Of The International Community To Protect Syrian Citizens, Ghuna Bdiwi
LLM Theses
The responsibility to protect (R2P) doctrine allows the international community to intervene for humanitarian purposes in events of massive violations of human rights. However, the legality of humanitarian intervention has received considerable critical attention because of its direct conflict with two fundamental norms in international law: the prohibition of the use of force, and the principle of state sovereignty. In Syria, mass atrocity crimes are escalating on a daily basis. Until now, international efforts have failed to find a peaceful formula to stop the crisis. International law allows the Security Council to authorize humanitarian intervention under the power of Chapter …
Describing Regional Interdependence For A Patient With Lateral Epicondylalgia Managed With Postural Training And Iontophoresis: A Case Report, Matthew Starkey
Describing Regional Interdependence For A Patient With Lateral Epicondylalgia Managed With Postural Training And Iontophoresis: A Case Report, Matthew Starkey
Case Report Posters
Background: Lateral epicondylalgia describes a condition where pain and tenderness are present in the wrist extensors, most commonly from repetitive motion activities. Current research suggests the cause is attributed to tissue degeneration due to repetitive stress to the wrist extensors. A concept known as regional interdependence may also influence lateral epicondylalgia. Regional interdependence describes a condition where impairments are present in proximal or distal joint segments and contribute or cause pain to the primary region reported by the patient. Iontophoresis, a common intervention utilized for treating lateral epicondylalgia, is intervention that uses electrical current to drive ionic drugs into the …

Closed-Chain Quadriceps Strengthening And Hamstring Stretching In The Conservative Treatment Of Medial Plica Syndrome: A Case Report, Michael Gamache
Case Report Posters
Background: Medial Plica Syndrome (MPS) is a source of anteriormedial knee pain. Caused by irritation of the medial plica (MP) by overuse, repetitive use or direct impact. Plica are folds on the synovial membrane formed as the synovial joint develops. Conservative treatment aimed at decreasing compressive forces at the knee are recommend have. Interventions should include open-chain activities that cause minimal joint stress on the anterior aspect of the knee and hamstring stretching. Tight hamstrings place stress on the anterior aspect of the knee during extension. Purpose: To demonstrate the use of close-chain quadriceps strengthening and hamstring stretching in a …

Physical Therapy Management Of A Female Adolescent Softball Pitcher With Chronic Low Back And Hip Pain: A Case Report, Paige Friend
Case Report Posters
Background: Low back pain (LBP) in young athletes who participate in sports requiring repetitive flexion/extension/rotation of the spine is common among females, especially during periods of rapid growth. Information collected by Oliver and Plummer on ground reaction forces, kinematics, and muscle activation during the windmill softball pitch indicates how crucial strength and conditioning of the gluteal muscle group is to prevent injury during this movement pattern. Purpose: This case report describes the examination, evaluation, and PT interventions for a female high school softball pitcher with hip and core weakness, and bilateral hip hypermobility leading to low back and hip pain.

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett
The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett
Anthropology Publications
As educators, we owe it to our students to enable them to transgress structural impediments and to create sustainable alternatives from the margins of the industrial agro-food system. Policies of assimilation, allotment, and enclosure of the Native American commons and ecosystems brought devastation to Native cultures. Dependence on government commodities replaced Native food sovereignty and contributed to malnutrition, obesity, and diabetes as diets responded to corporately produced and processed foods. Young people often feel disempowered and ask how they might confront such formidable forces as corporate control of our agro-food system, destruction of natural resources, and threats to human health. …

The Relationship Between Pain Sensitivity And Motor Adaptations, Irina Fedulow, Katherine S. Rudolph
Research Report Papers
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between measures of central sensitization and CPM and how they impact motor adaptations in individuals without chronic pain conditions. To conduct this research, we decided to incorporate the “broken escalator phenomenon,” which is the unusual feeling that occurs when an individual steps onto an escalator or moving walkway that is broken and therefore not moving. The body responds with an anticipatory response that includes increased trunk sway and increased forward speed. The body adapts to the stationary walkway by reducing trunk sway and speed. Following that period of adaptation, if …
The Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient With Adverse Mechanical Tension Including The Use Of Neural Gliders And Tensioners: A Case Report, Brent Manley
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Adverse mechanical tension on one’s nervous system can impair a nerves ability to mobilize in relation to its interfacing tissues and lead to sensations of pain, paresthesia and numbness. The impairment is typically treated by managing the interfacing tissues in addition to mobilizing the nerve through the use of gliders and tensioners. The purposes of this case report were to (1) provide overview of adverse mechanical tension and (2) to report a case describing specific physical therapy management approaches and outcomes during outpatient rehabilitation for a patient with adverse mechanical tension. Case Description: The patient was a …

Over-Expression Of Copper/Zinc Superoxide Dismutase In The Median Preoptic Nucleus Attenuates Chronic Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension In The Rat., John P. Collister, Mitch Bellrichard, Donna Drebes, David Nahey, Jun Tian, Matthew C. Zimmerman
Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology
The brain senses circulating levels of angiotensin II (AngII) via circumventricular organs, such as the subfornical organ (SFO), and is thought to adjust sympathetic nervous system output accordingly via this neuro-hormonal communication. However, the cellular signaling mechanisms involved in these communications remain to be fully understood. Previous lesion studies of either the SFO, or the downstream median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) have shown a diminution of the hypertensive effects of chronic AngII, without providing a clear explanation as to the intracellular signaling pathway(s) involved. Additional studies have reported that over-expressing copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), an intracellular superoxide (O2·-) scavenging enzyme, in …

The Effects Of Dietary Macronutrient Composition On Whole Body Insulin Sensitivity Through Modification Of Cellular Lipid Composition, Daniel J. Freidenreich
The Effects Of Dietary Macronutrient Composition On Whole Body Insulin Sensitivity Through Modification Of Cellular Lipid Composition, Daniel J. Freidenreich
Doctoral Dissertations
Individuals with metabolic syndrome (n = 15) were fed two hypocaloric diets, ~500 kcal below energy requirements, of individually prepared foods for 21 days. The diets consisted of a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) (% carbohydrate:fat:protein = 7:74:20) and a low-fat diet (LFD) (55:28:20) reflective of the current US dietary recommendations. The LCD diet resulted in a net weekly intake of 2.69 g of arachidonic acid (ARA) in comparison to the 1.27 g/wk consumed during the LFD. The LCD significantly increased plasma ARA and decreased dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) in all three circulating lipid fractions as well as buccal cells in comparison to …

Physical Therapy Management Of A Female Adolescent Softball Pitcher With Chronic Low Back And Hip Pain: A Case Report, Paige Friend
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Low back pain (LBP) is an epidemiological problem, particularly in Westernized countries, and is common among adolescents who participate in competitive sports. There are few comprehensive clinical trials addressing the prevalence of LBP in adolescent athletes and those in existence typically focus on only a few select sports. Physical therapy (PT) is shown to improve function and manage symptoms for adolescent athletes with muscle imbalance, hypermobility, and core weakness in outpatient rehabilitation, however there is a shortage of literature on young female pitchers with LBP. The purpose of this case report is to describe the PT management …
