The scope of cancer treatment in women of childbearing age has changed in the last decade. Fertility preservation is no longer an afterthought but central to multi-disciplinary cancer treatment planning and should be addressed due to the cytotoxic effects of cancer therapy. However, oncology patients present as a unique treatment challenge as the physician must balance the urgency of fertility preservation with the risks of delaying cancer therapy. Controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) is routinely applied in assisted reproductive technology but can be contraindicated in women with estrogen-receptor-positive tumors. This paper reviews some of the challenges to consider when using COS …
Use Of Mobility Devices In Developing Countries; A Comparative Literature Review Introducing The Contextual Factors Surrounding Accessibility And Use Of Mobility Devices In Ghana, Bangladesh, And Guatemala., Bethany Shadel
Honors Theses
Disability in the developing world encompasses 10% of the global population and much of that population requires the use of a mobility device in order to engage in meaningful occupation. The use and accessibility of mobility devices is shaped by the significance of the barriers surrounding mobility. This research looks comparatively at the factors affecting accessibility and the use of mobility devices in three developing countries; Ghana, Bangladesh, and Guatemala. Trends within literature revealed that economic, environmental, and cultural barriers all had an impact on accessibility. Overall, this study determines that accessibility solutions are not possible without removing barriers to …

The Hidden Cost Of The Recession: Two Million Fewer Births And Still Counting, Kenneth M. Johnson
The Hidden Cost Of The Recession: Two Million Fewer Births And Still Counting, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
The Great Recession sent an economic shock through American society that reached far beyond the stock and housing markets, including the substantial long-term impact the Great Recession is having on U.S. births. Nearly 2.3 million fewer babies were born in the United States between 2008 and 2013 than would have been expected if pre-recession fertility rates had been sustained (see Figure 1). In each of the last three years, this birth deficit has resulted in nearly 500,000 fewer births.

Vagal nerve stimulation in cardiac therapy involves delivering electrical current to the vagal sympathetic complex in patients experiencing heart failure. The therapy has shown promise but the mechanisms by which any benefit accrues is not understood. In this paper we model the response to increased levels of stimulation of individual components of the vagal sympathetic complex as a differential activation of each component in the control of heart rate. The model provides insight beyond what is available in the animal experiment in as much as allowing the simultaneous assessment of neuronal activity throughout the cardiac neural axis. The results indicate …

Psychotic Diagnosis And Artist Pathology: Schizophrenic Art’S Influence On The Identification Of The Disorder, Danielle Watson
Psychotic Diagnosis And Artist Pathology: Schizophrenic Art’S Influence On The Identification Of The Disorder, Danielle Watson
Honors Projects
The use of artwork created by schizophrenic individuals is unique in its contextual elements, including bizarre imagery, strong border lines, and desexualized features. The uniqueness of schizophrenic art lends itself to the possibility of being identified as such, therefore, opening the possibility for it to be used as a diagnostic tool in the clinical setting. Presently, schizophrenic art is used in art therapy, but is not widely employed in diagnostic practices. The current study aimed to test the possible identification of schizophrenic art in contrast to normal art and no art. Three questionnaires were created and randomly distributed to participants. …

Tuberculosis Interferon-Gamma Responses In The Breast Milk Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infected Mothers, Lisa Cranmer, Mercy Kanyugo, Barbara Lohman-Payne, Ken Tapia, Grace John-Stewart
Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications
Tuberculosis (TB) cellular immune responses were examined in breastmilk of HIV-infected mothers using the T-SPOT.TB interferon gamma release assay (IGRA). Positive TB IFN-γ responses were detected in 6 of 8 (75%) valid breast milk assays. Among 7 mothers with paired breastmilk and blood assays, TB IFN- γ responses were higher in breastmilk compared to blood (p=.02). The magnitude of TB IFN-γ responses in maternal breastmilk and blood were correlated. Elucidating the influence of breastmilk TB immune responses on infant TB susceptibility and immunity may inform future maternal TB vaccine strategies.

Goliath Vs. 24 Davids: Federalism And Legal Marijuana, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In recent years popular sentiment – on issues like marriage equality and legalization of medical marijuana – has molded law and policy in its own image. On the horizon is growing support for physician aid in dying and a deeper personal stake in end of life decisions. Each of these initiatives has been cultivated at the state level, often in the face of rigid federal government rejection of favorable social and scientific evidence.
State and federal conflicts are not new, but rarely has the US government displayed more intransigence than in the arena of marijuana prohibition.
Evaluating Management Strategies For Urban Stormwater Runoff, Corrina M. Fleischmann
Evaluating Management Strategies For Urban Stormwater Runoff, Corrina M. Fleischmann
Doctoral Dissertations
Urban stormwater runoff, a leading cause of waterway impairment, has become a focal point of urban stormwater management strategies. As urbanization increases, regulations demanding preservation of pre-development peak flow rates or runoff volumes have been implemented and low impact development (LID) is encouraged as a strategy to achieve this stormwater runoff reduction requirement. While the success of LID has been proven at the site-scale, limited watershed-scale assessment of LID has been conducted. This research explores the potential benefit of watershed-scale LID implementation on two common urban stormwater issues: degraded stream health and combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Assessment results indicate that …

Law 101 And Minority Languages In Quebec, Rebecca Dubord
Honors Theses
Quebec‟s historic Law 101, or the Charter of French Language, has been the subject of controversy in Quebec and the entirety of Canada since its inception in 1977. Whether this law has had its intended effect on the province of Quebec, or had any effect at all, is what the people of Canada should be truly debating. Has the Charter of French Language had its intended effect of asserting the French language as the primary language in Quebec, or has English continued to dominate throughout the province? While the Charter of French Language is applicable only in the province of …

Western At War: Western Michigan College During World War Ii, Patrick Hargis
Honors Theses
This research paper examines the programs and policies put into action by Western Michigan College during World War II and how the war shaped the college. This research primarily utilized primary documents generated by the college’s wartime committee, President Paul Sangren, yearbooks and other ephemera. Little research has been done in this area focused on Western Michigan College, and the little research that has been done has focused on the Navy V-12 program that existed on campus at the time. While this research includes the V-12 program, as well as the various other military programs active at the time, a …
The Impact Of Prenatal Stress On The Development Of Limbic System Structures, Alyssa Murray
The Impact Of Prenatal Stress On The Development Of Limbic System Structures, Alyssa Murray
Honors Theses
Stress in early life is well documented as detrimental for the brain’s developmental trajectory, while prenatal stress is minimally explored. In the prenatal period, the placenta prevents much of the mother’s cortisol from reaching the fetus, but the fetus is still exposed to some maternal cortisol, and exposure increases with increasing stress. One neural structure particularly susceptible to stress is the hippocampus. The goal of this review is to address the role prenatal stress may play in damaging the hippocampus, a structure integral to learning and memory functions. Correlations between prenatal stress and a reduction in volume and function of …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI), an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ENPP1 gene, manifests with extensive mineralization of the cardiovascular system. The affected individuals in most cases die within the first year of life, and there is currently no effective treatment for this disorder. In this study, we characterized a spontaneous mutant mouse, asj-2J, as a model for GACI. These mice were identified as part of a phenotypic deviant search in a large-scale production colony of BALB/cJ mice at The Jackson Laboratory. They demonstrated a characteristic gait due to stiffening of the joints, with phenotypic similarity …
A Descriptive Mixed-Methods Study Examining Resilience And Transitioning To Adulthood Among Emerging Adults With Disabilities, Jennifer E. Mannino
A Descriptive Mixed-Methods Study Examining Resilience And Transitioning To Adulthood Among Emerging Adults With Disabilities, Jennifer E. Mannino
Theses & Dissertations
Transitioning to adulthood is not without challenges. The move away from family influence towards independence and self-determination is filled with uncertainty. As emerging adults (18-29) transition to adulthood they will encounter various challenges related to their new adult roles (Arnett & Tanner, 2005; Jensen & Arnett, 2012). Increased challenges and vulnerabilities in transitioning are evident among emerging adults with disabilities because they face additional challenges related to their disability over and above what all others of this developmental stage experience (Betz & Redcay, 2002; Blomquist, 2007; Faux & Nehring, 2010; King, Baldwin, Currie & Evans, 2005; Murray, 2003; National Research …

Jefferson Combats Deadliest Form Of Skin Cancer
Jefferson Combats Deadliest Form Of Skin Cancer
Jefferson Surgical Solutions
When people think of skin cancer, they often think of basal cell and squamous cell cancers. But the deadliest form is melanoma.
As surgical oncologist Adam Berger, MD, FACS, explains, melanoma comes from a different type of cell in the skin. Unlike basal cell and squamous cell cancers, which usually do not spread, melanoma is much more aggressive. In fact, while melanoma accounts for less than 2 percent of skin cancer cases, it causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.
In addition to melanoma excisions (surgical removal of lesions), Dr. Berger performs a diagnostic procedure known as a sentinel …

Progress with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
Most of us have been following the news concerning the ACA. The first open enrollment period closed on March 31, 2014. A late surge pushed the number of enrollees through the individual marketplaces to about 8 million, which exceeded Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expectations. The coverage gains mandated for young adults have decremented their number without health insurance by between 1 and 3 million. All health care plans must now meet comprehensive benefits standards (bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels), and over 28 states and D.C. are moving forward on Medicaid expansion.
