Effects Of Auditory And Visual Distracters On Acceptable Background Noise Level In Hearing-Impaired Listeners, Elizabeth A. Ripley May 2014

Effects Of Auditory And Visual Distracters On Acceptable Background Noise Level In Hearing-Impaired Listeners, Elizabeth A. Ripley

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Acceptable Noise Level (ANL), is an established procedure for determining the amount of background noise a listener is willing to accept while listening to speech. ANL is established by having the listener select most amount of background noise they are willing to accept while listening to a speech stimulus presented at their most comfortable listening level (MCL). While ANLs have been established as good predictors of hearing aid use, little is known on how hearing aid users accept background noise while engaged in cognitively demanding tasks. Previous research in normal hearing listeners has demonstrated that listeners will allow the most …

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Functional Capacity Card Sort: Measuring Caregiver Appraisal Of Functional Capacity In Persons With Dementia, Catherine V. Piersol, Phd, Otr/L May 2014

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Functional Capacity Card Sort: Measuring Caregiver Appraisal Of Functional Capacity In Persons With Dementia, Catherine V. Piersol, Phd, Otr/L

Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations

Background

Caregivers play a vital role in the safety and well-being of people with dementia

  • Majority of people with dementia live at home, are cared for by families or close friends/neighbors, and require supervision or assistance with daily activities

  • 80% of care provided in the home is delivered by unpaid caregivers (Alzheimer’s Association, 2013, Family Caregiver Alliance, 2006)

Functional capacity in the person with dementia is usually assessed by caregiver interview

  • Caregiver report is an important proxy measure in dementia care as the person with the cognitive impairment tends to overestimate function (Karagiozis et al., 1998; Kiyak, et al., 1994) …

A Novel Psychotropic Risk Assessment To Enhance Medical Management Of Patients With Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Nancy C. Trego May 2014

A Novel Psychotropic Risk Assessment To Enhance Medical Management Of Patients With Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Nancy C. Trego

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

There is growing evidence and concern documenting the risks of antipsychotic use, and psychotropic medication burden in general, for older adults with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Yet nearly 25 percent of all long term care residents take antipsychotics for behavioral disturbances associated with dementia as “off-label” use, despite their modest efficacy and FDA black box warnings (CMS, 2013). Expert consensus calls for non-pharmacological strategies as the first line treatment, yet some patients with BPSD may require a combination of non-pharmacological interventions and pharmacological treatments for symptom reduction (AGS, 2011). The relief of debilitating symptoms aims to improve …

Primary Care At Home: Nurse Practitioners' Perceptions And Practices, Tonya Bragg-Underwood May 2014

Primary Care At Home: Nurse Practitioners' Perceptions And Practices, Tonya Bragg-Underwood

Doctor of Nursing Practice Technical Reports

Background: Primary care at home is not a new idea, but rather a reinvention of an old and almost forgotten practice. Today, only 1% of primary care visits are provided in a home setting; despite the increasing aging homebound population in the United States. Current primary care at home research relates improved patient outcomes with primary care at home visits. Primary care at home is reemerging in the United States, but currently is not generating many positive reviews. There is a gap in the current primary care at home literature regarding nurse practitioner home visit practices and perceptions. Methods: A …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Effects of Flight Behavior on Physiology and Senescence May Be Profound in Insects Because of the Extremely High Metabolic Costs of Flight. Flight Capacity in Insects Decreases with Age; in Contrast, Limiting Flight Behavior Extends Lifespan and Slows the Age-Related Loss of Antioxidant Capacity and Accumulation of Oxidative Damage in Flight Muscles. in This Study, We Tested the Effects of Age and Lifetime Flight Behavior on Flight Capacity by Measuring Wingbeat Frequency, the Ability to Fly in a Hypo-Dense Gas Mixture, and Metabolic Rate in Drosophila Melanogaster. Specifically, 5-Day-Old Adult Flies Were Separated into Three Life-Long Treatments: (1) Those …

Schrödinger And Nietzsche And Life: Eternal Recurrence And The Conscious Now, Babette Babich May 2014

Schrödinger And Nietzsche And Life: Eternal Recurrence And The Conscious Now, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

The phenomenological question of consciousness usually associated with Husserl (although there are echoes of this in Augustine as in Marcus Aurelius, Kant and Schopenhauer), is the consciousness of the now, the present moment. I explore this consciousness for Erwin Schrödinger, which for him included reference to the Upaniṣads together with Nietzsche’s central teaching or “thinking” of the eternal recurrence of the same.

Results And Lessons Learned From A Nurse Practitioner-Guided Dementia Care Intervention For Primary Care Patients And Their Family Caregivers, Richard H. Fortinsky, Colleen Delaney, Ofer Harel, Karen Pasquale, Elena Schjavland, John Lynch, Alison Kleppinger, Suzanne Crumb May 2014

Results And Lessons Learned From A Nurse Practitioner-Guided Dementia Care Intervention For Primary Care Patients And Their Family Caregivers, Richard H. Fortinsky, Colleen Delaney, Ofer Harel, Karen Pasquale, Elena Schjavland, John Lynch, Alison Kleppinger, Suzanne Crumb

Articles - Patient Care

Older adults with dementia care needs often visit primary care physicians (PCPs), but PCP dementia care limitations are widely documented. This study tested the value of employing a nurse practitioner (NP) with geropsychiatric expertise to augment PCP care for newly and recently diagnosed patients and family caregivers. Twenty-one dyads received the NP intervention; 10 dyads were controls. Outcomes included patient neuropsychiatric symptom and quality of life changes, and caregiver depression, burden, and self-efficacy changes. Intervention acceptability by patients, caregivers, and PCPs was determined. No outcome differences were found; however, the NP intervention was deemed highly satisfactory by all stakeholders. Patients …

Biology, Culture, And The Origins Of Pet-Keeping, Harold Herzog May 2014

Biology, Culture, And The Origins Of Pet-Keeping, Harold Herzog

Human-Companion Animal Relationships Collection

Attachments between non-human animals of different species are surprisingly common in situations involving human agency (e.g., homes, zoos, and wildlife parks). However, cross-species animal friendships analogous to pet-keeping by humans are at least rare and possibly non-existent in nature. Why has pet-keeping evolved only in Homo sapiens? I review theories that explain pet-keeping either as an adaptation or an evolutionary by-product. I suggest that these explanations cannot account for the wide variation in the distribution and forms of pet-keeping across human societies and over historical time. Using fluctuations in the popularity of dog breeds in the United States, I show …

Staff Perceptions Of Work-Environment Factors Affecting Morale In Southeastern Registrar's Offices, Rheanna Plemons May 2014

Staff Perceptions Of Work-Environment Factors Affecting Morale In Southeastern Registrar's Offices, Rheanna Plemons

Dissertations

Studies on morale are prevalent in industry, healthcare, and public educational systems. However, morale studies are limited within higher education and focusing on the support staff at universities. This qualitative study used focus groups to identify themes among support staff in selected Registrar’s Offices in the Southeastern region of the United States. Institutions were chosen based on comparable enrollments and similar organizational structure. The researcher asked participants to discuss their perceptions on current morale levels in the office and how different work responsibilities affect morale. In addition, participants were asked to discuss motivators used by leaders and whether those motivators …

Preventing Falls With Vitamin D, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd, Thomas Schlierf, Matthew Wingate May 2014

Preventing Falls With Vitamin D, Franklin D. Shuler Md, Phd, Thomas Schlierf, Matthew Wingate

Orthopaedics

Falls are the number one cause for injury-related morbidity and mortality in West Virginia’s seniors. Multiple independent variables contribute to the risk of a fall: previous falls, alterations in balance and vision, impairments in gait and strength, and medications most highly correlate with the risk for a fall. Vitamin D supplementation is emerging as an easy, safe and well-tolerated fall reduction/prevention strategy due to the beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system with improvements in strength, function and navigational abilities. From meta-analysis data, maximal fall reduction benefit in seniors is achieved when correcting vitamin D deficiency and when using adjunctive calcium …

The Relationship Between Muscular Power And Functional Fitness Among Older Adults, Corinne A. Parkins May 2014

The Relationship Between Muscular Power And Functional Fitness Among Older Adults, Corinne A. Parkins

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of the study was to determine whether functional fitness is a good predictor of average and peak muscular power among adults over the age of 65. The 30-second chair stand and 8-foot-up-and-go test were used to define functional fitness and were administered to 57 older adults. Muscular power output was measured using the Tendo Weightlifting Analyzer during 5 chair stands. Relative average and peak power were used in the analyses. An independent t-test was run on all variables to distinguish differences between men and women, and multiple regression analyses were performed to detect the relationship between the two …

Visual Analysis And Design Proposal For The Bridges Organization Day Facility In Rockledge, Florida, Lesa N. Lorusso

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The population by age of the client and staff at the Bridges Facility in Rockledge, Florida represent a microcosm of the population of Brevard County, Florida. The shared history of two non-profit organizations that began in in Brevard County, FL in the mid twentieth century is remarkable. NASA began in 1958, and the Bridges organization began in 1956. The historically significant American community of Brevard County, FL now faces the challenges of a new focus without the NASA space shuttle program and accommodating an increasingly aging population, while the similarly aged Bridges organization faces similar organizational and population challenges as …

Mitoneet: Reduction In Insulin Resistance Through Ameliorated Oxidative Stress?, Nicolas A. Ferry May 2014

Mitoneet: Reduction In Insulin Resistance Through Ameliorated Oxidative Stress?, Nicolas A. Ferry

Undergraduate Honors Theses

MitoNEET is a mitochondrial iron-sulfur protein with poorly-understood functions. Proposed functions of mitoNEET include regulating of oxidative capacity, reactive oxygen homeostasis, and other possible roles. Investigating the interactions of mitoNEET with other proteins might help identify functional roles of this protein. MitoNEET was discovered in 2004 to identify physiological targets of pioglitazone hydrochloride, a drug that is commonly used to treat type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a metabolic disease and, although the exact pathology is complex, the role of the mitochondrion in cellular energy production and glucose oxidation indicates that this organelle has a role in type-2 diabetes. Because of …

The Impact Of Body Image On Women In Later Life: Effects On Quality Of Life And Body Perception, Rachel L. Avants May 2014

The Impact Of Body Image On Women In Later Life: Effects On Quality Of Life And Body Perception, Rachel L. Avants

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Physical, mental, and emotional changes can occur throughout the aging process, making it important to treat different age groups as separate populations when researching body image. Yet, very few instruments have been validated for middle-aged and older adults. An online survey was used to perform a validation of the Body Image Quality of Life Inventory (BIQLI) and examine demographic relationships, with a sample of 947 women, ages 40-79, from across the United States. A principal component analysis (PCA) and convergent validity supported the use of the BIQLI for women ages 40 to 79. A one-factor model was validated for comparing …

Participation In Recreation And Leisure Activities In Long-Term Care Facilities And Health Related Quality Of Life, James Michael Duncan May 2014

Participation In Recreation And Leisure Activities In Long-Term Care Facilities And Health Related Quality Of Life, James Michael Duncan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper was to examine predicted variations in Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among individuals over the age of 65 residing in Long Term Care (LTC) facilities. Variables related to self-care, depression, gender, social support, and leisure activities were examined. Univariate analysis was conducted from data collected from 110 LTC residents from 15 assisted living facilities (ALF) and nursing homes (NH) throughout Arkansas and a standard multiple regression was employed. Linear combinations of independent variables were significantly correlated to variations of HRQoL. More specifically, higher ratings in depression were positively correlated to lower ratings of HRQoL. …
