Desk Jockey: A Device To Increase Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (Neat) In Adults, Jiangqi Tang
Wayne State University Theses
Increased sedentary behavior, just like reduced physical activity, has been shown to increase the risk of obesity and chronic diseases. This is mostly due to increased time spent sitting at the office desk. There is limited research studying how to decrease such risk in office workers (OW). This study was to investigate a portable device "Desk Jockey" (DJ) on increasing NEAT and reducing sedentary behavior in a simulated office environment. Participants whose daily work requiring long sitting hours were recruited (mean sitting hours/day: 8.6 ± 3 hr, mean age: 25 ± 7 yr, 54% male, 15% obese). Metabolic rates (METs), …
The Relationship Between Stress And Dementia: An Investigation Of Physiological And Psychological Connections Across The Lifespan, Andrew Kuck
Honors Projects
While many studies have examined the relationship between stress and dementia, there is no general consensus on what the relationship is, or even whether such a relationship exists at all (Fountoulakis, 2011; Wang, 2012). This literature review consequently considers a broad range of hypotheses on the topic. The central focus of this review was to identify what aspects of stress – throughout life – increase the likelihood of dementia in the elderly. The available research indicates that there is indeed a relationship between stress and dementia, and that stress interacts with dementia risk in multiple ways. There is, first of …

How Old We Are & How Old We Feel, Trevor Fry, Collin Keating, Diana Mcswain, Patrice Frazier, Christin Quinn, Andrea Zimmerman
2014 Symposium
Many researchers assess differences in age as a distinct independent variable for a wide range of empirical analyses. However, subjective age (how old people feel) is a construct that has been relatively neglected in the literature. The purpose of the current study was to assess the relationship between chronological age and subjective age, as well as subjective age differences between genders. As part of a larger study, 95 participants completed the Subjective Age Questionnaire (Montepare, Rierdan, Koff, & Stubbs, 1989) including 5 items on a 7-point Likert scale. Reported subjective age was subtracted by chronological age (age discrepancy) for comparison …

Obtaining Efficiencies In Food-Borne Illness Protection For Residential, Health Department-Licensed, And Non-Licensed Entities, Ted W. Talley
Obtaining Efficiencies In Food-Borne Illness Protection For Residential, Health Department-Licensed, And Non-Licensed Entities, Ted W. Talley
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Severe storms, natural disasters, and other emergencies resulting in extended periods of power loss can negatively impact public health as the likelihood of food-borne illnesses resulting from the consumption of food products held in refrigerators and freezers at improper temperatures is greatly increased. Additionally, food products used or served during emergency responses present additional challenges as many of the products may have other risk factors often associated with food-borne illness outbreaks. These include food from unsafe sources (food prepared in a facility not subject to regulation or inspection), improper cooking temperatures, preparation on contaminated food contact surfaces, and poor hygienic …
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome: Pathophysiology And Possible Treatments, Pearl Hersh
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome: Pathophysiology And Possible Treatments, Pearl Hersh
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Named after the two scientists who independently described the condition, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) occurs due to a mutation in the LMNA gene that codes for Lamin A, a filament protein that acts to form the nuclear lamina in the cell nucleus. This mutation is a single C-to-T substitution at nucleotide 1824 of the LMNA gene. As a result of this mutation, an abnormal protein named 'progerin' is synthesized instead of Lamin A, causing the nuclear membrane to be malformed. Since protein farnesylation is needed to target progerin to the nuclear rim, farnesyltransferase inhibitor has been proposed as a form …

Apoptotic Neurodegeneration In The Developing Human Brain: Possible Role Of General Anesthetics In Its Genesis, And Of L-Carnitine In Its Reversal, Yisroel Yitzchok Rosenfeld
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Recent studies suggest that general anesthetic (GA) agents administered to developing rats, through its mechanism as an NMDA antagonist or a GABAa mimetic, may damage developing neural cells by inducing a higher rate of programmed cell death (apoptosis). Similar heightened degeneration was also apparent in higher primates such as the monkey. This warrants strong concern, as every year thousands of pregnant women and children below 1 year of age undergo a surgical procedure in which GAs are used. A spike in neuroapoptosis may lead to long term cognitive deficiencies lingering into adulthood. Are humans vulnerable to these affects? Different pathways …

In this design case, a team developed a 3D interactive simulation for nursing students and professional nurses to train and practice pain assessment and management procedures. In the simulation environment, the trainees interact with three emotionally expressive animated patients. The three patients vary in their ethnicity, age, and emotion intensity. Successful completion of the scenario requires that the trainee perform of a series of pain assessment and management tasks. The trainee is evaluated on the efficiency and appropriate sequencing of the tasks.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the decisions made regarding the type of virtual patients used, …
Comparison Of Body Composition Measures In Older Adult Males, Cody Smith
Comparison Of Body Composition Measures In Older Adult Males, Cody Smith
Honors Projects
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure created to assess population wide staistics of obesity and stratify health risk. However, there are large differences in health risk when comparing BMI with measures of body composition. BMI is not a measure of body composition. Body composition measures are used to distinguish between fat mass, fat-free mass. This percent body fat is more significantly correlated with health risk.
This study analyzed various body composition methodologies including waist circumference at the umbilicus and at the narrowest point of the abdomen, sagittal abdominal diameter, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and air displacement plethysmography. The study’s purpose …

The Contribution Of Visceral Fat To Improved Insulin Signaling In Ames Dwarf Mice, Vinal Menon, Xu Zhi, Tanvir Hossain, Andrzej Bartke, Adam Spong, Adam Gesing, Michal M. Masternak
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Ames dwarf (Prop1df, df/df) mice are characterized by growth hormone (GH), prolactin, and thyrotropin deficiency, remarkable extension of longevity and increased insulin sensitivity with low levels of fasting insulin and glucose. Plasma levels of anti-inflammatory adiponectin are increased in df/df mice, while pro-inflammatory IL-6 is decreased in plasma and epididymal fat. This represents an important shift in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory adipokines in adipose tissue, which was not exposed to GH signals during development or adult life. To determine the role of adipose tissue in the control of insulin signaling in these long-living mutants, we examined the effects …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
The development of more predictive and biologically relevant in vitro assays is predicated on the advancement of versatile cell culture systems which facilitate the functional assessment of the seeded cells. To that end, microscale cantilever technology offers a platform with which to measure the contractile functionality of a range of cell types, including skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells, through assessment of contraction induced substrate bending. Application of multiplexed cantilever arrays provides the means to develop moderate to high-throughput protocols for assessing drug efficacy and toxicity, disease phenotype and progression, as well as neuromuscular and other cell-cell interactions. This manuscript …
The Use Of Physical Restraints Among Nursing Home Residents: Do Disparities Exist?, Shekinah Fashaw
The Use Of Physical Restraints Among Nursing Home Residents: Do Disparities Exist?, Shekinah Fashaw
HIM 1990-2015
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to examine how nursing home (NH) characteristics, specifically racial composition of nursing homes residents, influences the use of physical restraints. As the population ages and becomes more diverse, it is essential to mitigate/eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in quality care. Methods: This is cross-sectional study using a 2010 national data set from Brown University Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research. This study employs Donabedian's Structure-Process-Outcome (SPO) conceptual framework. Statistical analysis includes univariate, bivariate, and a logistic regression model. It is hypothesized that nursing homes with higher proportions of black residents, more Medicaid residents, and for-profit …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Recently, the Dynavision (TM) D2 Visuomotor Training Device (D2) has emerged as a tool in the assessment of reaction time (RT); however, information regarding the reliability of the D2 have been limited, and to date, reliability data have been limited to non-generalizable samples. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,1) for the D2 that are generalizable across a population of recreationally active young adults. Forty-two recreationally active men and women (age: 23.41 +/- 4.84 years; height: 1.72 +/- 0.11 m; mass: 76.62 +/- 18.26 Kg) completed 6 trials for three RT tasks of increasing …

The Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Insulin Signaling In Skeletal Muscle And Adipose Tissue Of Ames Dwarf Mice, Denise S. Wiesenborn, Vinal Menon, Xu Zhi, Andrew Do, Adam Gesing, Zhihui Wang, Andrzek Bartke, Deborah A. Altomare, Michal M. Masternak
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Long-living Ames dwarf (df/df) mice are homozygous for a mutation of the Prop1(df) gene. As a result, mice are deficient in growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and thyrotropin (TSH). In spite of the hormonal deficiencies, df/df mice live significantly longer and healthier lives compared to their wild type siblings. We studied the effects of calorie restriction (CR) on the expression of insulin signaling genes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of normal and df/df mice. The analysis of genes expression showed that CR differentially affects the insulin signaling pathway in these insulin target organs. Moreover, results obtained in both normal …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Background N-terminal peptide of procollagen type III (P3NP) and C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF) are circulating biomarkers that are related to lean body mass in older adults. P3NP is a circulating marker reflective of muscular structural remodeling while CAF is a circulating marker of neuromuscular remodeling. As resistance exercise is an established intervention that can effectively improve muscle quality, we sought to evaluate circulating biomarker changes corresponding to a resistance exercise intervention in older adults. Methods Twenty-three older adults (aged 61 to 85 years) were randomized into an intervention (6-week resistance training) or control group. Resting circulating P3NP, CAF, lean body …
