Pathways To Sustainable Development, Ishrat Husain Dr. Dec 2014

Pathways To Sustainable Development, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I would venture to broaden the scope of sustainable Development to include shared growth. After innumerable debates and discussions among the academic, practitioners and civil society Organizations, it has now been established that the concept of economic growth synonymous with increases in per capita income is too narrow and limiting. Various alternative conventional concepts such as Quality of Growth, Pattern of Growth, Growth with Redistribution, and Inclusive Growth have entered the vocabulary at several periods of time. One of the lessons we have learnt from the experience of the past few decades is that rapid economic growth has led to …

Recruitment Patterns Of The Fouling Community On Eelgrass In Long Island Sound, Diana Lancaster Dec 2014

Recruitment Patterns Of The Fouling Community On Eelgrass In Long Island Sound, Diana Lancaster

Master's Theses

The seagrass Zostera marina (eelgrass) is typically found in shallow protected areas of portions of eastern Long Island Sound (LIS). Although the species and its associated ecosystem have been well studied in many places, work in LIS has been limited. A field study was conducted to assess the fouling communities associated with eelgrass beds around Pine Island, in eastern LIS. Samples were collected from four sites between July and October, 2011. A total of 15 species of fouling organisms were found on eelgrass leaves throughout the study period. Recruitment patterns varied spatially and temporally. Differences in the composition of fouling …

Review: Compassionate Care For The Living And The Dying, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This is a review of "The End of End-of Life Law" (92 N.C.L. Rev. 1693 (2014), by Lois L. Shepard. In light of medical advances and increasing health care costs, conversations about end-of-life care will continue to occur. A significant portion of the discussion will focus on ways to handle surrogate decision-making. The practical suggestions Professor Shepherd includes in her article could be a valuable part of that dialogue.

Nanopulse Generators: Their Design And Application To Cancer Therapy Studies, Daniel P. Wernig Dec 2014

Nanopulse Generators: Their Design And Application To Cancer Therapy Studies, Daniel P. Wernig

Senior Honors Theses

Effective nanopulse generators have become critical in recent decades concerning the study of subcellular affects in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields. It has been observed that nanosecond duration electric pulses can target intracellular organelles, ultimately leading to cell apoptosis, suggesting the possibility of a new, minimally invasive, low risk cancer therapy methodology. The standard topology for developing a medical nanopulser is the Blumlein “transmission line” approach. This approach relies on the nearly infinitesimal, yet finite amount of time required for an electromagnetic field to propagate down a short transmission line. Prior to design, requirements and constraints must be defined …

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole Dec 2014

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

While several studies have reported a decrement in performance by older adults while walking and concurrently performing a dual task on even surfaces, to date the effects of dual tasking while walking on uneven surfaces commonly found in the community has received less attention. Thus, we sought to test the hypothesis that an incremental decrement in gait parameters will be observed, when walking on an uneven versus an even surface and furthermore, that this decrement would be dependent upon the concurrent performance of a secondary cognitive and/or motor task in functionally independent-living-community older adults.

Dynamic Gait Index assessed the subject’s …

Assessing Cultural Competence In Health Professional Student's, Sophia Jones

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background-The United States has become a more diverse society and healthcare professionals must be ready to meet the needs of this more culturally diverse society. Students studying in the many areas of healthcare must learn to be culturally competent. To ensure that students are culturally competent and can provide culturally competent care routed in a global perspective their abilities must be developed and assessed. With the absence of any such assessment tool in the literature reviewed the objective set forth in a preliminary study was to develop a tool to assess cultural competence from a global perspective. With this …

A Randomized Noninferiority Trial Of Condensed Protocols For Genetic Risk Disclosure Of Alzheimer's Disease, Peter J. Whitehouse, Melissa Barber Butson

Faculty Scholarship

Introduction Conventional multisession genetic counseling is currently recommended when disclosing apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype for the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in cognitively normal individuals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of brief disclosure protocols for disclosing APOE genotype for the risk of AD. Methods A randomized, multicenter noninferiority trial was conducted at four sites. Participants were asymptomatic adults having a first-degree relative with AD. A standard disclosure protocol by genetic counselors (SP-GC) was compared with condensed protocols, with disclosures by genetic counselors (CP-GC) and by physicians (CP-MD). Preplanned co-primary outcomes were anxiety and depression scales …

To Yoder Or Not To Yoder? How The Spending Clause Holding In National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius Can Be Used To Challenge The No Child Left Behind Act, Christopher Roma Dec 2014

To Yoder Or Not To Yoder? How The Spending Clause Holding In National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius Can Be Used To Challenge The No Child Left Behind Act, Christopher Roma

Pace Law Review

States such as California, Texas, Montana, Nebraska and Pennsylvania all have either declined to apply for waivers out of the testing, accountability, and penalty schemes of No Child Left Behind; or, have had their applications rejected by the Department of Education. This Article argues that these states would have a legitimate challenge to NCLB as unconstitutionally coercive based on the precedent of Sebelius. As discussed more in the sections that follow, not only is NCLB and Title I the largest federal funding program behind Medicaid, it also shares many of the characteristics that the opinions in Sebelius found to be …

Meaningful Involvement In Collections: Should Ethics Or The Fdcpa Govern?, Jeffrey S. Peters Dec 2014

Meaningful Involvement In Collections: Should Ethics Or The Fdcpa Govern?, Jeffrey S. Peters

Pace Law Review

This Note will explain and analyze the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and its case law. It will also discuss the interplay between the FDCPA case law and its ethical overtones. To understand the basis of this issue, Part II of this Note will begin by briefly developing the history and background of the FDCPA and discuss specific sections of the law designed to protect debtors from abusive debt collection practices. Notably, these sections relate to the prevention of improper practices for misleading debtors, and are the focus of the lawsuits that this Note will discuss. Accordingly, Part III …

Tipping The Scales In Favor Of Charitable Bequests: A Critique, Elizabeth R. Carter Dec 2014

Tipping The Scales In Favor Of Charitable Bequests: A Critique, Elizabeth R. Carter

Pace Law Review

The public policy favoring testamentary bequests to charities is well established in the law. However, that public policy can, and does, conflict with other equally well-founded public policies. When confronted with this conflict, courts are often dismissive or even hostile towards the parties seeking to challenge a testamentary bequest to a charity. I argue that the policy favoring charitable giving has gone too far and has, in some instances, undermined other important public policies. Specifically, courts and legislators have strengthened the charitable bequest policy without giving enough consideration to other, equally important public policies. This problem is not new. History …

Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, Social Status, And Well-Being Among English Language Proficient Immigrants, Darren R. Bernal Dec 2014

Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, Social Status, And Well-Being Among English Language Proficient Immigrants, Darren R. Bernal

Open Access Dissertations

The effects of social status on well-being are pervasive (American Psychological Association Task Force on Socioeconomic Status, 2006; Marmot, 2004). Social status has been proposed to play a role (Berry, 1987; Padilla & Perez, 2003) in the complex association between both acculturation and acculturative stress and psychological well-being (Koneru, 2007). Subjective Social Status is a promising method of measuring social status (Adler, 2013) that has not been examined in regard to immigrants’ well-being. In an attempt to fill this gap in the literature, this study explored questions about immigrants’ well-being as they acculturate to and deal with acculturative stressors in …

Kháos For Percussion Solo And Quartet: A Journey Through And Inside The Five Grand Impermanences, Rodrigo Bussad Cesar Dec 2014

Kháos For Percussion Solo And Quartet: A Journey Through And Inside The Five Grand Impermanences, Rodrigo Bussad Cesar

Open Access Theses

KHÁOS is a large-scale percussion piece for solo percussion and quartet. It is divided into two grand parts that contain five movements in total. The impulse behind writing this piece is based on the seasonal cycle and its relations to the Book of Changes. From my earliest memories, my thoughts were directed towards the East. To this day I recall the overwhelming reaction I had when first introduced to the I Ching. Shortly thereafter, I was introduced to the concept of the active silence or Ma through the Music of Toru Takemitsu and his compositional journals. It was only natural …

The Effects Of Robot-Assisted Gait Training And Task-Specific Training On Adl Function And Mobility For A Patient After A Stroke: A Case Report, Maegen Johnson Dec 2014

The Effects Of Robot-Assisted Gait Training And Task-Specific Training On Adl Function And Mobility For A Patient After A Stroke: A Case Report, Maegen Johnson

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Robot-assisted gait devices have become increasingly popular as they have been shown to increase the likeliness of independent ambulation in patients who have had a stroke, while also decreasing the physical burden on the physical therapist. However, there has been minimal research investigating the impact of these devices on activities of daily living (ADL) function. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to describe the impact of robot-assisted gait training with task specific training on the ADL function and functional mobility of an individual who experienced a stroke. Case Description: The patient was a 71-year-old male …

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Research demonstrates a drastic increase in the prevalence of type-II superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) lesion repairs, and its surgical correction has become the favored method of treatment, because of its ability to effectively improve quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this case report is to document the examination, evaluation, and plan of care (POC) concerning a patient who was referred to physical therapy (PT) three months following the surgical correction of a type-II SLAP lesion. Case Description: The patient was a middle-aged male who was referred to PT for evaluation and treatment following an arthroscopic repair …

Special Olympics’ Employee Response To Organizational Change, Katelyn Disbrow

Sport Management Undergraduate

The purpose of the research study was to explore how Special Olympics’ staff groups differ in response to organizational change. The study was conducted in order to determine if there was a relationship between employees holding various positions within Special Olympics and their level of job satisfaction, specifically during times of change in the organization. Previously, there has been minimal research conducted in the non-profit sector, and Special Olympics exclusively, in terms of linking job satisfaction and organizational change. Thus very little was known on this particular topic. A survey was used in order to collect primary, quantitative data based …

Excited Delirium Syndrome And Conducted Electrical Weapons, Adam A. Nielsen Dec 2014

Excited Delirium Syndrome And Conducted Electrical Weapons, Adam A. Nielsen

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) is defined as delirium coupled with extreme agitation (Vilke et al., 2012). ExDS is a bona fide medical condition that requires immediate medical attention, as 8% of patients will die from it. Some research only classifies ExDS as "true ExDS" if the subject dies; most research does not and this research does not wish to exclude the 92% of ExDS cases where the subject does not die. ExDS is well known because it oftentimes comes into play during and after a violent encounter with law enforcement. Because over 7,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies use TASER© brand …
