Effects Of Physical Activity On Academic Performance & Cognitive Development, Jared Tucker
Effects Of Physical Activity On Academic Performance & Cognitive Development, Jared Tucker
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study is to review literature about the correlation between physical activity and academic performance. It will also be attempted to explain this phenomenon by identifying the impact of exercise on cognitive processes. Studies show that physical activity has a positive linear correlation to academic test scores; specifically in reading and math. Comparisons of FitnessGram Software scores and standardized testing reveal that students' overall level of physical fitness is predictive of academic prowess and that as achievement of healthy zone increased, so did the likelihood of higher academic achievement. The cognitive functions of the brain are believed …
Changing Places: Adult Children And The Transition Of Aging Parents, Sarah Martin Gilbert
Changing Places: Adult Children And The Transition Of Aging Parents, Sarah Martin Gilbert
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This dissertation analyzed measurement of relocation transition in older adults, assessed research for the manner in which older adults make the decision to move, and the adult child's role in the transition of their aging parents. Design: Using Hawker, Payne, Kerr, Hardey, & Powell's (2002) mixed research review method, two integrative reviews were conducted. The first examined how relocation transition is measured in the literature while the second applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985) to determine the behavioral beliefs, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control of older adults as they contemplate a relocation from independent living to …
The Effects Of Subjective And Objective Caregiver Burden On The Depressive Symptomology Of A Disabled Older Adult Care Recipient, Deborah Blessing Ejem
The Effects Of Subjective And Objective Caregiver Burden On The Depressive Symptomology Of A Disabled Older Adult Care Recipient, Deborah Blessing Ejem
All ETDs from UAB
Depression is a leading mental health issue effecting the aging population. The current body of research contends that stress, social disconnectedness, and disability are possible causes of depression. Research, however, widely neglects the study of caregiver burden as other probable causes of depression in this group. This study investigates subjective and objective caregiver burden as possible causes of adverse mental health for a non-institutionalized older adult care recipient. Additionally, the conditional effects of race/ethnic background of the care recipient are evaluated using the most recent wave of the National Long Term Care Study (NLTCS) and using both the life stress …

Percentile Ranks For Walking Speed In Subjects 70-79 Years: A Meta-Analysis, James Roush, R. Curtis Bay
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
It has been suggested that walking speed is the sixth vital sign. To adequately assess the status of walking speed of patients, normative data or percentile ranks are required. The purpose of this study was to develop percentile ranks for walking speed using a meta-analytic approach for independent, community-dwelling males and females between 70 and 79 years of age. Using PubMed and CINAHL, articles were included in the analysis if: 1) subjects were between 70 and 79 years of age; 2) “walking speed” was described as “comfortable,” “preferred,” “usual,” “normal,” or “self-selected”; 3) subjects were classified as independent and community-dwelling; …
Elder Self-Neglect And Adult Protective Services: Ohio Needs To Do More, William White
Elder Self-Neglect And Adult Protective Services: Ohio Needs To Do More, William White
Journal of Law and Health
Ohio APS statutes are antiquated, do not reflect the increasingly complex needs of self-neglecting elderly, and need to be changed to decrease the likelihood of significant self-harm or even death, as represented in the story of Carlene. Section II of this paper provides background information on elder self-neglect and APS. Section III discusses why Ohio needs to mandate that APS jurisdiction includes nursing facilities and how the law could be effectively changed. Section IV discusses how APS interventions need to evolve to meet the diverse needs of the growing elderly population; a singular investigative response no longer fits for every …
Inner-Peace And Physical Health: Peace Of Mind And Physical Health Among Rhode Island Older Adults, Thupten Tendhar
Inner-Peace And Physical Health: Peace Of Mind And Physical Health Among Rhode Island Older Adults, Thupten Tendhar
Open Access Master's Theses
The number of older adults increases globally year after year at an unprecedented rate, and so does their healthcare expenditure. This trend is similar in Rhode Island. The proportion of older adults relative to the general population is rising sharply in this smallest state in the US. The quality of later life and well-being of the older adults remains questionable for many, due to the increasing chronic disease burden associated with advanced age.
The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between inner-peace and physical health, with the aim of developing a clearer picture to improve the health …

The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee
The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee
Honors Theses
Humans are socially driven creatures that require constant interaction. One way humans have consistently expressed their social nature since prehistory is through sharing meals. Recent studies and literature were examined in order to investigate the roots behind why sharing meals has been the most consistent method of social output. Through careful reading and analysis, reasons behind why people share meals were traced in perspective levels. The biological and molecular aspect explains how humans evolved from prehistoric primates and their similarities associated with food consumption. Genetics and food preferences also play a role by allowing humans to taste food rather than …

The project was conducted on buccal epithelial cells collected from mechanical-workshop workers and controls. Epithelial cells were obtained from the inner part of the cheeks. Techniques including comet assay, micronuclei test, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction were used to assess DNA damage biomarkers. The results showed that there was a significant difference in relative telomere length (P = 0.039) between wild and mutated genotypes among all individuals. Furthermore, occupational exposure showed …
Applying The Biopsychosocial Model: Factors Associated With Depression In Mexican-American Adults, Alison B. Ross
Applying The Biopsychosocial Model: Factors Associated With Depression In Mexican-American Adults, Alison B. Ross
Scripps Senior Theses
Although professionals in psychiatry, psychology and medicine claim to endorse the biopsychosocial model as proposed by George L. Engel (1977), clinicians in all three fields still tend to underutilize it. Some academics have also criticized the model for its inadequate emphasis on cultural contextualization. To improve upon the model, I sought to empirically establish the relationship between culturally-specific social factors and psychological disorder, in this case depressive symptoms in Mexican-American adults. Eighty-six Mexican-American participants living on the US-Mexico border completed scales measuring depressive symptoms, bidirectional acculturation, living situation, diabetes, and health beliefs regarding the origins of diabetes. The results revealed …

ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF QUALITY OF CARE IN NURSING HOMES
This dissertation examines the factors that will affect nursing home quality of care using several national data sources on market regulation, county demographic characteristics, market structural and the characteristics of different types of long-term care providers in 2010.
The first study examines how nine different measures of nursing home care quality respond to the greater levels of local market competition from these alternative providers of long-term care, as well as other nursing homes. Findings reveal that faced with greater competition from assisted living facilities, nursing homes are left to care for …
Cognitive Effects And Academic Consequences Of Video Game Playing, Sean Hollis
Cognitive Effects And Academic Consequences Of Video Game Playing, Sean Hollis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: prior video game playing (vgp) research has generated mixed empirical findings. Recent studies suggested positive effects vgp may have on cognitive skills, particularly improvements in visuospatial skills, processing speed, working memory, multitasking, and problem solving skills. By contrast, other studies have suggested that vgp leads to lower academic performance - indicating further research on vgp effects is needed. This study investigated the effects of vgp on cognitive skills and academic performance. Methods: 208 participants were recruited from the University of Mississippi psychology department in exchange for research participation credit. The sample was 68.9% female and 31.1% male. Ages ranged …

Telehealth: Preparing Advanced Practice Nurses To Address Healthcare Needs In Rural And Underserved Populations, Carolyn M. Rutledge, Tina Haney, Michele Bordelon, Michelle Renaud, Christianne Fowler
Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Healthcare is being confronted with questions on how to deliver quality, affordable, and timely care to patients, especially those in rural areas, in systems already burdened by the lack of providers. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) have been challenged to lead this movement in providing care to these populations through the use of technologies, specifically telehealth. Unfortunately, APRNs have limited exposure to telehealth during their educational experience, thereby limiting their understanding and comfort with telehealth. To address this problem, a telehealth program was developed at a large university that prepares Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) APRN students. The telehealth program, …
Social Security And Divorce, Marcus Dillender
Social Security And Divorce, Marcus Dillender
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
People who have divorced are entitled to Social Security spousal benefits if their marriages lasted at least ten years. This paper uses 1985–1995 Vital Statistics data and the 2008–2011 American Community Surveys to analyze how this rule affects divorce decisions. I find evidence that the ten-year rule results in a small increase in divorces for the general population; however, the effects vary greatly by age. Divorce decisions change very little for people under the age of 35. For people 55 and older, however, divorces increase by approximately 20 percent around the ten-year cutoff, which leads to an increase in the …

The Rise Of Non-Marital Cohabitation: Review And Analysis Of Existing Research, Natalia Mosailova
The Rise Of Non-Marital Cohabitation: Review And Analysis Of Existing Research, Natalia Mosailova
University Honors Theses
Beginning in the 1970's, young adults are more likely to announce that they are moving in with a partner rather than entering marriage. As rates of legal marriage between ages 16-26 are continuing to decline, the rates of cohabitation are rising two-fold. Compared to previous decades, individuals in our society are now more hesitant to enter marriage and are more likely to try out their relationships through cohabitation before making a commitment. Archival research on pre-engagement cohabitation suggests that, contrary to popular culture beliefs, pre-engagement cohabitation is a predictor of both marital divorce in marriages and relationship dissatisfaction. Despite the …
