Mechanisms Of Differential Toxicity Between Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Castes With An Emphasis On Coumaphos, Lizette Dahlgren
Mechanisms Of Differential Toxicity Between Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Castes With An Emphasis On Coumaphos, Lizette Dahlgren
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Acaricides are used to treat honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies to control the parasitic Varroa mite (Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman), a worldwide threat to honey bee health. As such, these compounds act as drugs to mitigate bee losses but may also stress the bees. This dissertation quantifies differences between queen and worker tolerance of five acaricides and clarifies the honey bee mechanism of tolerance for coumaphos. Selected acaricides were topically applied to adult queen and worker bees to generate dose-response curves and LD50s. Twenty-four hours after treatment, queens were 3-times more tolerant of tau-fluvalinate …
Food Intake Of Hospitalized Older Adults After Exposure To Volunteer Feeding Program, Rebekah Grace Presley
Food Intake Of Hospitalized Older Adults After Exposure To Volunteer Feeding Program, Rebekah Grace Presley
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Context: Malnutrition proves to be a significant issue for hospitalized older adults. The number of physiological, social, and psychological problems they experience increases their risk for malnourishment, only worsening their admitting diagnoses. Research shows that social interaction is crucial to food intake. Many geriatric patients do not receive the interaction or encouragement they need while they eat. A hospital in Northwest Arkansas desired to prevent this negative cycle by implementing a volunteer program assisting older adults during meals. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate this type of program for its effectiveness, determining if food intake increases with …

How Functional Fitness Relates To Muscular Power Among Older Adults, Jessica Mae Moix
How Functional Fitness Relates To Muscular Power Among Older Adults, Jessica Mae Moix
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
The current study examined the relationship between functional fitness measures and muscular power among older adults. A 30-second chair stand test, 10-meter habitual walking test, and an 8-foot up-and-go test were all used as measures of functional fitness and muscular power was measured by Tendo analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine what aspects of functional fitness were associated with muscular power while then provide evidence that functional fitness can predict muscular power among older adults. Fifty-seven participants over 65 years old completed both the functional fitness and muscular power measures. Three separate correlations between functional fitness measures …

Introduction: African Americans (AAs) experience higher age-adjusted morbidity and mortality than Whites for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Church-based health programs can reduce risk factors for CVD, including elevated blood pressure [BP], excess body weight, sedentary lifestyle and diet. Yet few studies have incorporated older adults and longitudinal designs.
Purposes: The aims of this study are to: a) describe a theory-driven longitudinal intervention study to reduce CVD risk in mid-life and older AAs; b) compare selected dietary (fruit and vegetable servings/day, fat consumption), physical activity (PA) and clinical variables (BMI, girth circumferences, systolic and diastolic BP, LDL, HDL, total cholesterol …

Control of intracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca(2+)]i) is essential for neuronal function, and the plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase (PMCA) is crucial for the maintenance of low [Ca(2+)]i. We previously reported on loss of PMCA activity in brain synaptic membranes during aging. Gangliosides are known to modulate Ca(2+) homeostasis and signal transduction in neurons. In the present study, we observed age-related changes in the ganglioside composition of synaptic plasma membranes. This led us to hypothesize that alterations in ganglioside species might contribute to the age-associated loss of PMCA activity. To probe the relationship between changes in endogenous ganglioside content or composition and PMCA …

Characteristics Of Subjects Who Avoid Activities And Participation Due To A Fear Of Falling In Parkinson’S Disease, Morgan Lopker, Molly Newman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) exhibiting fear of falling avoidance behavior to those with no fear of falling avoidance behavior. Because avoidance behavior can have deleterious downstream consequences, it is important to determine what potentially mitigated physical and psychological factors are associated with it.
Subjects: Fifty-six community dwelling individuals (age=72.1 years, SD=9.6; males=42, females=14) with PD (Hoehn and Yahr Scale stage median=2.0, mode=3.0) were classified into two groups using the Fear of Falls Avoidance Behavior Questionnaire (FFABQ): avoiders (n=26, ≥20 FFABQ), and non-avoiders (n=30, <20 on the FFABQ).
Methods: Avoiders and non-avoiders were …

Factors Related To Depression In End-Stage Renal Disease Patients, Matthew Paul Mccurdy
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
High prevalence rates of depression have been well documented in patients with chronic kidney disease (Egede, 2007; U.S. Renal Data System, 2013). Furthermore, depression seems to play a major role in the mortality and morbidity rates of this population (Kellerman, Christensen, Baldwin, & Lawton, 2010; U.S. Renal Data System, 2013). Therefore this study aimed to discover factors that may influence depression in this population. Ten end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients’ depression scores were examined in relation to various sociodemographic measures. High depression scores had a significantly negative relationship with social functioning, overall quality of life, and age. A combined model …

An Inventory Of Evidence-Based Health And Wellness Assessments For Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Elliott David Brent, Matthew Jordan Carlson
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
It is estimated that by 2020 older adults will makeup one fifth of California's population. Many of these older adults are living in the community and are maintaining their independence. In order to help the older adults to maintain their independence, occupational therapists are turning to the newly emerged wellness promotion model to guide their practice. The wellness promotion model is a holistic model that addresses six domains of wellness (intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, emotional, and vocational). One of the concerns in using this model to guide the emerging practice area in occupational therapy is that there is little information …

Successful Aging In The United States And China : A Theoretical Basis To Guide Nursing Research, Practice, And Policy., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Hong Ji, Jiying Ling
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Successful aging is an idea gaining increasing attention given the exponential growth in the older adult population. Criteria and definitions within multiple disciplines vary greatly in Western literature, with no consensus on its meaning. Moreover, sociocultural, economic and political differences between the Western view of successful aging and its use in China – with the world’s largest older adult population – add to the confusion. Similarities and differences in the meaning of successful aging in the United States and China are examined and the potential for a common definition that is useful to nursing in both countries is explored. Using …
Age-Related Changes In Attention During Motor Learning, James E. Gardner
Age-Related Changes In Attention During Motor Learning, James E. Gardner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Theories of motor learning predict that humans require high levels of attention to perform new motor tasks, but little to no attention for those that are well-learned. Thus, practicing a task may decrease the amount of attention required to perform it. To test this theoretical relationship between attention and task practice, we used a physiological proxy for attention known as electrodermal activity (EDA). We hypothesized that 1) EDA (proxy for attention) would decrease over the course of training and that 2) attention would be higher overall in older adults than in younger adults when performing the same task. This second …
Effect Of Water Immersion And Jet Perturbation On Balance In Older And Younger Adults, Matthew Baldwin
Effect Of Water Immersion And Jet Perturbation On Balance In Older And Younger Adults, Matthew Baldwin
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Background: Although balance exercises are often performed in shallow pools, the efficacy of this practice is not well understood. Purpose: To quantify the effect of water depth and jet intensity on measures of balance in older and younger adults. Subjects: Sixteen older (age = 62.8 °” 9.56 yrs) and fifteen younger (age = 22.5 °” 1.85 yrs) adults. Methods: Posturography data were collected as participants stood quietly for 90 seconds on land and at various water depths and jet intensities. Results: Main effects < 0.001) and pairwise comparisons revealed that all measurements increased with increasing water depth and jet intensity, with older adults increasing statistically less than younger adults at higher jet intensities. Conclusions: Water immersion to the xiphoid process and water jet intensities at or above 40% seem to be environmental conditions that produce the greatest postural sway.
Does Motor Learning Generalize Between Distinct Functional Upper Extremity Tasks In Older Adults?, Bergen Elyse Lindauer
Does Motor Learning Generalize Between Distinct Functional Upper Extremity Tasks In Older Adults?, Bergen Elyse Lindauer
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Background: The process of motor learning can decline with age, such that older adults tend to learn new motor skills at a slower rate and to a lesser degree than younger adults. The degree to which aging affects the generalization of motor learning, however, is unclear.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to test whether task-specific training on one functional motor task would 1) result in motor learning, and 2) generalize to two untrained tasks in older adults.
Methods: Twenty-one adults age 65 years and older participated in this study and were assigned to either a training group or …

Psychometric Properties Of The Resourcefulness Scale Among Caregivers Of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene Zauszniewski
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Caregiving for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be very costly to caregivers’ well-being. Resourcefulness interventions have shown increases in positive health outcomes. However, before delivering the intervention, there should be a reliable and a valid measure to test resourcefulness. The psychometric properties of the Resourcefulness Scale (RS) have not been examined among ASD caregivers. This study examined the psychometrics of the 28-item RS in a convenience sample of 204 ASD caregivers. A Cronbach’s alpha of .91 showed the internal consistency of the RS. Construct validity was supported by the emergence of two dimensions of resourcefulness (personal and social) …
Preying On The Graying: A Statutory Presumption To Prosecute Elder Financial Exploitation, Andrew Jay Mcclurg
Preying On The Graying: A Statutory Presumption To Prosecute Elder Financial Exploitation, Andrew Jay Mcclurg
UC Law Journal
With seventy-eight million baby boomers in or nearing retirement, elder financial exploitation has been labeled the “Crime of the 21st Century,” yet little has been done to address the problem. While states and the federal government have passed hundreds of laws protecting children based on the assumption they are vulnerable and unable to protect themselves, older at-risk adults have been comparatively ignored despite extensive research showing they too are vulnerable. A substantial roadblock to prosecuting elder financial predators is the inability to prove that the financial transfers at issue were the result of exploitation rather than legitimate transactions. Many victims …

The Role Of Culture In Social Development Over The Lifespan: An Interpersonal Relations Approach, Isabelle Albert, Gisela Trommsdorff
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This article aims to illustrate the role of culture for individual development throughout the life span. First, theoretical approaches how culture affects the ontogenesis is presented, starting from early anthropological to recent eco-cultural and culture-informed approaches. Then, culture-specific conceptualizations of development over the life span are discussed, focusing on development in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Finally, we concentrate on selected areas of social development and report on recent studies on subjective theories, transmissions of values, and intergenerational relations. These studies are discussed as aspects of a more extended interpersonal relations approach to development within culture.

Many universities have begun using pet therapy on campus for student therapy and campus living. Leading news sources have reported that some campuses are now incorporating animal-assisted programs allowing students to have their pets …
Modeling Language Characteristics Of Leaders In Authoritarian Regimes Over Decades, Nia Marcia Maria Dowell
Modeling Language Characteristics Of Leaders In Authoritarian Regimes Over Decades, Nia Marcia Maria Dowell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present research investigated the linguistic patterns in the discourse of three prominent autocratic political leaders whose reigns lasted for multiple decades. The texts of Fidel Castro, Zedong Mao, and Hosni Mubarak were analyzed using computational linguistic methodologies and nonlinear modeling techniques to explore the temporal trajectory of formality over time. Specifically, this metric of formality increases with abstractness of words, syntactic complexity, cohesion (referential and deep), and the informational genre (as opposed to narrative). At the other end of the continuum, informal discourse tends to have concrete words, simple syntax, low cohesion and high narrativity. The findings are aligned …
